A real find .. starving and no idea where we were my husband and I stumbled upon this roadside pub .. log fire burning and the odd diner .. We both ordered Beef Sunday Roast which promptly arrived .. OMW .. everything was cooked to perfection .. the Beef divine and masses of it .. the veg with a slight bite just as it should, the gravy well !! Star quality .. How much you may ask .. 2 Delicious Roasts a pint of some beer or other and a coke £31😱 ..I'm considering selling up and moving to the local village 😋

We were passing through on our way to our place for the night from Driggs beach and checked if they were still serving food and dog friendly - yes on both counts! We had a chicken burger & chips and a childrens chicken nuggets & chips; piping hot, perfectly plated and you could just tell everything was freshly prepared and cooked. Chicken burger and nuggets were proper chicken meat; not processed and fresh traditional chips. Not a long wait on food and the lady that served and set our table was lovely. The gentleman who served our drinks was so friendly too. We've even booked a room in a couple weeks and hope we have an even better time, really looking forward to it. Really warm locals welcome, great food/beer/cider at a fair price and our dog was comfortable too!

This pub was by far the best eatery of our holiday! The pub itself is the only one in the area, and looks unassuming from the outside. However once entering, it is cosy, inviting and clean. It is also dog friendly. The menu is very reasonably priced, with a wide selection of options for dietary requirements and staff were happy to supply recommendations for ale's on tap. They also have licence for pouring spirits in Scottish measures (which are significantly bigger)! We waited for the food for between 30-45 minutes, which is to be expected considering it is ALL homemade. When the food came out, the portions were huge and delicious! By the end of the meal, the party of 5 were full and ordered desert to take out, which the staff were happy to accommodate. After finishing our meal, we ended the evening by playing games of darts and pool. Overall, this pub was amazing and we will defiantly be coming back next year. P.S. Although the road has road works and appears shut, it is in fact open!

We came to The Brown Cow Inn for a late lunch on Wednesday 13th December and weren’t disappointed! Our family of 8, plus a baby & 2 dogs were staying at a nearby Air B&B (Near Bank Cottage) and we searched for a local pub to cater for us all. We’d passed The Brown Cow on our previous visit to Cumbria so decided to book this time round. The pub itself is a real county pub, with a log fire, rustic decor and locals who call it their second home. The staff were nothing short of welcoming, who exchanged photos and stories with us about the masses of snow they’d received the week prior and the clear starry skies they get at night. Our food and drink orders were taken promptly, with a couple of us ordering starters. I’m not sure what we were all expecting, but the food absolutely blew us out the water. The portion sizes, taste and presentation would lead you to believe you were in a city bar, not a rustic country pub. The starters ordered were Garlic Mushrooms, Halloumi Sticks & a Spicy Pepper Soup - all of which were absolutely devoured leaving us eager to eat our mains. For the mains we ordered a selection of the chicken burger, scampi, fish & chips and chargrilled chicken. Our whole table went silent whilst we enjoyed our food! A couple of our party ordered desserts too which went down an absolute treat - the chocolate browny was so gooey and warm!! The whole experience from start to finish was nothing shy of excellent and was a lovely end to our week away. We most certainly will be back next time we visit Cumbria and we thank everyone at The Brown Cow Inn for such yummy food!!! Please go and support this lovely local business, you won’t be disappointed.

Food & Accommodation is great. Staff are very welcoming. UPDATE: 28/10/2023 - A return stay at this lovely, cosy little pub. Once again, welcomed like an old friend and the bar staff were quick in pouring me a fine ale. We sat infront of the open fire and watched the world go by for a few hours before ordering food. The Brown Cow does THE best home cooked food in the area!! The landlord is clearly a legend in the kitchen. One thing we found, there are 2 holiday cottages adjoined to the Brown Cow however these are not owned/operated by the Brown Cow. They are a completely separate entity. We will be returning again in due course because the journey is well worth it. Once again, a massive thank you to Rich and the team.

The most positive thing I can say is that the real ale selection was pretty good and they have fairly decent veggie/vegan options. Other than this, it was a scruffy, unwelcoming place. The outside was dirty and the car park was a mess. The inside wasn't much better, with a moth-eaten collection of stuffed animals dotted about. Three kids kept running into the toilets and then into the kitchen area (hygiene and health& safety obviously weren't a consideration here!) and we spent most of our visit batting away house flies. I'm puzzled by the glowing reviews this place has received, as this was not our experience.

We only visited once for a drink with the intention of returning for a meal but quickly changed our minds once we saw what it was actually like. Yes it's a country pub but that's no reason to compromise on cleanliness and quality. We found the pub to be dark, dinghy and oppressive. The pub owners' young daughters seemed to take great delight in running into the ladies' toilets and then into the kitchen repeatedly, leading us to question their hygiene standards or lack of them. Whilst it was quiet when we visited, we were informed by the lady who served us that the local lads were away for that particular afternoon, implying that it was probably a lot louder usually. This was proved the following weekend, (we were staying in the property next door on holiday and could see into their back yard), when there was loud pounding music from the pub that continued till about 12.15am and shouts and swearing from the punters with no regard for the other residents. Very disappointing experience.

Amazing food and huge portions!. All freshly prepared like it used to be. NOT a microwave or any frozen produce like the big pub chains. We dined here twice. Once for a fish supper for me and chicken fried burger for my partner and also a Sunday roast. Freshly made home made chips came with the freshest fish and largest burger I've seen. (Like my mam used to make). Sunday roast was absolutely delicious with perfect slices of roast beef ,freshly prepared veg. Mash, boiled and roasites and of course the best yorkshire pudding. After being in the UK for over 10 years, finally found a real country pub. Locals are exactly like the folks I grew up around, right down to the farmer's dog waiting on the quad bike outside! So let me explain why this is the UKs untapped gem... For one, it's not a chain, infact it's a 1960s country b&b pub family feel, where all the locals were popping in for drinks / food. Two, I came back with two extremely dirty ebikes and the chef arranged a jet washer then stored the bikes in a spare space. Three, it's not a five star, but, as I write this, a family are sat playing cards while their grand kids run around them, kids are helping clean tables and it's a totally relaxed feeling. Four, we were going to Keswick, which is fully booked, so for the first time tried something new, here, and it's so quiet on the roads, and just the right level of busy in the pub. Amazing for a mad busy Easter. Five, value, £80odd for a double room WITH breakfast on an Easter? Awesome! Six, kid friendly, I am not here with young kids, but it's a safe place. Seven, It has that small quiet country community feel. Don't get me wrong, it's a bit rough around the edges, but I think it adds to the authentic charm. So any travellers, wanting to experience what you always thought rural England is like, then look no further

We visited for food as we were staying nearby and although we hadn't booked, they made room for us. We were sat in a smaller room just off from the main pub which made it feel that we had our own mini pub. The pub is fully family ran and everyone who served us from the family seemed friendly and pleasant. Even their children who were playing games in another room would make conversation when passing and pointed out the restrooms to us. The food was lovely although we could not finish it due to such incredible portions! When it came to pay we were shocked that it was only £31 for two main meals and two drinks, we had to check they added both meals on! We will hopefully visit the area again someday and will 100% be looking to eat here when we do.

This is a really nice place friendly staff and an owner who is passionate about food.Sadly the food is letting the place down.
