Anderson's at the Waterloo in Newport

We went for a meal with friends who had eaten here several times previously and rated it highly. The menu is quite small and no vegetarian options shown, although when asked there were two options available, veggie curry and cauliflower steak unfortunately neither of which appealed to me personally. I opted for the potato skins starter as a mains instead which was quite tasty but nothing I could wholeheartedly recommend. My meat eating companions chose off the chalkboard menu but were all left feeling slightly underwhelmed, cassoulet, gammon and chicken, none of which they raved about, in fact they were disappointed too as it wasn’t up to previous standards. The concept behind the pub was apparently to recapture the original Victorian feel but it just looked as if it badly needed updating. Staff were very helpful and friendly but without great food I couldn’t rate it any higher.

Had a brilliant meal chosen and prepared by the friendly chef and my favourite liquorice ice cream with ginger cheesecake to finish. However the seafood course with mussels, and chilli bisque was fantastic. Would recommend. Thank you for the excellent service.

We’ve been coming here for 13 years and it’s still the best dining experience by far in Newport and surrounding area- a real destination restaurant in a boutique hotel. The welcome is genuine, the service spot on and the food is top notch, and at reasonable prices We can walk to our local gastro pub which has similar prices, but we prefer to travel across town to Pill to our favourite restaurant. Tonight hubby had a seafood and cheese fish cake ( which he loved) followed by bass with scallops ( said scallops were the best ever!) I had beef short ribs for main ( fab flavour and chips were divine with huge salad) and liquorice ice cream ( not listed on menu but I asked for it as it’s quite simply sublime, and worth a visit for this alone!). Food was excellent, company great, bill reasonable, and we just love the ambiance of this place( and have previously stayed in the turret room with four poster bed, despite only living a few miles away! ) Use it or lose it!

Booked based on reviews on Trip Adviser and was not disappointed - the food was excellent. A very varied choice of five or so starters and mains and three puddings. 6 of us were eating and between us we had pate, soup and Gurnards to start followed by ox cheeks, rabbit and chicken. Plates were practically licked clean but sadly we didn’t have room left for desserts. Dickie (The Chef) came out for a chat after our meal which was a really nice touch. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back soon!

Anderson's is always a hit, nothing is ever to much for a family group with a few fussy eaters The staff are pleasant and efficient, and would bend over backwards If they thought it would make you're meal better. The food as always was amazing, the sticky toffee pudding was the best ive ever eaten. I would recommend to anyone

I had to return to Anderson's after having such lovely food in the past and the menu for mother's day, meant it was definitely the only place I wanted to have my mother's day lunch. It did not disappoint! The atmosphere was great; lots of families all enjoying each others company. The most difficult thing was choosing just one dish for each course from the menu, even when viewing the menu in advance the choice was such a hard decision due to the fact it all sounded so appealing! The food we had was delicious; all 3 courses! We did have to wait a while however that is to be expected wherever you go out on a day like this. The wait wasn't a problem though it allowed time to marvel at the decor. I can personally recommend the smoked beef wow such a great flavour and addictive too although I was full I just couldn't leave any on the plate.

Read the review by chance and decided to visit. The food and service were fantastic. I have not seen any adverts go out. Really glad i read tripadvisor. We will be returning. Fantastic.

We have eaten Sunday lunch here a number of times. It has always been excellent. Fab cooking, Two courses for £13.95 is just fantastic value for money. So we visited for lunch today and I ordered the smoked beef as my main. It was truly outstanding. One of the best things I have ever eaten. Soft, succulent, smokey and fabulous. The real issue with this is that I could have eaten it again. Will be coming back and will be ordering this again. Also, service good, surroundings lovely and nice cold cider.

A fab bar and restaurant area. History all around. Good meals and very nice chatting to the friendly manager and staff.

Came here with hubby and had the smoked beef sunday roast the chef came out to speak to us and said that they are still developing before they start advertising but my god stop developing and take my money!!!! the staff were so lovely we almost felt liek part of the team rather than customers cannot recommend enough

Had the Valentine's menu last night with my partner and the food was stunning. Always driven past this place and thought it was a lovely old building but never knew about the restaurant. Don't be put off by the surroundings. The staff were lovely and gave great service. Again, the food was gorgeous. Will absolutely be back.
