I have been visiting here a lot more frequently over the last few months. It has to be said it's vastly improved on recent years. The staff are very welcoming and accommodating, the selection of ales they now have on is much better and varied than in the past. The food is great and well priced and it's a lovely friendly atmosphere. It's a very large pub, with a nice function room. The interior needs a little TLC but that's no detriment to the staff or the food.Great local pub.

Popped in for a "light bite" lunch - the food was great value, perfectly prepared and very enjoyable. Served by friendly, helpful staff - couldn't ask for more for a lunchtime visit.

To think until recently this Public house was set to be replaced by another care home, sacrilege ...... It's true that it needs money spent on it as it's well overdue a revamp but that in no way effects the good value food on offer from warm friendly landlord and staff at present. I recommend you give it a try..... Come on Marstons get the wallet out !!!

Can't believe some of these reviews are the same place I go to 5 times a week. Food is always good and any problems are dealt with swiftly by polite, apologetic staff. Many nights there are staff members having a drink after work but I have never heard any foul language nor rudeness in any form. All staff from the manager down are friendly and polite and make me and my family feel very welcome.

Food is 50/50 depending on the chef.Takes ages to get served for beverages, the beer is very poor for the price you pay.Staff look miserable like deathrow is near upon them.A female staff member drinking cider after her shift with a foul mouth. My children have more manners and my dogs have more class.Place is a dive.Never going back!

Came here with my girlfriend for a quick bite to eat and drink. Service was quick but we ordered a platter and the chicken wings were very over cooked and dry. Wedges were nice though.

During a recent visit to Wolverhampton I stumbled across this place. It looked lovely from the outside so thought I'd give it a try. The decor could do with a refresh and the carpet has definitely seen better days but the place was warm and welcoming and staff were great. I was on my own so got chatting a little to one of them. The service at the bar was quick and friendly. I would definitely go back should I be that way again. I didn't sample the food as it was short stop off but it looked and smelled great and there was a good range on the menu.

As this is a local pub, I've eaten here several times, in the hope that my previous experiences were one offs.On every occassion, the food has been terrible and the service hasnt been great. On a couple of occassion the food was burnt (I hadnt ordered a bbq meal). Staff were shockingly unappologetic and dismissive. Not impressed at all which is a shame because the pub itself is a nice building and being so local I'd love to go there more often but now always travel further afield for a decent meal and service. Even for a quick drink, this place has dropped in my estimation and I wouldn't bother.

Waited 7 minutes to be served. When I was eventually approached I got grunted at. Good selection of cask ales and my pint of marstons was perfect. Clientele pretty much the same as always and the place is buzzing. Could benefit from a makeover. Toilets were ok apart from tissue on the floor. Would go again but such shame the staff are bad

I visited this public house recently with my family for some meals. Its not the first time we have visited this location as it is local and in easy walking distants. Over the last few years the management seems to have changed hands more times than I care to remember, and along with it the quality of the food served has deteriorated. A few years ago now, when it was first mentioned that a Tesco was going to be built on the site, I was told that the Claregate would receive an overdue, refubishment, however according to the staff this is now not going to happen. The Claregate used to be a great place to visit and has tried to move along with the times, once having a kids area, when catering for the family was once all the rage. Myself and one other had the Sunday dinner, of beef with a selection of vegetables, which was just awful. The Beef was tough, carrots were soggy, brocolli looked if it had seen better days, roast potatoes over done, and it was barely warm. The other participates had scampi, again over cooked, and pizza pie again over cooked, probaly microwaved. Both came with chips, which looked as though they had been reheated. We left without complaining, as we didn't want to make a scene as we had our very young granddaughter with us. The brightest part of our visit was the staff, which are very friendly. The lager was also very nice. Considering the Claregate is being run by the same brewery (Marston's)as The Bell at Tong, Shifnal, which is only a few miles away. The difference in food quality and presentation, are miles apart.

I'm not quite sure what happened on the nights some of the previous reviews this year went in, but I can say that my family have been coming to the Claregate on a weekly basis for over a year now. There are other pubs, a few closer, we could go to (and have tried) but the level of service at the Claregate is exceptional. We have never had a single bad meal, the very few times a mistake has been made it has been sorted out quickly, and the staff are amongst the most friendly and welcoming I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I've worked in customer service for a large part of my working life and I have no complaints about the abilities of any staff here. There's a reason we come back every week, in fact we've eaten there three times this week already. We're not local (20 minute drive) but have never had an issue with feeling uncomfortable or unwelcome.

What on earth happened to the pub we used to frequent once a week for Hotdog Thursday...? Last nights debacle consisted of...* Vegetarian meal arriving with a slice of ham across it* Steak and Field mushroom salad had no field mushroom just a handful of cremated button mushrooms and no explanation...!* A half hour wait for the desserts to arrive after questioning 'bar staff' * the aforementioned bar staff had no idea how to make a liqueur coffee between them but were experts on deciding which music they wanted to listen to in the pub and how often they could A) Frequent the smoking shelter and B) Get to the rear of the pub where their friends had gathered outside!Sadly after 18 months we will be voting with our feet, having gone there for our last time we would have complained to a manager had we had any idea who could possibly have been in charge!Unfortunately I have to leave one star to submit this review but I really wouldn't otherwise...!

Absolutely awful, Do not waste your time or money visiting this place. The meals where of a very very poor quality, tuna melt was tuna mayo with a dollop of cheese in the middle served cold - not what a tuna melt should be!, fish finger sandwich was a piece of battered fish cut into pieces but inedible as it was all batter, surf and turf was over cooked and had obviously been standing while other meals were prepared as it came out cold. When we complained the attitude and response from the staff was very bad. Staff are obviously used to customers complaining and did not seem concerned by it.The only good thing about the claregate is a new tesco next door to the pub from where we purchased desserts.

Visited the pub to watch an England game.I have been to this pub for over 25 years and sadly every year is declining. The drinks are fairly priced but the service is average at best.We ordered good and the staff member got the order wrong albeit we got it corrected. The food portions were small and plain and all of our party thought the same.It is a terrible shame that this iconic pub is not closed down with the brewery spending a decent amount and get to the standard it was some years ago. The car park has been partially sold off for a Tesco express and if they don't get things moving I can for see this pub eventually being sold off for housing.

Visited this pub following a recommendation from a friend on Saturday, 11 January 2014, and had a fantastic evening. We enjoyed a fantastic meal, enhanced by the busy, friendly atmosphere and the very attentive staff. The meal was also excellent value for money.Just to confirm how much we enjoyed our first visit to the Claregate, we went there again on Friday 24 January 2014. Once again, there was an excellent atmosphere and all the staff were extremely attentive, courteous and professional. Our meal was thoroughly enjoyable and excellent value for money. Will definitely go there again even though we are from the Dudley area.

Worst pub in Wolverhampton, visited on our way back from somewhere else and the car park looked empty so we thought it meant quick service. NO its because people walk from local areas to here and stare at people buying food on the premises. Awful will not go again could not eat an get out quick enough Its a place for local people not just a drop in place for a pleasant bite to eat.

Went with my girlfriend yesterday.Smashing food, great value for money. Had a burger that was bigger than two fists and it was amazing! Great offers available and even if you don't cash in on them, you'll still get your money's worth. Great service, staff looked after us well without being overbearing. It's a very large pub, however, it's such a crying shame to see it filled to the rafters for the football games as it's an ideal pub for such events. But it does have a lot of promise.

Just came back from a birthday meal with the better half. Food is more than decent and quality has definitely gone up since the revamp. We had starters, mains and pudding and can't think of a lot to complain about. The order for the mains was taken down wrong but was sorted out very quickly. There was an England v Scotland match on so the atmosphere was really good, but generally the atmosphere isn't fantastic because its such a large pub.

Got taken here for a meal out on my birthday and enjoyed it a lot. Food was good and in line with the prices. Service was well done. I used to drink at The Claregate in the late 80's when it would be packed out on a Friday but its now a lot quieter and a nice place for a family meal.

I like the Claregate, it's spacious and it's dated but in a good way as many new establishments feel cold and sterile. This place is warm and friendly and you can walk in at any time and find a table. Another plus point is no matter what time of day you go or how busy they are you will always get your food within 30 minutes and the portions reflect the price you pay. On the downside one tiny negative is that the 2-4-10 menu has gone and whilst prices haven't risen greatly it doesn't feel quite like the bargain you used to get before but as a whole 4/5 and a pub that's still open these days...well speaks for itself!

I never normally review places to eat but this was worth a mention. Myself, my partner and 4 year old visited there this evening. It wasn't too busy. There is a good choice on the menu, including the children's menu. The staff were very friendly and were very good with our son. They made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. It has no doubt changed for the better since last visiting there a couple of years back. Well worth a visit!

I visit this pub fairly regularly to play the pub quiz and have a meal, I understand that there is other regular live entertainment on but I haven't personally attended any as of yet. Food wise the pub serves what you'd expect from a branded pub, it's your standard meals that I assume are most likely centrally prepared and just reheated. Having said that, the food is consistent and we've never had a unpleasant meal here. It's 2-4-1 but as most of the meals are very expensive for what they are I wouldn't class it as a good deal, rather a fairer price. I've always found the staff to be very friendly and efficient even when the pub is busy which is a rare occurrence in most places. The outside of the pub isn't the most appealing as the carpark is full of very deep holes and broken glass has been a regular feature (or maybe it's the same glass that's never cleared up!) and the internal décor could do with an update to stay in competition with other local pubs.I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here but I'm quite happy to visit regularly as a quiz player and eat at the same time.

I am a regular eater at The Claregate, tonight 03.07.12. two of our party had fish with chips and peas. The fish for both was well undercooked. I spoke to the nice guy behind the bar and he took them back for another. In all fairness he came over and offered a round of drinks (driving) so the kids had a pudding whilst we waited for our fish. Next ones came out and were again well undercooked. I asked the guy if it was a different chef (yes, the manager). By well undercooked I mean slimy and mushy under the batter. The manager sent out the guy to tell us that is how the fish should be and therefore why I am leaving this feedback. Hold your hands up Claregate dont fob off the regulars.Wasnt overly fussed until the (male) manager/ chef tried to tell fob us off.

The food in the Claregate is not out of this world, it's pretty much what you expect for a large pub - that isn't to say it's bad - just don't expect anything amazing. The specials board is often the best option, 2 for 1 where you get the cheapest of the two for free.A good selection of beers, usually a couple of different ales on rotation from the Marston's / Banks's stable as well as the regular Banks's Mild and Bitter. Of course the usual lagers, wines and spirits are also available. There is a good atmosphere in the Claregate, whether you've come out for a family meal or beers with the lads. Occasional entertainment as well, such as a weekly quiz night and live music. Also has a smoking area and outdoor seating, with an ample car park.

Only been once but not going again. The cook wore what looked like a dirty old football top, the place is tired, the staff don't seem to want to be there and won't smile.
