Basalt in Coleraine

Was greeted very nicely at the door, sat down at our seats 15 minutes until we got a drink order which we had to ask for it seemed very under staffed as the tables to our left and right both had to ask for the order to be taken as it was like we were just being ignored. Took another 15 mins for the drinks to come. We got the nachos to start which was lovely. All the food bar the rump steak was great as asked for well done and it just wasn’t lol ate it anyway and didn’t complain as it was still nice . I work in a restaurant myself and don’t really complainers . We then proceeded to sit outside for a drink asked if we should come in and order or if someone will come out but no one came out so we got the bill

We had a splendid evening in basalt at the weekend, a lovely warm welcome from the staff was followed by great service and sublime food. As a recommendation for food I had the peppered sirloin pappardelle which was so good!! A restaurant on top of their game so well done to all.

Out for a family dinner and we were so disappointed with our main courses. We had Pil Pil prawns for starters which were nice, but three of the mains were tasteless and very unappetising looking. We had Chicken and mushroom tagliatelle, Chicken burger and Chicken breast. All of which were tasteless. We later met friends there who said exactly the same about their dinner and they ordered pepper sauce to add some flavour to their meal. The waiting staff were pleasant, but unfortunately as English didn’t seem to be their first language, it was hard to communicate. All in all a disappointment and we will definitely not be rushing back to Basalt.

Very good food. We had an amazing table overlooking the bay. All the staff were nice and the food was well prepared and homemade. Portions were pretty generous.

Having booked a table for myself and my husband to celebrate his new job, we arrived to Basalt on Saturday 2nd March to be seated, at what can only be described as a shelf with bar stools mounted to the floor, overlooking the chiefs as the cooked. The shelf was approx 40cm wide and you were unable to put your legs below the shelf due to there not being enough room to do so. I raised my concerns to the server, that this was not a table which I had booked and I would be unable to tolerate sitting sideways through out our entire meal, I informed him that I had a chronic illness, which results in me being in chronic pain and needing adequate seating and room for my knees to go u under the shelf. He returned to say, that there were no other tables available. Had we not been out to celebrate I would have got up and left immediately, however I did not want to spoil my husbands night out, which are few and far between. This results in us having to eat sideways through-out the meal and my clothes smelling like I had worked in the chip shop all night, as the frying steam and heat hit us directly as we were so close to the cooking area. I was in agony throughout, which is a shame as the food was amazing, if only we had been able to enjoy it. We had intended to stay for the rest of the night and have drinks to celebrate, however due to how much pain I was in having sat, trying to eat like this, I had no choice but to leave to get home and take pain killers to try and relive it. I again mentioned my issues when paying for my meal, to offered a meaningless apology. No offer of compensation was made. Am am shocked that they would expect anyone to be seated for a meal this way and that quite frankly it was apparent that they only cared about squeezing as many people in as possible for dinner to boost profit! Why do they even take bookings for a table, to which you have to pay a deposit for it, if there are no tables left?? I will not be back!

Service was shocking, some of the worst I have experienced. Extremely slow and disorganised. 3 times we were brought drinks which we had not ordered. We had to ask twice for the drinks we did order. At the end we were also given the wrong bill. Ordered nachos to begin which were not worth the near £10 price. Barely any meat at all and cheese on it that looked like it was out of a tube. Small ‘sharing’ portion. Nachos were also bland. The sharing steak came medium rare when asked for medium well and the onion was missing from the platter. Also it was only one small bowl of chips between two. We had ordered pepper sauce and received something that wasn’t that. Never the less the steak was tasty. The couple at the table next to us also had issues after receiving the wrong main course and having steak very underdone. Place had potential, definitely did not fulfill…..

We both (2 couples) ordered the 17 oz rump steak between 2, which was £15 each. The steak was already sliced and was definately not a 17 oz rump steak. The portions were small as well. The food was lovely but just not enough for 2 adults. The special deal on wines was half price but when we went to order there was no red wine on the list and only one white wine available, then prosecco. When we got the bill we did check it thankfully and they had charged us an extra £30. The place was not busy and i am not surprised at all. Very disappointed.

Met up with some friends at Basalt for dinner. 3 of us had the rump steaks and they were just amazing. The flavours of the steak was like none I have tasted before. The restaurant was very busy but the service was excellent. Friendly staff. This is my second time to eat in Basalt and on both occasions everything was awesome. Well done. Will look forward to returning soon.

The restaurant was lovely and would really recommend. First of all the food was excellent and arrived not so early that we didn’t have Thant much time to chat but early enough that we got bored and hungry. The service was exceptional and all waiters were nice and friendly. When the food arrived it was amazing! This restaurant is a great place for any occasion. I would really recommend if you are in the area or just any time. Overall great place to go to.

Disappointing. For the price of the menu, my expectations were higher. Pasta dish arrived with unusual potato crisps on top. Menu was laminated. Music was at a level where conversation was diffult. Single women's toilet for a large restaurant. My partner is a veggie and the "open lasagna" was just a bowl of mushroom pasta. Service was inconsistent. Wine not poured etc. Give it a miss!

I will start with the positives: the food although pricey was lovely when we finally got it. The negatives: 11 adults were expected to sit at a table that would hold 8. When asked for another table I was met with “we might not have any other tables”. My response- there was literally no room for the other 3 unless they wanted us to sit on each others knee. They brought over a small table which did the job but not great when we had already pre booked in advance. To top off the table situation, the other two added tables to the booth were in complete darkness. We had to use our torches on our phones to look at our food. No one came near us for 40 mins after we sat down. Finally got our drinks ordered. 10 mins later got our wine but no wine glasses. Waited a further 10 minutes with no luck- a member of our party had to go to the bar and bring the wine glasses down. An hour and a half after sitting down to the table, we finally got our food order taken. No longer could order the starters we wanted as we didn’t have the time. Food came down at 8:05. One member ordered a steak medium to rare- steak came down medium to well done. Sent back. (This has happened on a previous visit however when the issue was resolved the steak was lovely) At 8:35 a gentleman requested the table back…30 minutes after we had got our main meal. Some members of the party still finishing their meal. No option for dessert and the requested birthday surprise which was agreed at the start of the visit. 2 members of our party spoke with who I believe was the manageress who apologised (the only apology we got the entire night) and gave them a £30 voucher. Our meal cost £550. A £30 voucher for the most horrendous service and table…… It has such potential but sadly was one of the worse nights at a restaurant I have experienced in a very very long time.

High quality food and large portions. As a long term veggie, I'm used to dull food, but here the veggie options were imaginative and just delicious. I left the restaurant stuffed to the gills. Went with the family. Solid options for the kids. My only criticism was that we were sat beneath a speaker and it was quite loud. Other than that, faultless. Looking forward to going back.

A brilliant night at Basalt, fabulous food, the best music by DJ JO and the bongos and trumpet...so much fun. Fantastic food and well looked after by Kennedy and Brian. Best spot in Portrush.

Had a beautiful meal with friends in Basalt. This was my first time to eat in the Restaurant. Was worried after booking when I read the reviews. The restaurant was busy, great atmosphere, good service and lovely food. I had paid a deposit on booking. When the bill arrived deposit hadn’t been deducted but when highlighted was quickly sorted. Overall lovely evening. Would have no hesitation in returning again.

20% off wasn’t applied to bill, despite offer being advertised if we ordered before 7. Food was a bowl of slop, linguine in soup, with mashed (?) prawns (aka prawn linguine). Partner had steak which was burnt and cubed potatoes raw in the centre. Just avoid. Running on an old reputation which is fast dwindling….

We dine here once or twice a month. The staff are always super friendly and we cannot fault the food. The steak for 2 is out of this world, a real treat and never disappointed. Thanks again, will see you soon.

Terrible food but good service Burgers are below average and any sides are bland. “Garlic” Mushrooms completely inedible. Service was good though hence why it gets 2 stars instead of 1.

First time going here for very special occasion which was stated on booking ..no mention of the occasion by any staff. Food was good but starters state they are sharing plates so for at least 2 sharing...ok if people like same things. Were seated right across from kitchen service area which was extremely busy and loud...hearing chef shout out orders to staff/table numbers etc...couldn't hear eachother talk!! not the most enjoyable/relaxing. At one point one of our party actually received a decibel warning on their phone!!

Arrived 10 minutes early to be told the restaurant didn't open until 5.30 and asked to leave and return - at 8 months pregnant I didn't think it would be much to expect a seat at the bar/waiting area. That set the tone for the evening. Food average, husband ask for rare steak and was served a well done steak. We were not told of the steak deal until AFTER ordering. No drinks order taken on being seated - we had to chase this. Following our meal I asked for decaffeinated coffee but shockingly it wasnt on offer.Toilets hadn't been cleaned either. Very disappointing.

Good Restaurant All Over Portrush 👌👌👌👌👌

We had a lovely meal here. We were a party of 6. Warmly welcomed by Arnie and Hayley. Staff were very attentive, starters were fab. Sharing steaks were really good.

Filet was amazing, sunset view from behind the bar was to die for. Best seat in the house is corner of the kitchen bar. Slow initial drink order and check after meal but we hardly noticed with the great entertainment in the kitchen.

Currently sitting at a noisy table beside the bar, arrived 1 hour and 25 mins ago and still have not seen a meal. Myself and my partner have managed to get through an entire bottle of wine before our food has arrived. Ridiculous wait time for food that is not worth it. Service was mediocre at best, took more than 30 minutes and for my partner to go to the bar twice to get a glass of water.

We visited basalt last Sunday night. The night was completely spoilt by the behaviour of what I assume was the head chef. Not only did he behave like he was Gordon Ramsey shouting continuously at the other chefs to bring food to the pass but the way he treated the service staff was shocking. There were 5 or 6, I assume relatively new Indian waiting staff. He swore at them and spoke to them in such a demeaning manor. All the customers around the open kitchen were in complete shock. I had a fillet steak pasta that was on as a special and it wasn't nice. The rest of our groups food was grand. I have always been a big fan of the Ramore complex and Sunday night was a big disappointment.

Arrived at the restaurant at 7.30, was absolute chaos, uncleared tables, overcrowded bar and table not ready. Brought onto the balcony and asked to wait. Other tables also waiting. After 45 minutes with no-one updating or telling us when to expect the table, we requested a refund of deposit which they did and we left. Group beside us had to wait a further hour for food. Its a shame as the menu looked good, but they were clearly overbooked, understaffed and not even the basics were adhered to.

Was here on Saturday night with friends. Food was excellent and cocktails was even better probably the best I’ve ever had. The restaurant was jam packed, to the point I felt uncomfortable we were seated in a very small table at the back of the restaurant. Service was slow we ready expected that as it was packed to the doors. I actually felt extremely sorry for the staff, completely rushed off there feet. Not somewhere you go for a quiet meal or catch up with friends we couldn’t hear ourselves think over the extremely loud music. It was like eating your dinner in the middle of a nightclub. Saying that the food and cocktails were that good id go back but definitely not on a busy Saturday night.

Way below average. Two people dining, four courses, only one of which was enjoyable... The Crispy Squid gets a thumbs up. For the thumbs down: Pil Pil Prawns - Submerged in sauce, more like a soup, possibly to hide how tiny and underwhelming the "Portavogie" prawns were? Served with garlic bread which, by the time it got to me, had just turned soggy in the soupy sauce. Steak Pappardelle - Described as "served medium" but arrived way overcooked and definitely not a prime cut of meat, lacked any real flavour. Prawn Linguine - The worst of the lot... Despite not stating this on the menu, the linguine arrived with a bag of CHEESE AND ONION CRISPS dumped into it. I've never seen anything like it, what was the chef thinking? My partner had to dig all of these soggy crisps out before eating her Tomato & Chilli & Cheese & Onion linguine... Service was so-so... We had ordered a drink each when we sat down along with a bottle of wine but had to request the bottle of wine again after being served our main despite having 2 empty glasses on the table. The bottle was then just dumped on the table with 2 glasses a few moments later. Wouldn't return and indeed advised family to cancel their booking for Tuesday night.

Visited Basalt for the first time on Saturday night. My wife had booked a table well in advance and had paid a £20 deposit, when we arrived we were seated at a bench looking into the kitchen area where the chef's were preparing the starters and where there was a door behind us that everytime someone either went out or in we got a gust of wind round us,waitress explained that they had no table for us but when I asked her about a table for 2 that was vacant behind us she said rather abruptly that she had people for this table. Ordered the rump steak and my wife ordered the chilli chicken pasta, when they arrived the rump steak was served with a grilled tomato and a half roast onion, both were stone cold as if they had been taken out of a fridge but the steak itself was beautiful. The chilli chicken pasta tasted like it was a tomato and basil pasta and was very bland and when I asked the waitress about this she explained that there chilli chicken pasta was made to taste more like tai red curry which was a bit baffling but we said no more about it. Overall not a very good first experience of Basalt.

First off, staff were fantastic. Beyond that there wasn’t a lot to love at Basalt. It’s branded as modern tapas but the food is just the usual thing you’d get in any Ramore restaurant: burgers, pasta dishes etc. There is an area to sit outside but if you seated anywhere near the door in or out to that area it slams shut with such force that, without exaggeration, it shakes your table. I don’t understand why there isn’t a easy-close piston on the door. The food was tasty, the staff were great but there’s nothing to differentiate this from any other Ramore restaurant and it absolutely isn’t modern tapas.

I unexpectedly had one of my best parties this year at Basalt! A group of friends from London and myself spent the weekend in Port Stewart, and ended up having dinner in Portrush one of the nights. After dinner, we walked into Basalt, not expecting more than a quick drink before returning home. That's when the the seemingly impossible happened: we were received by the contagious party fever of patrons and staff alike, tearing up the dance floor to the sound of disco music, led by the now legendary Willie Gregg. The dj was also trully incredible, second to none I have listened to over the years in London, delivering a masterful music trip. We danced, shouted, jumped and had the time of our lives. Honorable mention to Willie's colleague with the flashlight, whose name I didn't learn, and who added personality to the whole night. Fantastic!

First time trying Basalt. I had booked a table for Friday night way in advance. When my partner and I got there we were taken to our 'table'. Which was a ledge looking into the kitchen. Not a good set up at all. Going for a romantic meal, it is nice to face your partner, not sit at a counter, like a diner were you'd have burger and fries. I believe it was close to a hot plate too because the heat was unreal and the smell of cooking oil felt like it was sticking to us. Thankfully we moved tables after making a few requests to do so. Food was great though. Heat in the restaurant was too much though, made me feel a little sick. A diner next to me had a pocket fan on the table.

Wish I'd gone to the fish and chips around the corner.

Fantastic views over the bay and a very tight yet interesting menu. The focus is on meat, which is butchered and cooked to perfection ( especially the Piri piri chicken) although we had the roast cauliflower which was outstanding. Our minor issue was slightly undercooked fries/ chips but it was dealt with in a most professional manor so we remained extremely happy with our restaurant choice tonight.

I wanted to like this place but I can’t lie. The overall experience was average at best. The best part was my company! When we arrived it did feel cold. We ended up waiting a while for the drinks… And about 50 minutes for our starters. The staff wasn’t attentive. Food was ok. The menu is interesting but nothing jumps out screaming “pick me”! Sorry Basalt, you have some more work to do!

We had reserved a table with a view by the window, and we were given a table at the entrance to the kitchen... a misunderstanding. we were given menus, and then no one was interested in us for 20 minutes... when we finally placed the order, one of us received the dish and the other had to wait another 10 minutes... so by the time we both received it, that dish was already cold. Lack of interest from the staff... at the very end we ordered desserts and found a thread in our clothes, of course we reported it... the only advantage was that we didn't have to pay for dessert. The food was perfect, it was really tasty but the rest was terrible.

Treated my other half to dinner at Basalt for his birthday, he booked thinking it was still tapas, we didn’t mind too much that they have changed their menu though. Greeted by a very smiley friendly lady on arrival and taken to a lovely window...

Incredible food, beautiful variety of flavours. Brilliant customer service and flexibility in the face of quite stressful circumstances provided by my partner ;) ...he triumphed!! Can't recommend this high enough

We booked this restaurant for New Years Eve several weeks in advance, and received an email confirming the reservation. We arrived on time and the place was packed but that was to be expected on NYE and after about half an hour everyone was seated....

waited hours for food....... was burnt and got some of the orders wrong. not at all worth the price.

The restaurant was cold both in terms of temperature and atmosphere. The icy North Atlantic blast that came in each time someone opened the door to the smoking terrace chilled to the bone. The table our party of 4 was barely big enough for 2. The service was slow and the food when it eventually arrived was not spectacular. Thankfully it was filling as after the wait, hunger had set in.

Great food, great service, reasonably priced, beautiful interior and a fantastic view. I couldn’t fault it. I highly recommend.

Shocking experience. Booked a table inside, was given a table outside in the freezing cold and wind instead. Ordered a drink.. 45 minutes later still not arrived.. After an hour finally got a bottle of wine (no cocktails or water that we ordered) after i went to the bar for it and wouldn’t leave until i got one - host was clearly out of his depth and asked me could i not see he was rushing around and sweating?! Terrible customer service. Side salad arrived by itself 40 minutes before the drinks as well.. no cutlery either. Ordered breads was told they ran out, ordered sea bass was told it ran out but they “found bread” we could have . Waitress told us she “didnt even work there so it was nothing to do with her” whatever that meant. The bill at the end had everything we hadn’t received plus more random items. Absolute mayhem… so many people exactly in the same position. Freezing cold, no food, no drinks, awful service… worse experience ever!!

First of all I wanna start by saying the staff were absolutely fantastic. We were late but still got seated and the staff while clearly very busy were attentive and did the best they could. It's just a shame that the "tapas" really let this place down. I can only assume that they used the word tapas because it sounds better than small plates but these are nothing compared to authentic Spanish tapas. Really really disappointing amd expensive which is a poor combination. My girlfriend and I could not eat some of the dishes they tasted off. I would say maybe we chose badly but there wasn't that much to choose from. Combine that with being served bread at the end of the meal and mediocre Patatas bravas which should be a staple of a tapas restaurant I would say this place is a insult to the word tapas. If I was rating just the food it would be a 1 star. Drinks were alright and staff very friendly but when you are charging premium prices you can't have rubbish food.

Poor service. We sat and wait for our order , nobody cares and in the end we only found out our order was missed! Finally the food arrived and no forks and plates. We ask it and again nobody came back when food is turning cold. We have to take it ourselves…worst dining experience though food is ok.
