First visit back after 3 years. For nearly 30 years the family enjoyed lunch at the Royal China in Putney (RIP) and then, less frequently, in Fulham on Sundays. We gave up when they no longer accepted bookings on Sundays; also, over the decades, our numbers dwindled, one way or another … This visit was on a Monday lunchtime, our least preferred day as the better kitchen staff are all off after the busy weekend, but it was a birthday meal.Even though this place closed down for months due to the plandemic, no effort appears to have been made to spruce it up; it’s still just as shabby and run down. This lunchtime, the few diners were 2 Chinese men each dining alone, a Western man dining alone and us. We ignored the main menu because those cooked-to-order dishes are disappointing on Mondays. The dim sum menu used to be impressively large but has now shrunk to a flimsy little piece of paper listing just 18 savoury dim sum and 3 sweet ones, with prices. You tick the little boxes along the right hand column and hand it over to the waitstaff. Dim sum has always been mostly bought in and was good quality - as they should be, given current pricing. All dim sum are much more expensive than 3 years ago: 3 prawn and chive dumplings are £6.80, the turnip cakes with cured meats are now £5.20 (from £3.70, a leap of over 40%), the small, flat, crispy sesame prawn rolls an eye-watering £7.80 (£2.60 each or over £1 per bite). Jasmine tea was £2.50 per person. Service was impersonal, as usual, but not hostile as mentioned in some reviews. (Our suggestion is to laugh loudly among yourselves at any hostility, anything else just gratifies bullies.) The bill is now digitised, with names and prices individually listed and a 13% “gratuity" added.

Royal China in Fulham used to be very famous for their roast pork puffs, however they are no longer of the same quality, and the quality is in fact many times worse! The pastries were soggy and almost felt like uncooked. They are purely salty without much taste. Very disappointing. Other dim sum dishes we ordered were all the same - just purely very salty. They also seem to prefer to hire arrogant and rude managers. In the past the manager/ head waitress was super rude to customers and now this manager/ head waitress has the same traits, no smile, and very rude when we asked for some eating bowls (we sat down for 10 mins and were not given any bowls). The rest of the staff were however ok. Why do they insist on hiring rude managers?Food was very overpriced compared to many dim sum restaurants in London and the quality was worse. The choice of dim sum was also very limited compared to an average dim sum restaurant. If you really want a proper dim sum meal, go slightly further to South Kensington or even better to Chinatown where you won’t have the same disappointing experience.

Shockingly poor. They constantly, and I mean constantly screw up. Bewarned, they WILL screw up your order, they will miss out items you've ordered, they WILL give you the wrong dishes. They ARE an utter disgrace to the Royal China group. Royal China used to be good. Queensway still is, Baker St patchy, but Fulham is so bad as to be an insult to those employed in the same group at the other restaurants

. No voy a volver

Given the string of bad reviews on Tripadvisor we were apprehensive about taking dim sum at Royal China in Fulham but apart from wasting time trying to book a table on line and then following up with a phone call to find out that bookings aren't taken for Sunday lunch, the rest of the experience was absolutely fine. Our family group of four were shown straight to a table, service was quick, polite and helpful. The menu was OK and the dim sum tasty. In addition to the standard dim sum I fancied a chicken and mushroom soup, which proved to be rather bland but that was the only blip. The decor wasn't very exciting so it's not a place I would visit to dine, but for dim sum this was fine, although maybe a little bit pricey. Nevertheless, I'd go back.

Post Xmas we could not be bothered to drive into town and opted to have a family dinner at the Fulham branch of Royal China. This was a mistake. The place is like something out of the 1980s but prices are definitely 21st century. The menu is limited and prices are high for what was on offer for a suburban restaurant . We were initially told that they were serving dim sum in the evening. We asked for some veggie dim sum. We asked if their chicken was kosher or halal and were informed that it was not. A little while later the waitress came back and offered us pork dim sum stating that as it just after the Xmas break they did only had pork - despite us asking if their chicken was kosher! We ordered soup and selection of starters and our main course. Once the starters arrived I ordered a Diet Coke. The waitress the proceeded to say It would cost £5.50 for a can and was that okay. I have never been more insulted before for staff to ask me if it was going to ok to pay for a drink as if I could not afford it. She did not ask other people if they could afford their wine or beer so why ask me about my coke? This was clearly racist behaviour of the ethnic staff. When you go out to a restaurant and order food for over £150 then you don’t consider the price of drinks do you? No apology was offered for the way I was asked about whether I could afford the extortionate price for a simple can of Coke, which the waitress brought to the table! The food arrived and we had our soup. The plate of 7 small prawns in a chilly Sauce was ok. The crispy noodles with mixed veg was over seasoned. The wife then ordered some noodles with beansprouts. The first version that came to table had a burnt taste and had to be sent back it was inedible. Again no apology was offered. By the time the second version came nobody had any appetite to eat it even with the small portions served. It’s not as if the restaurant was full and the kitchen busy for a Friday night at 8pm. The soup bowls were very small too. We asked for it to be packed and not that we were charged £1 for this service. They had the audacity to want to charge a service charge and additional tip for a credit card payment. We refused to pay those additional charges for the lack of service and rude unhelpful staff. Im not going to be going back to this place anytime soon. It’s resting on the laurels of its bigger brethren in Baker Street. Avoid this place and look for some better place in the neighbourhood.

Despite all the bad things we have heard from fellow neighbours about this restaurant over the years we have returned to it regularly considering at least its food good. We have all this time put up with its terribly unfriendly staff, over-pricing and mildly irritating policy of trying to add service charge both to the bill and then again at card payment, as we like to support local businesses. We took another family there last week who pointed out that the double portion of special rice ordered by one person was smaller than the single portion ordered by another and so small in fact, that it could not possibly be costing £11.80 (the price of a single portion) times two. We pointed this error out to the staff who instead of engaging with what was staring us all clearly in the face, refused to discuss it, became incredibly rude, even more so than usual, and then turned their backs on us! Their attitude was so shocking after so much support from us over the years. Not to mention embarrassing that we had chosen this restaurant to introduce to another family, so blinkered we must have become to the growing lack of professionality of the staff. No idea how they have got away with such an appauling attitude for so long, it can only be thanks to deluded customers like us, but this was really the last straw and we shall never be returning again.

First issue was trying to book a table a few days in advance saying we don't take bookings for 3 people (why?!) and we would have to chance it on the day by turning up. Well we turned up on Saturday for lunch and the restaurant was pretty much empty. I have been coming here for years and the prices, suddenly have more than doubled. A can of coke or 7UP is £5.50 and it literally turns up as a can that they open at the table. A small bottle of still water is £6 or more. Food also now very expensive...small bowl of seaweed which is basically crispy shredded cabbage is £9. The staff never smile once during the whole meal, they rush the food at you, throw it down on the table and don't tell you what each dish is. The final straw was when we came to ask for one of their small plastic take away pots to take home our left over duck and they said it would be a £1 charge! The cheek of it after our meal for 3 at lunch with no alcohol came to £140! I argued the case that they don't charge people who order a take away £1 a pot but the rude manager wouldn't listen. She is the rudest person I have ever met and she has been working here for years! They automatically add on the tip to the bill which I don't like either and when you pay be card they hide the receipt and pass the card machine with a home screen that says "would you like to add a tip to this bill" which already has a tip added beforehand...robbery! Never coming again despite having been c. 20 times over last 10 years!!!

We went for dinner last night at Royal china having been before about 1 year ago. The menu had changed and the waitress was rude when we asked if they could do anything vegetarian for us that was not on the menu. I can understand if the restaurant was busy but there was one table of 4 on a Friday evening at 7.30. She told me there was no call for vegetarian food!!! so make do with what's on the menu. We asked for vegetables in black bean sauce which we have in most chinese restaurants and she said no can do. She told me the manager was not in and would not give me the managers name. She dismissed us and was so rude. We left and she was not bothered. Their loss as we went to another restaurant and had a lovely meal with lots of delicious food.

I’ve eaten here many times but never when it’s busy. Lunchtime yesterday was horrific, families with children are stuffed in an annexe because they are noisy - I witnessed a hysterical exchange where the lady in front of me told the waitress ‘my children are 10’ to which she replied ‘aha so they are teenagers you can sit here’ before pointing at my 4 year old and asking if that was her child. My rice arrived and we separated it onto the plates and waited for the lemon chicken for 20 minutes. When it arrived I asked for fresh rice as it was cold but the waiter refused and said he’d microwave it. We’d started eating the rice a little as hungry and he tried to put it back in the bowl with all the other rice to warm up. When I said ‘no, we’ll keep it’ he was aggressive and said ‘what can I do’ and walked off. Very disappointing as I am a regular and the food is otherwise good.

Me gusta apoyar negocios locales. About a quarter of an hour after our orders were placed, the waitress and manager came over to say that I had not ordered enough - there was a minimum order of £20 per person for dim sum. Most reluctantly I ordered more dishes that we did not want, to meet the requirement. The food took another half an hour to start arriving. When the bill came it was for £63 including a 'recommended gratuity' of £7.50. I presented my debit card for payment and was asked did I want to pay a gratuity I said 'No'. The bill still came out at £63 - Royal China was trying to extract yet more money from me. I have had excellent dim sum in Soho for a third of the price. This was a total rip-off and an experience that embarrassed me with my guests. A broken lavatory seat was a fitting finale. Never again!

We were charged £4 for prawn crackers. We'd have let that go but when we noticed the £4 price tag on the thimble of Diet Coke we were given (honestly, a mouse would've asked if they were taking the mick, it was such a small glass), we queried it and well, all hell broke loose! Enter the infamous manageress from hell mentioned in most of these reviews. This woman is angry. Very very angry, with life, with herself, with someone who has wronged her, who knows, but boy, she wants you and seemingly every customer in her sights to know it! The abuse she hurled at us loudly over the pram of our tiny sleeping newborn baby was astounding, I think I'm still in shock. We got a right Royal bollocking for not having noticed the drinks prices would make Mahiki's beverages look like freebies. And once she'd shouted how disgusting we were for querying the prices and stormed off leaving us in stunned silence, she decided it would be an epic idea to come back for more. But this time with strong hand gestures thrown in for good measure. This is when we got angry and refused to pay for the drinks on principal. This caused her to almost explode and I genuinely felt a bit scared and like things may be about to get physical. She took off the price of the drinks with all the grace of a graceless angry woman who shouldn't be in management, or around humans. Then came back one more time for some shouty shouty action to ensure we knew how naughty we'd been. With a newborn next to us we decided to pay and flee as we felt extremely stressed and nervous by now. I've actually never seen anything quite like it. Honestly, with the £20 spend I'm reading about in other reviews, this place really is to be avoided if you prefer your nights out to involve not being conned or shouted at. Shame as the food was ok. The people that run the Royal China chain desperately need to read these reviews, spot the common themes and do something about it if they want to stay in business.

We had been to this place a couple of times in the past for dim-sum and really enjoyed our meals there. I checked TripAdvisor when we decided to go there again this evening and saw the recent negative comments, but still gave it a chance for the sake of the good old days. It broke out the minute we entered in! The waitress at the door immediately told us that we had the spend twenty pounds each. I was very surprised to hear such a thing even before we were seated. It was a very rude welcome! When she saw me so startled, she repeated the same thing adding that being two persons we had to spend forty pounds minimum, thanks for the clarification! Finally, we were seated once I confirmed that we would spend the minimum required! My fifteen year old son was also very surprised because of such an attitude. We ordered five dishes and I made a quick calculation, and they did cost more than forty, but the waitress (the same one) was not satisfied and told me that it was not enough food for two and that we had to order more! And I was very furious from that point on...She was so bossy and impolite! I replied that we would order more if required. And honestly, I had no more appetite because of her attitude and should have left the place, but instead tried to stay calm not to disappoint my son. There was another waiter who seated the customers who arrived after us and he did not tell them about the minimum spending as our waitress did to us as a precondition. This made me even more upset... I asked for the bill when we finished and it was 55.50£ with the 13% recommended gratuity. On purpose I paid 55£ cash when I saw that the same waitress came to collect it. She checked the bill and asked me to pay 50 p. more and I replied that I wouldn’t because it was 55.50£ with the “recommended” gratuity and I preferred to pay less than that. This time she was surprised and I had to repeat it a couple of times. In fact, I did not want to pay any gratuity whatsoever because she ruined my evening, but I did not want to punish the other staff working in the restaurant. Overall, it was not the food or anything else, but the behavior of a single employee that ruined our experience at Royal China. I would never ever step in that restaurant again!

Knowing it’s historic popularity we were surprised to turn up with 10 people and get seated without delay . Should have read that as a warning sign. Where once there were linen tablecloths now there are none. Where once there were linen serviettes now they are paper. Waitress was on the hard sell, encouraging scaling up on dishes, bottled instead of tap water. Dishes smaller than previous visits. Charging for tiny bowls of chilli oil and sauce. Bill came with 13% service charge which they refused to reduce. It appears that new management are wringing this restaurants neck to maximise profit -however, at a cost to the quality and dining experience. None of us will return. I see other reviewers here agree.

After going to the Royal China in Putney for the last 10 years, I was thoroughly appalled by the service and food that we received when my family and I went to the Fulham Road restaurant last week. I have never experienced such rudeness from the waiting staff and manager, as well as the food coming out cold and portion sizes smaller. After receiving the bill (which came to over £150 for a few starters and a few mains) I was shocked to see that they had still charged us £20 for service charge. I will never be going back to the Royal China again and will advise that people do not go there as it is a very unpleasant experience and not worth the money they charge.

My family started going to the Royal China over 15 years ago when it was in Putney. It was our favourite restaurant and we went there for every family birthday celebration. It was a sad day for us when it closed down but we continued to support the new branch in Fulham. Last night we went to the Fulham branch for my son's 22nd birthday and we were so shocked by the whole experience, particularly given the excellent reputation of the Queensway restaurant. Sadly, we will never go there ever again. It was appalling. The food was not up to the usual standard we have come to expect, it was over priced and the portions much smaller than normal. But the worst part of the evening was with regards to an unfortunate misunderstanding with the waitress and the manager's cowardice in refusing to handle the situation. We ordered duck with pancakes to start (a whole one as there were 5 of us). When it arrived it wasn't what we thought we had ordered. It was Peking Duck but we were expecting Crispy Aromatic Duck which is what we always have. The waitress didn't ask us whether we wanted Peking or Crispy Aromatic Duck and we weren't aware that there were two different types of duck with pancakes. She just assumed we wanted Peking Duck. When we said that this wasn't the duck we thought we had ordered she got very defensive as she realised her mistake in not checking when she took the order and tried to convince us that we had ordered Peking Duck and that it was our fault. We said we didn't want the Peking Duck and asked her whether she could exchange it for Crispy Aromatic Duck. She went to the back of the restaurant to consult the manager and eventually told us that we couldn't have Crispy Aromatic Duck and if we didn't want the Peking Duck she would take it away and just bring us our main dishes. We asked her to clarify whether we would still be charged for it. Again, she went to consult the Manager and came back to say that yes we would be charged for it. At that point, we asked to speak to the Manager personally. She went off to speak to him and came back to say that it wasn't possible to speak to the Manager. When we asked her why not, she panicked and said that he had suddenly gone out. We knew this wasn't true because we could see his reflection in the mirror so knew that he was hiding at the back of the restaurant. We said we would wait for the manager to return so she went off to speak to him again and came back to say that we didn't have to pay for the duck after all and that she would bring the rest of the dishes. To add insult to injury, three well dressed Chinese people then came into the restaurant and sat at the table next to us and suddenly the Manager appeared by their side (even though we had been told he had gone out). This was the first time he had been front of house all evening. Maybe they were friends of his but he was overly attentive towards them and even took their order! He completely ignored us.Then, the final straw was when the bill came and a £20 service charge had been added to our extortionate £150 bill (for 3 starters, 5 small main courses, 3 portions of rice, 1 portion of vegetables and some noodles, 4 cokes and a pot of jasmine tea (if they had charged us for the duck it would have been an extra £45).I emailed the company's head office about the situation but I have heard nothing apart from an automatic response acknowledging receipt of my email. Sadly, if this is their attitude to customer service then I do not think the Fulham branch will be open for business much longer given the number of other loyal customers (according to the reviews on TripAdvisor) they have driven away.

I've been going to The Royal China since it first opened in Queensway, and go to this outpost in the Fulham Road 3-4 times a year, and each time of late I left regretting going in the first place. At one time the Dim-Sum was heralded as the best in Europe, and while it is still good in that area, the rest is dismal, betraying a chain that is both overpriced and resting on its laurels. Three dim sum dishes, three cokes and a potion of beef of noodles came to £40. That is ridiculous. Especially when the beef noodle was vile. Chewy cuts of steak swimming in a thick gloopy, overly brandied gravy, with three wilted stems of broccoli that looked a week old. Despite leaving this dish after barely a few mouthfuls, the waitress couldn't have cared less as to why an entire dish had been left. The bill came - with a 13pc tip added, and then they did that thing that infuriates all diners, provide a chip and pin machine that asked for yet another tip! I cannot believe restaurants still do this. But I think what angered me most of all was the three cokes. Served in tiny glasses half filled with ice, these came from 150ml cans and were £3.80 each. That values coke the same as a decent wine.

I dined at Royal China in Fulham last Saturday and was utterly disappointed by the overall experience. Upon arrival, we ordered two bottles of beer, the only beer available we were told, without even looking at the menu. In the course of the dinner, we ordered another one and had to ask for tap water repetitively, which comes only in glasses. The menu choice is restricted at dinner and there are no dim sums available - while they are advertised in the menu outside. The only dim sum option is the pork one, with 5 dumplings for £15.00. All the other items on the menu are plain simple Chinese staples but have the price tag of what you pay in much more upmarket Chinese environments. We had crispy duck and noodles with seafood, which were absolutely fine, but hardly memorable. The disappointment comes with the bill: each (small) beer was £7.00, plus service charge. And when we paid by card, we were asked if we wanted to add a further tip, after we got already charged for the service. It is something quite rude asking for money twice, especially as it doesn't happen in most restaurants when there is a compulsory charge. Needless to say, I will not go back.

Sadly, after much excitement in booking our favourite Chinese in London our disappointments only flowed from rather unfriendly service to freezing cold plates (not only the ones we were eating off but also the ones the food was served on). On previous visits we have been greeted by staff and welcomed the huge portions we used to be given (which made the price acceptable). Now, the portions are half the size and the price hasn't changed to match this. Two portions of 'special rice', was probably enough to feed one of us and there was certainly nothing special about it, especially not at approx. £25 for the 2 portion serving! Won't be going back following this terrible experience.

First dim sum arrived, then suddenly the main dish hit the table. Dim sum are supposed to be served first. No explanation, no apology. Same tough manager. Dim Sum items began to arrive - very slowly. Obliged to start the main dish before it got cold. By the end we felt that a series of good dishes had been spoiled by unfriendly service and erratic timing. Also ordered our favourites, all excellent:- sea bass with ginger and spring onions- roast duck - crispy chilli beef (so hard to find this done well). The restaurant had emptied out by 2pm and customers arriving then did not have to queue, although there is always a queue then on Sundays (by contrast. nearby Sukho always seems to be empty at lunchtimes, possibly because it is more expensive - although Royal China is not cheap, the dim sum is not really more expensive than in Chinese restaurants in Bayswater and Soho).
