Pennycook Takeaway in Midlothian

Food took over an hour and a half to arrive, we only live a 15 min drive away. When we phoned they said it was a missed receipt - we asked if we could have a refund or even partial refund but said no refund or compensation. Absolute rubbish service. Won’t be ordering from here again.

Such a shame as this is usually a really good chippy! Daughter and I had carbonara pasta and neither of us could eat it-so dry!!! Mine had a total of three bits of ham in it! Worst pasta I’ve ever had! Stick to the chippy side!

Just started ordering from here. The first 2 orders were amazing got pizzas and was so nice. But wee just placed a order today and ordered a donner meat pizza my partner got a pasta. The pasta wasn't fully cooked and the sauce was so bland no flavour what so ever. The pizza wasn't nice at all donner meat had a funny taste and was greasy. So dissapointing as wee had 2 amazing orders before. Such a shame when you spend 31 pound on a order to get thrown in the bin

The food is great, they’ve got a massive variety of options to choose from and I’d say it’s a high standard of food HOWEVER (this may sounds stupid because it’s a fish and chip place) but I ordered a cheese pizza with a doner kebab (neither include any fish) and when the food came, the outer packaging STUNK of fish. The actual cheese pizza STUNK of fish. I had to throw the bag in the hallway it was making me feel nauseous (I don’t like the smell of fish) and then when I was eating the pizza there was a fishy after taste … really put me off the entire thing and ended up binning the lot of it. Could have complained about it but the food is usually to a high standard so I’m not going to grumble if one order isn’t good. But yeah the smell of fish was actually making me feel ill.

Ordered a takeaway recently. Never have I ever had a Chinese takeaway, which consisted of mainly soggy frozen vegetables (even the onions) fried rice was stodgy and everything tasteless. Chicken in the dish was stringy. Not a good experience. Pity as the Food Lodge used to be the best takeaway in Penicuik.

The food is either 10 minutes early or 30 minutes late. Never anything else.

Got 2 donor wraps meat was amazing meat cut really thin with no grizel in it couldnt ask for any better Texan wrap was really good only thing is chilli on it could have been abit spicer Will definitely be coming back to the pennycook

This place needs a serious revamping of how they prepare and make their food. In comparison to every other fish and chips place I've been to this is by far on the lowest end. The batter of the fish is very cakey, the ratio is very wrong with mostly batter and not enough fish it's very unpleasant. I have ordered numerous times but I have never had a satisfying meal from them. I would love to see this place make a turn around, but I cannot in all good conscience recommend this place to anyone when there are far better options to go to. I wish the best for this place, but my rating reflects how much work they have to do to regain their footing in the fish and chips market.

Just received a Kebab which was awful, chicken was burned and a Sad excuse for a salad! Wouldn’t even feed it to my dog waste of money.

This must be the worst fish and chips takeaway I've had,delivery was fast,we've used this takeaway before and usually ok,but tonight I think the fish must have cooked and reheated,could not be eaten,I won't be back.

Nice, clean takeaway. The staff are friendly, the food is good and it's reasonably priced.

Ordered takeaways online. Pleased with efficient service - they were ready when we got there, saved us waiting. However when we got home I was disappointed the fish especially had an unpleasant taste of possibly cheap animal fat. Others in the family said they enjoyed theirs. The person who ordered the Scotsman’s pizza enjoyed it. But I don’t think I’ll go back.

They have a pretty great fish and chips but I wanted to check out the kebab and was incredibly disappointed. The ‘big’ mixed kebab was a pita the size of my hand and came with no salad at all even though I requested one. The garlic mayo was also just mayo. I tried calling the restaurant multiple times and kept getting hanged up on.

High price for small portions & food is greasy

I have had a pizza out here a few times and the pizza was good but tonight I ordered a large mixed Kebab and it came in individual containers for you to build it yourself but the wrap it came with was very small and could not hold much meat in it at all. I was disappointed with it tbh. I expected it to come pre made.

Once a great chippy, now utterly dire.

Use to love this place and have spent a decent bit since I moved to penicuik but that will be last time I order from their tower will be my go to now last 3 times got my order wrong n sent a smoked sausage and that sorry excuse of lettuce have had it for me I'm at the barracks aswell so woll loose more than just me

I had called to ask what oil they use and if their fish is fried in the same oil as meats. Upon request they happily fried our fish separately. My family were super happy with their service, the food and overall being accommodating to our needs. We will definitely be going back! 🍟

Have ordered food from here on several occasions and never disappoints. I particularly love the fish, crisp, light batter with beautiful quality fish. You can tell the oil is really clean as the food never leaves that heavy feeling. Nice, cheerful delivery person too!

Just moved to Penicuik and went in here for a fish supper during moving process and sadly was not impressed, fish and chips were very heavy with grease and felt off after eating, will now have to go further if wanting some fish and chips. Gave it 3 stars as staff were very lovley.

Penne roberto burns is unreal, can’t fault it, Mac n cheese, very cheesy and flavourful, children thoroughly enjoyed it, very pleased, portion size 1 mixed between 2 kids and there was still left overs, delivery very quick and driver Simone was very lovely, was very patient with me while I found my card, exceptional customer service over the phone aswell, well done the pennycook

This place has went downhill and no longer cares about the taste, pasta was stuck together, the sauce was curdled and was more like bits of scrambled egg stuck to the pasta rather than coated in sauce, pizza was undercooked and both arrived lukewarm at best, shame as this used to be a nice place.

Worst kebab I have ever had. Pitt's bread was rock soiled. The meat was chewy. Banoffee pie cream was off. At least the tiny salad was edible :-(

Terrible. So overpriced. Chip roll was soggy. Ordered profiteroles for £4.50 and 3 tiny ones were delivered in a tub. Called to query and told that’s normal. Honestly this used to be a good chippy but the prices and portion sizes are ridiculous! Won’t be ordering again.

Shame this used to be a good take away in Penicuik. Ordered a large kabab and it came in home made peta bread not a fan of it. Should stick to the normal chippy style. The fish supper is well over priced and portion's are small now. Shame I did like it before.

Best Chicken Pakora around. Rest of their food is great too. 👍

Excellent food and quality fish supper

The greatest takeout I've ever had; the special fish is excellent and the attention to detail is perfect; lovely box; a slice of lemon; tartar sauce; like in a restaurant; service is always exceptional; friendly and quick; and top of the tops: the pistacchio ice cream!

I mean how can you go wrong with chips and cheese, freezing cold chips and a scraping of cheese no where near enough cheese considering the £2 jump from a portion of chips,sons pizza was okay but fiancé chips were the same as mine terrible....

Really disappointed with our delivery. Portion sizes not worth the money you would be better having a full little box than the mean Portion in the big boxes. Juice was warm.

Never get on order right. Or on time. Regularly deliver and forget things. Brought cake which they put on top of hot food which melted. Quality has wildly decreased.

Was not a fresh Carbonara uneaten it takes 15 to 20 minutes it was here in 10 .no refund wont be ordering for there again .

Used to be really good quailty and enjoyed going here but recently it has gone downhill. We ordered £4.50 Profiteroles and only 3 tiny ones arrived. This is their serving size. Incredibly overpriced for what you get. The pizzas always arrive burnt, and was missing ingredients we'd paid extra for. Chips were also missing from this order. 😕 shame as it used to be good.

Visiting my brother and on the way home stopped in for a fish supper. God, it was the worst supper I have ever experienced, one bite of the fish and two chips and threw the rest out of the window. Place used to be good but, it’s went downhill badly. Absolute rubbish

Last couple of orders have been very disappointing. Chips were soft, like they've been taken out too quickly. King Rib wasn't nice and my son did not like his hamburger supper at all. Definitely feels like the quality is going downhill I'm afraid. With little competition in Penicuik there's probably not much incentive for them to be a really good chippy like they have been in the past.

Usually I’m impressed with the pennycook, however tonight part of the order was missing. Tried for over 15 mins to get through but phone constantly engaged, hopefully Just eat will refund what was missing.

Food was really poor today. Chilli chips that were inedible, more chilli flakes and powder than chips. Penne picante that was bland. The pizza had what looked like a full bag of rocket on it, and wasn’t sliced.

Best burger in Penicuik - bar none!! Husband previously had a chicken schwarma kebab and wasn’t impressed but tonight’s takeaway fully reinstated his faith in the Pennycook’s food and service - we loved it! Thanks guys

Far too long to wait for chips and cheesecake I understand can be busy but hour and half and it was freezing cold when we got it no impressed

Usually not too bad ordered last night and order was read back to us to confirm , order arrived and you should not have to open boxes to confirm , opened up and not what we ordered, more hassle than it was worth to return and all went in the bin , will NOT be ordering again

Order was late and all cold. Pizza was swimming in bbq base sauce and not enjoyable.

Always impressed with Pennycook, the food is good quality not greasy and arrives hot. The service both over phone and at door step are always excellent. I’ve never had a complaint or problem with them. Will continue to use them

Disappointed with the Chicken Schawarma, verging on undercooked. Arrived cold and was rubbery and quite tasteless. However the donner was excellent, very tasty not greasy and not rubbery like some other places. Would order Donner again, definitely not Schawarma.

Ordered dinner from another takeaway, worst food I've had, was freezing cold as well. It went in the bin.......thanks for sorting my night out penicook, food was fresh and piping hot when it got here

I’ve always been really impressed by the Pennycook but our pizza was missing rocket which we paid for, a little disappointing not to receive what we paid for even if it’s just an extra topping.

Always order from here! Tonight the pasta was bland and virtually no sauce on it, pasta and veg no sauce. My cheese sauce and chips were really bland, usually it’s really nice, smoked sausage was disgusting and the fried pizza was like they’d put a pizza in a frying pan, I was expecting pizza crunch

The food was lovely as always never complain but this time have to be honest friend wasn’t happy with no sauce for the haggis supper so was dry and it was late mines was lovely but if someone’s not happy makes the other unhappy so wasn’t is enjoyable as normal as they weren’t enjoying .xx

this evening we used the takeaway for fish and chips, because we were on the look out for a good chippy near our new house. We didn't find it. I went in at about half past five. It was not busy, not a good sign at that time on a Friday. I ordered fish and chips and was served promptly. When I got home, we opened the boxes and found fish in batter that was like granite. Obviously, the fish had been cooked, and then stored in the hot display, dried out so that it was virtually inedible. Certainly the batter was. The fish didn't taste good, but that was not necessarily due to its quality but its handling. We ate most of the fish and threw the batter away. The chips were good The first and last.

Used the delivery service a few times through lockdown. Food always arrived hot and fresh/tasty and delivery staff always chatty and friendly

It pains me to put this here but I can’t see any links to contact the restaurant directly which is a shame. I usually get first class food here but I have now got the fish twice and it’s been terrible, greasy and very fishy in taste and was very disappointing as it’s put me off ordering. I am hoping that this blip gets resolved so I can build confidence in ordering again, the only reason I am putting this here is because I can’t contact you directly. Sorry

Put wrong phone number by mistake, driver tried to call when arrived (no answer of course) but instead of coming up to the building just drove away. After I phoned the restaurant and explained, the same food that was attempted to be delivered 30 mins prior, was delivered. Cold and stale

Nachos were drowned in cheese sauce and the garlic added to the pizza was just bizarre. Not sure the person that cooked either dish would eaten it themselves. A shame as the last two times being here the food was excellent.

I arrived early to collect, no issue made up on the spot and was so fresh, everybody really enjoyed their dinner. Empty plates and everything was perfect.

No complaints, chips tasted fresh and white pudding was the best I have had in a long time

There aren't enough superlatives to describe how we feel about this wonderful place. The food is always supremely well cooked and incredible value for money.
