We had a fab time during the weekend in the The Exchange Bar & Kitchen in Aberdeen City centre and we have tried their famous Lamprais. Sri Lankan Lamprais originated with the Dutch Burgher population in the 17th century (an ethnic group of mixed Dutch, Portuguese Burghers and Sri Lankan descent came up with the dish). The Exchange is a pub & restaurant in the Exchange Street, Aberdeen City. As soon as we enter the pub, we had a warm welcome from the friendly staff! The venue suits for Birthday parties, Office parties /meetings and family get togethers. Inside a very nice and vibrant atmosphere and ideal for any kind of professional / casual or formal event. The friendly management team is there to cater you as per your requirements. **The Exchange’s Lamprais: A Luxurious Journey of Sri Lankan Gastronomy** Nestled within the refined interiors of *The Exchange*, a culinary sanctuary known for weaving tradition with modern luxury, the Lamprais emerges as a crown jewel—a masterfully crafted ode to Sri Lanka’s rich culinary heritage in Scotland. From the moment this iconic dish arrives at the table, it commands attention. Lovingly wrapped in a perfectly charred banana leaf, the unmistakable aroma of exotic spices, slow-cooked meats, and caramelized onions wafts through the air, instantly transporting you to the bustling streets and lush landscapes of the island nation of Ceylon. The presentation is striking in its simplicity yet teeming with a sense of artistry, as the gentle unwrapping of the leaf reveals a treasure trove of flavors inside. **The Rice:** At the heart of the Lamprais lies a delicately steamed mound of rice, each grain separate yet perfectly soft. Infused with aromatic pandan, cardamom, and a subtle hint of cloves, the rice itself is a textural masterpiece—light and fragrant, a perfect canvas for the rich symphony of accompaniments that surround it. **The Meat:** *The Exchange* elevates the traditional meat selection to an exquisite level. The slow-braised lamb / mutton, marinated in a complex blend of Ceylon spices, melts effortlessly on the tongue. Each bite delivers layers of flavor—smoky, slightly sweet, with a gentle heat that lingers. The addition of tender chicken and the subtle gaminess of beef enrich the experience, providing a robust medley of textures and tastes, each meat imbued with its own spice-laden marinade. **The Curry Flavors:** The curries here are nothing short of revelatory. The rich, deep-fried Tuna Fish cutlet and Prawn / Shrimp belacan or blachan are made from the freshest catch of the sea. Chicken and meat curry, simmered slowly in a concoction of tamarind, coconut milk, and roasted spices until the meat is tender and the sauce clings delicately to every morsel. The devilled Brinjol Moju (Aubergine), served alongside, offer a sharp, tangy contrast, their filling vibrant with chili and mustard seed, perfectly offsetting the richness of the dish. **The Sides:** Accompanying the Lamprais are a selection of sides that add depth and texture to the meal. A traditional ash plantain / Cashew curry provides an acidic burst, cutting through the spice with its sharp, tangy notes. Meanwhile, the caramelized onions (Seeni Sambol), slow-cooked until golden and almost jam-like, bring a deep sweetness to balance the plate. **Service & Atmosphere:** The Exchange provides an experience as opulent as the dish itself. The attentive waitstaff exude grace and knowledge, guiding you through the cultural significance of the Lamprais with reverence. The chic, yet understated atmosphere—accented with lush greenery and dark wood tones—creates the perfect ambiance to savor such a deeply rooted, intricate dish. The Exchange’s rendition of Lamprais is not merely a meal—it’s an immersion into the vibrant history of the Island nation, an invitation to savor the artistry of Sri Lankan cuisine at its highest level. For those seeking a gourmet exploration that balances tradition with luxury, this dish is an absolute must-try. Here, Lamprais is more than a dish; it’s a story told through spices, flavors, and a meticulous dedication to authenticity.

We came here on a quiet Monday night, but realising that it was 'Restaurant Week'. Instead of the normal menu, it was a very short menu of Sri Lankan food. So glad it was! Absolutely delicious. One of the best curries I've had in a long while. Loved the stringhoppers, which I've never had before. A very pleasant surprise!

The place was very quiet when we went there, but the way it looks is nice. The tables are slightly low to be able to place your legs under some of them. The food was nice but I do wish for portions to be larger or have more of actual product rather than vegetables. Not many options for cider, only two. The customer service was good, and food was made relatively quickly. The cleanliness of items could be improved on as the cups had dirt on them which is not nice.

I do not typically write negative reviews as everyone can have an off day and I never want to see a small business suffer. However, on this occasion and because this notes that cruise ship visitors are welcomed, I think it's necessary to advise this is not the standard of Aberdeen cuisine. We visited before an evening at the Tivoli, location was great, nice and close so not too long a walk on a cold, wet July evening. The only thing worse than the weather was the food we were served. We were optimistic when ordering, we were advised it would take approx 40 mins due to the meals chosen, we were the only people dining so assumed it was due to freshly made food and not because they were busy. Sadly that was not the case and I'm pretty sure the timing was to allow for defrosting as the food was certainly not fresh. One of our group returned their meal having barely touched it. The rest of us picked at ours and left the majority of it on our plates. Vegetables were clearly frozen and I'm guessing microwaved, certainly not the texture of a nice fresh stir fried vegetable which is what was on the menu. The lamb chops were so dry and tough that I'm not sure it was possible to identify the type of meat. The beef sizzle plate was the one returned inedible, the knife was not able to cut through it so I dread to think how much chewing would have been involved to actually swallow it. The chicken goujons were so dry, they definitely were not freshly made, texture and flavour were terrible. We were offered a replacement dish for the returned one but based on the food the rest of us had on our plates, the offer was rejected. We all felt bad for the bartender/server as it was not his fault, the apologies were endless but the food was terrible. If all you want is a drink then go in and admire the lovely old building, I'd suggest sticking to something simple for your drink selection though as there was no knowledge of what was on offer or how it should be served. If this is a new venture, please invest in some good staff, with the location of the bar, it should be packed every day of the week so to find it empty on a Saturday evening should have been the first giveaway that we should not have eaten there. There's great opportunity for the building but not based on the food we were provided.

In a crowded market dominated by chains, fast food and franchises it's always encouraging to see a small, local business establishing itself. So it is with The Exchange which has been reopened by a Sri Lankan family wanting to share a taste of their home. We had a pleasant visit earlier in the week but came away with mixed feelings. Service, both before and after ordering, was very slow. One poor guy had to take orders, serve food and drinks and clear tables. He was overwhelmed and not helped by serving over two floors which he was dashing madly between. As the place wasn't busy it might have been better to close the upstairs. It would improve service and atmosphere. When it came, food was a mixed bag with a common theme that it wasn't warm enough. Pre-warmed plates might have helped. Sri Lanka produces all sorts of wonderful chutneys so it was a disappointment that the tuna cutlets came with ketchup. We also suspect the tuna was tinned. Main courses of Pork Curry and Sri Lankan Chicken were quite tasty but the meat had been pre-cooked and wasn't too tender. Portions were small and even with a side of String Hoppers or Pol Roti left us feeling peckish and questioning value for money. Chicken Kottu was thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were very pleasant and with a bit of attention to detail this could be a very useful addition to the Aberdeen food scene. We'll give it another try and see if it has developed.

After many reviews we decided to give this a try. We were underwhelmed by the overall atmosphere and food. It took 2 hours to eat dinner as the wait time was very long for basic dishes. The portions were extremely small and the curry was not like anything I’ve seen. The chicken curry came out in a tiny dish with nothing else and very dry. No curry sauce/ seasoning at all. I would not recommend this place.

Had the develled chicken at the Taste of Grampian which cost me £8 and I received the tiniest portion I’ve ever seen. I should of complained there and then but I think I was too gobsmacked, they also said that I couldn’t have any chips with it even though the chips were cooking and I had to wait for my meal for 5 minutes anyways. The chicken was extremely dry and not much flavour in the veg. I also received a loyalty card with a stamp on it but I won’t be going back.

The women who was working was very friendly and very passionate about their food…Went for the Chicken Kottu, a Sri Lakan street food dish, it was amazing.. The small portion of curry sauce with it was delish, and could have ate a full bowl the wife had a fresh made curry pie which was again superb...Overall I would say a very underrated place and well worth a visit to taste something different.. We are already planning to come back in 2 weeks to try something else…👍🏻👍🏻

A gem of a place hidden in plain site My wife took me for a birthday meal in The ExchangeBar & Kitchen last Wednesday. The menu includes Sri Lankan fare in addition to the previous more traditional menu. The Sri Lankan food really was tremendous (made a lovely change from Indian or Thai). The service was great and we even got a free Sri Lankan sweet for my birthday. Good selection of drinks available to suit all tastes. We’d recommend anyone to give this a go – the staff are working so hard and deserve to succeed. Ads an added bonus the building it is in is well worth a look – stunning historical interior. It is so central but at the same time not in plain sight – Just off Guild Street a short way up. We understand it is one of only three Sri Lankan food based restaurants in Scotland (I guess it is a case of use them or lose them) We’ll be back!

Gone there with the family for lunch. We went following a social media recommendation for the "shovel" and we could have not been more disappointed. We ordered both shovels, the seafood and the mixed meats. The quantity seemed reasonable for two people, but the quality was far of being great. Both shovels came lukewarm and cooled down very quick. I tried the meat shovel and it was nothing to write home abut. Most of the pieces I tried were chewy and cold. My kids said the meatballs and sausages were OK. The feedback from those who tried the seafood was that it didn't taste very fresh. I may be back, but definitely to try different dishes. The service was OK, with the staff very polite and the place looks great.

It took absolutely ages for JE to find a delivery person, about 45 mins, I think that is why the chips wasn't very warm, the restaurant started cooking the food before they arrived. When my partners wings arrived i had finished my meal. I understand hospitality is a hard industry and mistakes happen, but there are better ways to go about things, and considering we were the only people in the place eating we didn’t think it would be that much or a stress. Buen local para disfrutar de buena música y provar su variada carta de cervezas y sidras de tirador. También sirven platos para comer y picar. Muy buen servicio del personal.

Staff were friendly, great selection of drinks, decently priced and cosy setting. Good for a quiet night out during the week, would highly recommend, been there several times now and enjoyed it each time.

Reasonable selection of beers, not quite the selection of some of its neighbours. Staff are friendly, menu has something for most, including vegetarians and vegans. Pleasant surroundings and a discount with your Brewdog EFP card 👍

I was in on Friday night for a Christmas meal. Great service and atmosphere, the staff really couldn't have did anything else to help us. However, I felt the food was pretty mediocre, and the brownie for pudding was slightly burnt. Would still recommend a trip and will likely be back for a sunday lunch in the future.

Not the best place with limited space upstairs and downstairs and very expensive for a drink. Then after the 3rd drink at the bar they said we had had too much too drink, sat in a corner, no bothering ourselves or anyone. We had been out for a meal on our xmas do. We even give them a tip before they would not serve us. Ok if you were a student dressed in anything you wanted though, but no good if you are smartly dreesed.

Best pizza I've ever had. They do great pizza every single time. No change in quality or taste and always on time delivery. I'd highly recommend them over any big brands. They also take party orders. Their Nutella pizza is also worth trying if you are into weird stuff 😉

Great food, tried this after always having the one in St Andrews and while there are many differences especially with the square shape compared to the circle in St Andrews it is still good and tastes great. I definitely recommend for a delicious meal that’s super filling
