The George Inn in North Devon

We stayed here last night and the night before but, was ruined by the fire alarm going off at 5am . Tried to call reception but no answer. We made our way to the front of the building. Nobody at all was present, no staff at all ! After 15 minutes standing outside the George (5am) a car pulled up and a lady got out. I asked her why there was no one on site her reply was well we are not far away. Apparently we were the only residents in the building. I find this all very disturbing. All we got was "Sorry about that " JUDY BOSTOCK

My friends booked a table here for my 30th birthday. Everyone working that evening was so unbelievably kind and so much fun. They were kind enough to keep the kitchen open when we were running late and we had such a great time doing karaoke! The people behind the bar (so sorry, terrible with names) couldn’t have done any more for us, they absolutely made my night and couldn’t have wished for a more entertaining evening, we were so well looked after. Thank you for making my night and my birthday 🙂. Now I’m back in town, I can’t wait to pop back in for a drink and bring my family in for food. Thank you to everyone working that night, hope your ears have recovered from the questionable singing!

Stayed here while walking the south west coastal path. So the location was perfect. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The shower was hot and great. The room was just a little tired and you experience some noise from the pub below but you would expect this when staying above a pub. Next to the pub was a good supermarket to stock up on provisions for the next days walking.

After being let down by the Surma Tandori restaurant our group of seven had a delicious curry here. Generous portions and happy to spice them up too. Also a well kept real ale was on the cask pull. Thank you for a great evening.

Stayed last weekend had a lovely welcome from the young lady in the bar. Room was fine. Noisy but on a main road and expected. Linen was white and the bed very comfortable. Bathroom was tired bottom of shower tray was loose and mould on the ceiling. Breakfast was lovely with a great choice. Excellent service from the young lady. Overall a good choice but room/bathroon needing a bit of freshing up. Would stay again, good location.

We stayed at the George this weekend for one night and it was ok - not really good for sleeping. The rooms were clean and beds comfy, but it was really noisy - when booking, the page had no mention that there would be karaoke / live music until 11pm. Although I had requested a quiet room, ours was directly above the music, which was super loud and went on for ages, so we couldn't sleep. If the booking page had made this clear, we would have chosen somewhere else. The room was also quite hot, but with the windows open, not only could we hear the karaoke even louder, but also the pub guests smoking and talking outside (not to mention the smoke coming into the room). In the morning, the shutters did very little to keep the light out, so it was very bright, and lorries and other traffic from the road made noise from early in the morning. Although clean, the bathroom had a significant amount of mould in the shower seals and across the ceiling, as well around the window. It needs a good bleaching and would probably be ok. It had tea and coffee in the room and a hairdryer, which was helpful. Bedding and towels were nice quality and very clean. Good location for exploring the local area. EDIT: Have read the reply... Quite interesting that the management deny smoke could travel up through open windows?! Not really a great sign to have them respond and say our experience must have been wrong, rather than acknowledging it!

Stayed for 1 night because we had a wedding locally. Room was decent and comfortable. A shutter in the room was broken which was a shame and allowed light in at night. It was a very warm night so we had to sleep with the windows open anyway and the fan in the room was much needed. The pub is on a busy road and even though we tend to sleep with ear plugs, we got woken up by alarms going off over the road. We didn't eat here so can't comment on the food or service but there is a public carpark over the road which you're allowed to park at. I called up to check we could check in early prior to booking and the price quoted on the phone was cheaper than that I'd seen online. Overall, a decent stay for the amount paid.

We stayed here in July 2024 as attending a wedding just up the road. Nice building with really efficient and friendly staff! Service was great. We had a nice breakfast before departing too, again great service and food was lush! Rooms are nice, a few niggles but its an old building and we were quite happy :)

Unfortunately, had a really disappointing albeit limited experience. I'm not one to leave negative reviews but this one really frustrated me. We (group of 4) walked into the pub and the atmosphere was very unwelcoming, as if we had caused a problem by coming in. We sat ourselves at a table and grabbed a menu, to then be told in a very blunt (and slightly rude manner) that they weren't serving food for an hour until a large party arrived. This was extremely disappointing as we were all very hungry and it is well advertised that the pub serves food all day. This was worsened by the fact that someone else was served a plate of food just as we were leaving. A big let down, especially as we were really looking forward to some pub grub. Edit: I've seen the pub's response. This is not a troll, the pub was practically empty, and there is nothing online stating they don't take walk-ins. They have also unfortunately lied in the reply, and stated it was a 30 minutes wait (we were there at 6pm, and was told food wouldn't be served till 7pm). Informing us of the delay is in no way rude, however the manner and attitude of it was. Bit of an embarrassing reply to be honest.

Couldn’t fault the welcome here at The George! Room was clean with kettle and tea/coffee facilities plus bottle of fresh water. Shower was excellent too. The reason for the 3 stars was the need for sprucing everything up. The bathroom had a few fittings that needed attention and breakfast was punctuated by a slow drip into a container from the ceiling above- probably a shower leaking. Good breakfast with reasonable choice though and free parking across the road.

The staff were extremely welcoming and made up in part for the very tired room that we stayed in. Mould on the bathroom ceiling, water stains on the bedroom ceiling and wallpaper and a loo that wouldn’t flush were hardly compatible with the description of boutique hotel rooms. For £335 for a 3 night stay we had expected better but the towels and sheets were white and clean and breakfast was good. The owner needs to respond to plumbing issues and refurbishment asap.

I didn't get to visit this hotel. I brought a one night staycation, which I can not use for this hotel, unless it is between September and March. They do have the vacancy I needed, but were unwilling to accommodate us. I am posting this review to warn other people who are hoping to book this hotel with the one night staycation. The hotel is inflexible, even though you have paid more for the gift than the room is worth.

I was playing golf at Saunton golf club and stayed here for 2 nights - the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Lovely rooms , cleaned after the first night , lovely bathroom and comfortable bed Breakfast was included and was great Would fully recommend staying here 5 stars !

We stayed here for 1 night whilst house hunting in the area. We found it to be excellent value for money. Our room was a good size, clean and warm. The shower room was modern and spotlessly clean, with a great sized walk in shower with rainfall head. Breakfast was included and ordered from a menu. We had the full English which was freshly cooked to order. We also ate our evening meal here. Again, great value and we both really enjoyed our choices. The whole pub is dog friendly which suited our needs perfectly. They charge £10 for dogs per night, but not per dog. More great value, as we have seen places that charge £25 per dog per night!! Last but definitely not least … the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We would definitely stay here again.

Stayed a night here recently, had a really great time. Lovely rooms, friendly and attentive staff, and a great breakfast to top it off! Cheers guys, we'll be back!

The manager Chris and his team are great hosts when I checked in I was given lots of information regarding the area. It is a lovely location, car park is just across the road after SQ and the bus stop but the staff are happy to direct you if you get a little lost. Stayed for 1 night with breakfast included. The room was comfortable, warm and clean, facilities topped up and ready to use and bathroom perfect shower hot and spacious, towel warmer radiator on. I slept comfortably I realised half way through the night I didn’t shut the shutters properly and had let some cold in so readjusted and went straight back to sleep. This establishment is nearly 100 years old, and has kept some of the character which I loved there is a separate area for hotel guests to hang out and play pool to the bar and restaurant area. I checked out before the time because I wanted to check out the breakfast before my long drive home and it did not disappoint. Everything was hot and cooked to perfection I would say they do a banging breakfast, I was lucky to have the place to myself but very quickly it started to fill and by time I left it was buzzing. Thanks Chris really enjoyed my stay will definitely be back in the future. Sorry didn’t get picture of room I had thrown my stuff everywhere so pictures wouldn’t do it justice they have high ceilings to which made the room feel bigger.

Just popped in for a quick pint and a bite to eat I had pulled pork burger my wife had fish ginger sandwich both were very good. Good range of beers and ciders. We didnt stay there so cant comment on rooms.

Lovely stay here. Well looked after. Food was amazing, warning..... portions are large, but fresh and tasty. Free carpark opposite. Stayed in 'Croyde' room.

If you're checking out N Devons top Beaches this place is well worth a visit. We've just come back from 2 nights camping on the outskirts of Braunton and spent Friday night in The George listening to live music, then returned on Saturday night and joined in with the karaoke!!! Great fun, great atmosphere, great Bar! 👍

This place was rockin' to a heavy metal band when we arrived on a Friday evening and didn't stop until somewhere around midnight! An inauspicious start to our weekend stay !! Fortunately the rest of the weekend was a bit tamer. Genuine old style pub ambiance complete with 'sticky' carpets. Some renovations had been done and the first glance appearance of the rooms was pleasant. Some aspects, particularly the bathrooms were dated. Breakfast was not a standout moment ranging from 'quite ordinary' to 'avoid the smashed avo' which appeared to have been defrosted? Location was great in the centre of town and the staff pleasant & helpful.

Very comfortable room/bathroom. Hotel is on the main high street so was quite noisy. The owner made us very welcome and we ate in the pub (free desserts on Friday). The portions were huge and the food was delicious. Live music in the bar on Friday evenings which finished at 11pm. Breakfast was fantastic with a great choice of selections.

Friendly, Helpful and a Brilliant Breakfast in the morning. I reccomend any local and tourist to come here for Breakfast. Its fantastic 👌🏻 Rooms are clean, well presented and beds are comfortable. A well lit, gem of a Bar only 5-10mins from Barnstaple.

Great location in the centre of town and the interior was nicely decorated. However, the bartender who served me seemed utterly miserable. I know most of us don't want to have to be at work but you could really tell with this person. I had a Guinness and it was one of the worst I've had unfortunately. It was completely lifeless, which it could be that it was sitting in the pipes for a while, had a funny taste and was slightly warm

Nein, ich kann diese Unterkunft nicht empfehlen. Schon im Treppenhaus stinkt es nach Urin. Der erste Eindruck bestätigt sich im Zimmer. Überall Schimmel. Großflächig in der Zimmerecke, Fensterrahmen und Armaturen schimmeln ebenfalls. Nach der Beschwerde habe ich 50£ erstattet bekommen. Bezweifle ernsthaft, dass hier ordentlich geputzt und gelüftet wird. Wahrscheinlich wird der Schimmel nur übermalt für den nächsten Gast.

We have really enjoyed our stay at the George Inn, all the staff were really polite and kind making us feel extremely welcome. Our room was really nice, tidy and had a nice view of the town. We had an evening meal and breakfast during our stay and it was lovely, Thank you! We will definitely be staying again.

Me and my partner stayed for 2 nights we stayed in room crow point. Room was perfect clean and tidy staff were amazing really great atmosphere as soon as you walk in and food was very enjoyable highly recommend the hot chicken wings 👌 we will definitely be back

We only pop in now again for food on a lunch. Always good food. We were six of us on Saturday 18th Feb 23. We were looked after well and the food was brilliant. Worth a visit.

We have just returned from a weekend break at The George and would highly recommend it. Our room was very comfortable, meals excellent with the food all freshly cooked and staff very friendly and helpful.

The food was really not great 😕.... My friend said that he felt like it had come out of a container which it'd been in for days....then microwaved. My cheese and chips, well the ones at the top were fine I guess but I had to leave the bottom half...grease. Tables were sticky 😬 disgusting Sitting near the window, feeling the draft too 🥴. Just couldn't be bothered to say anything, we left and had a lovely meal out the next day, elsewhere 😋

Great place to stop for a drink while waiting for a bus from braunton to ilfrscombe. A good option for lunch ad well. With the rum bar, and the london Inn just around the corner. Plus SQ directly opposite. the centre of braunton is makes for a great miniture bar crawl.

We stayed for 3 nights whilst attending a wedding locally. We found the room to be comfortable and clean with all facilities available. The breakfast was absolutely delicious on each morning and set us up well for the day. We would not hesitate to stay if we are in the area again, especially being very dog friendly.

We popped in for breakfast on Saturday morning.. a bit quiet, but a lovely lovely couple running It.. Great attentive service, but the best full English I think I've ever had.. Fabulous sausage, really fresh eggs, locally sourced.. it was superb, and very reasonable too.. Definitely recommended.. Thank you..

Breakfast was brilliant, top job to the young lady that served us this morning, she did everything she could to make sure we had everything we needed, she needs a pay rise 👍, then we randomly ended up there for dinner tonight, lads behind the bar ok, and good service but both burgers were a bit tough and burnt 😢

We ate here on 3 occasions during our holiday. Found it by googling gluten free and dog friendly pub. The food is fantastic, as I can't eat wheat, I normally end up settling for something, not here..very good quality American style food. Lovely, friendly staff. First class, I highly recommend this place.

We had the warmest of welcomes on each of the 3 occasions we visited this wonderful pub within one week this August 2022. As a party of 7 plus 2 dogs we called in without reservation each time and enjoyed top choices of ales & gin or coffee and tasty home cooked meals and snacks from cheesy chips to fish pizza and a full English breakfast & veggie breakfast. The food was brilliant & the service every time was outstanding. So fantastic to have such good old fashioned customer service where nothing was too much trouble from Paul the barman or Roy's lovely wife, (I'm sorry I didn't get your name !). The service for us is the most important aspect of eating out and here it was unusually faultless! We would happily stay in Braunton again safe in the knowledge that us AND our dogs would be very well looked after and receive a very warm welcome. Thank you to all the staff!

We (4 adults, 3 kids) had a superb breakfast here. Food was great, service friendly and attentive and a really nice place.

Only grabbed a quick drink here, so possibly different rating had I got food there. Friendly service, ok selection of drinks. Good for small groups and good pool table.

Absolutely disgusting room. Heavily stained carpet, broken floor tiles, black mold in shower, filthy extractor. The owners know the problems and simply make excuses about not being able to get trades in to fix all the problems - well how about stop taking peoples money and don’t let out rooms that are akin to hostel accommodation for a much higher price. Standards here are very low. Needs an overhaul and a blooming good deep clean !! The restaurant had large cobwebs on the curtains, filthy windows and peeling paint on the walls. Book somewhere else as you will be disappointed and they won’t give you your money back once you see the state of the crows nest !! Note to the owners - I have photos of everything I have mentioned so it cannot be disputed. I will be in contact directly with a further complaint about the dangerous cracked floor tiles in the bathroom around other things.

We visited here whilst on holiday in the area. When we first arrived at 6pm it was dead except for two tables of people facing us as we walked in. We weren't sure when we sat down whether to stay as the atmosphere was a bit odd. However, being four veggies (+ a dog), I had scoured the menus of every pub in the area and I knew this one had the best range of options for us. We decided to stay and were SO glad we did. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. It was the best meal we had during our stay and would've gone back had it not been our last night out whilst there. Once we'd ordered a few more tables arrived for food and it felt so different to when we walked in. Definitely worth a visit if you want good quality pub food with lots of veggie options.

Stayed here over Christmas and had a lovely time. The staff were more than accommodating and actually kept a staff member on to check us in when our car broke down and meant we arrived late. They made us feel at home and were very dog friendly. We saw other reviews mentioning the young crowd that visit however we saw them deal with them robustly and make it a nice experience for everyone. Food was absolutely delicious! Room was nice, comfortable bed. If you went over it with a fine tooth comb you’d find dust on top of door frames and some marks on the wall but it didn’t matter at all to us. Great place to stay, very comfortable bed and we will definitely be back

The room was clean and the bed was especially comfortable. Roy, Chris and the staff were all very kind and accommodating. Good selection of beers and absolutely delicious food, my steak was delicious. Dog friendly throughout (pub and accommodation). The prices were also very reasonable. 5 stars - will return!

Stayed overnight -room was just what we wanted. Reasonable and slightly different from normal pub food. Excellent pint of Yard Ale - Greene King's best real ale - don't know why more pubs don't sell it.

Visited here whilst holidaying in croyde in September! Just rang 5 minutes before to check if they were still serving food and they Was. Lovely dining room and a lovely friendly pub with a very attentive owner. We all ordered and it was some of the best Mexican food 😋 they even managed to cater for the fussy eaters of the group by amending the menu to suit their taste. We would definitely visit again should we be in the area!

Stayed here for 4 nights while in town for a wedding. Really great staff , all were very friendly and helpful. Nice breakfast menu that was included with the room. Decent food and reasonable prices in the pub for dinner. The room was clean and comfortable, only minor issue was some cracked and chipped tiles on the bathroom floor. Certainly not a big deal, just not great to step on them with bare feet! Location is good, with other bars/restaurants nearby as well, a supermarket next door, and parking is included just across the road. I recommend The George Inn to anyone looking to stay in the area and would certainly stay again myself if visiting Braunton.

Just called in on the off chance for a breakfast. Cooked very well and quickly at a reasonable price. The furniture looked tried and dirty, the tables were very sticky. Could do with a refurbishment.

Decent pub grub, grill and burgers etc, kids menu good. Staff welcoming and service was quick, efficient and friendly. Pool table and looks good for a few pints in bar, accommodation too. Well run establishment in our opinion.

Awful place, awful manager that can't cook and can't take critism.... Staff rude except one younger girl. Damp in dining room, windows boarded up....chef clearly spends most of the time eating food rather than cooking it. AVOID AVOID AVOID. **edit the chef was eating food in kitchen rather than cooking it when we complained.... I wouldn't even notice his weight and certainly wouldn't comment on someone's weight.... Again just another way of them getting out of poor customer service....waste of time.

Absolutely disgusting place, windows boarded up, damp in corners of restaurant, not very helpful staff, over an hour and a half wait for food, then the steak was like a piece of shoe leather, didn't eat any of the food, we paid for our drinks then left, a definite AVOID at all cost, we should have read the reviews before stepping inside the place, I expect the manager will reply to this review saying its all lies, that's the usual trend to the other reviews!!! Book into the William Arms down the road, amazing place, or even the chip shop a few doors away from this shocking place, AVIOD AVOID AVOID!!!!

Have eaten here twice this week and would recommend the food. The service is very good and friendly.

Very centrally located. Room was nice but visibly dirty, with heavily soiled carpet and stained walls. Shower needed deliming. Breakfast was delicious but only cooked breakfasts were available, there was no buffet. For the price it wasn't great value.

It's been two years since we last had the pleasure of eating at The George Inn, and I'm glad to say the food and service is as good as we remember. Dog friendly, amazing size portions, great value for money and really great flavoursome food. Great offers like free desert on a Friday. We'll be back next time we're down no fear 😊
