Chiangmai Bistro in St. Helens

This was our 2nd visit to Goya Bistro and once again cannot fault it. The service is fantastic and recommendations are always fantastic. The food is amazing, so many flavours, always hot and beautifully presented. If your looking for an authentic taste of Thai food you can't go wrong here. Fantastic value for money and we also notice lots of GF dishes and great vegetarian/vegan options available. Help this business out by paying cash as card transaction fees are killing small business owners.

This place is amazing. Both dining in and take away. Firm favourite. The quality of the food is outstanding.

We booked for a Saturday evening at 6.45pm. We arrived slightly early, but our booking could not be found and there was quite some confusion with the young lady on the door. Eventually consulting another slightly older (maybe 20?) young lady we were given a table in the front room. The restaurant has little in the way of ambiance, I spent my evening looking at a plain grey wall behind my wife. Our food to be fair was good, absolutely no complaints there. However it was way too cold in the restaurant, by the time we left, we were both chilled to the bone (and we had kept our jackets on). After our main meal was finished, we asked for the dessert menu and were told they don't serve desserts? I double checked with the slightly older lady (as I say one was around 20 the other around 17?) and this was confirmed. So we asked for two coffees, a black americano and a latte. After a short while the younger one told us they only had instant coffee but no cream. So we politely declined. I visited the toilet, this is a unisex room with no lock on the outer door only the inner cubicle door locks. The one toilet seat does not stay up, so gentlemen have no choice but to 'wee' through the seat. There is no hot water to wash your hands; only cold. The washroom was not particularly clean. Just as we were leaving at 8.28pm, a couple called in and asked if they had a table for two. The younger of the two girls said 'No, sorry.' and they were dismissed. I noted that excluding the two seats we had just vacated, there were another 8 seats available in the back room. Closing time is 10pm. I don't think that she wanted to be bothered with more customers? Overall professionalism was absent, ambiance was almost absent, heating seemed absent. Food good. Would we return? Sadly no.

First time eating here after wanting to try there for some time. Been looking forward to it for so long and well... It did not disappoint and massively lived up to expectations. A small yet very comforting environment with amazing staff who are so sweet and helpful. The food was incredible and tweaked to our perfection after explaining how we each liked our dishes done. Will be back there as soon as we can. Recommend the pad Thai and yellow curry. Both were fantastic. My new favourite place to eat in newton le willows

An excellent Thai restaurant on the high street. It’s small so you need to book but the size means you get great service and personal attention/advice from the owner, we had a great meal … just wish we had somewhere similar on our high street! Oh - they offer takeaway too!

Absolutely amazing food!!! And fantastically advised by the owner who was completely lovely and engaging. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the waiting staff. They were rude, inattentive, and too interested in gossiping and their phones to collect plates and check if their customers required a second drink / anything else. 5* food with a below par experience.

Booked table for 2 on 16/10/2024 time 18:40. Arrived on time only to find he restaurant was closed. Very disappointed as this was our 53rd wedding anniversary meal, which we were looking forward to. The weather conditions that day were horrendous. They never bothered to inform us that they would not be open. Can't comment on the food for obvious reasons. At this point we would not let Goya spoil our evening we found somewhere else to eat and enjoyed our food. Needless to say first impressions count. The lack of contact from Goya was in another restaurant's favour.So thank you Goya for your non Customer service.

Food was lovely as usual, however the Sunday Tapas menu had no prices on it in the restaurant and the waitress was unsure/unclear of this too as well as our local discount card offering. I was only aware of it supposedly being £7 for each dish from it being advertised on social media, however, when I asked the waitress she confirmed some dishes are but the specials were more expensive and if you had prawns or beef it was more expensive too but did not specify how much. This resulted in us getting a larger bill than expected. So maybe something for the restaurant to consider adding going forward for clarity or train staff to know these details. Also the soap in the toilets was basically water which is not hygienic especially for a restaurant.

This was our 3rd visit & this time we combined it with a cooking demonstration. What an excellent way to spend a Sunday lunchtime. The Sunday Tapas were delicious & the cooking was great fun, informative & we made a quick & easy dish to take away. Looking forward to the next visit already. Highly recommended.

My wife and I visited Goya and loved the food! Very reasonably priced and the portion sizes were well enough! Starters, mains, sides and 4 drinks at £65! Will 100% return!

Unfortunately not authentic Thai cuisine. Som Tam was more of a carrot and tomato salad, Yam Nua with tough meat. Both dishes only had dried chilies. Unfortunately that's not enough for another time.

A tiny jewel of a restaurant on Newton-le-Willows High Street - the food was truly exceptional, my husband declared his curry to be the finest he had ever tasted. The service was friendly and efficient and the American members of our party wished they could take the restaurant back with them. As it is small and obviously gaining a reputation for fine food you do need to book in advance, I had tried to book a table last week but left it too late, I won’t make that mistake again!

A lovely Thai experience in a small very friendly Bistro style restaurant. Book in advance if you want a specific date or weekend, it gets booked up for a very good reason but the online booking system is excellent. We visited mid week, it was our first visit and first impression is wow it is small but a great atmosphere, there was the buzz of people enjoying their evening. Goya the owner/chef showed us to our table and offered help if we needed any advice on the menu. You are not rushed, evening bookings mean you have the table for the evening, but you can book for 1700hrs and may need to vacate your table before the evening bookings but 90 mins/2 hours is good for a meal. The menu offers Vegetarian option, GF, and NO MSG!. There is a licensed bar and the wine menu albeit limited was not an issue we were there for the Thai experience. Excellent menu, check online and get an idea, we had starters of "Heavenly Beef" wow!! and papaya salad both brilliant!. The "king prawn red curry" was delicious full of flavour as was the pan fried "Pad Khing". This is a genuine Thai food experience using all the ingredients you would get in Thailand. 100% on my revisit list, although I don't live in the area I am more than happy to make the journey to enjoy quality Thai food.

I attended Goya's Pad Thai cooking class today. It was amazing! Fantastic food, fresh ingredients and she was so easy to follow. I learned loads and took home an amazing meal.

Visited again in March 2024. What a fabulous experience ... Goya also do cooking classes. Given as a present, we attended a cooking class; we got to see how it was cooked first and then cooked our own yellow curry (many other meal options exist, just ask!) under excellent direction. It was brilliant fun. All the ingredients were ready and waiting for us and all we had to do was listen and enjoy. We got to take away what we cooked plus eat the professionally cooked meal. Learnt so much ... many new and correct ways to cook a curry and what to look out for in the ingredients to use too. Brilliant time.😄 ***************************** Below is a review about the restaurant! This is an absolute gem. This tiny little restaurant on the main high street in Newton is a must go to. It has the best tasting Thai meals on offer and such friendly staff. They can prepare meal as vegan options for some but not all dishes - for example, the Massaman curry is simply wonderful. You can also order take away if you do not want to stay in the restaurant, but you will have to pick these up. Such a great little find that is so highly recommended.

Authentic Thai Experience! I recently dined at Goya Bistro and was blown away by the authenticity of the cuisine. From the moment we stepped in, the ambiance transported us to Thailand. Each dish was a delightful. The service was impeccable, with attentive staff who were knowledgeable about the menu and offered excellent recommendations. Overall, a truly remarkable dining experience that I would highly recommend to anyone seeking authentic Thai flavors. Five stars without a doubt!

Four of us had dinner here last week, were really impressed with the quality and presentation of the food, and the service provided by Ms Goya throughout. She made us very welcome, suggested menu items to try and worked very hard as the restaurant became busier during our meal. I did not notice any customers waiting at all for service. What an example she is, and her food was just terrific, cannot wait to return to try the spare ribs.

What a fabulous restaurant, food was incredible and a fabulous host in Goya and her team. This is a beautiful intimate restaurant that serves quality Thai food. 5 of us went, my wife and I, plus my brother in law, sister in law and their 15 year old son. It was a really pleasant atmosphere with great food and some soft background music to give just enough atmosphere. We will return and inform our friends! 10/10 🤟

Our go to Thai restaurant was closed so we researched and found Goya. A 30 min drive took us to this small welcoming gem where we ate the best Thai food ever. 😋

Really lovely, tasty, totally authentic Thai food. Plenty to choose from on the menu, and there is a good choice of gluten-free dishes. This is a small bistro, so make sure that you book a table. One niggle. It was a cold night when we visited, and the restaurant could have benefitted from being warmer. However, we loved the food, and will definitely return. Goya is a very friendly host and is attentive and engaging.

We recently attended as a party of 6 adults and 2 children and all agreed the food was spectacular and the staff were extremely friendly. The chef was so accommodating and was happy to change meals to make them spicier or milder and even let us have two different meats when we couldn't decide. Although there is no kids menu, there were enough sides to make a meal for the children; and they made us some sweet potato fries as well! Although, if you have picky kids, I would likely avoid. We will certainly be returning soon and will likely use them as a regular takeaway from now on as well.

We were excited trying every single dish, from Gaeng Daeng to pad thai to green curry. Flavours were mouthwatering and authentic. We had a warm welcome by the owner and great service by the staff. This spot is a great option to try!

I have been craving good Thai food for a while. Having travelled round Thailand for 6 months and living in Australia for 12 years, where it’s not hard to find good authentic Thai food I have always been disappointed in this country, until now. The food was delicious and authentic and the service was friendly and accommodating. Our first visit, but we will definitely be back. We will be sure to book as the dining space is only really small. Absolutely exquisite I have been coming here for a good few years and it’s always a real treat. By far the best restaurant on the high street and best Thai in the area.

A really nice cosy restaurant with brilliant service and excellent food. First time I've been here and it won't be the last. We had the mixed starter and a portion of chilli chicken. The beef skewers are superb and the chicken satay did not disapoint either, the chicken wings were very tasty and spring rolls too. For main I had chilli pad thai with beef and it was one of the nicest meals I've ever eaten. This restaurant gets a 10/10 from me and il certainly be returning soon. We have been going to Thailand for the last 18 years so known a traditional Thai style meal and this place hits the spot great flavours good portion size and very good choice of menu for Vegetarians too. Brilliant friendly service we will return before we fly back to Australia 🙏

We were in Bangkok earlier this year. The food at Goya was every bit as good as anything we had in Thailand. All at a reasonable price with excellent service. Recommend to book in advance as it is a relatively small restaurant. A definate 10/10 from me.

Visited early Friday with my partner. Beautiful inside well looked after by staff and owner but the star of the show is the food. I had chaingmai plate or one for starter and beef holy basil for mains. Loved it all, I back packed Thailand 20 years ago and lived on beef holy basil and this one was as authentic as them. Proper Thai restaurant , with flavours to match.

I have eaten here in the past and always given the food and service 5*, although I am not what you call a regular, but I just wanted to thank Goya for going above and beyond. My daughter's favourite meal is Goya's Thai yellow curry and I was not aware of her break for Thai New year. Even though she was closed she came to the rescue with a special birthday takeout that made her day very special. Again amazing food and in this case 6* for service! Thank you from a very grateful dad

I asked for a personalised pad Thai and Goya (the owner) was very accommodating and cooked us up something so good I had to ring to personally thank her! She was so friendly and made the effort of greeting us from the kitchen when we went to collect our takeaway to explain exactly how she prepared everything! The food was unreal and we will be back again. Our new favourite takeaway!!

Our first time here and will definitely be going back. We hadn't booked but they managed to fit us in, the food was amazing and the service was first class!
