Chipmongers Portstewart in Coleraine

I don't normally write reviews but I feel like I have to after our negative experience at Chip Mongers. My family and I ordered a share box a chip and a portion of monkfish which cost over £40. We were told to wait 40 minutes which was forgivable due to the large queue. Whenever we received the food it came in a small box with enough food for just one person. Between the 5 of us, we had enough for a couple of mouthfuls each on our plates with a quarter of the portion being salad that was not fresh and we would have thrown it out if we found it in our fridge. As little as it was the chips and monkfish tasted nice. This caused great levels of stress on our holiday and resulted in us having to cook a full meal after finishing. Absolute robbery at over £40 and we will never be coming back again. We regret not taking photos and this is not an exaggeration.

Portion sizes were quite miserable especially for the price, doubtful I'll be back

A great place to get food in Portstewart. There is a great selection of food to choose from at a really good price. There is the option to either eat in or takeaway and the electronic order stations make ordering your food quick and efficient.

Visited here and ordered 2 fish, 2 chips a pastie and curry sauce, when I got home they hadn't given us half of what we ordered, the rest of the food was sub standard and definitely had alot better from other chippies in the North coast, when I rang to complain the staff weren't helpful and didn't really care... WON'T BE BACK..

Cod Supper here, lovely cooked soft fish, chips where good, maybe a little under cooked with a little bite in the potatoe. Would go back...

The good things - freindly staff and chef, the batter was very good. Ok things - the fish was maybe slightly over cooked and small for the price. In my opinion the music cheapens the atmosphhere, loud radio 1 pop, wouldn't be my choice for the style of the restaurant. I will go again maybe to take away, i think the chef / boss cares so thats why im giving as constructive feedback as possible 😎

This was our second time visiting the chipmongers. A fish supper, fish gougons super with two bottles of coke. The size and taste of the fish ok and tasted very nice. Unfortunately i could not say the same for the chips. We were expecting nice freshly made chips but what we got seemed like leftovers from the previous day, hard and tasteless, very disappointed. The portion size just covered the bottom of the box. For over £26 i felt it was a tat to expensive. Don't think we'll be there a third time tbh.

We were up in Portstewart for a few days and ate at Chipmongers maybe three or four times! Really easy to order online and always ready by the time I got there! Great food! Friendly staff! Will be back again the next time we are in the area! Yummy

We ate very well. Children had burgers. Husband and I had a shared seafood platter.

Amazing fish and chips and lovely mushy peas. Good sized portions and the fish had lovely meaty bits. Near enough the Strand to eat on the beach. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a 5* fish and chips

Chips were undercooked and hard fish was average not worth the money

The chips loaded with pulled pork and beef was incredible!

Down staying in portstewart was reccomend here for best fish and chips didn't dissapoint beautiful.

Food is OK but chips are quite soggy, kids portion sizes are dismal and the staff we've encountered have been less than welcoming.

I went here with a group of friends and ordered a takeaway fish supper - when we arrived back home, the box contained a small piece of fish and less than twenty small chips - there was a lot of empty space in the box. What little food there was tasted okay, but we all agreed that the portion size was pathetically small, especially given it cost £11.50 - a rip-off. This was my first and last visit to Chipmongers, there are plenty of other chip shops who give decent portion sizes.

Was recommended by the accommodation host and was okay nothing special. Just an expensive chipper to be honest nothing special but food was nice.

Fabulous food. Great service. All six of our meals were excellent. The seafood chowder and thai monkfish curry were fantastic. Will definitely be going back.

As busy as a good chippie should be. To my taste, best in town.

Whilst I'm all for supporting local business , unfortunately my visit to Chipmongers will easily rank as the worst chippy I've ever visited . Service was shocking, the "sit in" area was freezing (we sat with our coats on) And the manager was more interested in repeating that it was 15% more to sit in No menus No cutlery Zero effort by staff The "signature" burger was a cold 2oz frozen lynas burger The kiddies goujon meal was a spicy fillet that kids couldn't eat as it was rock hard and spicy ( not advertised , and what 2 year old eats spicy goujons ?? We left half our food and went to another restaurant where it was warm , good food and attentive staff I emailed the owners and manager 3 times to advise of the terrible experience, but they never bothered once to acknowledge or reply Absolutely avoid at all costs

Food is next level chippy. Every meal.has been delicious.

Craicin spot for a feed and well worth a try. We will be back.

Award winning and recommended by friends who are locals. We spend a lot of time in Portstewart and this is now our go to for takeaway food. Everything we have tried has been good quality for a decent price. The peppered chicken on chips is one of the best takeaway meals I've ever had, get yourself one as soon as you can.

My favourite fish and chips in Portstewart We ordered a seafood platter And I was a bit disappointed with the squid/calamari 😳 it was burnt or tasteless, but the rest was just perfect. This isn't a complaint, just a little feedback 😊 Turan Truva Güneş

Ordered for take out on Saturday 20th and I am absolutely stunned on how beautiful it was ordered a Christmas chip and ohh it was the best thing iv ever had in my life we have ordered from here a few times and never disappointed it’s absolutely beautiful Thank u so much defo be ordering again

Bit over priced, slightly greasy, average portion size. In short a bit disappointing overall for a supposedly prize winning establishment. Sorry.

The fish and chips is so well presented and soooooo good!

I have dined in, had take out and delivery! Everything was amazing from start to finish. The service you cannot beat very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. Everything is very very clean and the food is just out of this world, it’s fresh, portions are a great size, really good variety of meals and presentation is beautiful. Also love the fact you can bring your own drinks to the establishment. I live in England and I have to make sure whenever I go to Ireland I make a few stops at CHIPMONGERS!!

Basic cheeseburger really wasn’t good. Thin, very cheap looking and tasting meat. I just couldn’t eat it. Chips and battered sausages were fine.

So so disappointed with our experience here, I have never felt more ripped off! We sat in and my partner ordered the Portavogie prawns and chips. Firstly the portion size would barely of been fit for a child. The chips were clearly the wee left overs at the bottom of the fryer basket , all the wee bits that don't get picked up when scooping out the chips, I'd say he got about 3 to 4 normal chip sized chips on the plate. We had to take this back and ask for more chips which we were given, but no apology made. As for the 8 tiny prawns on the plate well there is just no way these were Portavogie prawns, they were tasteless, overcooked like biting into rubber! Quite clearly cheap nasty frozen supermarket prawns , certainly not our local famous Portavogie prawn meat! Just appalled someone would even try and pass these off as Portavogie prawns. Then on to my meal, I had hake and chips, yes the hake was reasonably good, especially in comparison to what my partner had, but again portion size was awful, again barely fit for a child, I had 13 chips, yes that's right I actually counted them because I was just so shocked by what was on my plate. At £32.90 for the 2 dishes including a coke and water this is just not acceptable! Yes I am well aware the price of fish has increased considerably but that price for 2 small plates in a chippy (not a restaurant as they are claiming )was shocking!

We tried the new seafood sharing platter tonight. It was fantastic… really enjoyed the prawns, monkfish, sea bass and new dips.. great addition to the ‘specials menu’. 5 stars as usual CHIPMONGERS ..

Group of 9 people couldn't get into any restaurants on a busy Sunday night. Came across this wee place and we definitely weren't disappointed. The choice of food is lovely and everyone enjoyed their grub. Yes it's not a fully kitted restaurant. I would describe it as a cafe. But its lovely inside, clean and good service. Plus it's BYO.

Possibly the worst chippy I have ever had. 4 of us went to chipmongers on 12/07/22 after falling for their great marketing. Not 1 of us were at all happy with the meal. 1 got a chicken kebab, 1 got pulled beef and chips and 2 of us got salt and chilli chicken. I wish I had taken a picture of the meal. It was embarrassing, grilled pieces of tasteless chicken with some herbs thrown into it with undercooked chips. Pulled beef was something out of a container. How this chippy can call themselves a chippy when they can't even fry chips correctly is beyond me!! No pride in their work whatsoever! Other parties we were with were happy with their SuperFry next door... I think we will be going there instead.

We are on our hols for 3 days an decided this evening on eating out in Chipmongers Portstewart but was very disappointed in meal and price my granddaughter is 3 it would have been a meal for a child 10/12 chips fish an mushy peas I had just fish I did ask for a wee bit of side salad but no got mushy peas and tartar sauce and a cup of tea. Paying the bill was worse they charged 16.50 for fish an chips twice yes I only had fish I did say this at till an was told sorry we will take chips off as a side £4 that left my fish £12.50 our total bill came to £33 instead of 37 sorry folks but you won't see our custom again we were very disappointed...

First time here, sat in, good service, friendly staff and tasty food!

Absolutely beautiful grilled sea bass, fresh green veg and potatoes with a lime dressing cooked to order. Delicious 10/10. Perfect family menu - pulled pork and chips for the kids and something a bit healthier for me :)

Exactly what you would expect from the best chippy in NI & one of the best in the UK. AMAZING service, good fish suppers, but a little pricy. Would highly recommend a visit

Wonderful fresh tasty food! Great wee place ....try it!!

Not impressed after the positive reviews, quality wise too many black chips, fish was cold. Ended up going to Superfrys as well a few doors down.

The fish were cold, the chips were salty enough to make you spit. Despite having tables, we weren't allowed to eat inside. When our food was done and we began to eat it, the chips were stuck together crushed into a bag. Unlike salt, ketchup and vinegar must be paid for. The prices raise expectations beyond what they can give you. To summarise, the chipmonger is definitely not a place to go for fish nor chips.

Absolutely THE BEST chip shop in the area. You pay for what you get and I guarantee you'll not be disappointed. Not one thing that isn't nice.

We were just asked to leave the restaurant as my husband and myself were not prepared to order 2 meals The new policy is that if 2 people are there then you must order 2 meals??? Never heard of this in my life!

Wasn't impressed that the restaurant was empty, but we ordered our meal anyway. Generous portions, well presented. Would have liked a little extra maple syrup on my chicken order, maybe a small jug on the side? Waitress was very attentive, top marks young lady. Will definitely stop by again when we're passing through Portstewart.

If you get the big fry, you won't go home hungry!

Food was excellent we got from the street food menu. Katsu curry on chips and salt and chilli chicken on chips. Really good quality

Tried different burgers, and all have been great, probably the best in the area. Unfortunately only 3 stars as I always find the chips slightly uncooked. This is personal choice. I always ask for them to be slightly overcooked, but I guess cooking in large batches difficult to accommodate my request. I will order a burger again, will just hold the chips.

Customer service could be better

Three times I’ve eaten and each time it’s been good quality chip shop food . But I wonder if it was the fact I ordered a delivery instead of taking away. Tonight has left a bad taste in my mouth and yes it was the order. After waiting over forty minutes for a mid week order and tasting said order, all I can say is don’t expect your delivery to be hot or tasteful as I can assure you this order was neither hot nor tasteful. If the owners take anything away from this review please say you can’t deliver over three miles as I live in portrush and this is just four miles away

The monkfish dish at £8.70 wasn’t really a meal, more snack, no veggies, no carbs. The chocolate ice cream came as chocolate With delivery, i paid £15 for 4 tiny pieces of fish and the wrong ice cream All pretty disappointing and super expensive 😞

Good product but so annoying that NOT FOR THE FIRST TIME you randomly decide to close early. If you advertise your opening hours you should stick to them like anyone else.

V hips were great but not for the first time there was too much Rosemary salt on the chips.

Don't judge by appearance. We had a meal here on Saturday and I didn't really expect anything other than a fish supper. How wrong I was! We had Katsu prawns followed by seafood tagliatelle and I can't praise the cooking and presentation enough, they were superb, the best meal I have had in a very.long time, well done 👍

Great place to sit in for fish and chips

Quite busy in the evening, food was ready within 5 minutes of requested time. I must say it was the nicest fish supper I've ever had.

Best chippy around food is excellent

Loved it, very very tasty chips and I had the beef brisket burger which was great. Yeah its busy and you have to wait but its worth it.

First visit of this week was during work. Paid and waited 20 mins to be told they were out of my order. Second visit deeply disappointed that the app doesn't even work in their own shop.

Really terrible price for quality of food had no ice cream left for kids but still charged for it the goujons where pink very poor customer service not happy of I'm honest.

2 hours I waited to get the wrong order delivered up the road, then they didn’t answer their phone all night (waited 30 mins on the line) so I had to phone the next day. They didn’t apologise, no compensation or gesture of good will, just a “you’ll get a refund for the missing food”.. nice one team 👍🏼

Fish was good but chips were very greasy and not crisp.

First time eating here and they were so busy. Ordered for 8 people, nothing was missing from our order. Food was so good, not greasy and the best I've had in a long time. Will definitely be back.

We've again had one of the best seafood selection to be found in Northern Ireland!!!! Scallops, crab claws, prawns, monkfish curry !!! Served hot , with the perfect dip and nicely presented!!! Definitely recommend to everyone !!! I wish we could have added more photos but we only realized half way through 🤣 but this is just another reason to be back soon again !!!!

Last night we had the specials from Chipmongers with our friends. Prawns, Thai Curry, Lobster, Salmon specail etc. All six dishes were fantastic and of a restaurant standard. Highly recommended.

This is up there with the best chippies we have tried. The food is on another level, you would expect to find it in a restaurant. If you're on the North coast and need a feed you will not be disappointed.
