I work in central Birmingham and called in here for lunch on what was probably one of the coldest days of the year - physically and climatically it couldn’t be further from Mexico! I ordered a burrito with pork, medium salsa, optional cheese and the supplement guacamole. It came with the standard refried beans and rice, all wrapped in a pretty large tortilla. The girl behind the counter was friendly and very pleasant - not overselling anything and she wrapped the burrito very well. Before when I have eaten burritos or fajitas I have found the content spills out everywhere. Here it was compacted in very well and there was no spillage when I ate it; yet it was still a pretty decent sized snack to eat. Pork is the second most expensive meat filling behind beef and with the extra 50p guacamole the whole thing came to about £7.50 which some people might find expensive, but the restaurant is in an extremely busy mainline railway station so one has to expect and understand higher prices (although as I said the burrito was big and had a lot of filling). It seemed to go cold quite quickly but this may not be the restaurant’s fault: I went on a bitterly cold day, and being a “fast food” type establishment in a station the doors are wide open. The restaurant is situated just off the main station concourse after the ticket barriers in what Birmingham New Street describe as its “Red Lounge” - this comprises a strip of cafes and shops laid out either side of the numerous escalators that lead down to the station platforms. For my part I wasn’t traveling at the time I ate but my commuter season ticket allowed me to access this area of the station in any event. Inside the restaurant is decorated in a generally dark fashion with a few chairs both metal and upholstered. I wanted to sit in the corner but ended up moving tables to avoid sitting in some burrito dropping from a previous customer. They sold what they described as a range of Mexican beer but I could only make out Peroni in bottles and Sam Miguel on draft (Italian and Spanish respectively, albeit the San Miguel had a plastic cup over its tap suggesting it was not on that particular day). There is wallpaper with a range of (stereotypical) Mexican themes - male figure in colourful poncho plus sombrero and guitar; tapas dishes; Central American cars etc This is not a “date night” place to eat, but as a place for a snack whether you are going on a train journey or not then it is more than adequate and I would be more than happy to eat there again.

No gracias .

This burrito shop is right in the heart of New Street Station and is thus ideally located for travellers. You will find it by the entrance down to Platform 9. It serves a range of burritos and tacos at very reasonable prices. I've had the scrambled egg and cheese breakfast burrito around 6 times in the past 6 months and each time the amount of filling seemed to slightly reduce. This morning's was ridiculous; the amount of filling compared to the size of the flour tortilla made for an almost tasteless, unsatisfying breakfast. This is a takeaway/cafe style restaurant in the newly revamped Birmingham new street station. I visited on 7.10.15 and ordered the chicken burrito at £6.79. This is the worst fast food I have had in the UK in 20 years. The burrito was full of undercooked rice and tasteless chicken. It did not taste fresh and I am quite worried that it will make me ill. I wouldn't even recommend this above a microwave bacon sandwich if you are hungry. Get a chocolate bar instead. Avoid this place. Do not support these crap chain establishments who think it is OK to charge huge mark ups for food which is far below par. It is not expensive to make a tasty burrito.

My friend has been telling me for ages that this place does THE best burritos. So I tried it. And the burritos were fairly good I accept. But I wasn't enamoured by anything else. The service was average, the price seemed quite steep, and the seating isn't ideal. On a previous occasion we had stopped here for a drink on the way home, because let's face it the location is ideal on the station concourse. Visited here on the way home on a Thursday night. Was fairly late, so not expecting dynamite food. However, burrito was very dry, no tomato salsa. This to be fair might be my misunderstanding of what salsa meant here, but I would imagine most people would read salsa and think tomato. No guacamole available either, although as I said we did visit very late. The salsa added was supposed to be medium, I would say it was hot. The worst thing though was the service, very unfriendly server who was also quite surly. Go to M&S and get a wrap instead!

The food quality was not great: re-fried beans were bland, the veg was mushy and slightly cold, I asked for medium salsa and pretty sure I got mild (green, no kick to it all). The place sells a wide range of condiments but there is nothing but salt and pepper to actually use if you are eating from there. I asked and was told no. I also witnessed the staff being unhelpful to another person, the man (didn't speak English as a first language) didn't want sour cream and when he objected the server said "I asked you and you said yes" then continued without offering something fresh or apologising. I know this is just a station eatery, but plenty of burrito places get this right and it's not hard. It's also a chain of stores so they must have a standard to be achieved. And at £6 for nachos you certainly expect a half decent quality.

Reading some of the other reviews on Tripadvosor has really amused me, what are some people expecting from a fast food joint in a train station? As for food quality, I come here every time I pass through New Street station and have never noticed any deviation in standard, it always seems fresh and is always steaming hot. As for not being Mexican, it's as authentic as I would expect given the circumstances, even down to the Mexican cola - which is very nice. Value for money? Put it this way, if you're complaining about paying £10 for a burrito and a beer then I suggest you do not head across the walkway to Starbucks, you'll be horrified! Lastly the 'tiny portions' all I can say is, you are way more greedy than me. I'm stuffed. Rant over. Try it, but when you do just remember, you're in a train station in Birmingham not in Monterrey.

This place has a nice look and feel and as I love Mexican food and regularly get it in cities across the UK when travelling for work. So when I saw Mi Casa when I arrived at Birmingham station tonight I thought I'd give it a go...what a mistake. I had the nachos, the portion size was not great and the toppings were minimal, particularly the salsa which was pretty much non-existant, plus the meat was cold. The service wasn't great either and the server packed my food into a bag on its side so by the time I got to my hotel it had leaked all over my bag as the flimsy paper container and bag couldn't hold the food. Plus the price was several pounds higher than similar burrito bars elsewhere. Overall I would advise people not to waste their money!

I love Mexican food, but this place seems to be riding on the current popularity of Mexican food in the UK as well as the captive, monopolistic market of British rail station. I've walked past Mi Casa five days a week since it opened and I've never had enough time to go in, and from past experience eating burritos is a somewhat undignified operation, not suited to train travel, but I love Mexican food so I actually left home early today to go in. What struck me instantly were the staff, they were exceptional, which is a rarity, I've found, in train stations. The food was almost on par with the popular Wahaca Mexican in London, I believe there's also a Mi Casa Burritos in Victoria and Waterloo.Very good value considering the amount of food you get, the quality, how filling it is, and the location (as train station food is never cheap... although in New Street I'm surprised the other food outlets get any business, as Tesco is just up the escalators with sandwiches for £1.60!)

We have never eaten a Burrito before so this quick stop for a snack was a new experience. The staff are very friendly and helpful and explained the ingredients for this 'wrapped' hot snack. We opted for chicken which was accompanied with rice, bean paste, lettuce, salsa, sour cream etc., which was tightly wrapped in the flour tortilla and then tightly wrapped in foil. It was interesting and tasty and we're glad we tried it. The premises are spotlessly clean and the ingrediaents all looked fresh and well prepared. There are other items on the menu too of course, nachos etc., and I think I'd probably have those next time. Would recommend.
