Cafe Zambezi in Plymouth

Made a booking really looking forward to a good steak and find the place has closed down, even got an email confirmation. The website is still up and running, really disappointed after travelling down from Bath .. shambles

Don't let first impressions make up your mind.. made to feel welcomed bye all staff and very helpful which also included the chef who came out and introduced himself. We had ourselves the seafood platter which was outstanding with a toffee pudding with an African twist and a complimentary glass of house wine. A must try and we will be going back for sure..

Incredibly authentic South African experience. What a find! Cannot wait to go back. We even got to meet the chef and try some homemade biltong. My SA girlfriend loved it and said it tasted ‘just like home’!

Can’t believe we have only just found this place! My South African girlfriend has been looking for somewhere like this for ages. Food was generous and it couldn’t get any more authentic. The dishes are cooked by a South African chef (who came out to greet everyone and chat) and my girlfriend said her wors tasted just like it would do back home. We even got to try a sample of the chefs homemade biltong. Cannot wait to go back and try all the other dishes!

My Family and I really enjoyed it. The service was friendly and the food was great. Really happy to have had some South African cuisine.

This has to be a must if you are feeling hungry, although they cater for vegetarians and vegans (just call in advance to pre-warn), the meat and fish dishes certainly fill any of the spots they hit. Constant care from the staff is amazing, even the chef wants to meet as many diner's as he can to ensure your experience is the best it can be. From the out side this many look like a restaurant to pass by, but if you do you will miss out on a fine dining experience, and customer care that is rarely seen in today's world. I am lucky to be local and to have found this place, my number one recommend to hungry diner's who appreciate good food locally sourced! A+ Check Facebook for review's

We went to this restaurant last night and it was great. Started with chicken wings and butterfly prawns to start which were both delicious. My son then had the ribs and I had a ribeye steak. We were really impressed with how delicious everything was, even down to the spicy little dressing on the side salad. The portions were very large and next time I will ask for more salad and a few less fries. The fries had a coating on them which tasted great. All of their wines are South African and the Sauvignon blanc was perfect. We didn’t have room to try deserts! What also made our night memorable was the lovely waitress who was really friendly and helpful. The chef also care out and you could tell he cares about his cooking and he explained everything is home cooked - even the delicious sauce on the salad. Forget fish and chips on the Barbican - go here!

Visited on Friday 21.06.19 Fabulous Food ( Reasonable Prices, tasty & fresh ) Superb Staff ( attentive, friendly & happy ) It’s nice to read that these things are not one offs, The Chef coming out and talking to clientele is such a nice personal touch and Front of house staff ( She was very friendly, knowledgable and Happy ) So nice to see two people relaxed and happy in their work, a breath of fresh air! PLEASE NOTE: If using a Groupon voucher, don’t just rely on Groupon to complete your booking and give the guys at Cafe Zambezi a ring prior to visit. Thanks again for a lovely night!

Such a personal experience, meeting the South African chef who made recommendations and tried to fully cater to our needs. The food was really lovely; it's exciting to have such cuisine on the doorstep of Plymouth! Would recommend to everyone I meet a visit to this lovely establishment.

Visited here on 25th May as party of 4 sharing a seafood platter for 4. Chef came out prior to talk which was a nice touch and advised us of what fish to expect in the platter. Portions were very generous and tasted excellent, we also tried one of the curries which also was very tasty. Overall very satisfying and will be back soon! Also do some lovely cocktails.

Restaurant is maybe not the easiest to find but worth to search for. Very nice food, chef came out and asked us how we wanted our food and had som suggestions on extras, his suggestions turned out to be perfect

Went there last evening. Had the sharing seafood platter and it was superb. The sauce the mussels were cooked in was beautiful The décor is quirky and interesting. The chef was attentive and very friendly as was the Venezuelan waitress with whom we had an interesting conversation about Venezuela. Will certainly return.

Fantastic restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere. The owner is stand alone in this day and age, helpful and attentive he really made our visit memorable. Excellent food at reasonable prices - perfect. Next time we have a swimming competition in Plymouth, I know where we will go.

Cafe Zambezi has been open since December but I only heard about it recently through word of mouth. I wish I’d known about it earlier! I had a lovely meal there with family on a Friday evening and absolutely loved it. The South African themed decor is awesome and the food is delicious - full of flavour and huge portions! The staff were brilliant and the chef more than happy to go through the menu with us. I had an amazing veggie Babotie, the food is all made fresh so worth giving them a call to check what veggie/vegan options are available. Everyone I was with had meaty options and my partner said it was the best steak he’d ever eaten! The pub below the restaurant has live music on some nights, so after we’d eaten we went downstairs to watch the band which was great fun. All round a brilliant evening! Could not recommend more highly, Plymouth needs more places like this!!

My husband and I came to eat here. I'm South African and was therefore looking forward some traditional home comforts.... I was not disappointed. The food was great, the service was great, and the Dom Pedros (alcoholic milkshake) just rounded off a nice evening perfectly!...

We came here on Mother's Day as my mum spent a lot of time in Southern Africa and it was superb. The service was impeccable with the chef even coming out to check how we wanted things cooked. The bobotie was excellent and my ribs...

The food was amazing, chef is so enthusiastic and enjoys his work. Waitress was knowledgable and friendly. Food is prepared and cooked with experience gained over the years - no pre-packed rubbish here. It must be good because we are going again tonight.
