Bench in Sheffield

This place is simply the best in Sheffield, the food is always outstanding - whatever you choose. Coupled with a gorgeous atmosphere and great service you guys have got it. Thanks for being in Sheffield!!

I had high expectations visiting Bench but felt a bit deflated after the meal. The drinks were great and the staff are lovely! Some of the dishes were excellent whilst others were overpriced or bland. The cured trout dish and the butternut squash dish were the highlights - couldn’t fault them. The fazoletti was quite bland and almost wet. The beef short rib caesar salad was overpriced and not worth the money. It cost £18 for 6 small pieces of beef, some lettuce, slices of pear and parmesan.

I don't think I've ever eaten in Sheffield before, but we are here for a friend's wedding, so we looked for somewhere interesting to eat. We found Bench in The Good Food Guide, a "Modern European" restaurant. Bench is located in the fashionable Nether Edge area of Sheffield and features a communal table down the middle of the restaurant, with individual tables around it and a very open kitchen. Really nice atmosphere, with some outdoor tables during the warm evening that we visited. The menu is small plates of traditional and creative food, which we love. As there was 4 of us, we could try a great range of dishes. Which we did: - Nocellara olives - Dan's sourdough with whipped butter - Boquerones - York ham with Guinness ketchup & cornichon - Panisse with ajo blanco, preserved fennel & grilled grapes - Triple cooked potatoes with smoked cod's roe - House stracciatella with grilled peach, aleppo pepper & basil Hand cut fazoletti with rainbow chard, butterbeans & parmesan - Grilled beetroot with labneh, sumac & harissa - Roasted onion stuffed with lamb merguez ragu with homemade ricotta - Cull ewe mutton with sugarsnap peas, pancetta & pickled onions - Tamworth pork collar steak with Rebel XO - Neal's Yard Coolea cheese with chilli jam & sourdough crackers - Dark chocolate cremeux with caramelised whey & hazelnuts - Alphonso mango sorbet & Italian meringue I really liked all the dishes, but the Pork Collar and the Mango Sorbet were stand-outs for me. Really good lunch, just on point, good dishes executed well. Wine was well chosen, staff were attentive and service was excellent. Couldn't fault it, really good value for the quality too.

Second time visiting here for out anniversary. Food was even better than the last time. Service was great as always, thanks to Biba for making the night special, and thanks to Sarah who look after us during the meal. Great selection of wine also. Going to try their bakery before returning again.

Food was fantastic. Service excellent. Lovely friendly atmosphere. Music was a touch too loud for my taste but Bench is definitely worth a visit.

Delicious food and lovely atmosphere! Perfect little spot for a date or with friends, really friendly staff who were happy to provide recommendations. The food was incredible and perfect for sharing and trying lots of new things. We will 100% be visiting again - would recommend!

Went for lunch, got there early and ate through most of the menu! Really enjoyed everything we tried. Some dishes were very clever, without it feeling at all pretentious. Just really good food, friendly, responsive service and interesting wines. The cured bream and blood orange was joyous, enjoyed the orange wine most out of the wines we tried and the whipped butter you get with the sour dough is like eating buttery clouds. Very much recommend. We'll be back in the evening to try as much of the rest of the menu as possible.

For my money this is my favourite place to eat out in Sheffield. 3 visits now and it still reaches the same heights.

My second visit to Bench last night, its such a treat!! The food was absolutely amazing.. every dish was so unique and packed with flavour and freshness. The staff are also wonderful, so warm, humurous and knowledgeable. Always there to offer recommendations but never pushy. Can't wait for my next visit.

I tried the potatoes with cod roe mayo, and the most amazing ox tongue with cannolini beans (I was a little apprehensive to choose such a meat) but it was exceptional. Like salt beef, a softer texture and the herby green puree was amazing. It really was a fantastically put together meal. Really enjoyed it and would recommend!

Bench is definitely in my top 5 places to eat in Sheffield. The food is consistently excellent, and they are never complacent about their menu. They can also modify a number of the dishes for vegan dining if you need. The service is, and has always been brilliant. Always welcoming, never intrusive. It makes sitting by a window in Nether Edge watching traffic and people trundle by a way more pleasurable experience than it could be!

We had the most amazing meal at Bench tonight! Everything we had was just stunning from the sourdough bread and salami to start, to the delicious pork dish and of course - dessert! The staff are so friendly and great for giving recommendations on the menu! We will definitely be returning!

The food is amazing, but the standout was the top notch service and atmosphere. From entry the staff couldn't have been more welcoming, even the chefs nodding a "Hello". The perfect balance of attentive, relaxed and knowledgeable service alongside some really cracking food and wine. Will be returning very very soon.

Food and staff amazing - the best place I’ve been for food in Sheffield!

Bench is a phenomenal dining experience in Sheffield and I'll be recommending it to everyone I know. The food and wine are expertly sourced and crafted, the service is attentive and kind, and the atmosphere is relaxed and laid back. I'll definitely be visiting again soon! The standout for me was the pork steak which was a lot larger than expected! Leftovers are great on a sandwich though!

A lovely and cozy place with amazing food and very friendly staff. The food is beautiful, and drinks are delicious. Make sure to say your food requirements before ordering as the menu does not list all the ingredients.

Of course the food at Bench is absolutely incredible, beautiful, delicious and paired with great wine and cocktails, but as someone who can't eat gluten or eggs 😫 I'm always impressed by how they find fun twists on their menu if needed, but most of the time it's not necessary and they're always incredibly accommodating and understanding about my intolerances. Easily one of my favourite places to go for an evening, full stop.

Walked in, after dark, on a cool fall night. Drinks sumptuous and the desert… so good.

It's not often places live up to such high expectations but Bench really does! We shared 6 sharing plates and 2 desserts between the 2 of us (favourite dishes included gorgonzola pasta, braised ox tongue and the Bullion chocolate mousse 😋) - all delicious. Worth the money and really nice for special occasion. We'll be back for sure 👍

Fresh, tasty modern food. Amazing oysters, bocorones and wine. We went for a graduation meal and certainly great for a special occasion or more casual eating.

The food is very nice. We enjoyed the cod croquettes, mussels with chorizo and the tomato salad. The wines and cocktails were very good. The service was a bit stuffy - clearing plates before we were finished and rushing us out. Felt like we couldn't fully relax. But a nice experience overall, with very good food.

What a little hidden treasure!!! Amazing food, sumptuous yet informal. We just arrived directly from the Peak District, rucksacks and boots hanging from them and all, and we were kindly welcomed and felt totally comfortable in Bench… but I digress; the food! That’s the most important thing – every dish (from the cavatelli to the sardines beccafico to the rare-breed pork chop) was perfectly balanced both in flavour and substance. Loved it!

Location, service, atmosphere& food are great. The only let down is the natural wine. The food is so lovely and the wines are so disappointing . I am not a natural wine fan. Please please offer non natural wines!

Wow! We were blown away by the attentiveness of the front of house staff on arrival and throughout the meal. The food was exceptional, with plenty of delicious vege options. Quite honestly, one of the best meals out either of us had ever experienced. We'll definitely be back... and very soon! Congratulations Ronnie, Dan and Jack! A truly delicious meal and a memorable occasion. Please thank Biba who was most attentive all evening and very knowledgeable about the dishes, the wines and finally the desserts. She even went out of her way to find out the meaning of panna cotta for us! I've told many people about Bench and will now tell even more.

Bench is my favourite restaurant in Sheffield - been going for the last few years and they never fail to provide a lovely evening. The food and wine are consistently delicious, and because the menu changes frequently there's always something new and exciting to try. Great for both meat eaters and vegetarians.

I had very high expectations for this place and they were met and went beyond. With the music of old school Hip Hop and Jazz in the background we enjoyed a fine selection of dishes. Are favourite being the oysters, so fresh and making my mouth water, so delicious paired well with a great orange wine. The Bench team were all very friendly and knowledgeable. Atmosphere was cosy, intimate yet alive. I'm sure I'll be going back in the future to experience this food dream again.

Can’t get enough of this place. Every time we treat ourselves to a visit we are not disappointed. You know somewhere is good when you can bring your in-laws and they’re blown away by how delicious the food is.

Amazing value happy hour cocktail. Offset by the pricy but nice oysters. But they've a business to run! Interesting looking wines untested though. Book to be sure

Beginning with the vibe, I’d definitely say it’s a very smart casual kind of place. I had the small table with the high stools so it was more intimate and didn’t experience the “bench”, though it seems great from people that were there. The staffs were very knowledgable and helpful as you’d expect. The food was almost perfect and we ordered a lot of the menu. The only thing that was let down was the tomahawk steak, as it came out lukewarm/cold and fairly tough which was great considering the price. But the rest were all good. The restaurant is not the easiest to reach as it doesn’t have great public transport link to it at night, so a taxi or driving is recommended unless you don’t mind the infrequent buses. Overall, I’d recommend here for a special occasion!

I think our expectations were too high. Sorry Pros. - the decor is nice. Entertain yourself by wondering if the dried flowers are close enough to the candles to catch fire... - some of the food was lovely. The sauce with the trout was especially good. - the beer was very nice and well priced - the prices per plate are reasonable Cons - small plates is accurate, the portions are small and you will need to order more than you anticipated - inherent in small plates arriving independently of each other is that some things that are better eaten in combination will arrive separately. For example the charcuterie and the trout are much more enjoyable with the bread. - some of the food was less good. The lamb wasn't good at all. -charging £5 corkage for wine bought in the restaurant strikes an odd note. ( However excellent the wine may be) Service is very prompt We didn't try the desserts.

Have been a handful of times and they have always smashed it. The food is 10/10, the service is 10/10 and the wine is 10/10. I cannot fault them at all. 100% recommend, if you’re thinking about it then book it!

Everything was spot on. Food was amazing. Only criticism I have is there was no soft drinks like coke, lemonade, tea/coffee. Apart from that, Would recommend.

Absolutely fantastic foodie gem in our neighbourhood-delights every time. The chefs are enthusiasts and sipping on organic Sicilian wine with beautifully presented Carlingford oysters/small plates is such an indulgence in Sheffield! We came here for aperitivo time and excellent value! Great service really makes it well worth coming over to Nether Edge!

Bench serves a selection of absolutely delicious small plates. It's a small place, and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. The menu changes regularly, but there seem to be a few stalwarts, such as the tenderstem broccoli with romesco sauce, and the sliced pork in XO sauce. The main menu is only available on the inside tables, but drinks and nibbles are available on the pavement café seating outside the front door.

Everything about our evening meal at Bench was a delight. The cocktails we tried were all beautifully crafted and delicious. The wine selection is small, but clearly compiled with love: the wines are unusual, packed with character and fairly priced. Between us we sampled most of the dishes on the menu that night, and they were all full of flavour, showcasing their high quality ingredients. The meat dishes are bold - rare and fatty for maximum flavour - but vegetable and fish dishes were also highly impressive. Five stars all the way.

Delicious on every occasion I've visited. So happy that Sheff now has a spot like this, good small plates served in an unpretentious way. Bench leaves a lasting impression every time I dine here and it's no wonder why! Would HIGHLY recommend :)

Loved our meal here: every single small plate and drink was delicious. Some of the dishes were really inventive and brought flavours together that I’ve never had before. Had a great experience at Bench, somewhere I'd been looking forward to visiting for a while. There are great by the glass wine options available, and a range of bottles on display for you to choose. The food is small plate and comes when it's ready, which suited us absolutely fine. Get the burrata if it's available. Big fan of the art in the toilet!

We recently booked Bench for our tenth anniversary, inviting close friends to celebrate with us. It was an easy decision to make as Jack and the team create such a welcoming, cosy and relaxing environment that even oyster-shy friends unaccustomed to natural wine feel comfortable in! We had a wonderful time – even better than we had imagined, which seems implausible – with excellently cooked, seasonal food and a selection of wines that paired. Bench is a very special place with an attentive, caring and knowledgeable team that should be celebrated themselves.

Absolutely sublime! Been meaning to try Bench for A LONG TIME and most definitely did not disappoint. The quality of food is at a very high standard and the flavours take you on a journey. The duck fat potatoes were out of this world. Service was faultless 👌. Recommended for a celebratory meal and if you love your wine 🍷it's definitely worth checking out their specials!

What an amazing night at Bench. We have wanted to visit since they opened, and were totally blown away. They exceed our already high expectations. We shared most of the menu with a group of friends. 🍽️The menu was incredible and there wasn't a lacking dish amongst them. Special shout outs go to the pork chop, duck fat potatoes with aioli, coronation chicken skewers, hispi cabbage, panchetta and mussel salad , and agretti (land seaweed) orange and chilli salad. Don't underestimate a salad here ! 😂🙌 All dishes were amazing and quite a few tastes that we hadn't tried before - which is getting hard to come by 😂 🍷The wine was also amazing , we tried a dry house white and a very light fruity yet dry red /rose called pink moustache 〰️ which were both incredible- and far too drinkable 😅and I don't normally rave about wine.

If I could give this 6 stars I would! Every dish is an experience, and every plate served has an incredible amount of detail and care paid to it. Go go go go!!!

We have been to Bench for a few different occasions now & every time we have a brilliant experience. The food is fantastic, the wine is great & the staff are so knowledgeable - always happy to pair wine, make food suggestions and answer any questions about the menu. We will be back!

These guys are just doing lovely things with food and drink, exactly how they want to do it and it’s so refreshing. Are you a picky eater? Probably not the place for you? Did you want your own dinner on a plate in front of you, with a glass of cab sav, followed by STP and an espresso? Well you can’t have it and they make absolutely no apology for it. If you want one beautiful plate of thoughtful and clever deliciousness after the next, brought to you with such grace and care, and a curated list of unusual yet delicious drinks, which have been selected with absolute passion, then this is just the best place. They don’t have a telephone, which seems a bit obnoxious initially, but they have always managed to fit us in and are so nice when you get there and everything is delicious, so whatever I’m just happy they’re doing their thing how they want to do it. An amazing night. Incredible food. I’m so glad it’s in Sheffield.

Incredible food and excellent service. Accommodated our range of dietary requirements with very little notice. It's very rare to find this level of flavour and quality of ingredients in Sheffield, plus it's a lovely environment as well. We will definitely be back.

Cannot say enough positive things about this place. The team are 100% passionate and committed to what they do. Yes it’s a compact menu but nothing goes on it without being throughly considered. Have an open mind and try whatever’s on there and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Been looking forward to eating here since it opened during the pandemic last year, it was 100% worth the wait! Can't fault anything, the food, the service and atmosphere are all outstanding. Even down to the beautiful wooden benches and dinnerware they have. My partner and I eat out a lot and are both in agreement it's the best food we've had in Sheffield, and up there with the Michelin tasting menu's. Every dish had the perfect balance of flavours and seasoning, the asparagus with wild garlic and cured egg yolk was a particular highlight for me. The staff were all super friendly and knowledgeable, and I love the open kitchen and completely chilled atmosphere. My partner and I can usually tell how much we've enjoyed a meal if we decide to get a dessert, as it's not something we often do, but here there was no doubt we were staying for dessert (although we did actually contemplate getting another main dish as the dessert)! Very glad we went for the chocolate ganache though as it was the perfect end to the meal aswell, just the right size rich indulgence. So happy with this addition to Nether Edge, and with the menu changing daily it is definitely our new regular, got to restaurant!
