1953 Bar And Restaurant in Scottish Borders

Absolutely blown away by the quality of food. We all had different things and each one tasted completely unique and fresh, not like some places that use a generic sauce. Friendly staff and useful tourist film on TV for distracting toddlers. Don't expect totally quick service - be prepared to wait if you want the food freshly cooked.

Such a lovely evening in 1953 tonight for supper. The staff were absolutely amazing and a real credit to the restaurant. The presentation of the food was stunning, I don't ever take pictures of my food but tonight I felt I really had to and it definitely tasted just as good as it looked too. Good atmosphere, comfortable seating and of course excellent food. Well done everyone. We have to come back ...SOON.... xx

We been here a few time before and it was the best. The food is amazing along with the friendly service. But however, we can on Sunday and the service was not so great. First of all there was a women working that we never seen but was abit rude when coming to table and made us feel rushed. The worse thing was I couldn't understand what she was saying. Not a good experience but will give it another try as food was amazing as always. Where is the other waiter who is always smiling and speaks good English? Think you need him back.

A really decent experience, with the delivery happening a lot quicker than our order last year. Working until 7pm that day, I left my order in the kind hands of my wife, as the family ordered to celebrate my Father-In-Law’s Birthday. So what did I have? I started with a couple of Poppadoms and helped myself to a few of the Pickles (Lime Pickle is always my go to and this one had a lovely kick to it)! For my main, I had a Chicken Madras (the heat was eye watering but somehow bearable), accompanied by a Garlic Naan Bread and Pilau Rice (the Bread in particular was soft and packed with Garlic). Per person, I think the cost worked out around the £22 mark. As local Indian’s go, that’s not overly expensive in the grand scheme of things. In comparison to other local Indians, I think the real winner with 1953 is the selection and standard of the Veggie options - having three in my extended family highlights the importance of this! They’re always very positive in their reviews.

Enjoyed our second trip to 1953… …really liked the potato cakes for starters and curries very good too… Quality garlic naan. And decent value And great to see the place really busy on a Saturday night.

Disappointed after all the reviews about the food. I had the Biriani and it was way to hot and all the rice was stuck together in lumps. The staff were helpful but rushed our meal by bringing the mains before we finished out starter!

10 of us went to the 1953 bar and restaurant as part of a birthday meal and I have to say it's one of if not the best meal iv had in long time. The staff were excellent and very attentive. Despite there being alot of us we didn't have to wait long for food arriving. I'd alos like to point out that it's the not restaurant to serve Gulab Jamun in its dessert menu which is gorgeous. 10/10 if you haven't been already I suggest you do.

We have had a takeaway from here before and it was good. 1st visit to the restaurant tonight and we were not disappointed. Service, food and wine all excellent. We have already book to go back early December.

Wanted to try this resturant since it opened and was not disappointed. GREAT food, GREAT atmosphere and FANTASTIC staff. Probably the best meal out we have had in a long time. We will definitely be back.

I booked via an online booking site, and got confirmed, and also reminded. I was quite surprised when they clearly had no idea of the booking and no table ready. They separated a table for us from an empty row, creating a narrow walkway next to us, which was then used as a corridor by all the staff to get to tables further down the room. It’s a big undivided room, so quite noisy, but no atmosphere. Tables aren’t covered so it’s quite cafeteria style. It was busy, but we found it quite chaotic. There didn’t seem to be any specific waiter for the tables, just whoever was passing. The menu is very disappointing for a napalese/Indian. The only vegetarian curries are side dishes that you can have as a main course, makes you feel very special! Vegans need not bother either as there is a symbol on the menu for ‘dish can be made vegan’ and then there are no dishes with that symbol. We both decided on king prawn dishes, and both were disappointing. The sauces were ok, though nothing special but the vegetables in them, onions and peppers were uncooked. I have had Nepalese before a few times and this wasn’t of the same standard.

This is the 2nd time being here and the food was out of this world. Dessert was amazing. Service was on the ball. Hats off to the chef and waiters and waitresses.

Always wanted to try Nepalese so when we saw this newly opened bar/restaurant we decided to try it. We were not disappointed in the slightest. Every aspect of this experience was excellent the customer service, speed of delivery, presentation, ambience, quality of food, taste was outstanding, presentation, surroundings and the cocktails were fantastic. The staff were beyond helpful and all in uniform the owner was a delight. He takes great pride in his establishment as well he should. We would recommend this venue 100% and definitely will be back.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! 100% recommend. it was amazing from start to finish. the cocktails we ordered were DELICIOUS🤌🏼i had a strawberry daiquiri and my friend had a blue lagoon and they were both amazing! prices were really good for the size of them as well. we then had a chicken pakora starter which was also a 10/10. for mains we ordered chicken makhani with pilau rice and a garlic nan to share😍the visit had no faults to it. from the food to the impeccable service from the waiting staff, particularly the lovely ladies who dealt with us. i would recommend visiting this restaurant to anyone!
