Cold chips that looked like they had been fried multiple times and very small fish. Disgusting, overpriced rubbish, we won't be back!

Good food and theres great spots to sit in st.andrews to eat if you have a car itll be great in the summer

It was good but not extraordinary. Chips and fish can be recommended. The mashed peas have been lukewarm at the best. However, fresh fish! And very friendly staff.

The food was amazing! The best fish and chips I've had in my whole life, the curry sauce is worth everything. But I felt it was a little overpriced, especially with the service charge and all. But either way I would definitely come again.

We were very well received despite arriving unexpectedly with 4 teachers and 17 students. Some shared their very hearty meal. The fish was fresh and delicious. After negotiations the staff was accommodating with the payment and accepted several cards and cash. The boss was particularly kind to one of our students who was unwell. Next time we will book for the entire group.

They have a menu for under £10 during the week, which is pretty good. The fish and chips very good. Also tasty is the cullen skink, a kind of Vichyssoise with smoked fish. Very decent portions, we got a very good price despite the additional 12.5% ​​they attribute to the service. You can not pay, but I think it should be taken into account.

Tailend was disappointing. I chose this restaurant because my daughter has food allergies. I inquired before we were seated and was told she could eat there. I again inquired with our server when we placed our order. Several minutes later, our server returned and informed us that my daughter couldn’t safely have what she ordered. A grilled piece of fish was offered instead. While I am grateful that they told us and were so very careful of my daughter’s needs, I was very disappointed that we were ever told she could have the fish and chips. We would have gone somewhere else had we known all of this prior to ordering.

Been going to the tail end for approximately 5 years and this last year it’s getting worse and worse. Today we ordered 2 fish suppers the fish was so overcooked we couldn’t eat round the edges of it and chips were disgusting , this used to be a great place for fish and chips but it’s now awful won’t be back again.

Great chippy with restaurant at the back. Amazing range of fresh seafood, and check the specials board for the day's catches. Choose between battered, breaded or grilled, various sauces/toppings, chips, roast potatoes, salad, etc.

Really lovely food. All the specials were lovely, particularly the monkfish. Personal service provided by Mark was much appreciated. Chilli and garlic sauce was delicious but not for the faint hearted! Dog friendly too, always a nice perk. Will definitely return soon.

We live locally & have had take out b4 & was good. Dined in & Asked for a cheeseburger & was told no problem which turned out to be really tasty. Husband asked for Scampi (not on dine-in menu) & again no problem & good. Top up portion of chips is not advertised or was offered to us - that’s a black mark for them. I would not return due to the severely over price of £3.30 for a can of Diet Coke - £7.50 for 24 cans at Tesco = 34p a can. I know they have to cover costs etc but this is an outrageous price - another black mark. I asked Tip included @12.5% to be taken of as I’m not certain that the staff get the full amount so I gave our server £5 cash which is our usual tip & it worked out it was more than the 12.5%.

An apt, affordable little spot to pick up a simple but delicious lunch or dinner from, with lots of fresh fish and shellfish options for those who don't like their fare battered and fried, too — the Arbroath smokie is especially worth a try, and the prawns and scallops are decent picks, too.

Great food, we had the fish and chips, with batter and breadcrumbs. The homemade tarter sauce was unique and tasteful. Atmosphere was very nice with friendly and attentive service. Price was a little steep with fish and chips coming to around £20+ per person however having sed that it was totally worth it.

We had a wonderful lunch here, the staff were really welcoming and accommodating & the food was excellent! Really tasty & fair prices for the quality.

"Gluten free" fish and chips made my husband whezz and cough, obviously not gluten free 😡. Long wait time and mostly batter, small fish. £25 for suppers, and an upset stomach. No thank you, won't be back.

First class service as always. Ethan was a gent couldn’t have done anymore, plus all the staff & the front of house was very kind & accommodating & looked after us well. Always a treat to come back over from Northern Ireland & have a great night in Tailend

First time in St Andrews having read the reviews we decided to go the guy who we took to be the manager said the restaurant was quite fully booked but, he accommodated our party of 4. Have to say the service and food was excellent. The only thing I bought to this guys attention was the state of the hand dryer in the gents toilet which was a disgrace. He did say he would pay it attention asap. Other than that a great visit

Food was decent . Ordered fish cakes which we normally do , and then found out they had changed them to a salmon / chilli instead of the regular fish cake! Server did not offer any indication of the change - received the fish cakes and hated them ? Asked to speak to mgr who pretty much told us we were shit out of luck - will never be back ! Service was great - management was pathetic, not a care to attempt to remedy the situation. Options in st Andrew’s just as good with people who want to cater to guests spending money .

Very poor, more batter than fish, chips and batter saturated in oil. Service very disjointed, new payment system in place which doesn't help service. No signs in place to advise. 1/ 10 very poor and I won't be back

Oysters were fresh and delicious. Mussels were fantastic, but would have been perfect if they toasted the bread with it.

Food was great, atmosphere was very lively, and the staff seemed to be enjoying themselves. I thought the prices were maybe a hair higher than what I expected, but in a tourist town they were inline with what we saw elsewhere. Best fish and chips we had in Scotland.

Some of the crispiest fish you could ask for! They’re often busy, and rightfully so - equally good dining in or take away. The mushy peas are a sleeper hit not to be missed. The batter for the fish is excellent, though the chips can sometimes be on the softer side (not always, and one of my minor pet peeves about fish & chips - I always want both as crispy as possible!). However, the service is always stellar and the meal always memorable.

Fish & Chips. That's all you need to know. 😆 But, seriously, it was cooked perfectly and so yummy! The salmon was not my favorite, though. First, I ordered it with the homemade pesto sauce. It tasted off. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just wasn't jiving for me. Plus, they serve it with a salad(I was not made aware of this when ordering) that is covered in raw shaved fennel. I despise fennel with every taste bud I have. It is one of the worst flavors I can think of. So, they took it all away and made me a new grilled salmon plain, which I ordered medium. When it finally came back out, it was still rare in the middle. I didn't dare say anything again, so I just ate the edges. I will say that my spritz was delicious, and that helped the wait be more bearable. I got the elderflower base for the build your own option. All around, it wasn't the best experience for me, but my husband loved every bite of the fish and chips. I would only go back to order that.

Heard good reports about this place. Cod and chips takeaway, chips seemed very like pre-cut chilled from a supplier and suspiciously like re-heats. Cod was saturated in grease with thin patchy batter. £13.50 for this and a can of juice isn't cheap. Won't be making a return visit.

Simple straightforward regional fare at great prices. Fish and chips are more than enough to split between a couple. Ask for an extra slaw. It was special. Service was quick and the staff looked happy to be there.

Been using the Tailend for years but now it's definitely going downhill £12.90 for a fish supper fish was very small and so thin it was overcooked and curled chips were overcooked too I know some places have increased their prices but they still maintain quality looks like the Tailend are now selling small portions for a high price maybe the tourists wouldn't notice but when the locals stop going they may pay attention during the quiet times

After reading reviews we weren't disappointed! We had fish and chips and the batter on the fish was so yummy. We were lucky to walk in and get a table but was very popular and if you don't want to miss out I would recommend booking a table. Staff were lovely and helpful, definitely be back!

Cod & Chips Special very disappointing. Cod was thin & watery. Batter also thin. Chips not included. Overpriced for the quality of food served. I don't recommended the cod. Wish I had ordered the haddock & chips. That would have been £10.00 less with chips included . I don't particularly think my complaint was taken seriously either. No financial reimbursement offered. There must be better places for fish & chips than here.

Outstanding service from Mark. We came in for our son's 5th birthday dinner. We were incredibly well looked after for the entire evening by Mark, who went out of his way to make our experience special, interacting with and entertaining the children, helping us in and out of restaurant with the pram and the little ones, and even arranged a special surprise dessert with candle and managed to get the whole restaurant singing happy birthday to our wee boy which was such a special memory for us all. Incredibly efficient and friendly, what a huge asset to the business Mark is. Food was lovely as always. Looking forward to our next visit. Thanks again from the Caira family x

Everything was just great, starting with the service.. The order was brought very quickly, the dishes were delicious, especially the fish, it just melted in the mouth.. Pleasant atmosphere.. I really liked it.

Was at Tailend today food was nice but one member of staff quite rude a male staff member wouldn't go back.

It was an amazing experience, fantastic food and fantastic service. Price is also quite good. Looking forward to come again to this restaurant.

First visit, just finished my lemon sole in breadcrumbs and it was delicious. Could only manage the 2 free refills on the chips though as I had to save some room for ice cream. Visited again today (1st August 24), lovely light batter on the fish and my wife had a very nice gluten free batter on hers. Accompanied by a gluten free lager too.

The fish and chips here was great. Best I've had in the UK! Fresh fish, perfectly crispy fried batter, and probably the best chips I've had as well. You won't regret it!

A great meal, in the supercharged golf mad Open Championship environment only St Andrews could deliver. Packed seating meant our eardrums took a beating, but our panned fried cod and haddock with perfect local green veg and side chips were absolutely spot on! Highly recommended.

Expensive and chips were burnt..

The overall service was very bad. The appetizer was terrible. There was a strange sauce with unpalatable beans on it. We asked the waiter for water twice and he didn't give it to us. When we finally left, we found him playing with his mobile phone at the front desk. A very bad experience, I will not recommend it to others and will not come again

The service was very good. The staff were really polite and friendly, and made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious. The fish and chips were very tasty and the Thai curry was superb. Would definitely eat there again given the chance. It was very busy (understandably due to the quality) so would recommend booking in advance. Oh and the fried halloumi was fantastic. We were all so full at the end but couldn't stop picking food off the plates. Did I mention the Thai fish curry was delicious 😋.

Great place for fish and chips and a beer if you sit in

We were there for yesterday and had a terrible experience as tourists visiting the place for the first time. Firstly the service counter staff did not tell us that we could only do takeout so we gave our order and sat at the table in the restaurant waiting for our meal to arrive. Then my wife (who cannot eat outside food for health reasons and was eating her home packed noodles) was told very rudely by the loudmouth table manager that she has to stop eating outside food in the restaurant. We agreed to this and tried to explain but the rude arrogant table manager would not budge. Finally we were told we cannot eat the ordered lunch sitting inside as there was a separate menu and cost involved which is very strange....all in all a very bad experience and strange way of treating tourists who don't know these stupid rules of your restaurant.

Great food but unfortunate incident happened where there were pieces of glass in our banana ice cream. Pointed to the staff; but they tried to keep it hush and simply provided a discount on the bill. I wish there was a polite apology and the manager came to address the situation. £9.55 was the cost of my life. 😕

The food was very enjoyable and very tasty, we had fish tacos, fish and chips, and Hummus. Service was friendly and super fast.

Came here with my friend for lunch. Had booked a table. Turned up 5mins early and were told very rudely by a staff member they weren't open yet and to come back in 10mins. They added 12.5 % service charge to our bill. Unacceptable Customer service probably the worst we've ever experienced. The staff were more interested in talking to each other than their paying customers. When I asked the person to remove the service charge as we were given really bad service he had the most awful attitude towards me. Won't hurry back which is a shame because the fish and chips were amazing

Bestes Fish and Chips Restaurant in St. Andrews. Must Visit!

Used to be better but they are now using vegetable oil and the chips are just not the same, they have that horrible oil flavour. Chippys should be cooked in fat as they have always been. Why change something that isn't broken

I have just had the most delicious fish and chips in Tail-end. I am a coeliac and I could not fault how attentive the staff were making sure that for the first time in years I could eat a delicious plate of traditional fish and chips that were completely gluten free. The atmosphere was super and the staff were attentive. Thank you for the amazing food and the amazing experience.

The best fish and chips I’ve had in a long while, amazing service- the restaurant manager Mark offered to take my son who was struggling to settle and took him for a little walk around the restaurant and into a quieter area so that I could enjoy my dinner with friends. Thank you!! Highly recommended

Great night at the local "fish n chippie" with fresh oysters, then scallops, then grilled seabass. Overall good value and quality. Great service from Mark and his team 👏

Got the jumbo sausage supper which was nice as it was cooked to order but the chips on the other hand left a lot to be desired, very dry and the staff looked to be pre cooking the chips then re cooking them to order.

Visited with family in June 2024. Had Thai curry and Haddock. Both were great. Staff was friendly and service was quick. Food came in no time. Place was very busy. Will definitely try again.

It was really disappointing for me. I tried the fried prawns with salad. The prawns were fine but the salad was really poor. Lettuce was not even cut, no tomatoes no onions only lettuce in the Salad. I never had a salad like this before. The food was not worth money. Also the customer service was not good.

A must for fish & chips if you pass through Saint Andrews, maybe a little chaotic (if you happen to be there during graduation week like us) but the staff is super efficient. Generous and good portions!

I will start with the fact that food is fantastic as it's always have been, but that's the only good thing remains that isn't enough to justify the price anymore. The portion got significantly smaller than they were five years ago, perhaps due to CoL (not that you could increase the price any further). But the most insulting thing is service. I stopped by last night for a quick food trip down memory lane since I was in town for graduation. After all, I eat here all the time when I went through my undergrad program. All staffs were real pushy about my partner and I ordering drinks. When we make it clear that we are not ordering any (sentiment received with an exaggerated "really???" from one of the staff), the service just gone downhill from there. Extremely hard to flag down any one for anything and when we do, just annoyed look shot at us from all around. It was a moderate busy night but the staffs seem to be treating the next table (who ordered beer and wine) cheerily enough. You charge gratuity on top of 20-quid-a-plate fish and chips, you could at least try to make it worth it. Our reciept also came out a wrong price (I don't believe it's intentional, but just an annoying cherry on top). I think the staffs were expected we order something extravagant since one of our party is the graduate (not that we offer up the fact). Truth is we just want a nice quick meal and be off. No one should be pressured into ordering alcohol anyway, no matter the occasion. Sucky.

Expensive fish that tasted like a lot of breading. We paid for two pints of beer, even though two cans of beer were served. Definitely not recommended!

went there after being told it was excellent. got a fish supper to take out. found somewhere to park up and eat and the fish was swimming in grease.chips were nothing special. sorry after that i wouldn't go back.
