Brasserie At The Townhouse in Scottish Borders

We stayed in Melrose at The Townhouse at the end of our UK holiday and this was probably the best place we stayed! It was just lovely. The room we had was huge with a lovely big bathroom and the bed was just dreamy. There was no road noise and the location was ideal being right in the heart of Melrose. The breakfast was terrific with lots of choice and the quality of the food was just ideal. Honestly, this is worth every cent!!

Delicious Sunday lunch with family whilst on holiday near Melrose. Two of us had the Sunday roast (beef) which was very good with all the trimmings cooked well. The other meals were very good too. We had a warm welcome and friendly and efficient waiters. We sat outside in the sun which added to the experience but the dining room also looked nice.

Service was very good. The food was good quality, but I really do feel that it was overpriced. Poor selection of beers and ciders.

Excellent Sunday lunch. Roast beef cooked rare to med rare - perfectly. Dtaff friendly and service efficient.

Due to being let down by Marmioms Brasserie Melrose we had to find some where else for our Anniversary Meal. We were lucky enough to get a table for 2 at The Townhouse Melrose. The service was very friendly and professional and the food was excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

I ate here with my husband last week. The service and food were excellent, good quality fresh produce, both our meals were a very high standard everything is made in house no ready made deserts here, my husband had a chocolate fondant with cherry sorbet and the waiter said it would be a little longer as they make it themselves. I would not hesitate to recommend.

I have stayed several times and James and his team always look after you superbly. It feels more like a second home than a hotel. Great rooms, terrific showers and good food. Highly recommended.

Initial impressions was that it was rather dated and this wasn't enhanced by the laminated menu like you get in the cafe but the food was really great and good value. In our opinion it was better than Provender which is in the Michelin guide. I had a smoked haddock scotch egg which was really tasty and my husband had salt and pepper calamari which he said was really good. I had the braised beef cheek with celeriac and the meat was just so tender as was my husband's chicken and I finished with a yoghurt panacotta which was so prettily presented - in fact all the food was presented to a high standard and the staff were friendly and welcoming, Had we been staying in Melrose longer we would have gone back.

I was up in the Scottish Borders on a business trip. The Townhouse was recommended to me by a colleague. And WOW - he got it right! Arrived in the early evening., Greeted by a friendly member of staff. Checked in. She advised me on the meals, including breakfast the next day. I had to get to the office at 8.15am which meant I would miss breakfast as it is usually from 8am. No problem, she would arrange for me to have breakfast at 7.30am. I have never had such an accommodating response! I was having dinner that evening. WOW WOW WOW! The food was outstanding. AND it was included in my room rate - Bed, Breakfast and Dinner for £140. WOW! The service, the food were completely amazing! The room was clean - no I mean spotless with a comfortable bed and a shower that actually worked. Thank you to the team at The Townhouse. I hope to be back in the near future. If you are reading this and find yourself in the Scottish Borders - a beautiful part of the World I will also add - I highly recommend you go stay at The Townhouse in Melrose. BRILLIANT!

Popped in for light lunch. Really great atmosphere no friendly staff. Food was tasty and well presented. Didn’t disappoint.

We visited on an evening. A good menu, and the food that comes out looks good and was very tasty. 10/10 service from the team in a nice environment. Nice selection of cocktails, mocktails, and wine as well. A real asset for Melrose, and well worth spending your money there 🙂

My wife, adult son, and I had a lovely meal in The Brasserie here. The service was good, there was a good choice of food and the surroundings were comfortable. The presentation of the food looked lovely and it tasted as good as it looked. Highly recommended.

Stayed in the Townhouse last Friday with my wife for a surprise birthday party in Melrose. Room was large , very clean with great facilities. Drinks in the bar were excellent with a good choice of cocktails , beers , wines & spirits. Although we did not have dinner in the Hotel the food being served looked fantastic & large portions. Had an excellent full Scottish breakfast in the morning with choice of eggs cooked to perfection. Service overall was first class. Looking to book again soon.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here, in lovely surroundings. We had Townhouse Fishcakes, venison steak (delicious), Belhaven Smoked Salmon, cinnamon poached pears, all very very tasty. The staff were lovely too and efficient. Will definitely return.

Had evening meal here last week and it was gorgeous. Plenty of room and very clean. Nice menu and plenty of choices. Staff were lovely and the service was great. We have just eaten a fantastic meal at The Townhouse in Melrose. The staff were very helpful and polite. My wife had fish pie, her words were "it is probably the best I have ever had". 41 years ago when this lovely building was known as the Bonne Accord. We arrived in the snow to a beautiful warm welcome. yes we saw room 4, a family room. but were swiftly shown the lounge and were told to make ourselves warm by the fire., Quicker than you could imagine we had home made soup crusty bread and the biggest pot of tea ever. That memory has sustained me through lots of tough times. A short visit on Saturday 20th July 2019. and the staff were as friendly and helpful. Booked this for my husbands birthday and was disappointed with the food i chose duck for my main course and could not even with a steak knife cut through it and so i went hungry as i was not offered an alternative even although i told the waiter of the problem.

Spent a three night break with two friends at this great hotel.The owner and family are hands on ensuring the smooth running of the hotel. The attitude of them and staff is "can do" with a smile making you feel as if nothing is any bother. We had breakfast in our rooms at the times requested leaving us to start the day at a leisurely pace, we were on a relaxing weekend after all.We had a couple of light lunches and two dinners all of which were of a high standard, excellent fresh ingredients and a well thought out menu. All meals were served with a smile the staff were attentive but not over bearing and again nothing seemed too much bother.We would recommend this hotel and will be returning before the winter months set in.

Melrose has a lot of eating establishments to choose from so we opted for the Townhouse as I had been there a few months ago for a funeral and it seemed nice.Inside the décor was nice and there were other couple easting which I took as a good sign.I love Cullen Skink (read my other reviews) and it was a deciding factor too in coming into the Townhouse. It was fantastic! Really nice. My companion had fish in breadcrumbs and chips and he really enjoyed it.Sadly my issue is more with customer service – I had ordered a chicken and bacon mayonnaise sandwich to accompany my Skink and everything arrived together as requested. That was ok. The lady who I assume was manageress delivered my sandwich calling it a ‘ciabatta’ which should have alerted me I guess. It also came with chips and I had a feeling what I ordered came with crisps. I thought she was maybe trying to ‘posh it up a bit’?Anyway once finished my fantastic Skink I started into the sandwich and found onion chutney with the bacon. I assumed it was a fancy sandwich so ate more. I started to wonder where the chicken was and after eating the first half opened up the second to find bacon, some cheese, rocket and onion chutney. No chicken or mayo to be seen. It was not an unpleasant but was not what I had ordered. I watched as the staff scuttled about to other diners and expected a check back – “is everything ok?” – it never came. So I ate the second bit of bacon and left the rest. In fairness I ate some of the chips and picked at the veg in the side salad.When the girl came to clear our plates she then asked if everything was ok. We said the fish was lovely and that the Skink was fantastic but I pointed out to her that the sandwich was not the one I had ordered.In these days of food allergies etc I was trying to be helpful. Luckily I don’t have any allergies. I know that mistakes happen but it is how an establishment deals with them that show up the good places from the bad. While I do not like to complain or make a scene or fuss I do realise that if no-one says that something is wrong then an establishment can’t put things right and that’s not fair to them either. If you read my profile you’ll see that I once sent food back and that went really badly – I’ll never do that again!The girl apologised and went to the lad behind the bar (he had taken the order) and they looked at our check and I heard her explain that the way he had written down the order had caused the mistake. He came over towards me and I asked for the bill. The manageress lady came in and rung up the bill after she had been in conversation, outside, with the girl serving.I went to the bar to pay and asked if I had been charged the full amount for my sandwich (gathering evidence for TA) The manageress rather curtly replied “yes as I had eaten it.” I explained that I had been waiting from a check back and she said “We don’t do that!” and continued to lay all the blame at my door – I should have said something sooner. She made me feel very stupid, sad, humiliated and angry. There was no hint of an apology from her and as a result I would say to anyone thinking to eat here to think twice. If you do – check very carefully what you order and more importantly what you actually get. If she had simply said ‘sorry’ and maybe a couple of quid off the bill – this review would have been glowing!

Had a dinner with friends at the Townhouse. We has a fantastic 3 course dinner. Great Service. The lamb was one of the best meals I have ever tasted. The rhubarb creme brûlée was amazing. Great atmosphere. A great evening out.

Lovely place we stumbled across on Sunday and we were greeted with a lovely warm welcome by the staff. Lovely modern clean facilities with a fantastic restaurant. The Sunday roast was Devine with a lovely starter, fantastic cooked roast beef with all the trimmings and dessert was lovely.Well worth a visit and I’d love to try the through the week menu! We will be back.

Really surprised at how good the food was here, very very good the chef deserves lots of credit. The bread and pesto oil was fantastic, amazing fish cakes with a curry sauce and a piping hot fish pie, top quality all round! Would have given 5 stars but the servers where a little snobby.

The Townhouse is our favourite place to dine on special occasions and can always be relied upon for a consistently high standard in terms of both food and service. Having a sweet tooth, I especially love their dessert creations - on our most recent visit, I chose a pud based on a rhubarb and ginger theme (one of my fave flavour combinations!) and it looked and tasted amazing!

We booked our evening meal in the early afternoon, just as well as it was quite busy in the evening, and it was only Tuesday. Interesting menu (see website), beautifully cooked and presented, worth returning to. And free parking at the front door!

This is a lovely hotel to eat at in Melrose, food is very good as is the service. Nothing is too much trouble by the staff, the diningroom is not too large and the noise level is fine.

While staying overnight in Melrose we decided to have dinner here. A good selection of fish/meat dishes, some with a slight twist and presented well. We both had starters, one of which was a very filling bowl of the soup of the day. Then my husband chose the breaded haddock, both the fish and breadcrumbs were excellent. But the chips were unremarkable pre-prepared chips, which did not compliment the fantastic fish, surely hand cut chips could be served? We managed to share a dessert between us, another wonderful creation, a good end to a lovely meal. It was a very relaxed dining area and the waiting staff were very pleasant and attentive.

A totally unexpected experience! Purely on a whim decided to have a Sunday lunch at The Townhouse. Seemed a very quiet place to start with but it soon filled up. It's also a dog friendly place - they welcome well behaved owners too! Very friendly and efficient staff, really impressed with the service. Food was just wonderful. I had the partridge breast and confit partridge leg - wow! My other half had the braised haunch of venison - again - wow! Desserts: parfait with sorbet and honeycomb, and sticky date pudding - just delicious. ICan wholeheartedly recommend eating here .

Had a lovely meal here while stopping at Gibson Park camp site. First class service and really enjoyed the whole evening, extensive menu we'd not tire off with a couple of interesting vegitarian options. Good well priced wine list. Also good for that special occasion.

Visited here today for a lovely family lunch. Large selection on the menu and also a set lunch and dinner menu for 2/3 course price. I had the burger which was lovely a very big plate full and very tasty. All the food was well presented. There was also a kids menu available which had a good selection. The atmosphere was very welcoming and although not a large seating area was very comfortable with attentive staff. Would recommend and hope to visit again when in Melrose.

Meal was tasty but a little over seasoned. I had fish cakes with a milk curry sauce, whilst my wife had a flan which was cold. She had fish and I had the pork ribs, The star of the meal was the cheesecake my wife had, although the sticky date pudding was also good

A group of us met here for lunch recently - we normally meet monthly and have one course lunches at the "most acceptable" local hostelry. This time we, unusually, decided to try the 2-course lunch deal and that went very well. I had the pickled mackerel starter which was tasty but a little too sweet for me; followed by the fish and chips. Again, unusually, we were not automatically provided with tartare sauce - which was not a problem for most of us. I prefer simple mayonnaise and we got that, (and other sauces), but in a large open sauce boat which looked "pre-used". We then finished with coffee all round.Service was friendly and helpful. We'd happily return.

The two course lunch deal at roughly £18 offers good quality food at a reasonable price in a pleasant unpretentious location in the centre of this attractive Borders town.Our party of six had starters of rustic pate, pickled mackerel, fish cakes and soup and these were generally rated highly. Our mains of fish and chips and homemade beef burgers were rather more ordinary but were well cooked and filling. Good coffee to follow.Service was good but might have been better. TIP : If the chips slide off the plate onto the table as you are serving a meal, don't require the customer to scoop the chips back onto the plate; instead immediately offer a complimentary bowl of chips to replace them! This was our second visit to The Townhouse and we were not disappointed. It is a lovely setting and provides particular value on two occasions each day, once during lunch and an hour slot between 6 and 7 in the evening. We opted for the two course meal for just over £17.00 per person, not cheap, but the food is superb and beautifully presented, ideal for a special night out. Don't have a snack before you sit down to eat, we were going to opt for the three course meal, but had to call a halt after two courses! The service was excellent and all in all a thoroughly good night out. Highly recommend ed.

Our lunch at “The Townhouse” was so nice! We had the most delicious, flavorful cream of veggies soup with smoked ham and yummy sandwiches (egg salad for me and tuna for my husband). Superb service, beautiful tastefully decorated dining area, lovely ambiance - I wish we could have stayed longer in charming Melrose and enjoy our dinner at “The Townhouse”.

We were visiting Melrose for a couple of hours on Sunday & had a great Sunday Lunch at the Townhouse. The scallop starter was perfectly cooked, beautifully presented & just the right size. My husband had the smoked salmon which was a very generous portion and the quality of the salmon was excellent. I then had the Sunday roast which was the best I’ve had whilst eating out, I could be tempted to forgo 3 hours in the kitchen every Sunday for a drive to Melrose for this! The beef was pink & tender, the veg was not just an afterthought & really made the dish a standout. Will most certainly return!

The borders is sadly lacking in decent places to eat so the Townhouse has very little competition. That can sometimes mean mediocre quality but generally this place dishes put some decent if not remarkable food. Service however is shockingly miserable with one waitress never once breaking into a smile. Even a forced glimmer of teeth might have raised our spirits a little but none was forthcoming. Sad as it simply makes for an in enjoyable experience even if the food was OK.

There are just not enough words to describe the excellence of the food, staff and ambiance of the restaurant. My siblings and I just recently went to Scotland and stumbled upon this gem. From the moment you walk in you are treated like you are the most important person in the restaurant. You are catered too in a way that is rarely seen these days.The food was heavenly. Several of my sister's had the fish and chips. They were light and fluffy, perfectly cooked, I had a delicious grilled chicken ceaser salad and my brother the venison. The main reason for this review was the chicken vegetable soup. We literally talked about it for days. The soup had such a great flavor, it was like they cooked it for days.Do yourself a favor, go to this restaurant , get the soup and sit back and relax. It will be one of the best meals you have ever had, promise.

We were last here over a year ago, and came away very impressed. Would a return visit live up to our already high expectations?

This was my first trip to Melrose and neither the place or the Townhouse disappointed.

After booking at very short notice we were welcomed by the friendly staff. The menu was full of tempting choices. The highlight was the delicious shin of beef which was amazing. We both had cheese and biscuits which was lovely with the house red (reasonably priced) We will definitely be back again!

Went for a meal with my Mum, as staying nearby and they recommended we go here.
