Royal China in Hammersmith and Fulham

I don’t know where to begin… We go to many Chinese restaurants in London, both expensive and inexpensive. We had been to Royal China in Queensway in the past, and had a good experience. This Royal China was awful. The food was almost inedible, and a couple of things we wanted, they told us, they were out of. This was at 7:30 in the evening, when the restaurant was completely empty. The staff were disinterested in us, rude, callous, and really behaved as though they did not want us there, and it was an inconvenience for us to be there. If this restaurant does not survive, we would not be at all surprised. In a city like London, with so many good Chinese restaurants, I would not have thought that they can afford to behave the way they did, and produce the incredibly mediocre food that they produced. This is very sad, as we were looking forward to our dinner there.

The food & service used to be great - we have dined there many times. This time, the food was still good but the service was consistently appalling all afternoon. The head waiter was rude and everything was a problem, even down to tap-water. Sadly, after many years & great times there, we won't be going again.

I don't like writing negative reviews of local businesses, but oh dear. The place seemed clean, the menu was nice, even the food was OK. But, oh, the service. It was as if they simply didn't care if we were there or not, or what we thought of them. My daughter swore she saw one waiter palming his chewing gum, though I didn't see it. There was no one in for most of our meal, and there might be a reason....

This was a delivery through Hungry Panda. Arrived late and cold. Mean, thin vegetable spring rolls - tiny filling in thick wrapper. Tasteless. Glutinous, tasteless and gooey vegetable dumplings. Hard to believe this came from the restaurant's kitchen - as opposed to subcontracted out. Won't order again.

Have been coming here for many many years but now friend and I live outside London. Today we went for dim sum and whilst the food was fabulous, the service absolutely appalling. One of waiters was so rude I actually almost got up and walked out. He spoke to me like the dirt on his shoe. Absolutely ruined our visit. This is the worst Chinese restaurant I have been to in a long time. I love Chinese food but this was a major disappointment. We started with chicken satay which was inedible and then followed with a sweet and sour dish that could have been anything. The steamed rice was good. The staff were very surly and hovered over out table with the card machine to hurry us out at 9pm- we only arrived at 8pm.Never again.

Last century, we used to gather here (and at the Putney branch, RIP) for large family Sunday dim sum brunches but stopped when they no longer accepted Sunday bookings, which seems to have been a big mistake on their part since they used to be booked out then and are hardly ever busy now. For the last 18 months have been visiting regularly again but don't recognise it from the other reviews. In particular, staff have never been rude but we do not expect friendly, smiling service from Chinese staff. Service is impersonal and brusque except perhaps in the most expensive joints. Cannot help wondering whether that is what at least some reviewers designate as "rude"? If customers react badly to this, staff can respond aggressively. We only come at weekends, when the full dim sum menu is available. Recently, prices here have gone up again (as at most restaurants, since food prices have shot up - according to Which magazine, in the last year or so, many have gone up: from over 25% to double and more) but quality of some ingredients here has also noticeably improved. We also always have our favourite, their excellent crispy shredded beef from the main menu (there is a separate, equally glossy, dim sum menu). Trying their scallops with asparagus main dish for the first time last Sunday, were impressed with the number of scallops provided for £22. We're so pleased the many bad reviews did not put us off coming back here and only sorry that this quality restaurant (at weekends) is not appreciated more. Recommend coming here only at weekends.

The staff were extremely pushy and rude, didn’t make us feel welcome at all. They also charged 12.5% service charge. Food was good but service was bad! Felt love ke we needs to rush all the time can not understand management owners having staff Like this

Rude, obnoxious, worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. Ordered on delivery, half the meal didn’t arrive, unapologetic, told me to wait 60 mins for the other half of the meal and pay a second delivery charge. Wouldn’t listen, cutting me off constantly… absolutely shocking. Should be out of business. I loathe to ever again give these people money.

I wish I’d read the reviews on here before taking my family here for early dinner. We sat down at our table and it took an age before anyone took our order. The waiter when he finally swaggered over to us was abrupt and explained that they would not serve my children any tap water which was so rude . I ordered a pot of Jasmine tea (there was only one size by the look of other tea pots on surrounding tables). The tea came to £9! When the bill arrived it was ludicrously expensive so I checked the details only to discover that it had been hugely inflated vs the menu prices. In addition to the price fiddling, I was kept waiting over 40 minutes for our mains to come out (despite neighboring tables being served their meals and leaving ) which wasn’t easy with kids. No apology from staff. The duck and pancakes I ordered was below average with myself and the table next to mine discovering foreign bits (we thought it was hair) in the plum sauce (gross). The staff still had the audacity to levy at £5.50 service charge. The manager was curt, abrupt and there was no apology for the awful experience, not to mention bill fiddling, caused to my family. I asked for the SC to be removed and he corrected the bill to the prices in for the menu. NEVER EVER going back there again. Hands down worst restaurant experience of my life.

They put nuts in the sauce and didn’t label it on the menu. I have a nut allergy … thanks a bunch guys! Who puts nuts in hoisin sauce

I have lived in Fulham for 24 years and I knew the previous owners… This is a takeaway not a restaurant and nothing more , avoid at all costs if you are looking for a dining experience, this place is a disgrace to Fulham’s amazing and quality driven dining experiences. Food very average, staff rude and atmosphere so disappointing… Do not get ripped off or disappointed here, Fulham has soo much more to offer.

I can't describe how rude the staff and specifically one waiter was. Probably the worst service we have ever encountered. He treated us as if he was doing us a favour serving us. The toilets and downstairs area were so dirty that if I had seen before ordering our meal, I would have left. It used to be a good place but it has gone downhill. Avoid and go to the Baker Street brunch instead.

The staff are as rude as the food is bad. Had to ask for them to turn down the air -con because it was freezing. Got patronised for the rest of the meal. Food came out randomly and was tasteless. Seriously, go someplace else.

Despite all the bad things we have heard from fellow neighbours about this restaurant over the years we have returned to it regularly considering at least its food good. We have all this time put up with its terribly unfriendly staff, over-pricing and mildly irritating...

After waiting 10 mins with the pram in front of their eyes, we have been told that there were no space for the pram even if the room on the back was completely empty.

First issue was trying to book a table a few days in advance saying we don't take bookings for 3 people (why?!) and we would have to chance it on the day by turning up. Well we turned up on Saturday for lunch and the restaurant was pretty much empty. I have been coming here for years and the prices, suddenly have more than doubled. A can of coke or 7UP is £5.50 and it literally turns up as a can that they open at the table. A small bottle of still water is £6 or more. Food also now very expensive...small bowl of seaweed which is basically crispy shredded cabbage is £9. The staff never smile once during the whole meal, they rush the food at you, throw it down on the table and don't tell you what each dish is. The final straw was when we came to ask for one of their small plastic take away pots to take home our left over duck and they said it would be a £1 charge! The cheek of it after our meal for 3 at lunch with no alcohol came to £140! I argued the case that they don't charge people who order a take away £1 a pot but the rude manager wouldn't listen. She is the rudest person I have ever met and she has been working here for years! They automatically add on the tip to the bill which I don't like either and when you pay be card they hide the receipt and pass the card machine with a home screen that says "would you like to add a tip to this bill" which already has a tip added beforehand...robbery! Never coming again despite having been c. 20 times over last 10 years!!!

Bad food, bad service , unpleasant staff (pushing customers literally), just an overall unenjoyable experience...and to top it off opaque bill as it's in chinese, and they charged 5.90 for a coke!

We went for dinner last night at Royal china having been before about 1 year ago. The menu had changed and the waitress was rude when we asked if they could do anything vegetarian for us that was not on the menu. I can understand if the restaurant was busy but there was one table of 4 on a Friday evening at 7.30. She told me there was no call for vegetarian food!!! so make do with what's on the menu. We asked for vegetables in black bean sauce which we have in most chinese restaurants and she said no can do. She told me the manager was not in and would not give me the managers name. She dismissed us and was so rude. We left and she was not bothered. Their loss as we went to another restaurant and had a lovely meal with lots of delicious food.

Avoid this place! Extremely overpriced, small portions and poor food. Staff is incredibly rude. We had a terrible experience at this restaurant, were treated with no respect and left the place feeling very upset.

There aren’t many old school Chinese restaurants left in south west London. But this last bastion of the 1980’s is strangely terrible. It’s places like this that Justify the death of of the old school neighbourhood Chinese. There are still some excellent Chinese restaurants around like the Good Earth. Skip this place unless you are happy to settle for middle of the road tat. Poor effort I’m afraid.

11 de nosotros subimos un sábado y el personal no pudo hacer lo suficiente para nosotros. Si bien la comida aquí no está en la liga de RC Queensway, estuvo bien para el cumpleaños de las abuelas y, aunque costoso (!), Todo se sirvió en el orden correcto y un servicio excelente. Toleraron nuestra tarta de cumpleaños comprada en la tienda, encendieron velas y luego dividieron el pastel en cajas para llevar para nosotros. Cortés. He estado en esta rama dos veces. La primera vez que la camarera tomó mi tarjeta cuando llegó el momento de pagar. Ella regresó y dijo que había sido rechazada, así que usé otra tarjeta. So expensive, we didn’t even have a main course each and the bill for 4 people (no alcohol) came to £170. The walls are filthy and we all left feeling sick.

What a disaster the evening was, we will never go back there again. There was 8 of us and our bill came to over 400pounds. The dishes are overpriced, and the portions are so small that we had to order 3 portions of each dish. The beef in black bean sauce literally had 5 pieces of meat, amidst zillions of onions and green peppers, i counted. We ordered prawn toasties for starters, the first portion came in ten minutes and the others twenty minutes later, just before the mains. Service was also terrible, only one waitress one duty and one guy at the till.

Staff were fine but can’t believe how expensive it was not to mention the service charge. The serving sizes were small too. Food is OK but not worth the price.

When this was questioned to the senior waiter, I was told a gratuity is different from a tip! Also it was not his job to answer my concerns. Overall value was poor - will not revisit

Average food, massively overpriced, tiny portions and the staff were rude. Kept coming over and interrupting us mid conversation, and leaning over us to get things off the table. Didn't greet me when I walked in. Ignored us when we asked for the bill. I'd go further into London for a better quality of food and service that isn't quite as surly.

Went there on my own last night13/02/2019) only two other Diners soon found out why.

We took a walk in table for 2 hoping for an enjoyable experience to celebrate Chinese New Year. Should have stayed at home with a takeaway. The dishes were poor and arrived at different times. Do you eat your rice whilst it’s warm waiting for your duck which then also arrives cold. A small side of Pak Choi for £16. Won’t be going back.

I’ve eaten here many times but never when it’s busy. Lunchtime yesterday was horrific, families with children are stuffed in an annexe because they are noisy - I witnessed a hysterical exchange where the lady in front of me told the waitress ‘my children are 10’ to which she replied ‘aha so they are teenagers you can sit here’ before pointing at my 4 year old and asking if that was her child. My rice arrived and we separated it onto the plates and waited for the lemon chicken for 20 minutes. When it arrived I asked for fresh rice as it was cold but the waiter refused and said he’d microwave it. We’d started eating the rice a little as hungry and he tried to put it back in the bowl with all the other rice to warm up. When I said ‘no, we’ll keep it’ he was aggressive and said ‘what can I do’ and walked off. Very disappointing as I am a regular and the food is otherwise good.

Royal China Fulham is the scene of the most bizarrely bad customer service experience of my life. We live locally and came as a family of 5 for a post Xmas dinner. The food was mostly good but service haphazard and arrogant.

A true classic, just nestled in fulham. We have been coming here as a family for years. Great service, great food and very fresh.

Probably the worst restaurant we have ever been to. My wife and I suffered food poisoning. We agree with the other reviews about extortionate prices for really poor food, appalling service, dirty tables, dirty chairs, dirty waitresses, unbelievably rude staff.

If there is a choice I would have given this resturant a zero star. I rarely leave comments for any shops/restaurants, but today's experience with Royal China Fulham was just truly awful. It has been 3 hours since I left the resturant and I am still feeling angry now.

Was there today and enjoyed the food - got the bill and ...,gulp... the Broccoli was £15.50!!! Anyone who likes broccoli should be advised

Could not believe the prices . £9 for a glass of white wine in a chinese !!!! Asked for more pancakes for duck ( u only get 2 each ) charged £3 extra . Paid 13% gratuity then on the card machine it asks for another one yes or no ! Bill was £ 114 for 2 adults and one kid . No wonder the place was empty . My advise is do not bother . This experience was a chore and not a treat !

Please, do not go here. I live locally and thought I’d give this restaurant a try (even though I read the bad reviews) What I experienced was over priced, tiny portions and grumpy service.

Serviced was rushed. Food was average and did not justify the price. Dumplings tasted like rubber and frozen. Avoid this restaurant.

Great dim sum chosen by my friend. Great choice and all full of flavour. Would definitely go back. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere.

The Dim Sum in Guangzhou, China, near the school, has two halls and open-air areas that are quiet and comfortable. We have chosen a window-side location. We haven't eaten such authentic Chinese food for a long time. The menu code here is rich, and I can eat meat with great enthusiasm!

There are not many Cantonese-style restaurants in London that can enjoy authentic Chinese food. There is a saying in Chinese folk:? Why does “Eating in Guangzhou” claim to be “food in Guangzhou” in many Chinese cuisines? If you try it, you will know it.

I have visited a couple of times and the service was never good - but now it has sunk to new depths. It’s a nightmare experience as it’s a minimum charge of £20 for a quick Dimsum. I was alone and I had to order far too much food and the rude waitress was reluctant to let me take away. I will never be going back there.

I took guests for a dim sum lunch. About a quarter of an hour after our orders were placed, the waitress and manager came over to say that I had not ordered enough - there was a minimum order of £20 per person for dim sum. Most reluctantly I ordered more dishes that we did not want, to meet the requirement. The food took another half an hour to start arriving. When the bill came it was for £63 including a 'recommended gratuity' of £7.50. I presented my debit card for payment and was asked did I want to pay a gratuity I said 'No'. The bill still came out at £63 - Royal China was trying to extract yet more money from me. I have had excellent dim sum in Soho for a third of the price. This was a total rip-off and an experience that embarrassed me with my guests. A broken lavatory seat was a fitting finale. Never again!

I feel lucky that i found such a magic restaurant in fulham finally cause the dim sum here is so gorgeous and so is the main dish,it is traditonal and the best taste really,as i have been to the other branches.

Pop para una cena informal ayer y eran totalmente asombrado por la comida! Albóndigas de cerdo Shanghai son extremadamente delicioso. Sin duda volvería para más dim sum un día. Probado unos pocos en el menú especial del chef, bastante decente. El servicio está bien aunque, no como horrible como algunos de los comentarios en el mismo. El personal es muy servicial con todo. Ebt el precio es un poco alto, pero definitivamente vale la pena cada céntimo.

If only we'd read the hideous reviews of this place before we went... The food itself wasn't bad which is why it's such a shame that the appalling manageress singlehandedly lets this place down, as well as the obscene prices and a distinct feeling you've been conned at the end of the evening. We were charged £4 for prawn crackers. We'd have let that go but when we noticed the £4 price tag on the thimble of Diet Coke we were given (honestly, a mouse would've asked if they were taking the mick, it was such a small glass), we queried it and well, all hell broke loose! Enter the infamous manageress from hell mentioned in most of these reviews. This woman is angry. Very very angry, with life, with herself, with someone who has wronged her, who knows, but boy, she wants you and seemingly every customer in her sights to know it! The abuse she hurled at us loudly over the pram of our tiny sleeping newborn baby was astounding, I think I'm still in shock. We got a right Royal bollocking for not having noticed the drinks prices would make Mahiki's beverages look like freebies. And once she'd shouted how disgusting we were for querying the prices and stormed off leaving us in stunned silence, she decided it would be an epic idea to come back for more. But this time with strong hand gestures thrown in for good measure. This is when we got angry and refused to pay for the drinks on principal. This caused her to almost explode and I genuinely felt a bit scared and like things may be about to get physical. She took off the price of the drinks with all the grace of a graceless angry woman who shouldn't be in management, or around humans. Then came back one more time for some shouty shouty action to ensure we knew how naughty we'd been. With a newborn next to us we decided to pay and flee as we felt extremely stressed and nervous by now. I've actually never seen anything quite like it. Honestly, with the £20 spend I'm reading about in other reviews, this place really is to be avoided if you prefer your nights out to involve not being conned or shouted at. Shame as the food was ok. The people that run the Royal China chain desperately need to read these reviews, spot the common themes and do something about it if they want to stay in business.

Mi marido es medio chino, así que comer dim sum regularmente, pero esta fue la primera y última vez que visite este restaurante. A la llegada de la señorita que parecía estar a cargo era muy abrupto como ella nos enseñó a nuestra mesa. Pedimos unas bebidas y procedieron a probar y pedir nuestra comida con la camarera. Después de haber dado su nuestros pedidos inmediatamente nos dijo que no había pedido y que hay suficiente una nueva política de pasar un minuto £20 por persona (incluyendo bebés y niños pequeños menores de 1). Mi hijo de 3 años estaba durmiendo en el cochecito en el tiempo, y mencioné que era dudoso que él me levanté a tiempo para el almuerzo, pero me dijeron que el minuto pasar para nuestra familia de 4 era 80 libras y que teníamos que pedir esta cantidad de una vez por todas, de lo contrario no sería capaz de procesar nuestra orden. Shocking rip off, yes the food was okay but nothing special. £7 for a beer, £31 for a bottle of red that would be £5 in a shop, the girls on a table opposite were charged £11 for broccoli. On top of this 12.5% service charge for average service at best, then when the credit card machine came round it asked you to add a tip! When we told them this was unacceptable they said “sorry it is a new machine and not programmed”. Yea, right. This used to be the best Chinese for miles around, now it has plumbed the depths, what planet are you guys on? How to ruin what was a decent business. Do not go there. Ever.

We had been to this place a couple of times in the past for dim-sum and really enjoyed our meals there. I checked TripAdvisor when we decided to go there again this evening and saw the recent negative comments, but still gave it a chance for the sake of the good old days. It broke out the minute we entered in! The waitress at the door immediately told us that we had the spend twenty pounds each. I was very surprised to hear such a thing even before we were seated. It was a very rude welcome! When she saw me so startled, she repeated the same thing adding that being two persons we had to spend forty pounds minimum, thanks for the clarification! Finally, we were seated once I confirmed that we would spend the minimum required! My fifteen year old son was also very surprised because of such an attitude. We ordered five dishes and I made a quick calculation, and they did cost more than forty, but the waitress (the same one) was not satisfied and told me that it was not enough food for two and that we had to order more! And I was very furious from that point on...She was so bossy and impolite! I replied that we would order more if required. And honestly, I had no more appetite because of her attitude and should have left the place, but instead tried to stay calm not to disappoint my son. There was another waiter who seated the customers who arrived after us and he did not tell them about the minimum spending as our waitress did to us as a precondition. This made me even more upset... I asked for the bill when we finished and it was 55.50£ with the 13% recommended gratuity. On purpose I paid 55£ cash when I saw that the same waitress came to collect it. She checked the bill and asked me to pay 50 p. more and I replied that I wouldn’t because it was 55.50£ with the “recommended” gratuity and I preferred to pay less than that. This time she was surprised and I had to repeat it a couple of times. In fact, I did not want to pay any gratuity whatsoever because she ruined my evening, but I did not want to punish the other staff working in the restaurant. Overall, it was not the food or anything else, but the behavior of a single employee that ruined our experience at Royal China. I would never ever step in that restaurant again!

Been coming here for many years. Came for New Year’s Day dim sum. This year wasn’t able to book a table due new table Res policy. Knowing it’s historic popularity we were surprised to turn up with 10 people and get seated without delay . Should have read that as a warning sign. Where once there were linen tablecloths now there are none. Where once there were linen serviettes now they are paper. Waitress was on the hard sell, encouraging scaling up on dishes, bottled instead of tap water. Dishes smaller than previous visits. Charging for tiny bowls of chilli oil and sauce. Bill came with 13% service charge which they refused to reduce. It appears that new management are wringing this restaurants neck to maximise profit -however, at a cost to the quality and dining experience. None of us will return. I see other reviewers here agree.
