Big Chill House

Caledonian, Islington
05/09/2020: I am literally about to leave this place, and all I can say is that my boyfriend and I had the best experience ever. The waitresses were super nice, always making sure we had enough to drink and eat, food was absolutely delicious and the cocktail - oh my god they were really worth it. So, yes, big fan, we will definitely come back, and I definitely advice couples, groups of friends, families to come here and celebrate any occasion.
24/08/2020: This brunch was fabulous! There wasn't a moment in the 2 hour slot were my glass was empty - the service from the staff was amazing, they were so friendly - I haven't experienced service so great in a long time. The food was prompt (and really delicious), the rooftop was pretty and felt really safe (it started raining and we were in the uncovered section but within 20 seconds of the rain starting, they'd found us another table which was sheltered) and it was overall a great atmosphere. I will be suggesting it to all of my friends! X

The Spoke

Junction, Islington
18/09/2020: I’ve always loved Spoke. The food on the extensive menu is highly creative and always excellent. But - and given the rapidly rising infection rates this is important - there’s absolutely no visible effort to take any sensible Covid precautions. OK so you wait to be seated. Big deal. There’s little real spacing between tables and the place was pretty much full at lunchtime. But most significantly none of the staff wear masks. That might be ok if they kept their distance but all stand right up against the table when taking orders and lean across to pick up plates or glasses. The paper menus are clearly being used over and over again. I didn’t spot any hand sanitiser anywhere and the music is on loud so you have to raise your voice - something restaurants have been told to avoid as shouting spreads droplets etc. I’m not super paranoid but I’ve been into enough cafes and restaurants that are taking sensible precautions to be shocked when one isn’t bothering at all. Literally it’s like a little bubble from the pre-Covid world. For the sake of staff as well as customers Spoke needs to get its act together. I’ve been a regular since it opened. I’d love to support it through these difficult times but I expect a little bit of common sense in exchange.
20/08/2020: Prompt, friendly service. Food was clearly home made, and tasty. Prawn burger is an unusual choice and tasty. Very informal. Enjoyed it.
