On my first visit to Cairo Corner about eight months ago it immediately became one of my favourite places to eat in Newport. It's an immaculate restaurant with friendly, efficient service and generous portions of delicious food at very reasonable prices indeed. I always have the koshari which is a fantastic vegan dish.

This was very good, all cooked fresh and really good value. I had the beef liver eskanderi which was really tasty , spicy but not too much so. Its not hard to mess up cooking liver but this was done well. Good arabic coffee and proper squeezed mango juice not concentrate. I was pleased over all.

I have been going got about 2-3 months now and it’s honestly one of my favourite after college grabs and the sizes are so good for the price and their drinks are so lush. Absolutely recommend!!

The food is outstanding and well seasoned. The portions are hefty and great value. The owner and chef Mohammad was interested in our feedback and had a time for a chat.

Lovely food, lovely people. Proper Egyptian/Middle Eastern cuisine; everything was cooked fresh, and the fella intermittently came over offering free tea, 10/10

Popped in for a bite to eat and were blown away by how fresh and tasty everything was. Service went above and beyond, we were given hot, sweet mint tea after our food as a gift. Can't wait to return and try some more of the menu! Will take photos next time as it all looked as good as it tasted too.

So impressed. Freshly prepared, generous portions of delicious food. Like being given a home cooked meal. Superb option for vegetarians in town. The market food court is slick but this is just outside and serving better food than any of the places inside. Highly recommended. A gem. Deserves to become a local institution.

What a fantastic find! Been back twice since my first visit and it’s consistently superb. The food is all prepared after you order, so be prepared to wait but know that the wait is worth it! The portions are extremely generous and the flavours are incredible. I highly recommend the breakfasts where you get a little bit of everything but order extra bread and extra falafel because their falafel are kind blowingly good and even though they give you 5 you’ll still be craving more! Hot, herby almost buttery taste. Sublime! Staff are incredibly friendly and the owner does the cooking so is personally invested in seeing that everything is perfect. Good central location and incredibly reasonably priced. A restaurant I’d love to see flourish. Exactly what Newport needed. Fresh, fun and fabulous.

Just got back to Newport on the train, and thought I’d try out Cairo Corner after my neighbours recommended it. It didn’t disappoint! Had the hummus bowl and koshari. Eaten Egyptian before, both in the UK and in Egypt, but never street food, so the koshari was slightly new to me. All in all, it was lovely. Clean flavours from the hummus and the koshari bursting with flavour (especially with the tahini sauce and a little bit of chilli) Reasonably priced and thoroughly recommended!!

Good vegetarian option in Newport! Central as well. The falafel was great and the bread too. I can recommend this place to vegetarians!

Went there Friday afternoon with some friends and the food really is something special: I ordered the Foul (£4.00, pronounced 'fool'), a fava bean and tahini dish and the Kebda Iskandarani (£9.50, marinated strips of liver with onions and red pepper). Both were absolutely delicious: the Foul was warm, earthy and unctuous. Difficult to believe that they could get so much flavour from just beans! the Kebda was equally delicious, with great spicing and tender, melt-in-your-mouth strips of liver... I can't stop thinking about It! My friends also had the Foul and the Felafel, which were crispy on the outside and moist and garlicky on the inside, not like the dry, cardboard offerings from the supermarkets. They were served with real, homemade hummus, which was smooth, not like the gritty stuff we're used to. Everything was served with freshly made yeasty, creamy Balady bread (although rice and chips are an option) and all the dishes we had were just as freshly made as the Balady bread. Looking at the menu, there are so many dishes that I want to try: The Koshari (a bed of rice, chickpeas, pasta and their special tomato sauce, which can be served topped with Felafel, grilled Halloumi or any of the meat options on the menu) looks really interesting... I can't wait to go back again...

We went for a meal with friends who had eaten here several times previously and rated it highly. The menu is quite small and no vegetarian options shown, although when asked there were two options available, veggie curry and cauliflower steak unfortunately neither of which appealed to me personally. I opted for the potato skins starter as a mains instead which was quite tasty but nothing I could wholeheartedly recommend. My meat eating companions chose off the chalkboard menu but were all left feeling slightly underwhelmed, cassoulet, gammon and chicken, none of which they raved about, in fact they were disappointed too as it wasn’t up to previous standards. The concept behind the pub was apparently to recapture the original Victorian feel but it just looked as if it badly needed updating. Staff were very helpful and friendly but without great food I couldn’t rate it any higher.

Ordered an afternoon high tea and a savoury yesterday, the food was lovely plenty of filling in the sandwiches, I phoned to say something was missing from the high tea and in no time it was reckifed , but not just one item they sent more. First class service as always, have ordered Sunday roast dinners for tomorrow which in sure will be excellent thanks royal mail
