The Chequers Inn in Newark and Sherwood

The place has a lovely atmosphere with beautiful décor. I had the Sunday roast and opted for the beef, which was tender, juicy, and delicious. They also offer lamb, chicken, pork, and a vegetarian option. The vegetables were excellent – I especially loved the spring onions! The service was great, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout. For dessert, I tried the sticky toffee pudding, which was incredibly soft and tasty, and the lemon tart, which was the perfect finish.

Fab lunch here today, the steak and ale pie was stunning, very tasty ! Beautiful pub, lovely staff. Will definitely return.

I went to the Chequers Inn for the first time this past week. And it was so good, I went again the very next night! I am a vegan. The Inn caters for everyone and had excellent options for me that my two non-vegan companions found to challenge their views about vegan food! I had the apple and parsnip soup on both nights. It was extraordinary. On the first night, I had the Durban Butter Bean Curry. It was as good as any curry I have had in the restaurants of New York or London. In fact, it was better. My non-vegan companions were most impressed as well. On the second night, I had the nut roast. It, too, was excellent. The atmosphere is terrific. It is a village pub. But it is a village pub with food that could easily be rated highly in a major city. The chef, Robert, is extremely talented and goes out of his way to please every palate. A fellow named George is the primary server and he could not be more friendly and attentive. The prices are extremely reasonable particularly given the high quality of the food. The owner, Graham, is a very warm and welcoming host. All in all, I feel that five stars does not do this most excellent place justice.

Fabulous Sunday lunch, nice wine & excellent service. Thank you, will come again. PS -Watching some of the customers come in with elderly relatives, I was very impressed with the staff, discreetly on hand to help if needed, moving seats around to accomodate the less mobile. Also adjusting the plating of meals to suit the customer, little things that mean a lot & enhance the family dining experience.

Had a superb meal on Friday, Sept 26 th. The pork belly was absolutely delicious, the crackling perfect. My husband had the fish and chips, also excellent. Our companion had the braised lamb shoulder, and said it was very, very good. Sticky toffee pudding, home made, wonderful! Definitely worth a visit. We live in France, it’s so lovely to have really good English pub food for a change.

Just had Sunday dinner here and it's by far the best I've had in a long time. The food was amazing. Service was great and the pub itself is very clean and decor is nice. Puddings were very good as well. I'd definitely recommend this place. Also has a pool table and darts board.

Lovely setting and pub but the function room setting for the meal was really disappointing. No charm and character. Food was ok. Went down to the bar for drinks after which was lovely and good atmosphere. Staff very polite.

This is a little gem. If you're just visiting the area (likely for the Spa), then this is the place you need to eat. Such an unassuming little pub but the food felt special and the atmosphere was so warm and inviting.

Saturday afternoon; football in the Sports Bar, the Patio is busy as folk enjoy the sun and the kitchen is busy. We had steak & ale pie and fish & chips, both delicious. Lovely white wine too, ask for Sand Boy. Thank you Team Chequers.

Amazing lunch, home steak pie with handcut chips . The braised beef with silton on homemade focaccia ..... delicious . Great service from all the staff .

Just called in on off chance for Sunday lunch and welcomed very warmly and shown to a table, The Sunday lunch we ordered was to die for we will definitely be back.

Excellent lunch today! Great portions and quality was brilliant. Sausages come from a local Newark butcher so it’s defo British pork, gravy was lplentoful and much appreciated and the quality of mash and peas were great! I had the beef, bacon and cheeseburger. Meat was thick and amazing; decent amount of salad in it. Bun was great and portion of chips was good. Mum enjoyed her chicken burger too. Although slightly expensive, sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream was delicious and a good size - tasted homemade. Atmosphere was good and service was great - just a bit slow.

My husband booked a table on line. My first thoughts were very impressive. We were taken upstairs in the function room, it was big but very cold. No atmosphere. I thought it would be in the actual pub downstairs, which I would of preferred. Waiting 30 mins for a roast dinner. When the food came, it looked lovely, however the beef was very chewy, ( fatty) had to leave it. Would of been better with a Sharpe knife, not that it would of made a huge difference. I used to go to this pub years ago, actually preferred it. Sadly won't be returning.

Graham and the team are always so friendly and kindly got me in at last minute with a large party. Lovely food and a great asset to the local area

Hope to pop in for a bite to eat on the hoof but sadly we couldnt be squeeze in. Clearly a very popular spot so book in advance. Nonetheless had a couple of drinks and the owner was very welcoming and the locals chatty. Nice decor and atmosphere. Looking forward to eating there soon

First time visiting this amazing place today for some lunch. We were on the way to Nottingham and chose Chequers as the reviews I had read suggested they are very welcoming to dogs which is a big thing for us, and they really were 😊🐾 The staff were lovely and the food was so good I can’t wait to go back again 😍 everything about this place is great! Thank you 🙃

Went on a Saturday, around 6pm, no booking. Waiter very helpful & pleasant, he found us a table. Quite noisy. Menu very restricted for a vegetarian, who doesn't eat fish either. Option was veggie burger, which frankly, I'm so bored with. Please think of something else! We were visitors in the area, for one night, so very disappointing. My husband ordered a sirloin steak, which they hadn't got. So, he had the ribeye, which was very fatty , rare instead of medium rare, so, He wasn't impressed either & was disappointed too. The sticky toffee pudding was very light, a good sized portion, with cream but extremely sweet. Perhaps others will have more luck.

We booked a buffet for a family event (25 people) and everyone was very impressed with the surroundings, the food , and the service. Graham, George and the team did a fantastic job accommodating all members of our party from 14yrs to 97yrs and everyone in between. The more local ones of us will definitely back .

Would Highly Recommend The Chequers inn Elston ,Sunday lunch was fantastic. Excellent Service all round ,plenty of car park space ,but we walked there and also they allowed our Dog inside too. Been in Saturday 5pm fantastic meal we had, tried the beef burger & chips not the normal meal I would have ,but was Excellent. Great atmosphere there ,we normally go for Sunday lunch. Thank you .also they allowed our Dog inside as well.

Absolutely brilliant gourmet burgers tonight (one lamb, one chicken) - with perfect chips and excellent salad - wine reasonable price, and great service. The (friendly) locals seem to be keeping this place to themselves - but it is definitely worth a drive out to, from Newark and beyond!

Super recently refurbished pub for a pint or two, it has a couple of cask ales on tap and a wide variety of others too. Good for a bite to eat as well.

The person we spoke to by phone was really accommodating, especially for a last-minute arrival for dinner. Slightly food expensive but overall good experience and nice venue.

Recently had a familly dinner over Christmas. Everybody had an enjoyable Restaurant was beautifuly decorated including the tables. We had steaks and rizoto and all of it was very tasty,with no waiting time at all. The waitress was very atentive so was the owner Who was also very pleasant and friendly to talk to. We Will be definitely returning.

4 of us went for a birthday meal. The pub has clearly had a lot of money spent on a refurb. We ate in an area to the side of the bar. Apparently there's a large dining room upstairs but that was set up for a function the next day. However I had previously been told that the upstairs dining room is large & unless a lot of people are dining, it lacks atmosphere. So we were happy to sit where we were. Food was good, though not cheap. Friendly landlord & the locals sitting in the TV area near the bar, watching the Tyson Fury fight, were welcoming so we stayed on for another drink & watch the rest of the fight

Went to The Chequers last night for my birthday meal. The menu was varied and it was difficult to choose my main as everything sounded so good. In the end I went with the chef recommended haddock . I wouldn't usually choose fish when eating out but I'm glad I did as it was delicious. The food was served promptly and the staff were friendly and helpful without being overbearing. Well done , ten out of ten !

Food is excellent, especially the Sunday lunch.. Nice choice of beers and a very friendly atmosphere.. separate TV area which shows sky sports. And quiz night on a Wednesday..

Went tonight for the first time since refurbishment. Good food, good ambience. All round good experience. Fully recommend. At last somewhere in the vicinity we would be happy to back to again - something sadly rarely to be stated post pandemic times at present

Absolutely delicious food that I can't rave on about enough.(More veggie options though please.) We didn't have to wait long to be served by staff who were courteous & friendly. The Inn itself -what I saw- has been done up beautifully & has a good atmosphere. All the best to you guys who own it & work there.

Brilliant pub and staff excellent food

Stumbled upon this completely renovated village pub restaurant just off the A46. The incredible menu, clean decorations and enthusiastic staff impressed us so much we would recommend it to every one!

Excellent quality and good service

More than impressed! We were passing by in need of somewhere to eat. Really tasty kids vegan option but could do with more through out. Dog friendly and even water provided and dog treats given! Decor beautiful and toilets spotless. Staff fantastic and on the ball! Highly recommend!!

The Chequers Inn has just reopened under new management, May 2021. What a transformation. Good selection of beers, great wines and fab food. We will be back.
