Absolutely terrible service. To get the waiters attention we had to result to waiving madly as they stood in the back talking. Admittedly, this did become quite comical after a few drinks but it was an ordeal trying to get another one and then waiting and waiting and waiting for your order to turn up. There was never anyone present on the floor.

Wanting to try something different we ventured to Adulis. There was only one other table full of people so I hoped that this was not a bad sign. The menu was extensive and explained what things were. My friend wanted to try the main meal with raw meat and the waitress queried her choice and explained the meat was raw and was she sure she wanted it. Yes she did yet when the food was delivered the waitress said that it was cooked 'just a little bit' which in hindsight was probable a good decision. All the meals were very tasty and filling and whilst there is no cutlery offered the flat bread was cold and a bit spongy. The salad was good and the drinks menu was extensive. It's definitely worth a try

I love Ethiopian/Eritrean food and have been wanting to try this place ever since I walked by it one summer day last year. A friend who lives in the neighborhood suggested we meet there as he had never tried it before, so I finally got to eat here - and it was awesome. The menu is extensive and I spotted a lot of my favorite items from Ethiopian cuisine presented with slight variations and different names. As my friend is vegetarian, we tried the Vegetarian Platter for 2 which came with 8 different menu items, all of which were exceptionally tasty. Their injera is flatter than what I'm used to, but it was just as flavorsome, with a strong sourdough-like taste and great texture. As with Ethiopian restaurants, no cutlery is offered unless you specifically request it - my friend was game to try the meal without, and we both thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. There's a good selection of drinks, but we stuck to soft drinks. Service was friendly and relaxed, which added to the overall enjoyment of our meal as we never felt rushed or intruded upon. The restaurant was relatively busy but never crowded, and though the ambience is not outstanding, it was very welcoming, which is what is most important, really. My friend and I are going to visit again with others soon.

We called in here early Friday evening after failing to get in our preferred place (forgetting it was office party season). We're both vegetarian and the choice of 2 platters was appealing. When the food came it was on an enormous plate with little piles of food tantalisingly arranged on a Injera base (like an aerated pancake). You eat with the pancake (not cutlery). Tasty and original. Never had Eritrean food before - but I certainly will have it again. Good beer too. Only negative was a the slightly lack lustre welcome but the waitress was lovely. Definitely recommend.

We are huge fan of ethiopian food and yesterday evening was the worst experience ever .First in the beginning maybe because i was with a 6 and 10 y/o they offer to put us in the deep back next to the sink.I declined the offer as .... erm no way i want to eat in a whole. Then nicely i have to say they put us in the main room . The decor is very nice and clean . Waitress and waiter was ok mostly with people they fo know but that's fine i won't complain was quite ok.We took the share plate for two (£29) and kifto (£12.90) i asked for mild pepper .We barely ate half of the plate and believe me we force ourselves. Kifto was ok but not enought tasty i couldn't feel any spice, the kind of stew chicken in a very weird brown thick sauce seems burn and no taste just disgusting, the chicken in curry sauce was dice of breast chicken completely dry , lentils and spinach blend.... we are going into ethiopian restaurant every week this is our best cuisine ever but that wasnt ethiopian or erytrerian food no way.... I felt like no spice, no salt , no taste a kind of dust taste We will never go back again and i believe that the one that did enjoyed this restaurant never ate proper ethiopian food. Waste of money and time

Decided to come here with friends after restaurant opposite was fully booked; glad we did. An authentic and interesting cuisine experience. Loved the coffee ceremony and everyone eagerly ate everything put in front of them so success!Note that you will be eating with your fingers so will have to pop to the bathroom to wash hands. If I had a request for the owners it would be to provide heated hand towels (like many Indian restaurants do) at the table before and after eating; so much easier!

Coffee at end is a fun and delicious experience. Didn't pay so can't speak as to value though I will definitely return. Staff are a little inattentive and leave you just too long when you want to order more or pay. Never tried this type of food before and I am always willing to give things a try. The meat dish I chose was nice enough but wish I had chosen what my wife and son chose as theirs came with a sauce. You get a choice of rice or Injera which is a spongelike pancake served cold. It was very sour and not very nice. I eat most anything but this was not tasty. My wife and son loved their food so it was my choice that I made the mistake. The beer was nice and our starters were nice so I cant complain. I would go back again but choose differently.

I ate here recently on a Saturday evening with a friend. I hadn't eaten Eritrean food before, apparently it's very similar to Ethiopian food. We ordered a meat platter for 2, but there was probably enough for 3 people (and I have a hearty appetite). Service was friendly and efficient, and prices are quite reasonable. We have been to a fair number of Eritrean/Ethiopian restaurants in London and have learnt that service is not the reason you visit this type of restaurant, but this was a total disappointment. there are several restaurants offering similar food in London and they should be patronized while this left to its incompetent staff.

Our waiter volunteered no assistance so we went for the chef's selection and a bottle of the honey wine (which was lovely). We waited for our food to come for about an hour. When it came we were given no explanation of what we were eating. The injera bread looked like brown flannels rolled up and was clammy and cold. The food didn't really look very appetising although it was tasty enough and the ingredients were good quality. We passed on puddings which were just bought-in Italian desserts on a third-party printed menu. It wasn't too expensive but I don't think we'll be returning.

The food was not good at all. The Sambusa to start with (which was plonked on my table with a scowl from the young waitress) tasted like a deep fried Ginsters pasty, filled with a vague "meat" which I was assured was chicken but heaven knows what it actually was. Then the main course... oh dear. As part of a large group we ordered the platters. Now if you're going to have communal food which you're all going to tuck into together, we might need more than a solitary napkin for hygiene purposes, given that most people are going to arrive by public transport. This is not helped by the fact the light was on the blink down by the toilets, and no soap in the gents so I couldn't wash my hands properly. The food was served dish by dish into a communal serving plate, but it was mumbled what each dish was, so I had no idea what I was eating. Each of the foods had no flavour itself, just overloaded with spice to mask the cheap meat being used.In defence of the staff, the older of the waitresses was more attentive and trying her best and was keeping control over what was a large party, but undermined by "attitude-girl" who seemed to be experimenting on how hard she could slam a plate down on the table and how deep she could scowl whilst doing so.Suffice to say, it's not for me.

We started by sharing some houmous and some lentil and tomato salad. Then for our main we chose the four-person platter, and we were very glad we did. Eight dishes (three meat, one fish, four vegetable), all delicious and much more varied in terms of flavour and heat than I had expected. There was certainly more than enough to go round. The service was good - not hurried, but the waiter was helpful and attentive without being obsequious. It's by far the best meal of its type I've had and I will definitely go back. MMy husband chose this restaurant as it was easy for his daughter to get to after work and it had a decent vegetarian selection. We went on a Tuesday night so the place was not too busy. We didn't have any starters so I couldn't comment on that, but the mains were all interesting. I had the spicy chicken, which had great flavour but was a little on the hot side for me. My step-daughter had the vegetarian platter for 1 and found it gave her a good variety, her boyfriend had the meat platter for 1 and he really enjoyed it - ours were all served with Injera which was great (though I will admit I had to ask for a knife and fork as the bits of chicken in my dish were a little large). My husband had the grilled fish, which he really enjoyed but he regretted not having something a bit more exciting (like mine). His dish wasn't served with Injera, but when he asked for some they were quickly fetched for him. The Injera are an interesting "bread" - similar to a pancake but with a lemony tang. They are served cold. My only disappointment for the night was that the desserts were not authentic Eritrean - they were frozen ice cream desserts with an Italian feel, that you get in a lot of places (such as pistachio ice-cream). Maybe this is a hang over from the Italian influence in Eritrea?? But perhaps something a bit more traditional would be nice (fresh fruit with mint or a sweet hembesha). Overall I found the meal enjoyable - there was only one waitress but she was friendly and courteous and as the place wasn't overly busy she was able to keep up with the demands of all the diners. Our meal cost approximately £23 per head, which wasn't too bad when you consider we all had a main and a dessert, along with some drinks. Overall I would go back to this restaurant as I would love to explore their menu.

I love this restaurant and go therewhenever I'm in the area but they have two things to work on:it takes an unusual long time from the order to receiving the food - looks like there is one chef in the kitchen and not quick enough to get the food ready in 20-30min. I sometimes waited 40min to get the food and that has put me off a lot. Also when you tend to eat somewhere often, you notice when the food is fresh and when it is not quite so, and that is the case with Adulis - the quality of food sometimes drops. But I like the food and the place and would like to see it thrive.

Add to this, a good beer and very reasonable bill and we would recommend a visit

Some of the food is quite tasty, but as it's all the same consistency, the texture gets pretty boring. It's also quite cold as it is in little mounds on the platter and you pick it up with strips of cold dough. Slow service too

Dined here with four others. The food was plentiful and enjoyed the honey wine. The service was great as was the 'coffee ceremony'. The final bill was very reasonable. All in all a successful evening

3 of us had a bottle of wine, hummus dip to share and a mixed platter of Eritrean/Ethiopian food. We paid about £15 each and we're very happy with the meal but couldn't finish it as there was a lot! The doro wot and tibs were delicious. And the injera tasted just like the real thing! The staff were very nice and the decor was modern and traditional at the same time. Would be even better if it was BYO!

I have been here many times in the last year with different friends and family and had my birthday dinner here in July with 24 friends. Every time we come here, the service is fantastic. The bubbly and friendly manager makes everyone feel welcome and really valued. The food is great, full of flavour, very decent sized portions and with great variety. There is something for everyone on the menu and the chef will cater for your spice preference! I took my parents here a few months ago and my mother normally hates foreign food, but even she got stuck it, ate with her hands and was really impressed. I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for fantastic service, food, atmosphere and experience.

When you think, "What do you want for dinner tonight?", Eritrean is probably not the first to come to mind. But oh how it should be...Having lived opposite for sometime, we regularly have walked past and admired from outside. Tonight, we finally decided to go in. The interior is stunningly decorated with artefacts and paintings from native Eritrea on Africa's East coast, and the atmosphere didn't fail to disappoint.Confused by what to eat, we opted for the Chef's platter. The warm and friendly waiter brought this over and explained the selection, accompanied by fresh sourdough pancakes to eat with. No cutlery here...hands it is. It's ok though, there is a specific hand wash only room to clean and wash. After feasting on the incredible platter, we decided to end with the traditional coffee. This involved the presenting of roasted beans to smell, before being served them as a coffee with incense and popcorn. Yes, popcorn! A brilliant evening and one all should try, we will definitely be returning.

We went for the chef's platter which was over £50 for four people. The portions were tiny and we immediately thought it was extremely bad value for money. We all had very sore stomachs after the meal for about 2 days and my wife vomited and had diahorrea. I will never go back despite the nice decor and friendly service.

Having searched out Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants on three continents, the normal verdict has been food was ok/great, hospitality is warm, but really wish they would go a little more up-market with the rest. Finally found an Eritrean place with everything. First class food; the warm welcome one has grown to expect from this part of the word and at last, a stylish ethnic chic decor desgined with a sure, clean touch. The food is a sensuous product of deeply mellow spicing - the spices are common to Indian cuisine - a result of centuries of Indian-Arabian ocean trade - but the end result is unique. It is a thoroughly satisfying meal with a range of meats, fish, lentils and vegetables, all eaten with injera, a soft sour pancake. As the traditional coffee was prepared by an Eritrean lady in traditional dress, incense wafted among the tables and we sat back replete and satisfied.

Adulis has recently opened up on St John's Hill Clapham Junction. It makes a nice change to have something a bit different on our doorstep. Eritrean food is lovely and I can highly recommend their in-house honey wine, which is great alongside the mix of spicy and flavoursome foods. We tried a mixed 'meat' selection, which included fish dishes and was lovely. Lots of strong flavours. All food is eaten without cutlery, but with the traditional sour dough flat bread (I think called Taita), which makes for an interesting eating experience. The staff here were very friendly and helpful and happy, which creates a nice atmosphere and relaxed feeling to the place. It's nicely decked out and you can have a quieter table up on the mezzanine level if you wish. Beware the slightly over zealous air conditioning unit, but on the whole this is a comfortable, friendly restaurant with good food and service.
