Bawon Chinese Takeaway in North Down

The seating was a bad idea nobody wants to be watched while having their dinner. The chips have been changed to thin unlike its predecessor. The kids portions are generous, but they no longer come with a can of coke like they used to. They got rid of the Bawon salt and chili combo :(. The menu has stock photos. In my opinion, bring back bawon!

The worst chinese meal I've had in a long time, chicken fried rice was so beyond stodgy i could of re rendered my house,minimal meat satay sauce was so watery and bland. Don't get me started on the chow main.

Food was good, but the wait was over an hour

So poor ... Satay skewers inedible so dry and overcooked...rice is all wrong ...almost like arborio short grain...all stuck together.. fried veg was like taken from a ban Marie which was stewing all day...just bad all round and ended in bin. Strange because have friends who rave about some of the other sites they have recently opened.

Everything was so salty!!!! That's all that could be tasted unfortunately. Very disappointed after all the hype. Hope it improves.

Food was garbage, chicken fried rice was tastless and beef in the curry was like leather, also heard today that the owner takes the staffs tips, owner seems to be their rat in the kitchen

Last Monday was First ( and sadly last) visit. Disappointed with quality and The overuse of chilli was ridiculous (dishes with one chilli icon) . We couldn't finish. It's local and wish the place success. But they must take heed of reviews. Bawon was much better.

Firstly it was nearly 3 hours for a delivery on a Wednesday evening and this was not communicated at ordering. The rice was stodgy, the chow mein was soggy and tasteless with very little chicken, the curry sauce was watery and the beef was tough. Do not recommend!

Food ordered at 17:03, supposed to be delivered at 17:55. Arrived at 18:45. Restaurant wouldn’t accept calls. Rice was like uncle bens microwave rice and chicken was chewy, very disappointed.

Still working on the express part as they will keep you waiting.

Waka took over the Bawon Chinese in Ballyholme in mid March 2025. I have ordered three meals from them since then as the previous food was excellent, but the food is now unpleasant. Week 1. Opening weekend. My telephone order was mislaid. So I had to order again when I went to pick up. The Korean Curry and fried rice wasn't good. I hadn't had the Korean curry before but I thought I'd try it as it was a recommendation, so I don't know if the taste was what it was meant to be. I washed the sauce off the chicken and chopped it up for the dogs. The fried rice was just really odd. Very solid, as though soaked in lard or something. I excused them as week one pressure. Week 2. I thought, give them something simple. Sweet and Sour Chicken (Hong Kong style) with fried rice. The main dish was slightly better, but the sauce tasted as though it was just poured out of a jar and mixed with precooked chicken. The fried rice was still really odd. The dogs again had a good weekend. Week 3. Chicken Fried rice. Just a horrible taste and consistency. The dogs seemed to like it. 3 strikes and they're out. Such a shame as this Chinese was brilliant for about 10 years and is our closest.

Worst beef curry ever. Tough thick beef, poor tasteless onions and sauce. Worst rice in 39 years using Chinese restaurants - stodgy. Service was good but nothing else. We had the Chow Mein last week and that was good but the very poor curry and rice makes it difficult for us to return after using Ba Won for 12 years with no complaints. Where is your quality control? If you serve poor food you will not survive. The local community deserve better. Just because you are very very busy doesn’t make you a top class carry out restaurant. Hopefully you will take on board the many poor reviews you have had.

I have given a one star rating because zero was not an option. Telephone mail box full. Unable to complete an on-line order because of a ‘Merchant Closed’ message.

Spent 30quid for dinner.....got home 3 bites in and lovely black hair in noodles.... called to discuss with them, no call back and blocked my number

Payed 30£ for a porshen size that u get from McDonalds for 10£ food was cold rice was like porage models were like rubber sweet snakes all round uneatabel never get from there again

Woeful. Stopd waiting 35 minutes for two chips for them to be cold. Never Again.

We found the food to be mostly alright—nothing exceptional, but certainly more enjoyable than some of the recent reviews had led us to expect. There was a sense that the ingredients might not have been the highest quality, but overall the dishes were edible and reasonably well-prepared. Our main issue, however, was the extremely long wait time for delivery. It was significantly delayed beyond the estimated window, which did dampen the overall experience. While it wasn’t a disaster by any means, the combination of average food and a very slow delivery makes it unlikely we’d rush to order again. That said, it wasn’t as bad as we feared, and with some improvements—particularly around delivery times—it could be a decent option.

Food was cold and rice was another thing never had such a bad meal and I heard the the young staffs on counter don't recieve any tips left for them owner takes it all and they have to pay out of there wages any shortages out of till is taken out of there wages now this is against the young staff employment rights and is absolutely disgraceful so will be reported to relevance authorities

Big change since last iteration. Chicken dish was nice, although despite asking on online order and in the shop, they still got the request wrong. New layout isn't great either, with a small hatch and no signage or explanation for queuing for walk in, online, or telephone ordering which creates big delays and queues. Also never had french fries instead of chips at a Chinese.

Poorly knowledgeable staff about their menu and the food is average at best. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Ordered food tonight at 4:35 didn’t get delivered until 7pm. I asked the guy on the phone how long delivery would be and he didn’t advise it would take 2 and a half hours! They switched their phones off so I had no idea it was going to arrive as I had no way of contacting them. My partner decided to drive down to their store about 5 minutes before it had arrived! Delivery driver wasn’t apologetic and just said it’s very busy, crap service and to add to it the food was dire. Salted chilli chips were overcooked , the curry had potato in it and barely any chicken!? But the worst bit was the rice; it was sooo stodgy, the worst fried rice I’ve had from a Chinese. First and last time ordering from waka, so over hyped on tik tok. Do not waste your time

Had a chicken fried rice and gravy from here last week and it was great. Got a beef curry and chips this week and was really disappointed. The chips were terrible and were like the wee ones you get in Mcdonalds. They were cold as they came in a wee paper cup with no lid. The beef was so tough. The best part was the curry sauce. It was lovely. Very slow service. Maybe these are teething problems and things will get better.

Long waiting times for food. But once food comes very tasty. 2 things they MUST change. Prawn crackers need to be free with every order £2.50. Seriously? And the chips are pathetic. Need to be proper chips not skinny chips.

Bawon was good, this new waka is not good

Jerk dry chicken skewers, consisting of folded flaps of meat, and then wadges of rice (like actual balls when trying to lift with a fork), spring rolls not good 😔.... I'd try again in 6 months when teething probs are hopefully overcome but our order Is mostly going in the bin. A shame, cos we were really rooting for a decent Chinese close to home. Fingers crossed for our next order - the flavours are good for the sauces but quality needs addressed. Will try again in a few weeks, hopefully they'll have found their niche and be able to show what they can really do without the pressure of being newly opened 🙏

Put a telephone order through for collection and arrived at the restaurant approx 15 min later. Was kept waiting another 20 min while other customers that had only arrived were served before me. To add insult to injury when I arrived back home the had forgot my half and half. I rang them and all I got was that the next time I was there I would get a free half and half that I paid for. Food wasn't bad but service is awful.

We may all be beautiful people but this place has got rough. Looking over the counter any wonder delivery was delayed, running about like headless chicken, hadn't a clue. Dockets everywhere. Get a better system if you expect to be busy cause if you don't you won't last long. Had better chicken curry in the gaff making it hungover. I miss Bawon! But don't bother changing the name back. We all know the craic. Good luck

Ordered tea from here tonight I got boiled rice with curry sauce and 3 different chicken dishes and what a disappointment, a bowl of the stodgiest rice I’ve ever had.chicken dishes were not nice and the amount of curry sauce was pathetic. Definitely would not go back!!

Honestly the worst Chinese meal I have ever ordered. The rice was all congeelled never seen rice like it.. The chips haha they were French fries. Chicken in peking sauce had a short hair in it. Honestly couldn't get any worse

Ordered at 2 30 today for food too be delivered at 5 10 got food at 6 10 cold dryed up and had too reheat everything first time ordered and last time terrible customer service

Worst meal ever had ordered chicken curry the chicken I’m afraid to say is not chicken breast anymore it is the old process chicken and it was black inside manager tried to tell me that it was chicken breast I said you’re not telling the truth the rice was stuck together I ordered starter duck spring rolls well not what I expected I do not know what it was but it was stinking I also got salted chilli chicken starter and it was cold definitely not be back they would have been better leaving it the way it was owe forgot ,I ordered chips and I got french fry’s terrible not be back

Probably the worst Chinese we've had in a long time. Ordered for collection, arrived and told not ready and to wait, when returning from waiting we realized our food was actually ready and had been sitting getting cold. Ordered gravy sauce too and paid for it only to find it was missing from our order. Staff feel too young to be managing front of house. Disappointed to say the least.

Ordered on the phone and delivery never arrived. Phoned up after half an hour and they said it was on its way. Tried to phone again but couldn’t get through. Very bad experience.

Yikes.. the best part was the £1 salt n chilli chicken... Chips were stone cold, the curry sauce in beef curry had a horrible burnt smell to it. Duck pancakes were also stone cold.... 2 stars because the salt n chilli chicken was very nice everything else well below par... Disappointed very......

Had mixed started and a fried rice dish. Honestly, the food was terrible. The prawn toast was like leather, and the less said about the rice, the better….it was unpleasant, overcooked and came with mystery meats slathered in sweet gravy sauce. Overall, a poor experience and a total waste of over £30

Ordered honey chilli chicken and fried rice last night. Think someone overdid the chilli!! Rice wasn't freshly cooked either. We used to enjoy a carry out from here but in our opinion it just isn't as good.

Get a delivery every saturday from here and they never dissapoint, food is always on time, hot and correct, we order a variety of different menu items and the quality is always terrific, we havent had anything poor from here. The girls on the phones are brilliant even when they are busy, theyre polite, helpful and friendly, have tried many takeaways in and around Bangor and this is by far our favourite, our go to on a Saturday

No vegetarian options.... & poor quality and over priced for what I did receive the last few times anyway

The chicken fried rice was fine but I have had better. Had been out for a few scoops so was happy enough.

Got the Bawon Combo chow mein hot & spicy. Absolutely tasteless with no heat or spice at all.

Absolutely disgraceful. I ordered a veggie chow mein as I'm a vegetarian, got to the bottom of the tub and found a bit of chicken in it!!! This is shocking, real lack of care and attention to detail by the chef, photos attached. We also waited an hour for our food on a Tuesday evening, collected by ourselves, my husband was told 20 minutes and he had to sit and wait.

Used to love the bawon and haven't had it in a while. Unfortunately tonight must have been an off night because the chicken balls, chips and salted chilli chicken were way overcooked leaving them darkened and very crunchy.

Terrible place orderd chicken fried rice with no veg or ham and two large tubs of gravy plus chicken ball got home veg and ham in fried rice and one small tub of gravy 1 large tub of curry sauce went back and got the order replaced got to the car and still wrong two tubs of curry now so went in paid another £6 for two tubs of gravy just to end the problem couldn't be bothered explaining again

Always been our go to for a good Chinese takeaway. However the food from our last three visits has been seriously disappointing. We’re now looking for somewhere different. I don’t think we will be back at Bawon anytime soon.

Glad to see Bawon has improved it's hygiene rating, as it's my local Chinese. Food is decent (usually go for a Chicken Curry or Satay with Crispy Noodles). Portion sizes are good, and you don't give you that bloated feeling after eating!

Guys whats happening here my wife was in a couple of weeks ago and ignored taking over a hour to get her order. Tonight were missing a dish Chicken Curry to be told it will be 30 mins or a credit note? This was and has been best Chinese takeaway in Bangor but has obviously gone down hil

Have ordered from here for a few years now I order nearly the same thing every week but tonight I went in to order my usual which ham fried is a part of and was told they don’t do it after saying to the counter staff several times that I get it most weeks he wasn’t having any of it I’m very disappointed with the experience I have had tonight

Very disappointed with take away last Friday. Bawon food was always great. Such a shame it's gone downhill. Sorry owners. Need to improve your standards before we give you our custom again!

Lovely food, friendly staff! Only thing I would suggest is to add the ability to pay by card as its cash only.

Having being using this take away Bawon since it opened and loved . The takeaway we ordered tonight was so different to what we previously had ordered in the past, something has changed in quality and taste .Very disappointed.

Best Chinese food in Bangor in my humble opinion. Their Thai Green Curry is outstanding. Be prepared for a wait though between about 6 and 7.30pm. That's how popular it is.

Best Chinese around the area by a long shot Updated to one star as it has went downhill a lot lately. I'm not sure how many times they cook their chips but to even call them chips is a bit of a joke. Been going here quite a while but think it's time to move to another Chinese.

Poor food tonight, chicken chow mein has halfed in portion size. Then a combo chow mein ordered was half the portion size and dish was incorrect, it came as a vegetarian chow mein. Not good. Will consider not going back. Would rather have increase in price and proper portion sizes. Plus food not that warm

Best chicken and cashew dish I've had in 2 years.

My local and has always been really good. However, something has changed with the Fried Rice. It clumpy, cloggy and sticky. Not the loose tasty rice it used to be. Shame it ruined a tasty black pepper main course. Edit. Four months on from the above review and the rice appears to be back to normal. Hopefully it was a one off.

I have just spent the £70 I was going to spend at Ba Won at another Chinese restaurant (City Best) in Bangor as I found the staff to be rude when I tried to place my order. I won’t be back, which is a pity as I’ve always found the food top-notch.

So I would use this place on a weekly basis tonight I sent my daughter in to get some chips as she had had a late day to have with her dinner. What we got was far from chips it was like they had been sitting all day under a heat lamp at a £3 a portion it was a disgrace. You fail to forget some of your good customer s can also be just a drop in for a chip customer. Won't be back

Such amazing food but so disappointed as have been trying to get a hold of them for 2 nights now at 10pm but no answer even though they say they close at 11

Food is great however it’s let down by the rudeness of the serving staff. Appreciate they are busy etc but tonight the guy serving hadn’t the time to allow me to speak and he obviously hadn’t the time to deal with customers. Shame cause it’s good grub.

Great 90% of the time, sometimes you get a bland meal, maybe is swapping of staff? Who knows!

I have been searching for a good Chinese in Bangor since moving here a year ago. I tried here tonight after being recommended by a friend. Food was very good and liked the fact you could see all the chefs etc till service very good also. Definitely be back 👍🏻

A first class chinese takeaway. Very good food and brilliant service. Highly recommended by me and my daughter who told me about it.

Everything lovely and hot. Only slight negative was the prawn toast was a bit greasy, otherwise perfect.

Good place for a carry out meal. Plenty of flavour and the meat is tender. Prices reasonable.

Can’t rate this Chinese high enough. The food was amazing, everything cooked perfect and the curry had a lovely kick. Super fast delivery and sent 2 fried rice instead of 1 noodles. Normally the food here is excellent, but on my last visit I was disappointed. The food appeared to be a reheat of previously cooked food. I would normally give it a five star rating but after that experience I feel I cannot. I will return and if there is no improvement I'll not be back.

Food was ok. Sweet and sour sauce was thin. It had a great big onion and peppers in it. It repeated on me all night. Unsure if i would use again.
