Dirties in East Hertfordshire

Booked a table for 5 at half 7 on Friday night. Got there and the restaurant was closed. Had to then wander round Hertford trying to find another restaurant that wasn't fully booked and was taking walk-ins. Had no contact info as their website is under construction, and the opening hours on Google are wrong. Not sure if restaurant has closed down or has been taken over, but probably shouldn't be taking bookings through OpenTable if you aren't open.

I love this place. Great food, especially the Burritos and shredded pork tostadas, nice beer, good staff, great feel to the place. Recommend it highly

Went with friends last week on a Friday night, food was great and stayed for the event after. Food was great, served with a smile, all had a wicked night! Will be back very soon :)

This place looked really good online, but when we tasted the food, it tasted out of date, old and artificial. It had a weird smell. Then when I went past the kitchen I saw that the Nachos I had about 20mins earlier were boxed in a plastic box that you would normally put household items in stuffed in the corner. Unsanitary, not fresh and just a complete dive. They were stale. Food overpriced for what it is, probably due to the area. Definitely lives up to the name. No bins in the bathroom.Also, some of the staff are rude, there was only one girl who was really nice and was surprised she could work with such people. Never again!!!!

Great Mexican restaurant in Hertford, quite a small, which is nice but can mean it can be busy. This is by far the best Mexican restaurant in the local area much better than 'the Mexican'

Waited over an hour for our food only for it arrive cold. Burrito was not at all what it should have been, basically plain rice with some lettuce and cold steak. Complained to the chefs who couldn't have cared less. Such a shame as the waitress was lovely as were the drinks. Would not recommend.

Booked for 7:30 arrived at 7:25 seated straight away but nobody came to take our drinks or anything for 20 mins. Whilst sitting there waiting I saw and heard the waitress apologise to 3 tables for either food that could not be honoured (broken machinery) or for food that had arrived at tables cold. Tables are so close together it’s like your eating with people you don’t know. In fact It was the lady sitting next to me who told me the food had been really bad so after waiting I took this as as sign to get out and spend my money in another restaurant. Shame as it was my birthday and we would have spent well so that’s money that went to another restaurant and not Dirties. Also just to add the music was so loud you can’t hear or have a nice conversation. It’s a place to eat Mexican not a club it really was strange atmosphere and I would not ever want to go back even in a quieter time.

If you need a night out involving letting your hair down, dancing to some tunes , munching on burritos AND embracing the cocktails. This is the place. As soon as I walked into Dirties I got taken back to a holiday I had many moons ago. The venue has a real friendly and holiday esq vibe to it. Loved it. Hope who was our host (I think Manager too) was fabulous. You could tell she enjoyed her job because her customer service was friendly & warm. It’s always lovely to see staff in hospitality enjoying their work because I appreciate how hard it can be. Hope I “hope” this review makes you like your job more and we will see you soon. Nice food all round, just the pork tacos isn’t right, missing something. The service is a bit too inexperienced and lack the basics like remembering cutlery or glasses or side plates. If we were fussy about service we would be put off. There are also too many tables and you pretty much share a table but it’s hard to change that when it’s so small inside and they need to serve as many people as possible. Overall I’m not sure we’d come back as a couple but would as a group of friends.

The blaring music was too much and the food was mediocre. However the worst thing was half way through our meal, with no warning, we had bouncers around us stacking up all the tables and chairs to make room for the bar area. We had tables flying over our heads with not a single acknowledgement from them. We were eventually left as a singular table in the middle of an empty space trying to eat our food. We felt rushed and pushed to hurry our dinner and leave. A very awkward and uncomfortable situation. They should not take bookings for food at 8:30 if you are going to turn the place into night club at 9?! Will not be going back here again….

visited on a Saturday Afternoon with a group of seven for Bottomless Bruch! food tasted good, and most importantly, staff were really attentive with glass refills! Unfortunately they didn’t include cocktails in their deal, but for the price, we got a good amount of Prosecco so certainly would do it again!

I have been to quite a few Mexican restaurants and have also been to Mexico and was so disappointed with the food at Dirties. The nachos were just a pile of cold tortilla chips with a tiny bit of guac, sour cream and American squirty cheese!! Where’s the hot melted cheese, fresh coriander, corn, salsa and jalapeños?? Some of us got the burritos for our main and were equally disappointed. They were extremely bland with no spice at all - as expected if you use plain white rice in a Mexican dish. We didn’t order any cocktails as we saw them being made using pre mixed cocktails. They also started blaring house music at 8pm - very Mexican. Our bill came to over £110 (one starter, four mains and eight drinks) with the service charge automatically added - another pet hate. Safe to say we won’t be returning.

The quesadillas we had were lovely and one of the best we had eaten. Let down by the drinks , went there for lunch and only wanted a soft drink £4.50 for a 330ml tin of sprite !

We have been to Dirties numerous times in the past and always had a good time. However this time we were all very disappointed. We went for a bottomless brunch, so a big group. This time, our session was 30 mins shorter, we had to stick with the same drink. Wasn't allowed to have a beer then a wine, starters had shrunk in size and this time no desert. Our waitress was pleasant but the overall management sullen and rude. Was overpriced and not a great atmosphere like it used to be! They even tried to put a 12.5% service charge on! Which we refused to pay. Can only think there's new management. We all agreed we wouldn't be returning!

Lovely food but let down by very poor service and a awful restaurant setup that just doesn't seem to have been thought through. The staf didn't seem to be well organised or care much for customers comfort which was disappointing to see. As a top - Make sure you are seated upstairs as it can affect your night if you are stuck in the basement as we sady were. Staff didn't seem adequately trained in how to use heating or cared to make sure their guests are comfortable. Initially we were seated in the " cold dark basement seating are " which was an abhorrent experience. It was freezing and dark with little atmosphere in contrast to the warm cosy upstairs. Surprisingly we had to ask the staff multiple times to turn on the heating. They turned on the air con fan instead which made it even colder. After speaking to two separate members of staff about it - they finally fixed it but it still didn't get much warmer. We had been planning to get loads of drinks but because it was so cold - I asked for a coffee which they didn't serve. We asked to move again upstairs which the staff finally relented and we were able to finally have a decent meal. Food was ok-ish but the rest of the meal had been ruined by the bad table and poor service. As a bonus they also didn't have the sides we wanted. I don't think the staff realised how bad the experience is as they even asked at the end why we hadnt ordered more drinks. Hopefully what we experienced was just a blip. This place could be really great if they can work on their service and ideally making sure customers are warm and comfortable as a starting point. If you do come along - the tacos are definitely the better choice over the burritos and the quesadillas are a definite good option to go for.

Realy enjoyed the food and cocktail.wine was good.not massive portions but loads of taste.we had thicken thighs on tacos .and burrito we had steak in side lovely and a side of potatos boyfriend loved these.

Decided to give the restaurant a second chance after terrible service back in November. Unfortunately service hasn’t improved, foods gone downhill and the cocktails we received were not correct. After asking if we had the right cocktails and informed yes they obviously don’t know how to make mojitos. No sugar, mint, crashed ice and since when is bitter lemon in one. Music turned off at nine and cleaning around us! Then we had a £10 service charge added to our bill for the pleasure.

I’m sad to say dirties has changed. We’ve been coming here for years and it’s just not what it used to be. Even with the food being great as always, it’s hard to enjoy it with loud house music going when the restaurant is basically empty & we are one of two tables eating. Just awkward. It’s becoming more of a bar I guess & at age 28 we felt too old for it

What a lovely surprise. This is the first time we have been here and I must say how impressed we were. The service was friendly and our food came out so quick! The food was soo good, the taste was impeccable. Their cocktails so so good. Looks like we found our new favourite restaurant.

Great little find. Good food, can get very busy so book! A great selection of Mexican food. Lovely nacos, but if you don't like liquid cheese (if that's what it is called) ask them to take it off. Definitely go again

I’d heard mixed reviews before we visited recently and unfortunately I wasn’t impressed. The welcome was a little sullen and cocktails weren’t great (too sweet/sugary/cheap tasting). The starter of nachos and dips was ok but the ‘bad boy burrito’ was not good at all - very bland and watery. The toilets seemed a bit unhygienic and downstairs smelt of stale alcohol. Unfortunately will not be returning.

This was our first time visiting this little gem. The atmosphere was buzzing the decor was striking and the staff were fantastic. As for the food......omg it was absolutely amazing. We will definitely be back for more. Thank you for a lovely meal. The staff are a credit to your establishment.

Dirties is cosy and has lots character. The staff were welcoming and attentive. The food was delicious and we enjoyed the traditional Mexican soda's. The wait for our lunch was short. Location is great. There was a service charge, however, well earnt and we were happy to support a local business. Our only suggestion would be adapting the stalls as they weren't very comfy.

I had my hen party in the basement bar at Dirties on Friday night and can't recommend them highly enough! Helen and her staff were amazing from start to finish and coped brilliantly with 30 hens! The bottomless prosecco flowed freely and the food was delicious. We all had the best time ever. If you are looking for a small party venue give Helen a call, she is a star!

We had the pork tostadas (photo) - very generous portion good flavour, deep fried chillies were excellent. Buttermilk chicken wings not too spicy, fine but not amazing. Chicken burrito was a good size, well made. Cocktails were strong and good variety. Staff were friendly and attentive, nice atmosphere, would recommend

Im so happy to see this little gem has survived after the difficulties of lockdown and its now mine and my boyfriends favourite place to go. This is a lovely little place! Amazing food, atmosphere and very reasonable on price. I tried the quesadilla, buttermilk chicken soft tacos, pulled pork tostadas, chicken wings, and deep fried chilli peppers, and a bad boy burrito! They were all great! Highly recommend this place, and thank you to the staff. I'll certainly be returning here!

Ordered for pick up, had to wait a little longer when I arrived but it's Friday so no worries. However, portions are small for the price and the tacos were literally just a piece of meat and a dollop of sauces in each. I expected some lettuce or cheese maybe. Tasted okay but nothing special when you consider the price. Probably won't be back.

The food was ok but the place is really cramped. You can’t move your hands freely to eat your food plus they add a service charge on to the bill. Not a place I would visit again.

Relaxed environment and food was okay. Felt a bit cramp in terms of space( tables and chairs). Also the waitress at the end had a really bad attitude when we asked her to remove the “optional” service charge.

Okay its a trendy type of Mexican and tries too hard. Prices are steep cocktails are £10 and not great. Everything is covered in chilli so if you are like me and enjoy tasting your food I wouldn't bother coming as even the 1 chilli items blew our mouths off. When we questioned one dish we were told it was a mistake on the menu and should have been 2 chillies. Menu is on back of placemat in case like us you are waiting for the serving staff to give you them after you order your drinks. 3 people £80 with automatic service charge 4 dishes 2 cocktails and soft drink. Was really looking forward to trying as has good reviews but not one I will be coming back to in a hurry.

This is one of my favorite Mexicans nearby. I would recommend the burritos and quesadillas. Some of the other dishes are slightly smaller, so I'd recommend going for a burrito with a side or some quesadillas on the side to share. The burritos for me aren't saucy enough (personal preference - not a negative), so if you are like me I'd suggest asking for extra salsa in the burritos and then they are delicious 😍 The chicken burrito and the sweet potato burrito are excellent. Cocktails are tasty, I'd recommend the passion fruit mojito.

Food was really tasty and flavoursome. The cocktails were also divine, especially the coconut Margarita. The waitress was also really friendly and nice. We can’t wait go back already 😊

Service was awesome and staff are very friendly. We had the bad boy burrito and the nachos. Very reasonable price for the quality and freshness of the food. They took us to are table and explained the menu and recommend some things to us making us feel at home and made us feel comfortable.

Very expensive for what you get ! Portions sizes so small for what you pay then they have the cheek to wack a hefty service charge on top ! Wouldn’t mind if the prices and portions where ok ! Wouldn’t return lots more better value restaurants in the area !

This spot is my preferred one. I eat in plenty of restaurants but to this restaurant I keep coming back again and again. The stuff is very attentive and the cuisine they cook is so fresh and tasty. I never miss an opportunity to have a decent dinner in this place. I recommend this place with pleasure.

Reasonable price, food wasnt too bad but if your used to having a lunch time burrito from Daddy Donkey or Chipotle it doesnt really come close.

I loved the vibe! The service was great. The kitchen is a piece of art in itself. Has a great selection of drinks and good food. The spicy marinated steak soft tacos were beautifully done and I'd suggest you believe the level of spice shown on the menu. It's nothing to play with. My server and I had a little laugh over me sweating over 3 spicy soft tacos. If you love spicy food, you'll love this!

Why are the best tunes in Hertford at a Mexican restaurant? One of life’s great mysteries

I love Dirties. Great atmosphere and staff are brilliant. The menu is very good, but having moved to a plant-based diet in the past year I was a little disappointed at how the menu can be adapted. Two outright vegan items on the menu, but when I asked if the cheese and sour cream in my burrito could be substituted I was told no. Subsequently my burrito was very bland. Perhaps extra beans, a tomato salsa or guacamole would have made it tastier, or perhaps some chipotle sauce. I wasn't expecting plant-based cheese or sour cream alternative, but they should consider it at some point. I may not return unless they do. If you're not plant-based then it's brilliant, if a little expensive for what you get. £8 for a small nacho starter is a lot.
