We had a lovely stay in one of the apartments. The apartment was spotlessly clean and had everything that you might need for your stay. The beds were very clean and very comfortable. The hotel and apartments are well situated to allow you to be able to enjoy Kirkwall. We had breakfast in the hotel and it was pleasant the staff were quite accommodating. I would definitely recommend the Ayre Hotel and apartments.

We were in Kirkwall for my birthday and decided to look for somewhere special for a birthday meal. We definitely found it with this restaurant. Friendly efficient staff who went that extra mile for their guests. I had a fillet steak my wife had chicken supreme both were cooked to perfection. We followed it with dessert which was excellent as well. Worth every penny and will definitely go back on our next visit to Orkney.

Dined in the restaurant as a party of 10 plus baby Dingle. We arrived slightly late but were still welcomed warmly and taken to a huge table which comfortably sat all 10 of us. The decor was extremely tasteful and colourful, some great pieces of artwork surrounded the table and the whole feel was one of luxury. Drinks order was taken and although we had pre ordered the food, we were told we'd have to wait until everything was made from scratch, this was not a negative in the slightest, just proved they only want to serve the best food they possibly can. Starters were very good, so good that Daddy Dingle sampled each one personally and gave them his seal of approval. The salmon and prawn dish was a real highlight. The mains were also extremely well received, steaks were full of flavour and very succulent, steak and ale pie seemed to be never ending due to the ample filling and the fish looked as if it was on steroids, absolutely huge portions. Desserts were light and tasty, thankfully so after such massive mains and finished off the meal perfectly. We were very well looked after to the point that one lady offered to take baby Dingle for a walk in the pram while she carried out her duties, she also displayed that lovely Orkney sense of humour when dealing with Uncle Zak and his eccentricities. Overall a fantastic experience and would definitely recommend this establishment to anyone making the trip to Orkney.

Having stayed and eaten here many times in the past, I was looking forward to this meal. To begin with, the hotel is very impressive - reception, toilets, and of course the dining room. There was a good choice on the menu, and my wife chose the smoked salmon parcel, followed by Supreme of chicken stuffed with mozzarella with a leek sauce. I had the bacon and brie salad followed by lamb shank. My wife was very impressed with her meal - largish portions, well presented, and very tasty. Unfortunately I could not be so glowing. Again good portions, and well presented, but the bacon in the salad was sliced so thin as to lose all flavour, although the brie was perfect. The lamb just didn't have the flavour I expect (we eat lamb regularly at home) and the gravy, although very plentiful, didn't do anything for me. There was nothing 'bad' about my meal, it just lacked something. There was much to like about the Ayre - we will be back - but I'll pass on the lamb!

We gave this place a go for dinner for the first and last time. Rudderless service where nobody seems to know who is in charge or what to do. Hard to distinguish who were staff as there was no uniform or name badges on. Food was bang average and overcooked fish and chips a big disappointment. Also had scallops which came on a bed of sweetcorn and nothing else??? Bizarre to say the least. Also waited 90 minutes from being seated for mains to arrive. Not acceptable but if you are allowing walk ins when you are already rammed that’s a pretty obvious outcome. Will not be returning.

This was a return stay at the Ayre. There has been a change of ownership since our stay in 2018 and I am pleased to say the same high standards have been maintained. The hotel is in a nice location near the harbour and no distance from the town centre. Parking is not an issue with parking front and rear of the hotel plus a car park at the hotel's annex. Our room was very comfortable and for anyone with mobility issues there is a lift in place. We had one evening meal. The menu covered most tastes, prices were very reasonable and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.Service was very friendly from all staff we met. I must single out Ila who booked us in, served us for our evening meal and for three of our four breakfasts( does she ever go home?)Our only minor criticism was the breakfasts at £10 per head was perhaps slightly expensive for what we got. Gave this place the benefit of the doubt after not hearing any good reports. Bad idea. Scallop starter was actually burnt black on one side but somehow was deemed fit to be served, trying to hide that by turning them burnt side down didn’t work. Ham hough pate was served with oatcakes instead of bread as stated on menu and certainly was not a pate, more like mayonnaise with some flavourless pork crudely shaped onto the plate in the form of a crying pig. All 3 steaks had been cooking since the week before along with the brown moosh that was an excuse for veg, it’s relatively easy to cook a steak to order, especially when the person cooking it would do that as their job, one would assume? Anyway, they were returned and got a different variety of brown moosh veg in its place with an unseasoned steak. The veg really was atrocious. Red cabbage on menu but brown broccoli on plate.Chicken curry tasted like burnt bbq sauce and the chips that came with the scampi I suspect had been swept from behind the fryer and thrown on the plate. The seafood salad looked like it had been put together by a masons labourer. Had some god awful meals recently but this one comes in 1st. How on earth you pay somebody to make food taste, look and feel so bad is beyond comprehension.Thank goodness for the waitress, she was fantastic and we all felt quite embarrassed for her having to come out and serve people this garbage then charge them for it. Top marks for her.

The food then was excellent, well priced, good quantities and food that was different to other hotels with plenty of fresh Orkney produce. What a let down tonight, at best the food was mediocre and much the same as you would eat in any restaurant chain, it was also very overpriced for what it was. Grudgingly I ordered the veg as an extra but would have expected at the cost to come included! Stayed two nights. Comfortable modern rooms, good shower, friendly welcome. Ate in hotel restaurant both nights. It is popular with locals, and easy to see why. The food is straightforward rather then fussily pretentious, with good service to match. Would particularly recommend the deep-fried haddock which is done in a feather-light crispy batter (or breadcrumbs if you prefer), also the haggis (made by a local butcher) with clapshott, which is basically the traditional neeps and tatties mashed together, plus a rich gravy. Delicious!

A very good place for lunch; by the harbour and a pleasant environment. The seafood starters I chose were both very good: the trio of crab, prawns and smoked salmon was generous, and the seared scallops with a purée of peas and black pudding good too. And the service was also very personable and helpful.

Solo visit, dining room quite busy but wee bit of background visit would have been nice as lots of single people there and breaks the clink of cutlery.

Went for lunch one day as was recommended by local. Watch the times for food as they are quite concise and have a lunch and dinner service with a coupe of hours service for each. As there is a pub and a restaurant you should be able to find a table but should book if you want the restaurant as it can be quite busy with locals ( good thing ). Food was priced fairly and the lunchtime steak pie is absolutely delicious, as was the seafood risotto. Dinner the next week was not quite up to scratch for me but quickly remedied by manageress. Can defo recommend eating here and you should book, don’t be afraid to say if you’re not happy as the staff want to be able to send you away with a smile and a full belly!!

We were fortunate to be able to find a table for five available in Kirkwall without a reservation. The food was good, and the atmosphere was pleasant. Before finding this, we tried Buster's, only to have a young child shooting his toy gun continuously behind us and we felt it best to leave! Glad we did! This was a quiet, pleasant place to have a nice dinner with our fellow travelers.

A lunch time visit, the service was slow and the food quality poor. The soup was cold and accompanied by a stale roll, and the pate was accompanied by half a slice of bread.

We secured a table in the conservatory area of the hotel despite it being busy. I had some scallops & prawns in sauce with mash & veg. It was most delicious. My husband had steak pie which was also very good and quite filling. We shared a pudding of cranachan but were rather disappointed as it was mostly ice cream & cream with no sign of any oatmeal & only berries as a topping.

Sunday lunch. Really the opposite of what has been the past experience. It wasn't refined and sophisticated this time, or well presented, but it was certainly cheap. Very limited Sunday menu - and no a la carte offered. Main course was terrible - just nothing to what was supposed to be a roast dinner, and sweetcorn was a very strange choice of vegetable for a roast. There was no vegetarian option - one of our group is vegetarian but can eat fish, so did so. However, if anyone from Trading Standards looks through these reviews, I'd recommend investigating this place for not offering a vegetarian option on the Sunday lunch menu - it is just unfair and very poor business practice - effectively charging people more for being vegetarian - and since vegetarian can be due to religion or medical reasons, it is likely to be discriminatory I'd have thought.

Verhouding prijs / kwaliteit was zoek.

Ate here with family today as we always do when visiting them. Disappointed the Sunday lunch menu has changed and does not include a vegetarian option for main course. Asked if we could have the macaroni cheese which was previously on this menu to be told can only do what's on the menu. Had to take the vegetarian option from the main menu so did not have the three course deal option. Disappointing.

Love Orkney, it's people it's food and it's scenery. My wife and I have stayed in the Ayres Hotel in Kirkwall several times now and our love for the place doesn't diminish with the amount of times we've been or for that matter the weather. I can highly recommend the Ayres Hotel and it's staff we almost feel like family now. Nothing is too much trouble and we're always met by happy smiles. A special mention for Ila who always welcomes us. Comfortable rooms great food and great staff, what more can you ask for.

First time in since new owners arrived, can't fault the service despite being almost full, staff are super friendly and always cater for all your needs, fresh local produce was cooked to perfection, my only criticism would be the warmth of the starter plate being slightly on the cool side for a hot starter however didn't spoil the quality of scallops, very affordable, clean and welcoming. Wishing the new owners and staff all the very best going forward, won't be long before we return.

The Ayre does a great Sunday lunch deal (3 courses for £9.95) which we've tried a few times and always been delighted with the quality of the food. The menu is small, with 3 choices each for starter, main and dessert, and portion size is adequate. Service is very efficient with no long wait between courses and everything cooked perfectly. Its a lovely treat for those Sundays where you can't be bothered with cooking and doing dishes!

We have dined twice in the Ayre Hotel recently and on both occasions, have found the food to be excellent. Their sirloin steak was perhaps the best I have ever tasted, and the accompanying selection of vegetables was brilliant. I would highly recommend this hotel restaurant to all, and will be returning this weekend again.

I had a couple of wonderful days in Kirkwall, staying at Ayre Hotel. The location is great right on the harbour with great parking. The staff were very helpful and professional. I booked a double room and it was perfect for what I needed. My TV remote was not working but a quick trip to reception and the remote was fixed by the time I returned. I had dinner in the restaurant and the salmon dish was lovely. Breakfast was good in the morning, the full cooked was enjoyable.

We had booked a table for 6pm for 11 people, for a 60th birthday meal. We sat at the table and immediately received our starters, they were good and well presented. There were 3 of us still eating our starter when the waitress started taking away the dishes and right away presented is with the main course, we felt we were being rushed and we mentioned this to the waitress. The main course was terrible, dried and stodgy, the lasagna was like a lump of rubber, the roast was a bit dry and tasteless, very little veg, not enjoyable. Again they started clearing away and came with our sweet course, one of our party asked the waitress to take them back and give us time between the courses, 10 minutes later the boss lady came and served our sweet course, she did not look happy. Wasn't a good experience and weil not recommend or go back to this place.
