Beautifully cooked fish and chips with home made mushy peas. The chips were exceptional - with the magic bit of coating that made then crispy, golden and extra delicious. Very friendly service. Will definitely come again.

I haven't eaten in the shop, so cannot comment on that, however this is the best Fish and Chips i have ever tasted, and as a resident of Barnstaple is the only Fish and Chip shop i now use. In my opinion it is the creme de la creme of Chip shops. Very polite and friendly staff, lovely hot fresh food and nice and clean premises. Whenever we have anyone stay, a visit to scoffs is always on the agenda.

This restaurant is super friendly and the food delicious! I had scampi chips and salad while my husband had salt and pepper squid chips and salad..proper Yorkshire chips cooked to perfection, not greasy stick to the roof of your mouth but crispy moreish chips and I'm not usually a chip lover ! Will definitely go again when im next in the area...to the owners...Will let you know if I suss out the recipe and have success 😂

A lady aggressively told us to leave and that we couldn’t eat in although we where sat at a table and where only being friendly and wouldn’t give us a reason on why we had to leave. Bad costumer service

Used to be Great will not bother again new owners need to go back to using proper chips cooked in batter and Dripping today tasted like frozen chips hardly any batter and normal oil

Absolutely fab ! We stumbled across this “chippy” on our day out from woolacombe. We sat outside in the autumn sunshine and ate them. Wonderful, could not recommend enough and we’re from lancs !!. Don’t know how they cook the chips but they are lovely and crispy. Definitely warrants a second visit !

Looked up on trip advisor for evening meal and found Scoffs . Nice clean entrance and sanitizer in place . Ordered fish & chips for two and awaited delivery to a separate table . Just 5 minutes later they were ready for us to takeaway. Friendly goodbye from the owner . Got back to our room to enjoy really fresh fish and crunchy delicious chips . Just lovely and those chips were just something else , thanks .

Visited on a Saturday lunch time and was surprised to find it not busy .fish and chips were excellent.staff friendly and helpful.will visit again hen back in the area.

Initially I was dragged into Scoffs by my niece (who loves her food ), but now we make a point of visiting this fabulous fish and chip restaurant every time we visit Barnstable. Wayne and Mrs. Wayne ( sorry luv, don't know your name, but we'll bring you a teapot next visit!!!) make us warmly welcome. And if that was not enough the food is so very nice. Please open a Scoffs fir me in Bridport. X

Tuesday 8th Oct 6pm. Only customers in restaurant. Our fish 'n' chips were cooked to order. While they were cooking the fryer alarm was being triggered constantly. I was told it was the fat level and there was nothing the operator could do about it. Nearly left as it was very annoying. We were offered ketchup and it arrived in a refillable plastic bottle. Our meal arrived and looked great. Crunchy chips and crisp fish. As we started to eat you could see the fat collecting on the plate. Finished the meal and too be honest would never go in again. Both my wife and myself felt quite unwell afterwards, the taste of fat kept regurgitating.

Never tasted anything as good as scoff fish and chips, no pretension just good food. place extremely clean, sraff nice and chatty when they have the time ,i think they need more staff, but its nice to know the food is cooked almost to order. always worth a few minutes wait. I will be going back regularly for my dose of fish and chips mushy peas. Better than some of these so called award winning places around Devon.

Terse service, never had greasy chewy chips before, sausage in batter tasteless, would not return in famine

Stopped here to get some sausage and chips for lunch and was very impressed. Here on holiday so not sure on the area and must say we was pleasantly surprised. Extremely clean and staff extra friends. The chips and sausages were piping hot and delicious. Definitely recommend.

This is the first time u and my family have been into scoffs The food was excellent cooked as it's ordered the staff was friendly and helpful and it was very clean would recommend it to all my family and friends we will certainly be back again

Bit peckish so stopped for a small portion , the service was friendly and quick . The chips were lovely fresh , hot and very light and golden . I didnt realise they were fried in batter until later but they did not feel greasy at all . Really enjoyed them !

Sadie was very professional, looked after us very well. Toilets immaculate. Would recommend and definitely be back.

The 'Yorkshire' chips (cooked in a very light batter not oil) were very tasty and cooked to order so really hot. Premises were modern and clean and the two staff most friendly and welcoming.

I stopped in to pick up a quick supper for the family. Fish was tiny, soggy and possibly undercooked. The scampi was awful too. Fell apart. Chips weren’t very good either. All really really greasy.Threw the lot away in the end. I know it’s a Tuesday night, but c’mon, wake up Barnstaple. We deserve better.

went to this resturant after driving to the pelican one in sticklepath busy no parking so we came into town to scoffs......probably the cleanest one we have ever been in ....the staff were fabulous......the food superb.....best ever fish and chips....if you are in the barnstaple area do not go anywhere else....even the toilets were swish........this is the one.

Went in because a friend kept saying how good it was. They wasn't lying, nice of fish and tasty chips, battered. It's a nice place overall too, clean and friendly, not too busy.

The chips were cold and battered. Some warning that the chips were battered would have been helpful because not only do I not like batter but If I knew, I wouldn’t have had any chips

Just visited Barnstaple and had a quick bite for lunch with my family. Sat inside for a chippy meal... great service and quality food... very clean environment to eat in....

My friend brought me in here with my support dog for a last supper together as I was moving away. We had a lovely welcome and an excellent cod and chips, the chips having been lightly battered, so crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle.A clean and uncluttered place, smart, dog friendly sausage on the house and cool on a very hot day. A poignant meal for us both as we said farewell.

Fish is to die for perfectly cooked and yummy chips sat outside while they cooked us a fresh fish and chips tasted superb had to keep saying how good it was as people walked past I think at least 4 people then when in very friendly staff and polite and cortuesry brought food out very hot and tasty perfect place and out side has a cover to which helps stops the seagulls pestering you great staff even check everything is ok with your food, we will be back 5 stars for food quality and customer service

You have just got to try the chips with a difference. Really worth a go. These chips are something special

Food is actually very nice. My boy had cod and chips, I had chips mushy peas and curry sauce. All nice and tasty, chips bit weird (orange, very crispy, coated in something). I walked in just to notice a sign informing me that they take cash only. After returning to an empty restaurant I sat down and I was given a menu. Menu stated that no takeaway meals are allowed in the restaurant. So I started to compare the menu that I was given to the takeaway menu on display. Instantly I've noticed a big price difference between both. I understand why that was, they had to wash up and clean the tables etc but restaurant was completely empty and I wasn't fancy eating in an empty, dull place lacking in any atmosphere at all. I don't think they stay there much longer.

Most disgusting I’ve ever tasted. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. Rock hard chips and tasted like they had been sat there in old oil all day ended up putting them in the bin.

They sale the best chips covered in a secret ingredient extremely nice with faggots or they also do it with chicken. Reasonably priced as well and really friendly staff.

It said Yorkshire Fish and Chips on the door and would you believe it - they where brilliant. Home made mushy peas, Haddock skin on, brilliant chips, pot of tea and the staff where excellent - service with a very big smile. I don’t know what they cook the chips in, but they are too die for !We’ll be back.

Could not believe that Barnstaple had a Scoffs and therefore we ensured that we made time to visit. If you have never tried the chips you have to. I was served by an older lady (possibly the manager) who was very polite and welcoming. Good value and very tasty. A visit is highly recommended.

We have always had a good and very friendly service from this restaurant. The chips are delicious with a unique crispy, thin batter coating. I would recommend the chicken chunks, chips with salad. The salad was freshly prepared (not from a bag) with crispy iceberg lettuce, sliced red onion, cherry tomatoes and diced cucumber. Hubby had the cod and chips and my daughter had a cheeseburger and chips, all of which were freshly cooked to order, excellent quality, served quickly, well presented and with generous portions. They also do really good quality lattes, hot chocolate etc. to enjoy with the great tasting food. The restaurant is spotlessly clean, light and airy and within a few yards from the High Street in Barnstaple.The tall gentleman that regularly serves us even gave us a Christmas card when we left, now that is what I call great customer service! I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough and look forward to our next visit soon.

Just eaten cod and weird orange coloured chips dripping with oil. Could not finish eating it. I'm getting all the symptoms of MSG flavour enhancers: Itchy skin, runny nose, tingling lips. I won't be going to Scoffs again.

Bright and airy restaurant with some bistro seating. Quick service and very clean decor. I had Haddock, chips and mug of tea, which was very good! Very reasonable prices and a menu that proves it not just fish and chips.

Went to this chippy first time in 2016 jst returned 2017 whilst on hols same 2 guys behind the counter .not sure what the chips are cooked in or how they are cooked but go and try them for yourselves you will not be disappointed ive never eaten chips anywhere else cooked like this and to me there brill .thanks lads for great fish and chips reasonably priced keep up the good work may see you in 2018.

We have previously visited Scoffs both in Paignton on several occasions, and in Barnstaple before. We actually recommended it to some of our passengers and several went in for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food was as always superb, the staff very friendly, nothing was too much trouble for them.

Best Mug of Tea in Devon ..I huge big mug with a decent tea bag..It does make me laugh people moaning about the chips having a coating and how it wasn't what they expected and were not happy ..haha what do they think the big sign means when it states. The Yorkshire Chip...I don't know exactly what it is so I asked and the test chip I received was wonderful. great service from the two chaps running it over the three days I had in Barnstable. The Chips are amazing soo tasty ..loved this place ..thanks a lot from two out of towners.oh ps.. it costs a fraction more to eat inside because. Your food cis served to you at your table on plates. They have to wash up the plates and cutlery hense a fraction more cost. Get used to it. Cracking Fish & Chip Shop.

Had a meal here on Monday, food was cold and very over priced. Fish was poor greasy! Curry sauce horrific!!

The cleanliness and the prices attracted us to here whilst holiday. The food is amazing staff absolutely lovely couldn't do enough, my special needs son didn't touch his touch his chips so they deducted this from our bill and also never charged for his cup of tea we would have happily paid well worth a visit a credit to Barnstaple and Devon thank you only cost us £20 for 4 meals and drinks exellent keep up the good work!!

Very unlike any other chippy. After all it was a high st bank! Spotless, kind and attentive staff. Excellent fish excellent chips. And free pot of tea cos they only had one small haddock

Friendly, efficient and attentive serving staff, spotlessly clean, bright, modern and airy restaurant and toilet facilities. The food is delicious and I would recommend you try their chicken nuggets......large chunks of chicken breast in a tasty batter, yum! Looking forward to our next visit.

My husband and I got a take away from here the other day. The portions were of a decent size and the chips really crispy even after taking them home wrapped in paper. The chips are cooked in beef dripping and are covered with a light batter which are really tasty but towards the end the flavour was a little intense. The sausage in batter was very crunchy and not greasy. The savaloys were a disappointment unfortunately they are just sat in brine so they were very soft and squishy so you didn't get that nice crunch to the skin and the curry sauce was very watery but over all it was a lovely meal and we would visit again. The shop itself is extremely clean and the staff friendly. Food is priced at a really reasonable price and they do an oap special too.

We nipped in for a few bits and the server asked had we tried his chips before. We said no, so we each tried a chip and then proceeded to order some. Absolutely amazing. Fantastic food and lovely service. 10/10

This is a nice-looking fish and chip shop. Just walking past, it started to rain, fancied a snack and shelter from the rain. Ordered a portion of chips. Asked if I could eat them there until it stopped raining - no, that would cost extra. So ran through the rain to the car, only to find the chips looked strange. Tried a few and realised they were covered in batter!!! Not great for someone with gluten sensitivity. So now I'm suffering. The first one or two taste ok but the taste gets worse - all that grease, yuk. This is really irresponsible considering how many people are sensitive to gluten and the health concerns re all that extra oil trapped in the batter. When you ask for a portion of chips, that is what you expect - not battered chips!! Product not as described. Can't even get my money back as I had left when I discovered it. Won't be going back and I don't recommend; there's plenty of proper chip shops in Barnstaple, where you can ask for chips and get potatoes fried in oil and that is all.

Popped in for some chips & can honestly say they were the best I've ever had. Their special coating is to die for. I'll be back!

tried these outside and one was nice but after a portion oh my ....never again, too greasy for us luckily the portions of chips are small. One of us had fish which looked like it had been refried ? it was greasy and chewy. now cant stand the smell which blows around the square

First time we've visited here and I must admit it was not what i expected after hearing different reviews on this place. We had a small cod and chips each which the cod was amazing but the atmosphere and the rest of it just didn't make it enough. We had to pay extra to eat in which to me does not make sense, we then had one waitress cleaning and putting tables away while we were eating and then the dishwasher was going off the whole time which sounded like road works were going off and you could not relax properly. I think it was really rude to clean down while you had customers in there wait till they leave and you lock the door!

I have visited this chip shop a couple of times and found the chips extremely tasty and crisp but not a big portion. The fish is of good quality in a crispy tasty batter. I would love to give a 5 star rating but someone in our party had a portion of fish only and it came without any salad garnish, when queried they said we would have to purchase a full side salad. Little extras can make a big difference. Will visit again.

Not sure what these bad boy chips are coated with, but they are incredibly tasty and moreish. We were drawn in by one of the staff handing out samples in the street. The chippy is clean and the menu is clearly laid out. Would visit again when we next visit.

Having tried a chip sample from street promotion, I eventually made it to try a fish and chip meal. I only got one portion for my son to see what they were like, which was lucky as it turned out to be very disappointing. We purchased large cod, large chips and a curry sauce. The portions were almost bordering on the small size and fish batter very soggy. We got the curry sauce as other reviews said how good it was.........don't agree and no different to any other chip shop sauce. It was half an hour before closing and staff looked tired and fed up, which I can sympathise with but it's a shame as we really were hoping to have found a new local chippy we could use and support, but this proved not to be the case.

As we were sightseeing in Barnstable this week, we were approached by a young lady offering us chips, after tasting one, I asked where she worked, she pointed across the road to Scoffs. But we had our two dogs with us and didn't think we could go in . She very kindly went over and asked and the answer was yes come in, the dogs are welcome. The service in this establishment was really excellent considering its a fast food place. Even gave us a bowl for the dogs. Chips were amazing , and the pulled pork tender. Staff and owner very friendly. I would thoroughly recommend Scoffs for a quick simple meal . FAB.

Stopped for lunch unaware of the speciality of The Yorkshire Chip so somewhat surprised when the bright orange chips came out but they were delicious. A pleasant lunch stop on a first visit to Barnstaple, cash only though.

I had a three course meal last night and wandered past Scoffs. I went in to ask them what a Yorkshire chip was.They kindly gave me a bag as they were closing. Now I was full! Completely and utterly full, but I tasted one.Firstly they looked really yellow, and oh my... They were utterly incredible. Literally the best chip I've ever tasted. On a completely full stomach I managed almost an entire portion. They were irresistible. I've no idea about any of their food, or service or anything else. All I can tell you is the chips are in a league of their own... Not to mention how kind they were to me..

Fantastic, lightly battered chips with amazing taste. Friendly staff, quick service, we normally do takeaways and the kids love having an old fashioned cone of chips!

The only place in town for Yorkshire style chips and fish that melts in your mouth. Good service and reasonable prices.

After trying a free sample on offer in street near restaurant, I purchased a cone of lovely crispy fat chips with a soft centre. You could taste they were fried in beef dripping but were not at all greasy and a big enough portion for an adult as a luchtime snack. I will try the fish next time which looked very impressive.

I'd been given a free chip by a young girl outside Scoffs weeks ago and told hubby how delicious it was and finally got around to getting fish and chips from there tonight and worth the wait, the chips are beautiful , crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the whole meal was lovely, just don't make the mistake I made of trying to pay by card as they only take cash!

Scoffs fish &chips are really good, moist fresh fish, crunchy batter,chips are crisp outside & soft & fluffy inside,curry sauce is also recommended,better than the usual gloop!

I'm from Scotland and normally we get told we batter/deep fry everything.. These guys batter their chips! They are really nice chips though - even if they do look a bit orange! I also had gravy which was nice too! Would definitely get chips from here again if I was in the area.

Great food both take away and eat in. Good selection of traditional fare. The chips was the best every tasted the batter was light and crispy. So much to choose from.

I had no intention of having fish and chips for lunch until I was offered a free chip by a young lady standing nearby. I'm glad I took it. It was good enough to make me arrange to meet my wife and have fish and chips inside. The place is spotless, the staff friendly, service good and the cod and chips were excellent. Two minus points - they are not licensed to sell alcohol and on the day I visited I was only able to pay with cash - cards not accepted. I don't know if this is a temporary or permanent thing. Anyway, we will be returning very soon.

I couldn't believe it!! One of the staff was outside the shop giving away sample chips. They were amazing! Chips in some kind of batter that were delicious. I was inspired to go in and buy a cone of their chips. You will never know how good they are until you buy some.

In the US the competition between Burger King and McDonald's is measured by the customer's preference for fries and oh boy have Scoffs brought the war across the pond! I suspect the "chip war" is going to become a reality and serious in Barnstaple now.The other food is very good also but I can't help think about the chips. They boast to be the home of Yorkshire Chips and who am I to disagree?! Don't let the locals' small minded complaints about it not being Devonian get to you, this very clean, crisp and well presented fish 'n chips restaurant (also does take-away) is a pleasure to frequent. If you're passing by at the right time don't refuse to sample the chips being offered by staff on the street nearby.As a Yorkshireman all I need to go with them is a proper pint of Gravy!

This place has changed hands and now serves the best chips in the land. OMG fluffy on the inside and a secret crunchy batter on the out.....delicious! Their chicken nuggets are homemade with proper chicken breast fillet with a mouth watering crispy coating and don't get me started on the curry sauce! Can't wait until we go again! Staff are really friendly, restaurant and loos immaculate and reasonably priced. Well done guys!

These chips blew my mind battered chips abseloutly lush these chips with any meat be it pie, faggots goes hand in hand, their fish is lush, everything is always FRESH. The chips are golden as golden can be the BEST Barnstaple has to offer.
