Once again this restaurant was a joy to visit. I can't understand the negative reviews this place gets. It's family run and although quiet, the food is great. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. We attended with an assistant dog and were made welcome. Just love this restaurant

Complete dead on the night we visited. I suspect local people will have known about the extortionate prices. We had a fish dish and a chicken curry with 3 nans. £39.00 Thought the fish would be at least fresh, nope, it was a battered fish from a packet and some sauce thrown on it to make it look like a fish dish. To hide the taste they had thrown enough chilli to burn your mouth off. As an Asian who eat chilli every day even I had to ask the waiter if the cook had overdose the dish. I suspect it wasn't halal either as I had asked the receptionist.

This lovely quaint restaurant is a family run restaurant with the owne and his family. They are lovely people and so welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble with allergies and the chef has even offered to cook something not even in the menu to accommodate certain allergies. The food is beautiful and bursts with flavours. I've been coming here over twenty years and just love it . Highly recommended for the food but even more for the wonderful family who run it because of the warm welcome you'll receive.

It is always a little concerning when you enter & a place is empty, not even any walk ins for takeaway collection, ordered chicken chat arrived after a few microwave ‘pings’ , tasted as you would expect meat texture hard sliced obviously cold placed into the sauce. The menu states quite clearly that the tandoori is ‘cooked fresh’, hence why was ordered, many microwave ‘pings’ later it arrived dry & fairly awful. Left the meal on the table paid the bill in full, the waitress was not in the least concerned, attend at you peril, I paid the bill in full as times are difficult for the hospitality industry, however I doubt this one will survive.

While staff and service are friendly and punctual, my lamb korma takeout was way too sweet for my taste with not much meat (which tasted lovely tho), and my naan was quite greasy. It may well be that this is the authentic bengali style of making korma, but I found it so sweet, i wouldn't finish it. Update 01/2022: My preferred indian in town by now. Best poppadoms, best sauce tray, best spices and dishes across range in Portadown.

What a change in this restaurant from the last time i visited, the food was terrible it had so much lemon in it . The condensation was running down the walls and the mirrors and the place felt very damp and cold and I spent £40 for the pleasure of all this ! The girl who served us was very nice . Wount be back .

Been going here for about 20 years and found a good combination of starters and mains over the years. Have had some great meals and memorable evenings here. However, tonight my meal was disappointing. Although it was tasty, there was very little meat in my mixed tandoori starter and my lamb rogan josh and my daughter's chicken korma was laced with cloves, I thought korma was supposed to be tasty and mild. I mentioned to the waitress that the food was not as good as it used to be I asked if they had changed chef or something and she said no, it's been the same chef for 20 years. We paid our bill without quibble and left a tip. On reflection, there was just one other party of three and only three takeaway customers during our time there this evening. This is unusual in my 20 years of visiting one of the most flavoursome Indian restaurants I look forward to when visiting Northern Ireland. I'm sorry to say, I probably won't be back.

Food was absaloutly delicious! Best Indian food we have had in a long time. Young male waiter was very helpful. Went for a birthday dinner and pre booked table a few days in advance. The only let down was they had no prosecco, we then tired to order the cava only to be told from the manager that we have to let them know in advance when booking that we wanted prosecco. Now I strongly recommend you remove the prosecco from your menu because surly if we want have it on the night.... Without ordering in advance it really shouldn't be there. Felt this was only a cope out because they didn't have it.

Lots of the restaurants in Portadown that we have visited seem to be struggling a bit after lockdown, but no such issues here. Great service, great food. A mucky glass loses one star, but the replaced and refilled, no hassle. We will be back.

The food was dead on could have been better and the staff are so pleasant but what really tipped me over the edge is the place is charging £7.80 for poppadoms. FOR POPPADOMS! I think we all know how the owner is keeping the business a float. Jesus Christ if you like poppadoms you need to get a second mortgage on your house. The rice is free when with a meal which is the only thing that kept me sane.

Have been attending here for a few years always found the food great and staff lovely. Upon my most recent visit my opinion has changed massively. Once seated before being given menu we were asked if we would like popadoms we said yes as in pass these have been given to us as a gesture. There were 3 of us so given 3 popadoms only one off these were eaten. I asked for extra garlic on my order. So when the bill arrived we were charged 5.70 for 3 popadoms and 1.90 for a little extra garlic so I questioned this to be told that it's one popadom per person and charged each so works out at around 1.90 per popadom shocking price I also asked about the garlic which if I had been told at the start it would been extra charge I would been fine with that. Back to the popadoms I then asked well since I have paid for 3 can I have the other 2 to take with me the waiter went into kitchen came out and said they were already in bin so no I couldn't have then as they didn't have any now bearing in mind it was only 7.30pm so plenty hours left off opening but told didn't have any. I said u have charged me for 3 so I'm intilted to the other 2 at this point his phone rang and without even saying excuse me he went on to answer the phone to me this is very rude customer service. He then went in to kitchen return and said I couldn't have the other 2 I paid for but and I quote "Did i want him to get them out of the bin !!!" I was gobsmacked that I was even asked this at this point only who i asmuse was the manager came flying out off kitchen and started shouting at us about not paying for something we had eaten to which my reply was I'm paying for the extra garlic but I shouldn't be paying for the popadoms that I hadn't eaten and more so that I asked for the other 2 and refused so he's expecting me to pay for something I hadn't eaten. I used to really enjoy going here with my family and have also told family a bout it to which now I would tell them to avoid . It is alot dearer also with smaller portions to what u used to get and the staff were lovely but now they are rude and there was new member off staff who was clearly being trained but made u feel uncomfortable as while the male waiter ran around she stood behind counter watching every mouth full we were eating. I would recommend everyone to avoid here or if u are going only order popadoms for people who are going to eat them and also watch ur bill for extras added. The manager need to learn some manners as all he done was shout in my face when I was speaking to him at a calm and respectful manor. We said we wouldn't be back to which the waiter replied " with customer like u we don't want u back there's the door u can leave through it ". AVOID THIS RESTAURANT. We travelled from lisburn to here so it's not like it's just around the corner for us to be spoken n treated like this.

I used to go here every weekend, but after this latest visit i won't be back. The prices have increased so much so that its now a complete rip off and the food hasn't improved or increased in portion size to warrant the price increase. We used to order poppadoms and two vegetable mains without rice and two naan breads which was around the £20 mark, but the last time it was nearly £35, which i thought was very over priced. Had a take away meal from this place this evening - and whilst it was delicious- on reflection it was extremely overpriced. £21.55 for ONE main course with 2 sides, 1 naan and 2 x popadoms with the dips. I questioned the price and it was broken down for me (the popadoms were individually priced AS WAS the dips etc - to note these are normally complimentary in other Restaurants). After reading some of the bad comments about this restaurant- I can only assume they were having a bad day. We went last night and had a beautiful meal, the waiter recommended suitable dishes for us. The service was good- they must have had 2 trainees on last night - even they were good. The decor is very dated but with food as nice as it was - this can be excused. The portions weren't huge but just enough , well seasoned and cooked. The restaurant was busy and as far as I could see everyone was happy.

The was our first visit in a few months to what is a sound standard of Indian food. The meal was good but we wondered why we were the only people in the restaurant. Imagine our surprise when we got our bill to find that the prices had almost doubled in the space of a few months. My husband queried the bill and we were told that they bring their spices all the way from..... No not India but Birmingham. The waiter also explained rising costs. I fully appreciate that all prices of goods and services have increased but this is shocking. Sadly you lost our custom tonight. Don't be surprised to see other loyal customers go elsewhere.

Yet much to my disappointment there is one dish I cannot master. I can get it close but just not close enough. This dish is the Bengal chicken curry/Madras.My husband (the fussiest of all) reakons (and we all agree) it is best he has ever tasted and yes good n all a cook I am we still happily pay money for the Bengal curry. It's still there and has been for many yrs and we can only advise from our own experiences but they must be doing something right.

Its obvious some people have a personal vendetta against the Bengal. I mean if you didn't like it the first time why bother going back? Maybe some form of mental disability or just plain stupid! So the TRUTH about the Bengal. I have been eating here for over 10 years and the food is exempt.. The service is fantastic and the owner makes sure of that, yes it can be a wee bit slow with big partys but chill and have a Cobra or two. Never had to complain but if I had to I am sure the matter would be delt with quickly and professionally. So take my word for it, its well worth a visit for a very reasonably priced and fantastically cooked Meal. For those who eat Asda Microwave meals just show how cheep they are and probably safer eating els where in the town or staying at home

Shocking. Dreadful. Management should be ashamed to even open the door.Attended a pre-booked birthday party in the upstairs room. Talk about sardines in a can. We were shoe horned in and unable to use the toilet without disturbing about 7 others. We had pre-ordered the food but this was a waste of time. 25 of us. Main course took 63 minutes, I refer to the time between the first main course being set on the table snd the 25th. Many of the dishes were not what we had ordered. There was enough rice to feed an army albeit only 7 had been ordered. Nann breads were in short supply although 16 had heen pre-ordered.And the food. 0/10. Truly appalling. Lukewarm going on cold. And some of the courses were so spicy hot that some of the children didn't eat. I had requested an extra hot dish and, being the only person to have ordered this dish, there was no confusion over who it was for. Cold, with slimy sauce. All in all an abysmal excuse for a restaurant. I would advise customers seeking to dine upstsirs to go elsewhere. Animals eat better in the zoo. The staff? Trained by clowns I think. The restaurant was totally unequiped for a pte-planned biryhday party with pre-booked food. I haxard to think what eould have happened if we had not pre-ordered.Do yourself a BIG favour. Spend your money rlsewhere.

The Decor is dated but but the quality of service and food more than makes up for it.We visited with family for a birthday and everything was fantastic from the naan to the korma. It is a small restaurant and maybe only seats 20 people but it is a benifit to the restaurant

Don't normally write tripadvisor reviews however came across the below review & absolutely had to contest it! I've been a customer of the Bengal for years now & never had a bad meal. Love Indian food however it is a treat- being very calorific I would only take a notion for Indian every couple of months or so. Granted, the restaurant could do with a revamp- it's outdated & the toilets are a bit tired looking; however; facilities are clean, tidy and I'm sure the restaurant prides itself on having traditional decor. It's not an issue for me as I don't go to look at the wallpaper! The staff are professional & very courteous, always remember your face and welcome you in! Prices are cheap both in terms of food & drink- if I remember correctly a bottle of house red/ White is about £8 or maybe £9. Why on earth should they do BYO? The whole point of going to a restaurant is to sample THEIR food & THEIR wine! Knowing for a fact that other local restaurants market some of the same bottles of wine at higher prices, the below reviewer stating that the drink is dear is a completely invalid complaint. Restaurants have incredibly high overheads- if you can't afford to eat out then get a meal box from Tesco! The Bengal could easily increase their prices on drink; however I'm sure they appreciate that their customers enjoy going there as a very affordable evening out. Personal favourite is their peshwari nan, best I've ever had!

Having read, 3, reviews we ventured in to the Bengal. Dingy isn't the word. Living in England and with a much wider choice I suppose I expected the same. The restaurant is well overdue a revamp. Looks likeba penny has not been spent on it since the day it opened.Food, bearing in mind ehat I've said already I expected the worst. But we were pleasantly surprised. But if you want vegetables in your fish ask for them. Otherwise it's chicken in sauce and not a pepper or onion in sight.Alcohol, vastly overpriced. Again I compare this to prices in England. Most Asian restsurants now permit you to bring your own booze and here the Bengal could learn a lesson.A meal costing £176, 6 of us, with about £68 of that for 1bottle of wine and lagers. I don't drink lager and bitter, ehat's that? All in all, not a restaurant I'd be in a hurry back to.

I have been to the Bengal on several occasions and have never been let down. Cleanliness, pleasant staff, ambient surroundings and of course the excellent food. My wife and I had a beautiful meal with drinks that made our wedding anniversary quite memorable.

Lovely starters of prawns and samosa. Then dopiaza, which was spicy and tasty, butter chicken and saag. These were all excellent. Pilau rice was extra and quite expensive but very tasty. Excellent, knowledgeable service. Played pop music rather than Indian music which impacted the ambience a bit. Still, a lovely meal and evening out. £110 for four including one round of drinks (two half-beers and two soft drinks).

Go here regularly for a mixed kebab with king nan , a belly buster not for the faint hearted, lovely taste, good price and very satisfying.
