Whitekirk Hill in East Lothian

Attended a wedding this week. What a beautiful venue and attentive staff A special shoutout to Arlene, who went above and beyond ❤️❤️

We had a lovely long weekend with family celebrating a big birthday. Lodge was super comfortable and had everything we needed to cater for us all. The beds were so comfortable and big. The children had a great time at the soft play and then we all went swimming at the pool in the afternoon. Couple of issues with the pool, the water was quite cool for the little ones and the floors in the changing rooms could be checked by the young staff on a regular basis. There was quite a bit of grass and small stones on the floor and was not good for little ones to walk on. A regular check up could massively help. I realise that it’s the adults who do not remove their shoe's or put on the foot covers that is the problem, but an hourly check and hose down would solve the issue. Having said that the staff were all helpful and friendly and we all had a wonderful time. Would very happily stay again.

A relaxing peaceful place for a family get away. Enjoyed the play-barn, swimming pool (and toddler pool), sauna and steam room. Lodge very comfortable and well equipped with sliding doors onto sea facing decking that was perfect tor morning coffee and outdoor fun. It’s a shame that upper level access blocked off in lodge. Steep ladder stairs could be replaced with safer spiral staircase?

Beautiful place for a family day out. We have enjoyed the play followed by a great lunch served outside. Will def be back!

A beautiful location set in the hills. We had a Lodge for 3 nights for 6 people attending a wedding in the hotel/spa. All beautifully clean and well equipped. A wonderful occasion and the weather was kind enough to allow the ceremony to take place outside. Venue, food and staff were excellent. Lovely touches like a fire-pit in the evening. Breakfast in the cafeteria was excellent. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was we didn’t have a car as we flew into Edinburgh and it was sometimes difficult to walk down from the Lodge to the venue on loose gravel and it was unlit. Maybe a couple of golf carts to carry luggage and people up and down the slopes?

Came for a spa afternoon with friends was lovely . I had a back massage and head massage by Laura was best Iv ever had loved it .

We’re regular visitors to whitekirkhill. The food in the restaurant is lovely. We use the softplay frequently but will be reconsidering our options now. They have stopped adults entering the main frame (which is fine) but I feel the options for younger children are too limited. My 2.5yr old is too small for the main frame by themselves but all the kitchen/role play and drawing areas are looking very tired these days and the toys/drawing supplies aren’t replenished. Had to leave after an hour as my youngest was so bored

We spent the night at one of the weir lodges and were blown away location is easy to find but so peaceful and tranquil it feels miles from anything. The lodge was well equipped, clean, private and with a fab welcome package. We also used pool following morning which was beautiful and peaceful and then had brunch at the orangery which was lovely. Highly recommend for anyone looking to get away from normal world and have a bit of chill and disconnect time if looking to stay. But would also recommend as a stop point for food or a cuppa as quality and service was out of this world.

Enjoyed selection of afternoon tea eats. Everything well presented and plenty to eat for our family of 10 people. Top up of tea or coffee when asked. Really enjoyed our get together.

I Would love to be writing a more positive review as we love whitekirk for soft play and have had good experiences in the orangery. But I must admit my partner, mother and I were very disappointed with the Mother’s Day afternoon tea. The sandwich offering was uninspired and tasteless and a bit on the soggy side. The scones were very dry and the cake selection was overly sweet and there seemed to be little imagination in the selection. The free tea top ups were a struggle as there seemed to be a shortage on cups and tea pots. My partner was bought a top up tea but it was in my old flat white cup that had just been taken away. The staff as usual were lovely and you could see they were trying their best to see to the whole room. Perhaps my standards for afternoon tea may be a little high having had some lovely experiences elsewhere. This being said, I definitely think that whitekirk could be producing a much more high quality experience that reflect such a lovely venue.

Luxury self-catering lodges near Edinburgh - perfect for our January family break! They currently have 9 lodges sleeping from 2-10ppl (with big plans for more lodges… 🤩). These are also dog friendly 🐾 As well as the luxury self catering lodges the facilities at Whitekirk Hill are amazing! The Play Barn is a great soft play with loads of different areas for different ages. There is also an outdoor play area (we didn’t make use of due to weather). The pool with jacuzzi/sauna/steam room was lovely! There is a shallow baby pool area which great for us. Worth noting they do restrict family use to the afternoon. Whitekirk Hill also has the Orangery and Terrace onsite serving delicious brunch/lunch! Beautiful family friendly space with lovely staff. We were there at peak time and they did appear short staffed which meant service was a little slow - but we weren’t in a rush and food was decisions. Worthy of a mention - Mexican eggs Benedict - Indian spiced chicken burger - Oreo blondie 🤤 Would love to go back in the summer to explore more of the grounds in nicer weather I have shared more videos on my instagram @eastontravel709

We visited here after the beach with our 3 dogs who were not the cleanest. Received an amazing takeaway from a freshly prepared menu. Also the best coffee we have had for a while. Husband usually sits outside with his cycling crew so seems to cater for all. Will be back

We are a family of 7 and just returned from our 2nd long weekend at Whitekirk Hill. From start to finish, we all agreed, it was fantastic. Arlene and the reception staff were so helpful and friendly. The lodges are so comfortable and stylish and really well equipped. A welcome pack of goodies and a bottle of Prosecco was a lovely touch. The Staff in the Orangery were extremely efficient and attentive - the food was delicious too. Highly recommend and can’t wait for our next visit.

Booked a half day spa as a treat for mother and daughter. Disappointed in the poor lunch menu on arrival. We had looked online at what is described as a gourmet restaurant and menu! The menu and photos on line had included seafood platters, goats cheese plates, and vegan options. The menu offered had none of this and certainly does not offer gourmet food. We opted for the baked potato as the healthiest option but even this was undercooked, oily and inedible! The restaurant is more like a large barn, lacks atmosphere and does not have views! Honestly felt like a cafeteria and no atmosphere! The spa itself consisted of a pool, jacuzzi and steam room as the sauna was out of order. Relaxation room and changing rooms were pleasant but up stairs and no lift offered (mum is 84!) Treatments, and the ladies giving them were very nice and quite frankly the only thing that saved our afternoon. We would not return.

We stayed in the lodges for New year, This was our second visit in 3 months and we will be booking again. The Lodge was immaculately clean so well done to Ryan. The reception staff were all so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. My son who is autistic doesn’t settle in many places but the space in the lodge along with the play barn, swimming pool and surrounding outdoor space made his holiday and he absolutely loves it. The food and staff in the restaurant were all so welcoming and friendly so well done to all the staff.

Nice cosy comfortable cafe with friendly staff. We had a lovely bowl of soup for lunch the day before Parkrun and recced the route for Saturday. After the run we went for breakfast and were very disappointed with the breakfast rolls. Nearly £6 for a roll with ONE sausage and ONE mushroom. Such a shame.

I never leave reviews but our experience did not reflect the negative reviews we had read before visiting the orangery. We were staying at Whitekirk Hill for a spa weekend which included brunch on both days. Customer service was excellence from all staff, the food was served in a reasonable time frame and was really tasty. Absolutely no complaints here!

Staff seated us in the darkest and furthest away corner on a brilliant and sunny day when tables by the windows were free and not reserved either. Food took ages to come. There was no indication of "card payment" only. I ordered "seafood platter" for £ 27.00 - the worst I ever encountered. Chef had not heard of seasoning yet. Totally tasteless. Unless there is a complete change of management and staff it could certainly not be recommended - and that at a potentially super venue.

If you are looking for a fantastic afternoon tea then Merryhatton or Dunbar garden centre are the place for you whereas if you want bland tasteless sandwiches and scones that are dry and been reheated then this is certainly the place for you.

We only came here as the wait for drift was too long. I was expecting good things from here since their lodges and spa look so nice but it was so overpriced and not comparable to competitors such as archerfield. I went with 2 friends, service was slow, it seemed manic even though the place was fairly quiet. I paid £9.95 for a mozzarella, pesto and tomato toastie, it was so bland and had 2 slithers of mozzarella and 2 slices of tomato on cheap supermarket quality bread, like genuinely I could of made it better at home. It was not quality of value for money at all, I’m really disappointed and won’t be back. It came with crisps, salad and slaw, which was fine but without this the sandwich would have been a child’s portion. Other food did look nice, like the burgers, but again massively overpriced.

Not great value, first time I have a deep fried baked potato. £4 for a spoonful of chili with my baked, staff not attentive and not friendly. We won’t be back.

Waitress was rude and condescending. Table service but no-one came and when we asked we were graced with a lecture. Left and went to Dunbar garden centre which was a much better experience

In for breakfast after Park Run with a group of friends. We approached staff to enquire how we ordered and were told it was table service. We waited for 20 mins whilst the waitress seated and took orders from tables around us. We asked twice if someone could take our order and were dismissed by staff, telling us they were busy seating others. Staff were very unhelpful and we were made to feel that we were being unreasonable for asking to order. Very poor service and I don’t recommend. Food was also overpriced. Go to Dunbar Garden centre instead

We were visiting as a family. When we arrived we had a really warm welcome for Arlene who in advance had already send really helpful emails with absolutely everything we could need. Additionally we were bringing a baby and all the equipment supplied was excellent .There was also a lovely welcome bag so tea coffee and wine was available instantly! I had mentioned that my mum lived nearby and would probably eat with us. When we arrived several extra complete sets of crockery had been left for us. At one point I couldn’t work the washer dryer, one of the team came straight up and not only showed me how to work it but reminded us if we needed any other washing tabs or dishwasher tabs he’d bring them up. The Lodge was very well equipped with high quality bedding, and a really stylish lounge diner. The kitchen had everything we needed. The cooker was a range so catering was so easy. Throughout the stay staff kept in touch and were very welcoming. The play barn was a lovely addition to the stay for the baby with friendly staff ( great coffee for us) We didn’t eat in the cafe as it is probably the only weak link in the whole set up. When enquiring about opening times and food available we were met with very disinterested staff. Whilst happy to self cater we would have been interested in a light lunch but decided we could find better. We are now looking to book a slightly larger lodge for what will be our third visit. ( we took a two person lodge a year ago and came back for a bigger one as Arlene and her team were so lovely) The setting with outstanding views and the comfort of the lodge makes it ideal. The location is close to lots of beaches and golf courses so it ticked all the boxes for us. Next time we plan to bring our bikes. We cant wait to return

Was taken here for afternoon tea (as a birthday present). Once seated was asked if we’d like a drink, so iced tap water, latte and milk shake were ordered, the member of staff said that we’d get our FREE drink with the afternoon tea. (I presumed tea, after all it was afternoon tea we had come for) sandwiches where ok, scones where plain with BUTTER and seedless strawberry jam and NO clotted cream, cakes my 3yr niece could have made better only decent item was empire biscuit, at this point we thought our tea would be coming. My friend asked a colleague leaving the restaurant if we could have our tea please to which her swift reply was “I don’t work in restaurant you’ll have to ask someone else” and kept walking. So my friend dutifully went up to ask for our tea, when the colleague came over she asked for our milk jug to which we replied but we haven’t had any tea yet, when she came back I had to ask her for a clean cup as there was a wet coffee stain in one of them. She returned with a clean up. We were not offered a selection of teas even if it was only a choice between decaf and caff. Also at no point did anybody ask us if all was ok or did we need anything. The restaurant was quiet so they had no excuse for not coming over to ask if we needed anything.Certainly won’t be rushing back in a hurry, I’m just sorry my friend had wasted her money. And won’t be shy in telling anyone who asks what it was like, I would have thought that you don’t want to drive customers away but be nice and cordial hoping they come back and bring new customers to, 👎👎👎.

We arrived and we were able to choose our own seats. We were given menus quickly, however we were left and had to ask staff if we could order. The food came quickly, however no one came back to check if everything was ok. We had soup and toastie combo which was £11.95. To soup was tasteless and there was no salt and pepper to try to make it palatable. Two of the children had macaroni cheese, which they did not eat due to being slimy and watery tasting. The only food that was eaten was the hotdog. We waited for someone to come and clear our plates, so we could tell the staff, however no one came. We walked up to till to pay as we just wanted to leave. However, we questioned the bill so the member of staff called on someone from the kitchen. He explained that the bill was correct. When I went on to say about how poor the food was he was not interested at all. It was extremely disappointing and it was a total cost of £60 for lunch for two adults and 3 children.

The eatery is part of the Whitekirk Hill complex and we were satisfied every time we visited it during our week's visit to Whitekirk. As a family we had snacks, drinks and light meals and all were excellent. A lovely touch is that the doggy friends are welcomed with a dog biscuit. My daughter's favourite was the coffee which she went to have regularly. Being self catered lodges the facilities for making 'decent' coffee were limited and definitely did not meet my daughter's exacting taste! For my husband and I (the two oldies and very immobile) it was a daily refuge whilst we waited for the younger members of the family who were swimming or in the play barn. All the food is freshly cooked, so when they run out of anything you have to choose an alternative. Everything is good so it is not a difficult choice!

Take away cappuccino filled only half the cup and was luke warm at best. It bore no resemblance to a cappuccino. Two weeks ago we ordered two scones with butter again to take away. We were told we had to butter the scones ourselves - the butter was in a little dish and wasn’t enough for one scone far less two. We had to request a knife and plate and had to stand at the counter buttering the scones before the assistant placed them in a paper bag. This is a favourite place to walk our dogs which is why we appreciate a takeaway coffee after our walk but what used to be a good experience is deteriorating rapidly

Lovely new restaurant and hotel. We stopped here for a quick bite of lunch. Portions excellent (we had a toastie), staff lovely and it is an unusual area to dine.

I had a full English, good portion size and food very tasty and well cooked. My only criticism is I the sausage was a a poor quality, sawdusty one - I think Richmonds are like that?! Good service, will be back 👍
