Saray Restaurant

Plasnewydd, Cardiff
16/12/2018: We went to Saray restaurant as a group of friends for a small catch up and social gathering. Though the food was OK. Not extra special nor poor, we were put off by the rude service we experienced. We understood the restaurant was busy, but we were rushed to order, and during our meal one of the waiters came and said are you finished while gesturing to take plates away (there was only one person who had finished at this time), this made us feel slightly awkward as it's not the type of thing you prepare yourself for when paying for a meal at a highly priced restaurant. Unfortunately, it didn't stop there. A second waitress came to our table and again attempted to take the plates asking rudely if we're finished. We replied negatively once more, however at this point it was clear, the waitresses merely wanted to recycle the table and get it booked out to the next batch of unsuspecting punters. I've eaten at many restaurants around the UK, however this experience has to be up there as being from the most frank and least subtle "eat up and get out (even if it means not quite chewing your food)". Quite a shame. Definitely will not be returning as there are many other fantastic restaurants on city road who do not view their customers as merely carrying pound signs on their fore heads.
11/12/2018: From the moment we arrived to the food and the desserts and the amazing Tea.. Wow Service was perfect and good was piping hot just as we request half and half portions!!!

Casanova

Cathays, Cardiff
08/01/2019: I always like to try and fit in a visit to Casanova’s when I visit Cardiff and managed to sneak in another visit this time around! Family run authentic (very good) Italian, excellent wines and great service. Love this place; will be back!
06/01/2019: I visited therefor lunch with some friends just before Christmas, and despite the fact that the restaurant was jam-packed, the service and food was absolutely wonderful and all of the staff were incredibly friendly. Really delicious and authentic Italian food- I had Venetian sardines for carter and rage for main, and both were excellent, as was the wine. We visited on a very cold day, and one of the waiters noticed that my hands were cold and brought me a glass of hot water wrapped in a napkin to warm them, which was such a kind and thoughtful thing to do. Very highly recommended all round.

Madeira

Cathays, Cardiff, <20£
19/12/2018: Deceptively large restaurant. Great menu of traditional Portuguese dishes - including the skewers from the ceiling which is a fun approach. The service is brilliant and great value for money.
14/12/2018: Such a shame that we will be losing this restaurant soon. They have a replacement pop up in town, but this one is so rustic and authentic and one of the best places in town. Low lighting and black brick walls. Open fires and ceiling hooks to hold the espetadas (which are AMAZING). Came here for our work Christmas party and it was just brilliant. Staff were fantastic and we didn't have to wait for anything. I would also recommend the Portuguese sauce with your meat. Veg and fried cauliflower come as standard. They even brought over maracas to celebrate a birthday! The only drawback was the dessert. I could take that or leave it.

11/11/2018: A group of retired colleges had a lovely lunch. It was excellent value at £10.95 for starter and main. Good choice of both. Tasty and plentyful and very attentive staff who knew all about food allergies which was very pleasing. Very popular place will be going again.

Istanbul Restaurant

Castle, Swansea, <20£
21/11/2018: We visited our cousins in Swansea and wanted to take them out for dinner. Istanbul was a great find. The food was delicious, plentiful, and fairly priced. The service couldn't have been better. It was a great evening out.
15/11/2018: Simple does it, and the menu is authentic, seems like true original recipes, but I do find it overpriced considering the didhed. Nice vibe, nice staff, but expensive.

Mediterranean

Oystermouth, Swansea
07/11/2018: We probably eat here at least fortnightly, and enjoy it every time. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, the menu has enough variety for our frequent visits, the meat is good quality, and it is reasonably priced.
07/11/2018: We have been here many times as a couple and with family. We decided this was the place to celebrate a large birthday and anniversary of a shared event here with 12 friends who live away from Swansea/Gower but have links here. We were not to be disappointed, everyone said it was excellent and was a great gem we'd chosen. Thank you to all at Mediterranean, you really made our night something special for us all

White Hart Village Inn

Llangybi Fawr, Monmouthshire, 20-30£
18/12/2018: Visited this beautiful country pub establishment. All decorated beautifully and very seasonal, we sat on a lovely little table by the roaring fire. We started with the mussels and expected a small portion I was extremely happy when a brimming bowl of steaming mussels arrived, they were cooked perfectly and were fantastic the mains were equally as delightful. Very reasonably priced and the hospitality was incredible and we have decided to visit again to try out more of the menu - definitely somewhere to dine if you are in the area.many thanks to the very friendly staff
09/12/2018: I read the reviews and expected a good experience. The service was somewhat slow but the main meal was good. However, the sweets were a disaster. We ordered apple tart to be presented with microwaved pastry, which was obviously then soft, and a small amount of custard which had obviously come from a tin and was likewise microwaved. In addition no one could find any real apple. The bread and butter pudding was a very small portion, again microwaved and the only thing to suggest it was bread and butter pudding in the first place was the presence of a couple of sultanas. At £5.90 a desert the quality was very poor. All this said, the place has a lot of character and the surroundings were very pleasant. There was even someone playing the piano as you dined. Overall we could be tempted to go back again but would certainly not bother having deserts.

La Cuina

Riverside, Cardiff
02/12/2018: Visited here on a voucher deal, 3 courses and a glass of fizz. Very pleasant atmosphere and staff. Starters were very well present and a decent size, the fish of the day was (turbot) quite small served with 4 slithers of potatoes, some grapes and garnish. I had the cheese board, which again was tasty but small. To be honest I was still hungry when we left. Would I go back? No.
12/11/2018: If I'm in the area I like to go here for Saturday lunch - the tapas is yummy and there's a good variety of flavoursome dishes. Our young son so looks forward to the ham croquettes and we love the Catalan sausages, boquerones and cod carpaccio (or actually, everything on the menu). The desserts are varied, well presented and with a delightful selection of flavours, and the wines are good - including the house wines if you only wish for a glass. The evening menu is accomplished too - have only eaten there in the evenings a few times but am always looking forward to the next time. The atmosphere is friendly and casual (if you want a rowdy beerhall, best try somewhere in the centre of town instead), and always welcoming.

The Light House Coffee Shop

Castle, Swansea
27/11/2018: What a wonderful find! A local shop run by volunteers selling as much local produce as possible. The home made pasties and cakes are amazing.
14/10/2018: Great little shop and cafe. Stopped here for a cuppa and a cheese and leek pasty (can recommend those!). Nice range of home made postcards for sale. Quite a revelation.

Wallys Kaffeehaus

Cathays, Cardiff

Zerodegrees - Cardiff

Cathays, Cardiff, >100£
03/12/2018: I've been to zero degrees twice now, once as a work function and again on a Wales rugby match day and both times staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food isn't the cheapest, but you really do get what you pay for. I've tried both the parma pizza and the chili steak and I'd reccommend both. The pizzas are huge, and the bases extra crispy. Well worth spending the little extra for!
28/11/2018: We came here for lunch on the Sunday after a Wales Rugby game and were initially concerned by how empty the restaurant was, that soon turned to confusion as the food (we each had mussels) and beer (one pale ale and one Mango beer) were delicious! We'd definitely recommend zerodegrees and would eat here again.

Wally's

Cathays, Cardiff
21/11/2018: How does this place, get coffee so right & chains coffee so wrong ! Great sausage platters as well !
