We thought we would try here for lunch for a change from dining in Edinburgh. Having only been here for coffee and drinks in the past we didn’t know what to expect. What a find!! From the fabulous North Berwick and Damson gin martinis to start with it only got better and better. Beautifully set table with fresh bread and an iced jug of water waiting on our arrival. Slow roasted borders lamb with mash, buttered leeks and red wine jus was to die for. In fact my partner went as far as to say it was the finest plate of food he had eaten in a long while. Cranachan cheesecake was simply melt in the mouth and the 3 cheese selection was superb, beautifully ripe and at perfect room temperature, served with delicious homemade oatcakes. Coupled with a fruity bottle of Malbec and coffee and mints to follow, I could not fault it. The service was exemplary. Lovely knowledgeable waitress and all the staff so friendly and helpful. Finished our wine and coffee in front of a roaring log fire. I cannot recommend this highly enough. If you want the best Sunday lunch please visit the Direlton Arms - I can assure you won’t be disappointed.

We have visited this place quite a few times but not since the pandemic.Dirleton is a picturesque village worth a visit for its castle, village green and walks. The restaurant is part of the Open Arms Hotel and always serves unpretentious well cooked food made from local identifiable sources That hasn’t changed but in addition the hotel has adapted to the current health crisis to provide a secure safe environment .that sounds very cold but service has always been warm and friendly and that hasn’t changed

We eat out a lot when we stay in North Berwick. My cousin especially wanted to try the Open Arms and we were not disappointed. All three of us had different dishes and all were excellent. Beautifully presented, generous portions. My chicken with haggis on sweet potato mash was possibly the tastiest thing I have ever eaten, and my cousin said the same of his sea bream with samphire. Good reports on the steak pie with black pudding too. We all had the same dessert which was rhubarb and apple pie with ginger Ice cream. Coffee and mints rounded it off, Service was prompt and friendly, can’t wait till our next visit to East Lothian now!

We hadn't been to the Open Arms for several years, but on a lovely sunny day, there are few better spots in Scotland. A very decent lunch menu offers an excellent choice of superbly prepared food along with an interesting wine list. Friendly and knowledgeable service and a lovely decor add to the dining experience. We always visit Deveau’s whenever we stay in North Berwick. It’s about a 5 minute drive away and well worth a trip, particularly for a cheap n cheerful early bird supper. Food quality is excellent- there are plenty of choices to suit every preference, and usually Scottish specialities are represented in the menu. Dress code is smart casual in this elegant country house hotel. No loud music, the atmosphere is refined and family oriented. Try it!

We popped in for lunch today. Were offered bread but no butter. Great start. The table next to us had finished their lunch when they were offered the tartare sauce. Inspite of making eye contact with the serving staff they were too busy gossip to take order. Service/food glacial. When it finallly arrived, the pasta dish was tasteless and some of the chips were cold in the middle, although they looked well cooked (reheated?). On top of this, we were overcharged. The serving staff said could not see the problem. When I explained there were only two of us and not three the penny dropped. Bill was rectified. It would seem as though staff were not trained properly. Will not return.

Our first visit. Popped in for a late lunch and were given a warm welcome. A good menu made better by a version with clarifications on what is and isn't suitable for those requiring gluten and/or dairy free. Friendly and prompt service, comfortable chairs and surroundings, a lovely view, and the lunch itself was excellent both in terms of quality and value for money. The Open Arms is a no-nonsene, good-food sort of place with friendly staff, responsive service, gracious surrounds and a lovely view across a small green to the castle. It is particularly nice to sit in the comfortable lounge debating one's menu choices whilst savouring a gin and tonic. My only disappointment on this visit was a lack of cask conditioned beer. Perhaps it's a cellar restriction... With this small omission rectified I would have been very happy indeed!

Our party arrived at Deveau's Brasserie for dinner at 8pm. The welcome was not particularly friendly. The surroundings are very nice and a lovely lounge to adjourn to for coffee. I opted for the battered haddock and chips - this was ok. Others in the group had the blade of beef and the lamb. The cheese selection was very good with a nice Dunsyre blue and local smoked cheese. As a group we found the staff quite forgetful with drinks forgotten and also coffee. Overall a lovely setting but staff need more training in hospitality. Sunday lunch. No welcome, just a gruff. "Have you booked?"We had. Menus and water banged down, spilling on table, it felt as if we were a unwelcome inconvenience. Food was bland, and both sea bream dish with overcooked pasta at base and unset vanilla creme brûlée, which are admittedly subtle, had no flavour at all.I decided not to complain at the time, as my elderly mother was enjoying her roast lamb dish and this was supposed to be a treat for her. The staff were busy and rather austere, certainly not deriving nor instilling any pleasure, it all seemed so functional and rather joyless.

My husband and I were treated to this by a friend - we had previously eaten in the Library which was wonderful but we received the same level of service in the Bistro. The menu gave a reasonably good choice. However I was violently ill later that evening as my main course included a cheese made from sheep's milk. Although the menu named the Italian cheese it did not mention it was the variety made from sheep's milk as there are different milk's used for this cheese! Yet the cheese board gave quite a good description of the cheeses thereon. I enjoyed my meal at the time but my allergic reaction spoiled the whole experience when a bit more information could have avoided this!

Deveau's is a the restaurant for the Open Arms in Dirleton, a very tradtional-looking Scottish hotel across the village green from the castle. It is in a part of the country we very much enjoy, and we turned up for a post-Christmas Sunday lunch without booking. The lady on reception said they were very busy, with a 50-seat function in another part of the hotel as well as a full restaurant, but after checking with the Owner she found us a table. We were fortunate - during our lunch we noticed quite a few people were turned away. Our order was taken and after starters of smoked salmon, and a medley of prawns and melon, we enjoyed the blade of beef and, unusually, a chestnut and cranberry Wellington. The food was delicious and attractively presented, and although the kitchen was clearly very busy, there were no great delays. Sadly we were too full to tackle the impressive dessert menu, but instead took a very relaxed coffee in the hotel lounge, all leather sofas and open fires - could have stayed all afternoon! It was clear that a lot of our fellow diners were locals and regulars, always a good sign for a restaurant. From the outside the hotel looks as though it might be a bit formal and stuffy. It is not. As far as the restaurant goes, it is thoroughly enjoyable quality experience.

Food was Ok and we had a pleasant time but on balance i think that we prefer the library to the bistro.the staff were friendly and we had the opportunity to speak with the owner who is very hand on, which shows, as the service was excellent.

The restaurant is very nice and clean with pretty seat covers. The service was friendly and there were no incidents. Two people in our group had starters and they both looked tasty and interesting. My main course was penne pasta in a spinach, tomato and cream sauce and ,although it was good, it was far too filling. All the other main courses were praised at my table. You get complimentary bread before you meal. You are invited to have coffee in the lounge after your meal. The toilets were plush and carpeted and there is also an intimate evening restaurant.

Deveau's Brasserie at the Open Arms Hotel is a must when visiting the area. Good food everytime. Liam and his staff just know how to make your night enjoyable. Relaxing pre dinner drinks in the lounge and return there afterwards for coffee.

This place is odd. Very odd. One of the waiters was wearing a scruffy zipped cardigan and trousers that were absolutely filthy around the pockets. His clothes were so totally out of place that it was hard to concentrate on the food.Main courses were disappointing - overcooked and a bit mean. And the portion of vegetables was positively stingy.Desserts were hit and miss. The service wasn't too bad. Efficient but lacking any real warmth. Were they glad to see us? Hard to tell. But probably not. Did they wish us good night? Not exactly. Actually not at all. Would I go there again? No.And as for that waiter's clothes. It was so bizarre it was funny.

The worst dining experience for a long time. 3 waiters dressed in black. Not one asked if we were enjoying our meal. No one at hotel reception at start or finish. Truly forgettable; such a disappointment .

Good value 2 course lunch at £15, friendly welcoming service and they were also baby friendly although a changing table in the toilets would be helpful. I recommenf the raspberry and honeycomb sundae for dessert.

The area around North Berwick and Dunbar offer numerous castles and connected parks. Some are just ruins such as Dirleton Castle others are still inhabited offering limited visitation such as Haddington's Lennoxlove. The Open Arms Hotel is right in front of Dirleton Castle. Besides offering a highly praised hotel (which we did not stay at) the hotel also offers a Deveau's Brasserie which was a truly pleasant surprise.Everything at Devaeau's was outstanding. Courteous and competent staff, well thought furnishing (the tables are wide allowing you to place a camera on it while dining. There is a wardrobe so your coats and other things will be looked after for you. I tend not to let my camera out of my sight not due to lack of trust as much as you never know when a photographic opportunity may present itself.Beer and ale once again to drink. Fish is first rate clearly caught that same day. A chowder like soup which in itself was a small meal. Great meat. If the hotel is as good as the restaurant it is definitely worth a stay. The bill was reasonable for what we had. Most certainly a place to return to. Well done.

Ive had lunch here twice in the last 2 months. On both occasions the food has been delicious and the service excellent. Yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed the smoked pheasant and sundried tomatoes starter from the specials menu, mustard crusted lamb with potato dauphinois, spring green and side vegetables and plumb crumble with clotted cream icecream. Special mention to the vegetables, something which can often let a meal down. Not here. The green beans, cauliflower and clapshot were delicious.

We went for the early bird dinner which offered 2 or 3 courses @ special rates. The food & service was excellent & we had no issues at all.We requested a table by the window & were given a nice table, however I noticed that some of the tables for 2 were very small, so if you book put a request in for the larger table size.

Have dined here quite often over the years. The food is always good, as is the choice on the menu. The staff are attentive and helpful.

Odd little eatery in a beautiful village. Staff seemed bored and disinterested. Main courses were ok but reminiscent of that supper you cooked for yourself last Tuesday. Puddings unexpectedly delicious. I won't be hurrying back to this dour little establishment but if you do decide to give it a try, keep your expectations low and you may just be pleasantly surprised.

after receiving a recommendation from a friend, we booked a table in the Brasserie. On arrival we were made to feel like the staff wanted to go home and couldn't wait for us to leave despite them agreeing that 2pm wasn't too late for lunch. After further hostilities, we paid for our drinks and left without ordering. We will not be returning.
