The Checkers

Montgomery, Powys
10/04/2019: We visited The Checkers for lunch at the recommendation of a shop-keeper in nearby Bishop's Castle and the food in this very popular restaurant was excellent. We were advised immediately on arrival with an apology that there might be a delay of 20-30 minutes because they were so busy (excellent management of expectations). The delay was actually a bit less, and the food well worth the wait. Service was relaxed, prompt and courteous and beer (from Three Tuns brewery in Bishop's Castle) and wine also very good. Note that the restaurant is not open of an evening.
28/03/2019: The weather was beautiful and we were able to sit outside. The soufflé and the fish cake were excellent but why such minuscule portions? The salad was a few leaves with the odd almond sliver. The soufflé was served with half a slice of white pap. Service was OK but lacked enthusiasm. Overall could only be described as very poor value for money and yet, what a pity because with a little extra effort, slightly larger portions and a menu which better reflects the seasons it could have been quite acceptable.

Y Long Room

Tregaron, Ceredigion, >100£
13/04/2019: Took a meal in the talbot and wasn't disappointed. Friendly bar staff, great food and good wine and beer choices. Highly recommended
01/04/2019: I ordered the plaice, I expected a filet of plaice, but it came as large chunks, pako covered, it was nice but not what I expected, I’d been here a couple of years ago and it was much better, my partner had the burger which was lovely,

Spencer s Bar & Brasserie

Llandrindod South, Powys
24/03/2019: We booked an afternoon tea for two at Spencer’s bar as part of our weekend stay at hotel Metropole. The presentation was lovely and the food and coffee were delicious.
19/02/2019: We visited the bar for lunch today. Despite being very busy, the food was prepared very quickly. The reason for the review is down to the great friendly service received from Damian - nothing was too much trouble, especially for our disabled guest.

Bengal Brasserie

Llanidloes, Powys
28/09/2018: We was going to come in for a meal a few days back but it was empty so we decided we'd have a takeaway instead. We had to wait a long time for the takeaway. It was cold, bland and tasteless. It was more like a aldi 99p curry. The person who took our order was a young girl, who spent most of her time on the HER phone which we found was very rude. She didn't even apologise when the food was late.
24/09/2018: Op een regenachtige woensdagavond gaan eten. Het was rustig in de zaak. Heel vriendelijk geholpen.

Upper Rectory

Welshpool Castle, Powys, 20-30£
14/12/2018: Visited last night with my husband, and we both enjoyed a wonderful evening, which started with cocktails while seated in front of a very welcoming log burner. The whole place was very cheery in full-on Christmas mode. The fabulous seven course Christmas taster menu was just delicious from start to finish; we especially loved the smoked venison, which was delicate and meltingly tender and the four bird roast - again, each meat was tender and full-flavoured, and it’s lovely to have home-grown vegetables, locally-produced meat of high quality and delicious wine - as I said, we loved it all!
06/11/2018: Dined at the Upper Rectory last week. As usual a stunning meal in lovely surroundings. A wonderful atmosphere, booked to go again !!

Aberaeron, Ceredigion
