The Foveran Restaurant

Kirkwall West and Orphir, Orkney Islands, 30-45£
05/04/2019: This is the best restaurant in Orkney by miles. The building is lovely; crisp and contemporary, but comfortable, stylish and welcoming. The simple, muted colours compliment and enhance the wonderful ever-changing view of sea, cliffs, sky and hills. Sitting here for an evening watching the sunset is a joy.
31/03/2019: We had a fantastic stay at the Foveran. Orkney certainly isn't short of a good view and the Foveran have really capitalised by this by having ceiling to floor windows in their restaurant, allowing you to look out over the beautiful Scapa Bay.

The Strynd Tea Room

Kirkwall East, Orkney Islands
23/02/2019: Discovered the Strynd tea shop a few days ago, just a street away from St Magnus Cathedral so in the centre of the town. Very relaxing place for delicious home bakes including the renowned cinnamon rolls and extremely good coffee.
08/01/2019: Have used this tea room on many occasions and was never dissapointed. It was a surprise to see new owners on my visit today.

Hamnavoe

Stromness and South Isles, Orkney Islands
18/02/2019: We were thrilled about dining in a Michelin rated restaurant , a hidden gem in little Stromness!
06/11/2018: An efficient and comfortable service. There is food available on board, the breakfast is good, and the fish are chips looked great. Sleeping accommodation is fine and I would recommend sleeping on board if you are on the first sailing from Orkney

Kirkwall East, Orkney Islands, <20£
09/04/2019: Delicious food & lovely friendly service. We all had a different dish & each one was delicious in it’s own way.
21/03/2019: We had a beef lasagne and some tortellini. Impressed to see gluten free pasta is an option, too. The staff were lovely - prompt and attentive, and the place was spotless.

19/04/2019: We had a great night at Helgi's! Nice selection of food on the menu which was all really tasty, and fabulous selection of Orkney gins and beers! The service was great too with a good bit of banter. Highly recommended. :)
17/04/2019: Really excellent vegan food options and fantastic cocktails. Lovely and cosy with a fire. Really helpful and friendly staff.

The Shore Restaurant

Kirkwall West and Orphir, Orkney Islands
31/03/2019: We had previously been into the bar at The Shore and from that I was surprised that their food kept cropping up on 'best food in Kirkwall' lists (the bar part is a pretty standard Kirkwall pub).
21/03/2019: Whenever my wife and I visit her mother in Kirkwall we have supper in this excellent restaurant. We usually have the Scallops, well prepared and served with a smile. They have a first class selection of wines and beers. Their prices are very reasonable indeed. Should you be in Kirkwall on vacation, visiting family, or for any other reason, this fine restaurant is the place to go for lunch or supper.

Julia's Cafe

Stromness and South Isles, Orkney Islands
17/04/2019: We were really impressed with the vegan options, and Claire was very helpful in getting us well fed! Definitely recommended.
07/04/2019: We stopped here for welcome tea and cakes on a very wet, cold and blustery day. Glad to see they had a gluten-free crunchy cookie. Clean, friendly enough and nice artwork on the walls but decor felt a little bland.

Ferry Inn

Stromness and South Isles, Orkney Islands, 20-30£
17/04/2019: I stayed here with eight friends while we walked the Saint Magnus way. It is 55 miles of pretty strenuous walking. The Ferry Inn was a superb place to come back to every night. There is lots of hot water, a substantial breakfast, excellent bar meals and above all friendly, helpful and well presented staff who kept the place clean and the weary pilgrims well fed and watered.
11/04/2019: Whilst we were wee bit uncertain about eating here, it was empty, we did not regret choice.

Orkney Brewery

West Mainland, Orkney Islands
11/03/2019: What a great place for a brewery! It's in a scenic bit of the mainland en route to Skara Brae (depending on which way you're travelling). The staff here were fantastic and so friendly. The food was great, too - we had veggie burgers with fries and salad. They also offer 1/2 or 1/3 pints of the beers on tap if you fancy tasting different kinds. The day we visited they had Dark Island, Corncrake and Red McGregor on tap. Their Dragonhead cake is pretty special, too!
23/12/2018: We pulled into the car park half expecting this place we’d heard about to be closed and were so pleased to be wrong! It was open and a friendly young lady made us feel very welcome. My husband loves real ales so we had to give it a try and he enjoyed the ale. The food was delicious - we both had the 3 course deal, I had the humous to start, vegetarian lasagne for main and the xmas pud for dessert. My husband had the nachos, scampi & chips and also the xmas pud. Everything was very good. The waitress was lovely and friendly even though we were the last customers to arrive and leave. A wonderful find, an old converted school, the tables have been made to look like school desks with the inkwells cleverly used to hold the condiment sachets. Lots of historic information and memorabilia all around. Very tastefully decorated, modern but so respectful of the past. Gorgeous. We were so pleased to find this brilliant place and will be returning.

Beneth'ill Cafe

Stromness and South Isles, Orkney Islands
18/04/2019: Cold day, so woodburner and home made lentil soup were very welcome. The soup was so nice I nearly had a second bowl but went for a scone instead. While the scone was fine, the soup was better! My mate enjoyed her apple crumble and custard. Service was excellent - although we were the only customers- and it's a lovely little place, in a beautiful setting. Have something here before or after Rackwick beach - but do go there as it's a truly beautiful place. Beneth'ill just missed out on a five star rating from us as my lunching companions aren't keen on individually wrapped butter pats.... but the soup will live long in the memory, as will the white tailed sea eagles and Rackwick Beach.
10/04/2019: Visited with daughter and husband today and needed warmed up. Had a beautiful casserole, mince n tatties and beetroot and feta salad between us with crumble and ice cream to follow. Good quality ingredients, well cooked in a lovely setting and served with a smile. Great.

Lynnfield Hotel

Kirkwall East, Orkney Islands
18/04/2019: Five night stay in this comfy unique and interesting hotel, full of fascinating pictures books and furniture. Our room Odinstone was very pleasant not ultra luxurious but more than adequate, comfortable bed and sofa, the room was clean and housekeeping were very efficient.. The bath room was well equipped with shower and bath, lovely toiletries supplied.
06/01/2019: Having a special occasion to celebrate we couldn't have chosen a better venue with the superb lounge and a roaring log fire, quite apart from the candle lit evening meal. Having checked the menus in advance, we had made special requests and these were honoured. The food was well cooked and well presented.

Cafelolz

Kirkwall West and Orphir, Orkney Islands
07/04/2019: Lovely find in Kirkwall. Popped in for coffee and saw the delicious scones so had to have some. Lovely staff, very welcoming, coffee amazing and scones the best I have had in a long time. Travel across Scotland all the time and this is probably one of the best little coffee shops I have been to for a while. Will highly recommend.
20/11/2018: I visited in when the Cafe was (temporarily? newly?) situated in the Strynd. It's pretty much a cafe in an old living room. Very quirky. Tables are pretty close together. Service was warm and friendly, haggis paninni was amazing, coffee and cake of a high standard. Would certainly go back.

The Real Food Cafe and Restaurant

Kirkwall East, Orkney Islands
13/04/2019: I went in and I was wanting to leave after seeing the prices!! You guys rip people off, £2.95 for a half chocolate covered biscuit! . I only stayed as the people we were with insisted we stayed as they were buying. The taps in the men's toilets are falling off the sink. We'll not be eating in again.
13/04/2019: Clean facility Friendly staff Good service Just need a slightly more child friendly menu. Choices are aimed at older people
