Have been a diner here for as long as I can remember, food is always cooked to perfection regardless of how busy it gets, staff are always helpful and friendly and will do there best to make your visit as pleasant as possible

Staff could have been friendlier

Came for a family meal last night. Was really worried after the bad reviews but was so pleasantly surprised. The staff were really friendly, the food was delicious and I think it's very unfair to say its dated when I think it's just full of character. All it could do to improve is to lower it's prices as they did seem slightly high.

We have enjoyed celebrating many special occasions here over the past 25 years, however I feel we have had our last visit. The staff seem to have changed and service was extremely slow - after 1 hr 15 we had only had our starter and our waiter was very dismissive. Judging by how quiet it seemed for a Saturday evening other people must be feeling the same. It’s such a shame.

Never been a chines, food on cold plates, rubbish , staff have no idea how to serve , having to ask for serviette, knives , ant to gives warm plates . I’m not a expert but I think it was microwaved warm up crap we will see in the morning . £80 down the drain .

China court has a reputation as being one of the best Chinese’s in the area for decades, my first visit will be my last. The portion sizes were small, the prices were high and the quality of the food was below average. The staff were quite rude at times, asked for an extra portion of prawn crackers (3 times) and a knife (5 times) in the end our ten year old went to the bar and asked for them and got them. My tip to anyone thinking of going, save your money and order a take away from somewhere else.

Free parking. Everything is on ground level, toilets inside.the food was hot served quickly and very nicely cooked. Fairly priced.a good food selection without being too much.our meal with a drink cost about £25. And I'm more than full.

We had a takeaway,it was amazing will be having all ours from them now.

We will not be returning to the China Court. We were greated with "have you booked" (the restaurant was by no means full) when we said no we were thrown an awful look and she just picked up 2 menus, plonked them down on a table and walked off. At this point in hindsight we should have walked out. The customer service was non existent. The food average. We have been to the China Court many times and it is the first time we have not left a tip and we certainly won't be returning. Also the ladies toilets were very grubby. No toilet roll and no hand soap!!! There is no excuse for rudeness!!

We had a takeaway! As the food was not ready we were invited to sit for a while, then informed! The staff were very pleasant and accommodating! The food was of excellent quality! I look forward eating in there!

Whilst visiting family, we decided to try out a local Chinese takeway/restaurant and this one came highly recommended. Staff were super friendly and restaurant was so clean. Didn't have to wait too long to collect our food and everything was cooked to perfection. Portion sizes are super generous and the boxes used to carry your food out are perfect.

Only had a take away. Fair to middling on flavour, good value portion size, if I was served this in the restaurant I would be unhappy

We had a really good evening. The food was lovely the service spot on. Not expensive and for an early evening week night there is an early bird option. What’s to fault??

First time we tried this restaurant. Decor dated but quite common for Chinese restaurants. Aside from our servers forgetting to bring cutlery everything else was great. We thought the food was lovely and plentiful. We had satay chicken, crispy duck, crispy beef, noodles, rice, chicken in black bean sauce. The young staff just need to be more attentive. Will definitely return.

Food amazing service poor 😕 Booked a table but when arrived no table ready. Once sat at the table it took three quarters of an hour for our order to be taken and then it was only taken because we asked. Had to ask for cutlery throughout the meal. Felt like we were a hindrance to them rather than a valued customer

We haven't eaten in but had a takeaway. We phoned in our order and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. When I arrived to collect the order (20 minutes later) it wasn't ready. There were a couple of tables occupied and one person waiting for a takeaway. I waited nearly 15 minutes for our order. I must say the restaurant was very clean and the staff were friendly. Unfortunately we didn't enjoy the food as it was very dry.

The first time that we visited here was around thirty five years ago and we quickly realised that we had found one of the best Chinese restaurants that we've ever eaten at. We last ate here on Saturday, 30th, March and the food was just as good as it was the first time we came. The quality of the ingredients together with the cooking and presentation was of the very highest standard. My favourite dish is probably the King prawn curry and all of the above descriptions regarding the food standards apply precisely to this meal. The staff are attentive, friendly and willing to help when required and all of these things have never varied one bit throughout the times that we've been going.

If your up for a laugh this is the place to go. It was that bad, it made you question if it was a skit. My partner called and booked a table. The person on the phone didn't even ask my partner's name, "yes come, fine, come" in a "whatever" attitude. So we arrived to what could only be described as a converted working men's pub. A proper one where a bloke called Des sang out of tune Neil Diamond on a Tuesday. We asked about the booking and were ordered to go sit in the naughty corner, with a bunch of folk who looked really happy about being alive. One bloke in his 70's had a 30+ dolly bird. She had so much on she looked like a drag artist. Anyway I digress... Ordering food, I wasn't sure which rice dish to go with my Szechuan chicken. So I asked for a recommendation... "Whichever, come on just choose" (basically translate into I don't give a hoot, order, eat pay and go away.) So the food came and my partner ordered crispy rolls. They tasted like they had been cut in burnt oil, and where cooked from frozen. The crispy coating was just flat and dry and not crispy. My Szechuan came and the chicken was like a rubber ball. Kinda how I imagined chewing on a Chinese ball gag from Temu. Tasted like it had been cooked from frozen. The coating wasn't even crispy, just soggy and sad. The special fried rice wasn't well seasoned. Simply spattered with a teaspoon of MSG. I did ask whether the food was prepped on site, cooked fresh and to order. They said yes but my palette was telling me otherwise. I wasn't rude about it, but I let them know the chicken was like rubber soggy unappetizing and just generally very badly prepared and cooked. When it came to the bill, we entered into bartering. More in an attempt to make the evening more entertaining. The woman asked me if I was able to cook. To her surprise, I can't and I actually make some very good regional Chinese dishes. So she then started to take more notice of the chicken that she was removing, from the table. Even grimacing herself. It could have been a bad night, though I doubt it very much. The atmosphere was like that of a funeral home. Everything tasted and felt like it had been peeled from a bag and purchased from a Chinese wholesaler. Purchased and stuck on ice. Such a shame as we have not seen that many Chinese restaurants in the area, only Chinese takeaways. This is very disappointing. However the waitress was that arrogant and nonchalant. It became funny. Because to be honest I haven't had a service like it. I can't honestly tell if she even liked customers. I can however imagine licking cutlery as a F**CK you gesture.

China Court has been our favourite Chinese/Cantonese restaurant for decades, both eating out as well as takeaway. Has always been premium prices which we’ve been happy to pay as it has reflected the quality of the food. Service is typically that of most Chinese restaurants - speedy but no frills. Having had our first takeaway this evening since last Christmas we were so disappointed (and shocked) at the quality of the food, specifically the chicken. Rice etc was ok and the delivery was fast but both chicken dishes (salt & pepper and sweet & sour) were inedible and unrecognisable from what we’re used to from China Court. The meat was tough, stringy and contained cartilage. Just couldn’t eat it 😖. This prompted me to Google ‘Has this placed changed ownership?’ So disappointing that we aren’t able to risk ordering from them again. Absolutely no comparison to previous experience - what has changed?

Service poor - staff friendly but disorganised- plates not removed when meal/course finished meaning we were handing dirty dishes back as the clean ones were placed - food not warm enough. We did see the recent reviews and were surprised as for years we have enjoyed this restaurant - we should have regarded them as nothing has changed. We were disappointed.

Just been here for a friends birthday, been quite a few times previously and been ok but can honestly say tonight was the worst meal we have had this year and we have had quite a few at different venues. I had the sweet and sour chicken with egg fried rice and it was the worst I've ever had, the chicken was tough and took some chewing and the rice was cold and bland. The waitress didn't seem interested in either her job or the customers and she kept disappearing into a back room to check on children that could quite clearly be heard. Wouldn't recommend and definitely won't be back anytime soon.

I wouldn't normally bash a restaurant, not after hospitality took a bashing during COVID, but China Court had a takeaway service when allowed. Tonight's experience was nothing short of diabolical! Food - very poor. My vegetables in oyster sauce - bland and I couldn't taste any sauce at all. The service - well the staff couldn't have cared less if they'd tried. Starters arrived before drinks, and before serviettes! The young waitress kept attending to a crying baby and two young children behind a curtain near our table. We weren't asked if we wanted dessert (not that we would have stayed longer than we needed to). My Chinese tea was served in an English teapot and despite stirring it several times it still came out as almost clear water. If we hadn't just managed to get in for the Early Bird prices, I think we would have made more of a fuss. The decor - no excuse for things than easily be fixed, and a lack of cleanliness. Won't be visiting again.

After not been there fir a while we thought we would visit. The food was excellent but the service was left to be desired. After they gad cleared away the main meal no one asked if we would like a sweet or a coffee never mind d another drink. This in my mind let them down as I had to wait 10 mins and had to stop a waitress and ask fir the bill. May be a but more training needed.

Went fir a meal this evening the food was very good but the service lacked thst but if attention to detail. After the main course we were not approached and asked if we wanted a sweet or coffee after sat waiting for 10 mins I had to request the bill. They could have made more money from us as we would both have had a sweet and a coffee disappointed to say the least.

Lady on the bar who takes the bookings very rude said they was fully booked and loads of free tables available,so turn me my partner and 2 kids away,don't deserve to get any customers

My husband visited this evening with 7 friends, I went to pick him up and went inside to wait till they paid the bill. One of the waiting staff was extremely rude to the party and I just had to voice my opinion, this didn't go down very well I'm afraid ! Hospitality at its worst, she was just awful 😞

I don’t usually do this with reviews as every business as a bad day China court as always been our place to go to with friends and family Last night we had booked in for our yearly birthday meal for my mother-in-law and myself 5 of us in total I have recently found out I have to follow a gluten free diet On booking our table my husband asked the question about gluten free. We were told on the phone Anything on the menu could be made gluten free just to mention when ordering .. brilliant On arriving our booking wasn’t on the list ( it happens ) but we were seated. With the menus just thrown on the table and muttering to the other lady in Chinese On ordering everything I asked for on the menu for starters I was advised not to have it So I had no starter I didn’t even bother asking about the mains The food was plentiful, hot and very nice hence the 3 stars After we had finished our food we had another round of drinks while my husband went to pay the bill He had literally just sat back down when the lady came over and told us we had to move as someone else was waiting for our table My husband picked up his drink and stood outside to finish it while the rest of the drinks were scooped up off the table by the same lady and disposed of We have never received this service before and we won’t receive it again as that’s the last time I shall go You cannot even say she was having a bad day she was just plain rude from beginning to end Taking note we arrived at 18.15 And we’re made to leave by 1930 Take your money, throw you out Oh and if you are told everything can be made gluten free take no notice !!

I have been to China Court many times over the years and have always had a wonderful evening. I have been with family members for various celebrations and the staff have really put themselves out to make the evening special. I have been with friends and groups and never had anything but first class service and beautiful food.

Lots of food on the set menu - we had to take some home. Service friendly and good value

Ordered this evening food was absolutely great can't knock it one bit. When delivery turned up it was £8.20 more than I was told over the phone. But quantity and quality made up for it 👌

Great Chinese food. Better than other takeaways I have tried. Have eaten in restaurant and had takeaway too. Both times food was perfect at good prices too. Salt and pepper chicken is amazing 👍

We went early as we prefer an early time slot. Crispy duck for starters, which we really enjoy, however we had to ask for replacement pancakes, which were replaced immediately. They come in a plastic sealed bag now, and difficult to open, therefore cold before you start to eat. . The usual bamboo basket dish with lid is now plastic. The pancakes once opened, after a tussle, were cold, broken and unrollable. The second ones were better, but still collapsed after rolling. Disappointing. The duck, sauce, cucumber and onions were fine. Our main courses were hot, tasty and enjoyable. Service was efficient, and we shall return. It's been our favourite restaurant for some years now.

Worst experience ever. Quite nice looking from the outside but cheap looking inside with paper table cloths. Unpleasant welcome. I have been there with a family. We have been waiting more than an hour for our order. Eventually we got a tasteless food looking like it was taken straight out of microwave oven. Do not recommend to anyone.

Just had a birthday meal, not very good, beer came out of a tin and topped up on draught pump. Not value for money very disappointed, will not be going back.

Luckily I booked in advance as it was very busy at 7.30 when we arrived, Quickly shown to our table with menus. Drinks orders taken, menus perused. After much discussion we decided on set meal for 4 D. Prawn crackers arrived with drinks, After a short time starters arrived, spring rolls prawn toast etc, all flavorsome and hot. 10 minute break, then Shredded Duck with pancakes, perfect, mains arrived after a short break all were perfect, couldn't fault the food, Service throughout was excellent no rush, attentive without being intrusive. Will we return definitely

have been eating here on and off for 30 years, this time a party of 11, food overall very good if not a bit pricey, but the service has deteriorated greatly, waitress very unfriendly and impolite couldn't wait to get us out,restaurant not busy. Spent a lot of money to be treated poorly. Definitely our last visit.

11 of us chose to visit for 2 birthday celebrations and the Service was not up to standard, staff were very ignorant and not friendly at all. We were extremely disappointed with the waitress and her attitude. There were no napkins or cutlery on the table and we had to source an extra chair as the table seating was incorrect. Everything we asked for was given but with arrogance. We have been visiting here for 20 plus years and never had cause to complain but this will be our last visit.

Visited this restaurant this evening not for the first time but sadly will be the last time I have to say the food is really good but the staff are absolutely shocking the manager is the rudest person I’ve seen and shouldn’t be customer facing the waitresses have no clue what’s going on we were asked by 3 of them if we’d had our mains after being sat for 45 mins after finishing our second course of a three course meal In the end we asked for our third course to be boxed up so we could take it home as we’d been sat that long we were no longer hungry All in all two hours of our life we won’t get back and £130 lighter

I told her it was not good enough that she was sending food out after the delivery slot time and she blamed the driver for the lateness and refused to acknowledge that the restaurant was at fault for not sending the food out on time. She offered no resolve, or to chase the order just repeated “we are busy”, the manager then began to shout down the phone even though I was not the one at fault asking what she wanted me to do about the food not arriving. Appalling customer service from the manager. Food was warm at best would not recommend the delivery service.

I would just like to say that the food at china court is amazing and I would like to thank the delivery driver I paid ten pounds too much and the driver returned my money this is a honest and quality restaurant thank very much

Booked a table 8+ days in advance. Arrived on time. Seated, menus provided, then ignored..managed to get someone’s attention to order drinks/food. A party of 10+ then arrived, seated, and drinks within 5 minutes, we were still waiting. Approached staff, quite dismissive initially. We had to approach staff to get our order taken. On the plus side, meal was superb and plentiful. Not a cheap meal, £160+ Service was poor at best, will not revisit.

Just had a takeaway delivered, the food was amazing and hot! The salt and pepper chicken was cooked to perfection, it was the best I have ever had. Well done

1st and last time I will visit this restaurant. I've heard good things, so thought I try it for my self. Ordered special chowmain and salt and pepper ribs. Ribs OK. Chowmain was disgusting. It taisted like everything was re heated, definitely not freshly cooked chicken, didn't attempt the prawns. Very disappointed. The only upside was the chips.

Standards have dropped considerably. Don’t know what has happened to china court but I know we won’t be going back. The place looks shabby and not very clean there was only two staff on I felt sorry for them trying to serve tables and bar at the same time. After being in over a hour we had only had our starter we ended up asking for main meal to take home.this was our wedding anniversary meal spoiled. We have been regular customers for over 20years and it’s sad to see the place go down hill. I can only assume it is under new management.

If it wasn’t for the quality of the food here we would never visit again. The building and interior are looking very tired now. The toilet doors are filthy and have never been painted. I open them with my foot. The curtains have half inch of dust on them. Air conditioning doesn’t seem to work. Door and windows are smashed. Seem to more interested in sorting deliveries and just eat customer out before paying good attention to guests that take time out to visit. The staff can at time be very rude and ignorant especially the older lady who I presume is the owner or manageress. BUT….. You cannot fault the food one bit. All come out together Very hot and fresh. I think the menu need updating as it’s been the same for years. My main gripe on each visit. 12 people sat round one table you get 2 bowls of prawn crackers, 2 crackers each. 2 people sat at one table get 1 bowl each.. You ask for extra bowls for free you get laughed at literally. The bill come in Chinese so you have no idea what you have been charged for. Barnsley needs a new premier Chinese restaurant to make these guys up the game on look feel- decoration, customer experience and especially customer service. With the right tweaks and focus this could be one hell of a place.

We booked a table for 8pm we've been before so know the food is good!! Our meal was lovely there were two of us £73.00 with wine which is ok the problem was when my husband asked the lady server to wrap up what food was left she looked shocked? Came back from the kitchen with take away cartons and threw them on the table So that we!!!! Could pack it up ourselves!!!! SO RUDE AND VERY BAD SERVICE my husband told under no circumstance would we be packing the food so she begrudgingly did it!!! No need to say we won't be returning!

Ordered a delivery today through just eat, it was 40 mins late from time stated, when I rang they said it was on its way but I could tell no one had a clue and the woman on the phone was extremely rude and couldn't care less, 20 mins later it arrived but guess what one dish was missing and the rest was cold, tastless and the noodles very dry, the food was horrible. Telephoned again and complained , said sending missing order out, another 30 mins waisted and that was bland and horrible too by now this is not great and evening pretty much ruined. This isn't the first time orders have been very late. Being going to China Court 30 years it's very disappointing, the staff especially the old woman are very rude and the food has definitely gone down hill. We won't be going there again and I will be telling friends and family not to bother either.

As usual, the food here was great. There was 14 of us that we prebooked and paid a £5 per head deposit. We were sat for around 15 mins on arrival before trying to signal down a waitress to take our drinks orders. Another 15 mins before they asked for our starters and mains. Food came out together which was great. The only downer to our experience is the older lady who works there. I have experienced previously her lack of customer service etiquette, and she didnt disappoint again. On receiving the bill, our deposit hadnt been taken of the total bill. I flagged this upto her at the bar to be told it was right. A colleague of hers (a pleasant chap who was running the till) explained to her that it needed to be taken off. The bill was then reduced. Fine. As we left, the old lady in rushed outside asking where our proof of payment for the deposit was. Luckily we had confirmation on us, but just found her rather rude and quite aggressive. The restaurant needs to cut ties with the individual, has she is a major deterant.

I took a resident from the care home I work at to this establishment. The opening times said 5pm. We arrived at 5 to minimise the noise of crowds due to the man's learning disability. The lady server (currently on the phone taking delivery orders) said we are closed until 530. We said no problem and drove around. We returned 535 and the lady looked surprised we had returned. Sat us down and stated "next time come at 6" we received the menus and I explained I will not be eating as I am a carer for this gentleman and it is his meal out. The main waitress looked at me like I had committed a crime and walked off. 15 minutes later the gentleman's food arrived, 5 minutes after we had still not received any cutlery, napkins or drink. I went up to the bar area to politely ask these items and she demanded me back to my table and she will get them. Once these items had arrived my client finished his meal. I went up to the bar area to pay and while handing over my money the waitress did not even look me in the eye, kept laughing and talking to her colleague in mandarin which was clearly about myself, handed my my change and walked off like I didn't exist. I thought this women must be discriminatory to people with learning difficulties but Looking at other reviews it appears this is a common trait of this female and she really is like this all the time. No one from my care facility will enter China court again and I will make sure every colleague, friend and person I speak to knows not to give a single penny to this establishment. The lady is clearly the owner/manager of front of house.

We visited first time as a family it was very cold in the restaurant, We even saw some people come in and make comments about the temperature when they first sat down, Some even chose to keep their coats on the whole duration. Doesnt look like theres central heating just electric heaters on the wall that were not switched on when temperature was about 1 degree outside as we had sleet outside. The Food was very good though, we really enjoyed it. The staff struggled with service once it started getting a few tables full, No one came to ask us for a second drink which we wanted and no one came with the bill after finishing and waiting over 20 minutes. Staff carry food out from the kitchen but they have to squeeze through the que of people very tight who are waiting for take away so we didnt like seeing our plates of food been so close been brushed past strangers. Nice food but we wont be going back again based on that visit.

Overpriced, Average and Bland! Charged £3.60 for a CAN of stella! A Can! Not on draught a can! Food was bland and luke warm! Won’t be returning! Such a shame! The food was about as cold as the place 😥 £100 wasted!

Booked a table for 10 people but when we arrived the older women was rude and seemingly shocked that a table for so many people had been booked which worried me as it was my daughters birthday and didn't want to be turned away. I found the food ordering process stressful as its not easy ordering for a large family half of which were kids but became increasingly difficult when the person taking the order down was rolling there eyes and sighing loudly. Didn't help that she was standing 6m away from me so I had to shout it. She practically chucked the plates down on the table pushing them to slide over to us. Basically felt like a massive inconvenience to her even tho the table was a big earner for a monday night. Doubt we'll be returning. Shame to put one star as food was really good but service style ruined the evening.

Fantastic service and food. Staff were great, food was lovely. We took food home because there was so much.oh and get some new carpet because it’s looking raggy

Good food as always it was absolutely beautiful. The only downside is the decor which is in desperate need of refurbishment. When we walked in our feet were sticking to the carpet, I thought it was just me to start with but it happened to all of us. It was like being in a nightclub in the 80’s. It is thread-bear near the counter area, definitely time for renewal as this is the first impression of the restaurant. The toilets are also in need of refurbishment, think they are the same toilets, flooring, since the place opened over 20 yrs ago. It is a shame that little things like this have an impact on the experience. For the prices charged they seriously need to consider a new carpet and toilets being refurbished.

Booked table for 6 and left without ordering food. Very poor service, staff more interested in dealing with take aways than customers in restaurant. Sassy waitress rolled her eyes and refused to come to the table to take our order. LONG delay in service. Drinks flat and warm. Won't be returning.
