The setting is dated back to the 70s, very old fashioned. The service however was excellent, and the food was fantastic, authentic Thai, good portions at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend this little restaurant.

Revisited this restaurant after several years. It has had a revamp and new management and the food was excellent. It is based on Thai street cooking and home recipes and could not be faulted. Delicious. However only opened 4 weeks ago and still teething problems. They are trying to get more staff so service was very slow, and the restaurant was full ( testament to the good food) but organisation was not good with a long time to wait for the bill. It can only get better and we would definitely give it another try. The food is worth another visit and anyone experiencing slow service at this time should not dismiss it.

Terrible service, poor attitude from the young lad with a lip ring. Two meals were served after the rest of the table had finished their dinner. We said we would pay the bill but refused to pay the additional service charge. Can’t believe we were told to pay or they’d call the police... Food was ok not amazing but to pay a service charge is a disgrace. Avoid at all cost

Went to this restaurant to celebrate an event with family and was so disappointed by the service. We were the only people in the restaurant however we had to wait ages to get served. Then we had to wait for our drinks to be brought over to the extent that my husband went and got the tray himself and brought the drinks to the table and gave them out - the waitress came over later and seemed to find it very funny !! We were at the point of leaving when she eventually came and took our food order. The focus seemed to be on take away orders. The food is good but the service was dire and that spoiled everything - we couldn’t wait to get out We were very very disappointed

I ate here a couple of days ago. I had corn cakes as a starter and was really disappointed as it was just sweetcorn in batter which was tasteless, no seasoning at all, and they come in 5 small tiny pieces! A bit pricey for what they serve. I had Thai curry for the main and and it was very tasty. Not the best Thai, but overall experience was good.

Came here with my family (partner & 2.5 year old son). Lovely choice of Thai food and great drinks on offer. We had 3 starters (because there was too many to pic from!) and 2 mains. The Pad Thai was delicious and my bf ordered the duck curry which was nice also. I’m particularly impressed with the staff, the lady came over and kept checking in with us. My son was proving to be difficult (the witching hour!!) and she was just so joyful around him. We’ll come coming again soon!

Very pleasant meal. Started with salted crab and squid. My girlfriend had the pad Thai that she thought was tasty but perhaps should've tried something different. I had the tiger prawn curry. Excellent portion and exceptionally tasty. Big menu, like many Thai restaurants. Would happily go again. Would recommend. We didn't have a booking but it's fairly big and they have lots of tables. Also they have delivery and collection.

I've been here many times and usually go for the duck pineapple red curry or massaman. This time we had the mixed plate starter which includes pork rib chicken satay, fish cake and spring roll. Sauces were satay and sweet chilli. Satay sauce was lovely but the fish cake was some weird spongy texture and was very oily - not sure what it was made with. I went for the seafood stirfry for mains which had mussels, unfortunately some of the shells were broken so I had to pick bits out. The squid and prawns were lovely although the sauce was a deep red palm oil consistency and very slippery and splashed on my jacket when I cut some of the squid. The rest of the meal I had to eat the big peices of squid whole for fear of getting more oil on myself. Also this dish is very spicy. My partner had the bbq chicken gai (hot plate dish) which was really tender and delicious. The restaurant was very noisy but then it was Saturday night. Huge table of girls squealing loudly so I had to shout for my partner to hear me across the small table. The service is good and this place is always a good backup but not spectacular.

If I pass entrance 3 times and pay 3 times separately I would get 3 tiny bags of crisps!!! How greedy you have to be !!!! How unprofessional answer to a customer???? They really DO NOT CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS but money !!!! AWFUL SERVICE . At the end I have received smelly old chicken pieces in my meal !!!! Never again ! What a disappointment !! For 1h I watched nearly every customer make a funny face when tasting each dish that has been presented to them! Most customers returned the food nearly untouched and the waitress didn't find this odd at all !! The food is extraordinary bland! At a price you would pay at bussaba for example where the food is superb! Probably won't come back again! I live in forest hill and most restaurants round here are making an extra effort to bring up the standard in this up and coming area! And I guess Thai orchard is not gonna survive the competition around if they stay oblivious about the quality of their dishes. They need to either change the chef or keep him but seriously retrain him but also use better ingredients. I'm usually very British when it comes to complaining and usually just nod and smile when asked how my meal was, but in this occasion I had to actually speak to the manager (nice woman btw)Will give it a last shot again one day. But not too soon!

Have lived in the area for the past 4 years and have eaten in & had take away at least 6-7 times.Best dishes by far are an authentic green papaya salad, tom yum, the other soup (coconut based), and the gaeng penang with beef. The red&green curries have definitely become a lot worse over the years - had take away tonight and the red curry was almost inedible. I think the food quality is better when you eat in. Service is nice and you'll always have a table.Dishes to avoid these days are red/green/jungle curry. Try the gaeng penang. Just awesome. My partner and I went here on Friday night, our romantic evening was spoilt by cold food and defo not value for money and I will not be going here again. We went for the set menu, don't do this mistake that we did. It really was not worth it, small portions and to me there was no flavour to the food and starters and mains were cold. After having our starters and mains, the waitress gave us the dessert menu and told us we could choose whatever we wanted, only to have another waiter come to us 5 min later to say they made a mistake and that ice cream and coffee was allowed. We both ordered ice cream and my partner coffee as well but then he was told that it was either coffee or ice cream not both! Then they did not have one sort of ice cream!!! we went to the Orchard after getting some excellent tickets for the "Hob" next door which is a brilliant comedy club but has terrible service and no food on offer. The greeting was polite and functional by a traditionally dressed Thai waitress. Fairly modern and inoffensive decor and thee were 3 other tables in the restaurant so the service was pretty quick which is what we were looking for. We ordered a mixed starter which consisted of a rib, which was cold, a chicken satay which was like rubber, a spring roll which was OK and an alleged fish cake which was a sliver of indistinguishable food that i assumed was the fish cake?Mains were Gaeng Pet Phed (Duck curry) and Stir fried mixed vegetable and coconut rice. I have to say that the main course was very good so the place could have potential. However when the bill came for these dishes plus 2 diet cokes was for £52 i was taken back. On checking the bill I saw a bottle of Gavi at £19.95? So I called the waitress over who began to argue then realised the bill was for the table behind us and quickly changed it to the correct one without an apology. shame as the main course proved that with a bit of work this place could move up to being average

We'd seen the reviews and figured this was a safe enough bet for a lazy Sunday dinner, especially as it's around the corner from us. Unfortunately, my Tofu & Veg Pad Thai was basically a plate of noodles in ketchup sauce with a few pieces of formerly frozen and now rotten-tasting veg. My boyfriend said his Beef Green Curry was just fine though. The only other thing to say is that the music - 90s soft listening and boy bands - was absolutely grating. Service was also nothing noteworthy. Overall, eeek.

I booked a meal with my wife for Valentines Day and it was a full house that night. We chose the Valentines Day value set menu and were very disappointed with the amounts of food served on the set menu for £23.95 per head that included starter, main and very limited choice of desserts. I know with Chinese food your always hungry again half hour after you finished eating, but I almost had a whole dinner when I got home after this. Tip, if the waiters lead you to a corner table on a busy night, object and get one nearer where the serving staff can see you - I had to prompt them 3 times that we were ready to order drinks and that we needed water as we were forgotten about. Three tables away from us, a lady was stating to the waitress how amazingly quick the service was, while my wife was trying to talk me out of popping to the pub next door for a glass of wine. We ordered crispy duck curry and prawns for our mains. The duck curry had little meat in the dish, and should be renamed it grisly duck curry. The Prawns had to be de-shelled - so annoying when they don't tell you they are whole prawns when you just want to eat and not perform a Krypton Factor intelligence test on how to eat them. That aside, the mixed starter was nice and so were the desserts, but the lack of air con in a full house made the atmosphere feel stuffy, clammy and uncomfortable and just like another number with no individual attention given to us. We will not make a return in hurry. If there is a set menu still post valentines day, strongly suggest you give it a miss and order from the main menu where you might have more luck. Oh and wear something fluorescent so you will be noticed, if you get forgotten in a dark corner.

Friendly and efficient service from the staff. Excellent and well spiced food - didn't suffer from the normal "making everything bland and tasteless for English people" that so many other asian places do. I would always ask for my dish to be spiced a certain way in any case, rather than just expecting it to to suit my palate. I asked for it hot and that's how it came. Not sure why other people have complained about portion size on here, there was more than enough (maybe my boyfriend and I are just not greedy) and I prefer quality over quantity.Am pleased this is one of our local restaurants as Forest Hill isn't the best place to eat out (Dulwich and Brixton much better) and this was good value for money.

We've eaten here a few times and had the occasional take away. The food has generally been fine but the place suffers from the same trend towards blandness that afflicts an increasing number of Thai restaurants in London. Maybe people don't want authentic Thai food. Maybe they are happy with overly sweet, milky curries, coconut rice, and pad Thai with everything. It's a shame though. With Forest Hill starting to develop into a fantastic place to live and eat out this place could be leading the way. Given a bit of redecoration, an improvement in service and some proper Thai flavour and this place could be amazing. At the moment there's no sign of an appetite for this though.

The thing about Thai food in London is that it has started to go the way Indian food has. Ubiquitous green curries, pad thai's etc - all tweaked for the Western palate. Then there are a couple of place where, if you know what to order, the food is actually really authentic. Or some of it is anyway. This is one of those places. The Gai Yang - which is basically Thai grilled chicken - is really good. Way better than Busaba. And plentiful too. The Pad Thai is tweaked for the western palate - too much cheaty ketchup. The Pad Si Ew is yummy. The best thing I had here was fish with curry - can't remember the name, but it was really authentic (I am Thai), and had all the bits that restaurants don't normally put it - the bitter egg plants etc. So I guess it is about knowing what to order - the stuff that looks like a cross over between Thai and Chinese food I'd stay away from. But I'd order some of the more authentic dishes on the menu (if you can handle it) - things like Yum Woon Sen etc are probably good here. Ask the staff - they are really nice!

I've been a loyal and regular customer at Thai Orchard for several years, but after my visit last week, I won't be going back again. I reserved a table for last Friday evening, in the middle of the heatwave, and specifically asked to sit at one of the two tables at the front of the restaurant where the large windows would be opened. I was assured this would not be a problem. We arrived on time, only to find our table was occupied. The manager seemed to have no idea that we had reserved a particular table and seemed fairly unconcerned. The restaurant was fairly busy, and the manager tried to persuade us to sit at a table that had been hastily put up in the takeaway area. When we declined this, he then tried to seat us outside by the main road, to breath in the fumes from the South Circular. We waited around 15 minutes for the table we had booked to become free. By this time it was just after 9 pm., and the restaurant gradually began to empty out. In the past the service at Thai Orchard has always been efficient, although one of the waitresses in particular has always been very curt and unfriendly, but on this occasion, it took an hour from our arrival before anyone took our order - including an order for drinks. When our food finally arrived, my friend's main course arrived a full 10 minutes before her side dishes, and was therefore cold by the time she ate it. My food was OK, but it really would have been more enjoyable if I had not been so thirsty after over an hour's wait. After three requests, our wine and water finally arrived half way through the meal. We were both very disappointed in the size of our portions, which were very small compared to the usual size served, and were fairly bland. Our table was eventually cleared about 30 minutes after we had finished eating. No-one offered a pudding and after another considerable wait, we finally managed to attract one of the waitresses who appeared to be completely ignoring our table and the only other table occupied at the front of the restaurant. By this time, the restaurant was almost empty. We ordered two coffees, having been told that the only puddings available were ice cream. The only thing that arrived quickly during our visit was the bill, which was brought almost as soon as the coffee had been served. This has been one of my favourite restaurants in the area for some time, but after this experience I won't be back. The service was atrocious - surly and inefficient - and the portion size has been reduced very significantly since our last visit last month. In future I will be going to Tamnag Thai at Crystal Palace, where the quality of the food is far superior, or the Thai Corner kitchen in East Dulwich, where service is delightful.

In spite of reserving a table and a very empty restaurant, the hostess grumbled and was quite intensive and rude from the start. Uncomfortable visit due to several interruptions during the meal, unhelpful at describing the menu and even more rude when served with bill. Title pretty much sums it up. We've come here a few times in the last year or two and the food has been consistently good from a standard-issue menu. Nicely spiced, excellent squeaky fishcakes, tick, fiery stirfries, tick, citrusy greencurry, tick etc. Could do with some more imagination in the menu and particularly in the wine list - which was short and dire. Stick with Singhas.

I've been eating at the Thai orchard on a regular basis for several years now, and the food is of a consistently good standard. The portions used to be very small a couple of years ago, but the size has now been increased significantly. The menu is varied, and the quality of the food is always high. The house wine is excellent. Service is usually very pleasant and cheerful, although there is one older woman who is extremely miserable and surly, and who unfortunately served us last night. The restaurant has a nice atomosphere and is very good value for money.

We thought we'd better give it a go since we live in Forest Hill and we were not disappointed. The food on the set menu we chose was lovely and the Saturday evening atmosphere was gently alive with other diners chatter. The service was unobtrusive and good. We'd definitely go back on another occasion.

I've been here a couple of times with my boyfriend and with friends. We have always got a table straight away and had friendly and attentive service. On my most recent visit we had the Weeping Tiger (chargrilled sirloin in a slightly spicy sauce - very nice) and a special of friend cod, which was really delicious. The wine was nice (a Shiraz) and for about £25 a head we had plenty of food, wine and really nice evening.

Excellent food, polite service. Loads of time to sit and eat and finish wine-never rushed. Good choice on menu. Relaxed atmosphere. Recommend the specials cod.

great little restaurant, we have been coming here since it opened 3-4 times a month and i honestly don't think we have ever been disappointed. the menu is fairly standard thai and the wine list is not long, though we seem always to have the gavi. i think the food, over the last year, has very gradually, but steadily improved, now when we take friends and relatives they are always impressed.

Having past this local restaurant many times I decided to have a meal here. I was not disappointed. My wife and I had a really pleasant evening. The food was good and the service friendly and efficient. We like to eat within walking distance of our home and support local business and are glad to add another restaurant to those we enjoy in the locality.

The only thing that was great was the sweet and sour, the Singapore rice was a quite flavourless and the chicken wings were unfortunately much the same

Although I got delicious Bengali rice-meal and desserts for lunch, the price was quite high. The desserts were particularly very expensive. There was a good crowd and I had to wait quite a few minutes to get a seat.

Used it several times and the food is always great and fresh. Staff is very helpful and after getting to know me all I needed is a call and they would even take over the phone payment.
