Cafe Rouge - Salford Quays in Salford

Mum and I were on a coach trip to the Lowry and looking for a non spicy lunch for her as she's very sensitive to the spices they seem to put in everything these days. We chose Cafe Rouge for this reason as it seems to be simple classic food. She had the Demi Poulet and I had a Duck Confit. Both dishes were superbly cooked and full of flavour, proper comfort food! We also had a glass of red wine which was divine too. We shared a Creme Brûlée for dessert, also delicious. The only thing is that we waited a bit long for the food, almost finished a full glass of wine before it came, so we had to order another. I suspect these dishes were so good because they take time to cook, but an accurate estimate of the wait and a recommendation of nibbles if you're hungry would have been appreciated. We also waited for the wine, the dessert menu and again for the bill and had to remind each time. The staff are very relaxed and don't rush you, but if you are on the clock not to miss your coach like we were, it can be a bit stressful to keep having to remind all the time. Would have been 5 stars otherwise!

Sorry for the late review, we visited Cafe Rouge for a pre theatre meal as we have been before, but before covid. Well what a difference, there were four tables taken, the waitess came to take our drinks order, then we ordered calamari for starters to share, that was fine, but then we both ordered beef bourguignon, well what we received were children's portions, I would not say we are big eaters, we were given what resembled a soup bowl! I asked for a jug of water with 2 glasses the waitress slammed 2 glasses of water down on the side of the table, we waited for the desert menu, and we waited, we gave up, and asked for the bill, over £18.00 each for a soup bowl of stew is expensive, we left feeling very disappointed to be honest, good job Rev Richard Cole at the Lowry made our night as Cafe Rouge didn't:(

Had a lovely lunch today with my son in law and 2 grandchildren. We were made to feel very welcome and the food was delicious. Staff are really friendly and the atmosphere relaxed and cheerful. A lovely experience as always. Thank you to Hannah and her staff.

Used to enjoy visiting Cafe Rouge but it’s certainly not what it was. Food today was very poor. The Turkey meal from the festive menu was extremely dry and veg undercooked (almost raw). Potatoes were obviously cheap frozen roasties. The meal was supplied with the tiniest amount of gravy and when we asked for more due to the dry turkey they tried to charge an extra £4.20. We wont be going back and i can no longer recommend which is a shame.

We usually visit Cafe Rouge when we stay at Salford Quays. But, this time was very disappointing. Staff uninterested in customers although not busy. My seabass was okay but potatoes and green beans barely warm. Told waitress not interested. We will not be rushing back. I object to paying nearly £20 when I only ate the fish.

Keep forgetting to review this place but we have always liked Cafe Rouge even if the menu has lost some of its more interesting items (e.g. tagine). Anyhow, we both had sirloin steaks which were perfectly cooked accompanied by a nice glass of red wine. Well recommended !

Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Service was a bit slow but it did get busy. Good menu selection. I ordered a goats cheese, tomato and basil tart with warm rouge salad. The tart had been microwaved and was too hot to eat and all taste had gone out of it! This is below the standard that I would expect of cafe rouge. I understand the need to microwave, however low setting to warm up rather than high heat. It was like eating a tasteless egg custard.

Firstly I would like to say that Barry did a super job serving us. The starters were bland though - ok, but nothing special. The mains however were very tasty as were the desserts. However, when it came to pay the machine didn’t accept my Gpay and the staff just looked blank when I said I didn’t carry my credit cards with me.

It was a little quiet in this restaurant, however my partner and I had a superb main course and desert. I had sea bass followed by sticky toffee pudding which was gluten free ( I have coeliac disease) Hannah looked after us and provided a first class service and we wish we lived nearer as we would be visiting every week to enjoy dinner here.

A very pleasant setting. The menu was more varied than lots of other chains. We chose vegetarian wellington (hot) and a flan with substantial salad. Both were excellent. Hannah, our waitress was charming, and very efficient. Considering she was on her own, we didn't have to wait and she always had a smile on her face. Time of visit 7pm on a Wednesday evening.

After not being happy at the Harvester, we went to Cafe Rouge, which was quite the opposite - very few people in on a Bank Holiday Saturday. But the waitress informed us we would have to wait half an hour for a table, despite the lack of customers and no queue. Time to look elsewhere.

Very disappointing simple meals. Steak frites. Sent first one back as it was cold. Next one - Limp fries. Chewy, grissly steak. Mushrooms on toast tasty but Luke warm. Restaurant wasn’t busy so no reason. They did take the steak frites off the bill.

If this review were based on the server we had initially, it would have been a single star. We've been to Cafe Rouge before and we love it, and when we saw that they were doing Afternoon Tea, it seemed the perfect option when we were being indecisive about what to have. We were greeted fine enough and offered a table, however it went wrong from there. We asked for the afternoon tea, but instead of one croque monsieur and one croque champion, could we have two croquet champignon because one of us is vegetarian, and we were told that was fine after the waitress stood looking vacant for a second. She then asked if we wanted drinks, and we said we wanted the tea with the afternoon... tea? And then we waited. And waited. And waited. Twenty minutes later we were still waiting despite a number of tables around us having their food despite having arrived and ordered later than we did. The server came back over saying she had keyed it into the computer but it hadn't gone through to the kitchen, so they were making it now. We asked how long it would be (because we were both quite hungry by then) and got a really noncommittal response of, oh, er, not long, maybe like five, ten minutes. Honestly, I would rather you say you don't know if you don't know, or at least check with someone who does. She contradicted herself as well by saying she had to put it through as a normal order, and then had to go to the kitchen to let them know it needed to be vegetarian, so how it took over 20 minutes to identify that the order wasn't in doesn't make sense. She wasn't even apologetic until a lady I presume was the manager came over. She was apologetic and really warm and really friendly. We also asked if we could have our tea, which the server seemed to construe as something to be ordered separately, but the manager lady sorted. She also asked if she could get us some drinks by way of apology. Honestly, her attentions were enough to rescue the day, though I won't say no to bubbles when offered. When the afternoon tea actually came it was wonderful. The scones were freshly baked, the cakes were simply stunning and the croque champignon was glorious. The Prosecco was stunning as well. I really commend the manager and thank her for looking after us, but I couldn't bring myself to say the visit was Very Good or Excellent given how it started.
