Madame Fromage

Cathays, Cardiff
15/07/2020: Have ordered two platters from here during lockdown and both have been amazing. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Excellent service too. Diolch yn fawr.
03/04/2020: Set at the top of the Victorian Arcade in Cardiff City Centre, Madame Fromage offers a wonderful array of local and international cheeses – as a cheese lover it is heaven! It also boasts a wonderful café where you can feast on lovely food (not all cheese based) and the food is delicious. In fact, I would say the food is way above average for café food. The staff are friendly knowledgeable and, well, just lovely!! Great selection and great food. When I visit the city of Cardiff I generally go there!! Don’t miss out – pay a visit!!

The Cricketers

Riverside, Cardiff, <20£
27/07/2020: We called on the off chance and Jamie was very obliging and found us a table outside, well distanced from any other groups. The Staff were excellent and chatted about being happy to be back in work. Jamie did advise that we would be better to book in advance in future, which we certainly will. The food and atmosphere were just what we needed on our first venture out since lockdown. Highly recommended!
25/07/2020: Lovely evening every time I been busy but I don't mind 😊 See you soon looking forward to it Back to normal 😊

De Courceys Manor

Pentyrch, Cardiff, 45-60£
09/03/2020: The Building was very impressive as we drove along the drive to the front entrance. The staff were friendly and welcoming and served as drinks on arrival. We were shown in to the Dining Room . The food was excellent and the table was decorated to a high standard. The guests on our table were very friend and we all had a very entertaining and enjoyable evening.
01/03/2020: We visited De Courceys for a Sunday lunch. We were well received. The bar is lovely with smiling faces happy to serve. Our order was taken at the bar. We were taken to our table. A very elegant set up of the dining room. Warm bread of different flavours served. Starters soon after arrived and drink orders did too. Then we had the main course. All food was hot and served promptly. Desserts followed. Amazing and prompt service with smiling faces. Very nice highly recommended if you like a relaxing Sunday lunch with lovely views.

The Pot

Cathays, Cardiff
07/08/2020: Menu is outstanding, so many choices and not your typical boring Italian menu. I had the pulled pork gnocchi which was absolutely divine, thinking of going again next week! Fab friendly staff and would love to call ourselves regulars at this restaurant.
07/08/2020: Great food and service all around. Had the beef carpaccio and Cannelloni Nero which were unreal. Best food in a long time.

Butetown, Cardiff
30/05/2020: This restaurant is a little bit different but all in a good way!The pork dripping dish with bread was really good and the Polish beers were really nice. It’s the decor and the atmosphere on top of the good food that makes it somewhere really worth a visit. Very chilled and relaxed and you could have just whiled away the afternoon here.Service was good and everything was very reasonably priced.Definitely warrants a return visit.
27/04/2020: The place is ok. Staff are very horrible and rude. Food is alright but once I found a hair in my dish😐 never vsiting again.

Cote Brasserie - Cardiff Central

Cathays, Cardiff
25/05/2020: Nice but busy place in central Cardiff, sat outside to enjoy fresh air. Nice menu , good food but they attempted to overcharge us to the tune of 9 GBP !! The waiter, who had the persona of probably being manager quickly backpedaled when we refused to pay that incorrect amount and brought out correct amount after we indicated what meals and drinks we had! A real cheek and put a damper on day!
17/05/2020: Cote in Cardiff has always been a favourite restaurant of myself and my partner. Good quality food at reasonable prices. One of the things we miss during the Covid-19 crisis. I was amazed to discover a Cote at Home option where a selection of their meals were available for home delivery. We ordered a meal with them, together with a selection of meats from their butchery. Great success and a wonderful treat for us. As a bonus the pork medallion from the butchery was one of the best pieces of pork I have ever tasted. I really recommend this service as a bit of a special treat.

Science Cream

Cathays, Cardiff, <20£
15/03/2020: Amazingly yummy can’t wait to go back again soon Very intriguing and fascinating. If you haven’t been you need to go
16/02/2020: Science cream is a fantastic find, offers the most fantastic and interesting ice creams. Can't wait for it to be open everyday in the summer!

Pettigrew Tea Rooms

Cathays, Cardiff
05/04/2020: My husband and I had a late lunch/early dinner at the Pettigrew Tea Room after spending the day exploring Cardiff Bay, walking the Barrage and returning to Bute Park by water taxi. The Pettigrew Tea Room is near the water taxi stop. Tea for two included 3 full sandwiches,a scone, beverage and choice of cake for each of us. We chose ham, roast beef and smoked salmon as our fillings.Delicious and very filling! We saved our cake for later. The tea room was quite busy as there was a rugby match scheduled later in the day. The service was a bit disorganized.
09/03/2020: Been there several times in the last year or so, always a lovely atmosphere and good food and drinks. Noticed several people sharing the mixed sandwich & cakes stand which looked lovely. The staff are very friendly and never a long wait for food etc.

Plasnewydd, Cardiff
07/03/2020: Excellent is the right word for this restaurant; unbelievable food, friendly staff, PRETTY food(if anyone is impressed by that as much as I am) and pretty ambience and so freaking tasty. After visiting 3 times and trying from healthy to vegan junk food, I can say that they nail everything.
19/02/2020: I'd been meaning to book Anna-Loka for some time after seeing it on Dirty Vegan and reading the positive reviews about the food there. I never did quite get around to it though, until now. My partner and I have recently gone vegetarian, so I finally booked us a table for our first vegan experience and it didn't disappoint. We had the sharing platter for our starter and the menanam burger for our main. It was quite simply delicious! The deserts were great too. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the service very swift. We left the restaurant feeling very content and will definitely be visiting again. Well done, Adam, you've created a fantastic little restaurant here!

Shaam Nights

Plasnewydd, Cardiff, <20£
28/03/2020: We ordered via deliveroo, due to the virus, however we were not disappointed. The mix grill platter for 5 was top notch in flavour. The shaam nights cocktail was like eating a rainbow, a burst of flavours. Will definitely go when virus situation has gone
06/03/2020: Can't go wrong with Shaam Night ....Lovely Atmosphere and very welcoming staff.Reasonably priced most of the Main dishes £10.50.I ordered Drinks, Starters, Main course and Hot mint tea to finish with.Every single of them was prepaid with high standards. Thanks Dr Dadam for Looking after us and making our evening wonderful.See you soon Cheers.

Urban Tap House

Cathays, Cardiff
16/04/2020: They have 10 - 20 beers, mostly from their brewery on tap. The menu focused on burgers. Knowing I would be here for a long visit, I tried a low-alcohol beer for the first time - I was very surprised at how good it tasted. The other full-strength beers were also very good (Pump Up the Jam & Lazy Boy). I ordered a chicken sandwich (BFC) and it took a while to arrive but I think it was just bad timing. I would go back.
12/03/2020: I think tiny rebel is a good brewery. With a very relaxed vibe in their place in Cardiff a visit is recommended. I like the way they let us try before we buy. and the beer are well tasty

New York Deli

Cathays, Cardiff
30/07/2020: I used to frequent this place whilst studying my MFA in Cardiff, back when it was in the shop opposite! My daughter is also studying art in Cardiff and we decided to take a family road trip one weekend in Feb to visit her. Check in and make sure she’s eating well, not just smoking dope and dropping acid. My wife says (judges) she’s a chip off the old block, personally I think she’s a hypocrite the way she can make two bottles of Rioja magically disappear most evenings. Carrying on with the family disputes, my daughter wanted to go to some place because she’s a vegan. I can’t recall the name but it sounded bland so I suggested we eat where I wanted for once. After an embarrassing back and forth on the street and a drawn out sigh from my wife, I decided to take a trip down memory lane to the New York Deli!“BUT ITS SO MEATY THERE DAD!”, my daughter moaned (non stop I’ll add!) but I remember an old friend Angela who was veggie who used to rant and rave about the veggie options. When we arrived we were greeted by the same old furniture I’d slump over, still “uplifted” from the night before. The same smell of freshly cooked goods wafting through the air, luring is in like the pied pipers melodies. The staff donned impressive beards and a polite professional manner. I’ll confess, at first arrival I thought it had been taken over by hipsters who would serve me some slop in a napkin and charge me for the pleasure. It was wrong of me to think this. The service was still as excellent as I remember, if not better. We were asked questions about how hungry we were and guided through the menu accordingly with lots of helpful suggestions. Despite having a large queue behind us they were very personable and attentive, especially with my wife who is often like a deer in headlights when ordering food. I had my old favourite, a New York Hoggie. The pastrami was better than I remembered and it was packed to the high heavens with Pastrami, cheese, coleslaw and gurkins. My daughter was elated with the choice of vegan options and even had her own server, who specifically used a different side of the counter dedicated to vegan food. She had a vegan version of the New York on rye bread (She even admitted that I’d made a great choice of restaurant! Which is about as rare as a Neil Diamond bootleg vinyl from spillers!) Always keen to try new things, I had a bite of it and could hardly tell the difference! My son had a club sandwich that he almost finished, the rest he ate on the car journey home. Then finally, my wife (after what felt like several hours deciding) opted for a smoked salmon bagel, which “hit the spot”. High praise from Mrs. Rioja headache!I cant write a review of this place without mentioning the increase in price, it’s certainly crept up since the 90’s but what you get for your money is still far beyond what you’d receive in some soulless chain restaurant. The food is fresh and made to order. The staff seem genuinely committed to feeding you well rather than putting on a false smile and wishing they were dead. Even the decor of this place is great. It’s grown with age to, with pictures of people on the walls and various pieces they’ve obviously collected over the years. It’s clean but still feels welcoming, unlike places such as Cosy Club that are style over substance and dusty! I was very pleased to see the New York Deli still thriving, even after all these years. I was sad to read about the American lady selling the place, but the new owners have done an incredible job of improving it without ruining it. Long live the New York Deli!A great visit, can’t wait to visit Cardiff again after lockdown. Score 10/10
29/07/2020: So glad it's reopened! First one in months was so good. Usually go for something different every time (we're trying to get through the menu) and was lush again. Chose The Cardiff this time thinking would be easier to take away a cold sandwich but it was still massive. Really love the place, fresh bread and ingredients. The best!

Milk & Sugar

Cathays, Cardiff

Chance & Counters

Cathays, Cardiff
03/03/2020: My boyfriend and I spent a wonderful Tuesday afternoon here this week! We received gift cards for Christmas and decided that today would be the day to spend them.We are both huge fans of board games, and so this cafe/bar/board game den was a total treat to behold. We were warmly received by the host who concisely explained how the whole thing worked. A £5 charge to cover our 4 hour slot at the cafe and that £5 would include us playing as many board games as we wished! We were seated at a table of our choice and placed orders for coffee and a Coke float which were prompt to arrive. The host was extremely knowledgeable about all the games that they had in stock and after chatting with me and hearing about the other games I enjoyed at home, he was nice enough to suggest others that might like.We settled on 2 games to play while we drank coffee and ate our food: rats to riches and Pandemic! My boyfriend had the buttermilk fried chicken on a crunchy ciabatta and I had the mushroom and leek toastie. Both came with fried and were absolutely incredible! We had actually planned to go and game for a little bit and then head to a nearby Wetherspoons... and we are SO glad that we didn’t. The atmosphere was friendly and the chap did not mind one bit when we asked for a little help with the game we were playing. He was incredibly knowledgeable and was not patronising at all when he explaining how the game worked and what we had misunderstood form the rule book. He periodically checked in us to make sure we were happy and to ask is if we wanted any more food/drinks/help. He was even very accommodating and patient when there always a little trouble with the gift cards. Overall a massively fun afternoon and we are hoping to spend another afternoon or two whiling away the hours with good coffee, better food and exceptional service from the staff! (All while indulging in a good bit of gaming!) You’ll see us again Chance and Counters!
26/02/2020: We visited on a Friday, we bought a wriggle deal which was great. The staff were super friendly and so knowledgeable, their passion for games shone through. A special mention to Matthew who helped us loads and was patient whilst explaining the rules. We will be returning for sure.

The Glassworks Pub

Cathays, Cardiff
06/03/2020: we went here on 12 feb for dinner before going to the new theatre. we were treated like royalty. yes you order at the bar but it was service with a smile from start to finish. the food is brought to your table along with everything you need. the food was absolutely delicious I had maccaronie cheese the best I have found when out.we all enjoyed our experience and would recommend a visit if you are in cardiff
05/03/2020: We stopped in Glassworks after Castle visit to celebrate St David’s Day . We were recommended it for good food and lots of space as we had 2 little ones and a pram.Bar staff need training on the menu. Some of our party ordered burgers with a drink for £1.00. Was told only soft drinks although the menu stated differently. So paid the normal price for drinks not using the offer. When we paid was told by the other bar staff that was wrong no offer to change the order.Food was good. When served no serviettes. Ask the same bar staff for some . Met with a shrug and they are over there with the cutlery.Pub was very quiet so no excuse to be helpful.Disappointed visit
