The Salad Project

Hay, Powys
02/09/2020: Absolutely fantastic take away Mexican salad.. really good.. worth the queue.. very clean and safe feeling
30/07/2020: Highly recommend! Healthy, vegan and delicious food served by friendly gentleman. It's a proof it doesn't have to be fancy to be delicious.

Tomatitos Tapas Bar

Hay, Powys
02/09/2020: We were lucky enough to find this little gem . The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was authentic Spanish and all four of us enjoyed every bite. We wouldn't hesitate to return.
01/09/2020: We visited on 27th August with our son and daughter-in-law. We hadn't booked but had a drink in the lovely little back garden while we waited for a table. All the tapas we ordered were brilliant. Piping hot and served on recyclable plates. Staff were really welcoming and friendly. Fantastic value and all covid guidelines followed. After being out in the pouring rain all day it was lovely to spend an evening in "Sunny Spain". We'll definitely go again when were in the area.

Hay Conservative Club

Hay, Powys
28/08/2020: Sunday dinner is full on, plenty of it and always well cooked with help yourself vegetables. Selection of meats usually beef, lamb, chicken and pork for Sunday and a good selection of steak, fish ,chicken, curry Tec.
28/07/2020: We often ate at the Con Club prior to lockdown and were never disappointed; excellent food, generous portions and bargain prices.During the lockdown they have operated a very successful takeaway service which has given us all something to look forward to. Friday night is fish and chip night and Sunday’s wouldn’t be complete without a Martinho’s delicious roast. As the doors open again to table service we look forward to booking a table and enjoying a drink or two with your wonderful food.Thank you for keeping us sane and giving us something to look forward to during these crazy times.

The Globe at Hay

Hay, Powys
11/09/2020: The food here is always fantastic! Good quality and value :) Had delicious felafel today but Sunday brunch is also a treat! Will be back again soon.
02/08/2020: Staff were lovely and welcoming. Sitting outside in the garden was lovely as well. However, we booked brunch and waited 40 minutes, when the food came it was all cold and the egg was overcooked. Looking at previous reviews, this may be uncharacteristic but we did not feel it was value for money.

Pencraig diner,

Hay, Powys
11/08/2020: Have visited here twice now whilst commuting to work in South Wales, and doesn't disappoint!, Had a Full English with a cup of tea and toast (included) and was just what the doctor ordered, the bacon I found to be their pièce de résistance, proper thick cut and no expense spared. All in all tasted great, value for money and yes everytime I am working down here now I'll make sure I stop here for a bite to eat.Menu wise, they have a variety for everyone, The place is clean and tidy and the owners are friendly and welcoming. The only sad thing I suppose is that Roadside cafes are dwindling in numbers due to the McD's/Greggs explosion so make sure if your heading down the A40 you stop here at Pencraig Diner and ignore the others dotted wont regret it. It's on the left about a mile or so before the Welsh border

Restaurant at The Old Black Lion

Hay, Powys, 45-60£
09/09/2020: Not much to choose from in Hay. So we went in for dinner. Best burger I've had in a long time. Juicy, tasty.
04/09/2020: We chose to go here after reading previous reviews. It’s not your run of the mill pub grub which is what we wanted. My husband had the ham terrine to start followed by the Stilton and walnut soufflé and then the chocolate torte.I had the ribeye steak followed by the amaretto parfait. The food was delicious. It’s one of the best steaks that I have had in a long time.Reading the reviews we believed that you could only eat in the snug if you went with your dog so we left her at home. However, others strolled into the restaurant with theirs so maybe we were mistaken. Check when you book!

St John's Place

Hay, Powys

Bistro @ The Swan at Hay

Hay, Powys
21/08/2020: Sadly we were disappointed. It was lovely sitting in the garden but the food was pretty average and portions small.I had the beetroot ravioli which was dry, with a small goats cheese salad. My husband had sirloin steak which was below par. This is the area for great Herefordshire beef.My mum enjoyed her burger and Dad his lamb. The brownie and sticky toffee pudding were good.It was my mum’s 85th birthday and I had asked if a small cake could be provided but was told that ‘cakes weren’t their thing’ which was fair enough but some mention would have been a nice touch.
30/07/2020: So pleased that the Swan has now reopened following the lockdown. Service is at present in their beautiful gardens with tables safely positioned to allow social distancing. As from next week I understand the restaurant will also be open. Last week we had their gorgeous Sunday lunch which we found faultless. The roast beef was succulent and served to the customers’ liking. Plenty of fresh vegetables and piping hot gravy make my meal perfection. Today we tried their new pizza which were large and delicious. I would always recommend the Swan, the food is great and you will be guaranteed the warmest welcome from Adrian, Vanessa, Dave, Meg and gang.

The Old Electric Shop

Hay, Powys, <20£
12/09/2020: Really delicious cauliflower dhal and bean quesadillas enjoyed in a sunny spot on the pavement. Very friendly staff who let us order from the brunch menu even though we were 10 mins late and brought everything out very efficiently, even lending us a tea towel as a makeshift bib as we’d forgotten my son’s. Only reason for dropping one star is the flat white was a bit heavy on the milk, would give it 4.5 if I could!
12/09/2020: Me and my partner stopped for lunch here and it was seriously some of the best veggie food we've had. I had their mushroom burger with blue cheese and my partner had the curry dahl with rotti. Was excellent!

Three Tuns

Hay, Powys, 30-45£
22/08/2020: We ordered the Ragstone, Margarita and Puttanesca pizzas and no one in our family was disappointed. A fabulous takeaway option or enjoy on the premises. Even waiting for your order is great, because you can relax in the bar with a pint of Butty Bach. A jewel in the crown of Hay-on-Wye...
16/08/2020: The staff are most helpful if slightly scatty but the sensibly small menu provides enough choice to enjoy a meal out. We are in a lovely upstairs room - worth requesting.

Hay, Powys
28/07/2020: Had a takeaway, it was okay, but not the best we have had, butterfly chicken were rather dry, the garlic bread lacked flavour and the peri chips, lacked spice.
25/03/2020: Really good meal had here. Piping hot when it arrived, and not too much of a wait. Premises are clean and tidy, and the staff friendly.

Blue Boar Pub

Hay, Powys
05/09/2020: Excellent food and Excellent service good friendly staff made us feel at home will defiantly visit next time we are back in Hay-on-Wye
02/09/2020: Took my family here on a 'eat out to help out' meal whilst on holiday in Hay on Wye. All the staff were very accommodating and the food was great. All the staff were particularly great with our two kids who really enjoyed their puddings and having a joke with Jack (who really deserves a mention for his flexibility and positivity!) Really lovely little pub

Shepherds Ice Cream

Hay, Powys
28/08/2020: Some may find it a bit strange that ice cream it made using sheeps milk but give it a try with yummy. Think there were 16 different flavour. Well worth trying.
27/08/2020: Thrilled to find an ice cream today which my 2 year old with multiple allergies could have. Soooo nice to be able to give her something other than sorbet. Staff were amazing at checking it was safe too and were just so kind and friendly. Thank you!!!! :)

The Sandwich Cellar

Hay, Powys
04/09/2020: Found this place by accident when walking round Hay on Wye. We had coffee, a cheese and ham panini, baked ham in harvester roll, followed by bread pudding and chocolate brownie, all were fresh and excellent, even the dog had a treat. It was so good we returned 3 hours later. The staff are very friendly and have good safety measures in place. Strongly recommend.Chris Vesey
13/08/2020: They do a really good selection of rolls here. We had cheese & pickle, ham salad, ham & coleslaw and beef. All good. Prices were £3 to £3.50 (if I recall). Also tried their local fruitcake (£2). Lovely.
