I haven’t visited this restaurant for a while so we were looking forward to the usual standards of food and service that we had previously experienced. Starters were great and tasty however the main dishes that we ordered were tasteless and very greasy . I ordered a chicken korai it looked pleasant enough but it did kit have any taste to it at all ! My partner ordered a rogan Josh again there was no taste to it , as medium spice dish you expect a kick but both wee bland . I was offered a replacement dish . I chose a chicken tikka mossala and the sauce tasted like tomato soup . The service was slow and there was no apology for the tasteless food . I will not be visiting this restaurant again , there was no reduction in the bill offered for the poor quality of food which again is not good customer service .

This has to be the worst Indian restaurant I have been to!!!! I have NEVER been to an Indian restaurant before where they serve frozen oven chips. Even takeaway shops make the effort to make fresh chips. The curry was bland and watery, the chicken was tough and rubbery the rice was bland, and the chips was absolutely dreadful hence me leaving the food, paying the bill and leaving, absolute waste of £70. Only positive I can say was the Cobra beer was nice. I would not return to this restaurant even if it was for free!

My good friends and I attended the Capital on Friday 9th February for our joint birthday party. This was despite our short notice, but the staff were incredibly accommodating for our needs! 🙂 We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who brought over plenty of popperdoms for us all. We tucked into our onion bhajis and our curry’s arrived not long after. This was washed down with a couple pints of Cobra. A lovely drop! We had so much fun that we even forgot to play pass the parcel

When we arrived the table wasn’t even ready even though it was booked. The staff were miserable didn’t appear to want to be there. We ordered poppadoms and pickles to start but they came with the starters which were consequently cold when we were ready to eat them. We had to ask for side plates then spoons to serve our food. The onion bajees were stale like they had been cooked yesterday and warmed up. The chicken tikka masala tasted ok but the naan bread was also stale and very hard. I’ve had much better food and I wouldn’t hurry back. As we opened the door to leave the smell of smoke was awful as 2 staff members were smoking just outside the door inside the covered area. It was disgusting. I can’t recommend this place.

We have been going to Capital for 20+ years and we all have to say this was the worst meal we have ever had from start to finish, clearly a change of management and the chef has a detrimental effect on the quality and taste of the food and service, everything was different from the onion bhaji to the mains to the nan breads. Staff didn’t even bother to check if the meals were ok, we ordered 4 different mains and other than the madras that was hot but tasteless the other 3 meals were exactly the same colour and taste other than one slightly sweeter as it had banana and pineapple in bland and tasteless!!! This has always been our favourite Indian we will not be retuning a total waste of money, we will be looking for a new Indian going forward.

Everyone raves about this place. We just found it to be very average. Very busy, food came quickly. It wasn't a relaxing experience. I have had better takeaways if I'm honest. Not that tasty and tables crammed in. Just too noisy and far too expensive. Will try elsewhere next time we visit Durham

Food was good but being encouraged to speed up our meal to obviously free up the table was a downer. Two of our business party had finished but one was still eating ,the waiter every few minutes asking to clear the dishes away. In the end the person still eating just left his meal. Unless you are fast eaters ,it may not be for you.

The food was nice however there are several things which let them down: Rice is overpriced - £6.50 for one small portion One of the waiters was misogynistic and would only address the one man in our party, the women might as well not have been there I had to ask 3 times for some water for the table The wine was expensive for a mediocre bottle (almost £30) So overall not worth the money

Warm friendly welcome looked busy and had been recommended. Pickles an starters were ok but my husband ordered chicken balti and I ordered madras with chips and mushroom pilau, can honestly say it’s the worst curry we have ever tasted! The chips were frozen chips and weren’t cooked throughly the balti tasted like salt and full of grease. The madras was like water no taste at all. We paid the bill asked to box it up for my husband to put the full lot in the bin as we left! Would not recommend at all! £80 down the drain.

I would rate the food 5/10. Chicken biryani lacked essential ingredients bcus of which it tasted somewhat like fried rice. It was served with veg sauce - Biryani does not need sauce. For starter we ordered Chicken momo. What we received was chicken roll ( wrapped in tortilla) - and they still call it momo. Its deceiving.

Really enjoyed my visit to The Capital with a couple of friends yesterday. Everything about the experience was great, from the warm greeting and the patient, relaxed service, to the wonderful food and refreshingly cold Cobra lager. We each ordered different dishes and were happy with our choices. The ingredients seemed fresh and the presentation of the food was good. We managed a last pint in a nearby pub after our meal and all agreed that we'd gladly visit again.

Me and my wife have been the last 2 weekends in a row and have tried several different things including mixed platter starters, lamb chop starters, chicken tikka starters, Balti, jalfrezi, dupiaza and all were delicious. The pickle tray with the poppadoms doesn’t have anything really hot on and when we mentioned this the waiter came back with chopped onion salad full of green chillies which was perfect. Where do I start ! Keema naan bread had very little meat in so they bought me another one. The Madras was Watery and tasteless. The head waiter did take the 2 meals back to the kitchen to try and sort the dish out but it was still the worst madras I had tasted. We were told by the waiter that they had the same Chef for over 20 years and that they madras was in his own words ( runny ) ? We asked for the bill and left the full meal. We weren’t even offed any discount. Disgraceful.

On a chilly windy evening my wife, daughter and I walked round to The Capital from our hotel on the other side of The Wear. It was well worth it. The Capital is beautfully decorated and benefits from an extensive but tastefully and logically compiled menu. I stuck to the vegetarian options and was very pleased with the aloo gobi as well as the flagship mixed vegetable curry. This is a very professional restaurant with excellent service as well as Cobra and a decent wine list. Furthermore, they even serve french fries - it's the North East after all! Very good option when in Durham.

We booked for a meal here as we were in the area for a few days and it seemed like a good idea given that the eat out to help out was making everywhere very busy. We arrived on time but seating was delayed as they were full and we were asked to wait. People turned up behind us and decided not to wait but to go to the bar and order a drink. They were then seated before us. Not a massive problem, but not very polite on the part of the staff. Food was ok. Table service was ok. Nothing particularly special. Social distancing Isn't high up on this resturants priority list, and although we booked and left a phone number they didnt ask who we were on arrival, so not sure if the Track and Trace system is in use. Given the strange world we are living in at the moment, I won't be reccomending this place.

Had an overnight stay in Durham and booked the capital for dinner. Our seat was ready as soon as we went in, service was quick and we had both our starters and mains within the hour. Food was of high standard and the staff were very nice and accommodating. Would highly recommend. We had vegetable samosas and chicken tikka paneer to start. For mains we had chicken tikka madras (which wasn’t overly spicy) and chicken tikka Rogan which seemed very tomato based. Dispite saving £20 on the eat out to help out scheme. All dishes were lovely and of great portion size.

First child free evening for a long time so decided to head to the Capital as the meals previously have been fantastic. As it was the “eat out to help out”, we booked a table for 7:30 knowing it was likely to be busy. We arrived at 7:25 to be advised there would be a 5-10 minute wait and we could either wait inside or outside. Due to the busyness of the restaurant, and to allow for social distancing, we chose to wait outside. Big mistake. The 3 groups that arrived after us were seated before us even though some were the same size party. After 40 minutes we were eventually seated and drinks ordered. A further 10 minutes passed while people who had tables booked at 8pm were receiving their drinks and starters, and we were still waiting to order. We spoke to one of the staff and were told that our orders would be “pushed up the list”. After 1 hour and 15 minutes we were still without starters or even poppadoms and no acknowledgement from any of the staff so we walked out. The first time ever we have left a restaurant this way. I appreciate these are new and challenging times but their procedures for seating and ordering need seriously looking at.

We didn’t book, eight of us went on a locals recommendation. Well decorated restaurant, pleasant staff. You can’t prefer poppadoms without ordering food first, never been refused anywhere before. Most of the group had onion Bahji starter, well presented two large balls with salad, tasted very bland, lacked spice and were hard in the middle. The chicken tikka Balti was very bland, although I asked for more heat, it had a very burnt taste which became clear, the garlic slices were all burnt and inedible throughout the base gravy. The chicken tikka was the brightest red and slightly chewy, not the best I’ve had. Mentioned this to the waiter, who came back and said the chef is sorry ? Garlic nan fresh and hot but no garlic, everyone agreed the same very bland definitely we’ve had far better, so we won’t return

Been a regular customer here over the years never really had many issues. Went last night with some friends and the food was below par. Half way through our main course a group of approx 30 students came in who the staff tried to squeeze in behind our table. Our group couldn’t hear each other talking for the amount of noise and we had to move quite a lot during our meal to let the students and staff past. Then they sat people directly behind us and to the side they were that close it was uncomfortable. We approached this with the staff who just laughed it off. We soon got the bill and departed. It was unprofessional and clearly the standards of food have dropped.

Curries are decent but they overdo it with the heat content. Not much care is taken in good presentation of food- the vegetables were chopped roughly. The stuffed paratha is highly recommended. Upon entering, the two-tier seating arrangements is very appeasing. The layout and number of seats in the restaurant allows for a relaxing and quiet atmosphere. The food itself was of a great portion size and also was very well priced. In terms of quality, the food was astounding. The menu caters to all tastes and the selection of starters and mains is superbly extensive. The flavours of one of the chef's specials was mind-blowing! The food wasn't oily and unnatural and maintained a traditional and authentic taste. I had a Dhansak which they altered the spiciness specifically to accommodate my tastes. For the past 20 years I have realised food too hot and spices is not for me and believe me the 20years before that of eating this food taught me what my likes were. So for 20 yr eating an Indians or ordering in I have had nothing but Korma. This is the smoothest, mouth watering, to die for Korma ever. And I mean EVER!!! This visit was my third time at Durham and my third time at this very lovely restaurant with the friendliest and attentive staff and the died and gone to heaven food. The chips, rice and keema nan are the best and such yummy accompaniments too. I had the king prawns starter which started me on the stairs up to heaven. It turns out, they know our Spice Garden friends on Ocean Road in South Shields. The food was excellent and although we didn't appreciate the frozen chips, everything else was perfect. The reason for the frozen type was due to the lack of customers requesting chips, which is fair enough. The owner gave us free spirit drinks for our anniversary. The Capital restaurant was recommended by the hotel we were staying in and it was definitely well worth the walk. Excellent food and attentive service. One of the best Indian restaurants I have had the pleasure of visiting.

My wife and I walk in after a few drinks round town ,waited twenty minutes for table and once we sat down and ordered a main to share with various sides we were told we had to order a minimum of two mains and two sides , we were so hungry we ordered the extra main but left it and sent it back to kitchen when we paid the bill , we have been to the Capital several times over the years but will never go again ,

Called in here after the theatre and although it was busy and we hadn’t booked they found a table for us- there was a good atmosphere in the restaurant. The service was efficient and the food fresh and plentiful - however our mains were a little mild for our palates

Very tasty food, good selection & very reasonably priced. Will come back here again. Only quibble we had was the fact we waiting quite a while for our drinks,we had to ask twice where I drinks were, they did however apologise & it was a case of miscommunication.

Great chicken kabab, average lamb kabab but the rest of the food (lamb curry, bhindi) were really good. After our starters, we asked them to spice things up which they did nicely. Owner/ manager came out and chatted with us. Will go there again when in town.

If your undecided where to eat and fancy a curry, then this is the place. The spices, fresh ingredients and overall quality and presentation of their dishes was excellent. Living close to Bradford I thought we had some great curry houses, but this beats them all! The staff so attentive and helpful. Martin & Verity

About average in terms of price, quality and service. No complaints, but no outstanding dishes. Most positive was that the beer was cold.

The chef here is second to none, the spices and fresh ingredients come through in the food placed before you, together with a fine selections of drinks on offer. Another superb dining experience.

Went here with a group and we all enjoyed our food. I am amazed by customers that clearly want freebies but react by leaving a bad review, Really shouldnt be allowed in the door. I also on another note have a vegan friend who knows her very different dietary needs and always phones first as she understands her menu is different, she never gives a bad review just does her homework beforehand.

Being a vegan in UK is fairly easy these days. However, while ordering at The Capital, I found out that the staff has no clue what vegan food means. When I tried to ask if the vegetable momos, the samosas, the chapatis can be made vegan, he told me that even the samosa pastry has eggs in it and so does the momos. He even said that the chapatis might contain dairy (I know that the preparation of naan might require eggs or yogurt). Well, I am an Indian and have eaten at various Indian restaurants in various parts of the world and nowhere have I heard such strange claims. I am not entirely sure if the staff are clearly aware of the ingredients in the food (which is a must for any restaurant given the different requirements of people). Having seen such a good review on tripadvisor, I really wanted to try out this restaurant but alas!I will urge the management to take note of my comment as a constructive criticism and try to ask the staff to understand the various food choices of people.

Have visited this restaurant on a couple of occasions before and after visits to other places decided to revisit. The food was exceptional and we had Chicken Tikka Masala and Prawn Bhuna with two different rices and plain naan. In order to do the main justice we had poppadoms and pickle to start. Good variety and quantity of pickles. We like to have plates at a temperature to have the end of our meal as good as the beginning and were not disappointed. In comparison food at other indian restaurants don't compare as the food is generally cold. Top notch food with service to match!!

The service and interior of this restaurant are all good. The curry however was not good. I ordered a chicken tikka dish. It came at an infernally hot temperature that only a microwave oven can produce. It was bland and tasteless. A shame because it is a nice looking place however my food was below average.
