Clos du Marquis

Wonston and Micheldever, Winchester
24/12/2018: Just perfect French food. Lovely and gorgeous and delicious. Really atmospheric and welcoming. A great night.
20/12/2018: Had lunch today at The Clos du Marquis. We have been going to this fine restaurant for 8 years now and have never been disappointed. Food exceptional and very not over priced for fine French dining. I love the fact that your dog is more than welcome also in the true French manor.

Pulpo Negro

The Alresfords, Winchester
26/12/2018: 7 of us met here as a prechristas get together. We were welcomed warmly and seated at a large table, immediately offered water and other drinks. We also accepted the advice of our servers and tried the tomato bread (which was almost the most delicious thing I have ever eaten) and ‘pregnant’breads by way of aperitif. During this initial, feast we ordered a range of other tapas such as classic tortillas, Padron peppers, tomato and onion salad, sliced rare beef, Pulpo negro, Patatas bravas and others. The service was second to none and the food and drinks were absolutely excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Definitely going again. Alresford is a very pretty village and convenient for our widely scattered family and friends to meet up.
20/12/2018: We came for lunch with some friends and really enjoyed the excellent service, wine and food.We enjoyed all the food but we particularly enjoyed the courgette fritters , the patatas bravas and the belly pork .We will definitely go again. In fact we enjoyed all the food.

Kyoto Kitchen

St Bartholomew, Winchester, 45-60£
17/12/2018: We have heard rave reviews about Kyoto and to reach No. 1 on Trip Advisor in Winchester against lots of competition, requires consistent excellence. I am particularly reluctant to score badly unless there are demonstrable reasons. So here goes:
12/12/2018: I admit that I don't know what constitutes 'authenticity' so this review is on basis purely of how much I enjoyed the meal. We had the £34 lunch set menu which includes 5 courses, each fairly manageable but by end you feel quite full up. I really enjoyed the sashimi, which included a trio of different fish and had great wasabi, and seaweed and ginger-like garnishes. Also the very light tempura and the delicious beef tataki. Very charming and swift service. Peaceful surroundings and will be sure to return.

The Shoe Inn

Upper Meon Valley, Winchester
04/01/2019: Visited for lunch( worth booking to guarantee a table) and not disappointed.
01/01/2019: We came here for lunch on Sunday with an old friend. We enjoyed a reasonably priced delicious lunch! I had roast beef with all the trimmings! A real delight! Cooked to perfection! Plenty of vegetables to enjoy!

Forte Kitchen

St Bartholomew, Winchester, <20£
14/12/2018: Enjoyed a beautiful breakfast earlier this week which was well cooked . Gluten free catered for. The coffee was particularly good
14/12/2018: Went for a birthday breakfast with friends. Think they forgot about us as we waited an hour for our food. Serving staff were pleasant but the person in charge was very off hand and there was very little in the way of apology. The wait meant we had little time to enjoy the rest of our planned morning which was a shame. The food when we actually got it was fine but don't think we will go back in a hurry

The Barleycorn Inn

Bishops Waltham, Winchester
16/11/2018: We had 2 delicious evening meals here while we were staying in a local hotel nearby for a short break. The food was great, the service was excellent, even though the pub was very busy, and there was a warm, friendly atmosphere. We got chatting to some locals who said they eat there regularly which speaks volumes for the quality of the food and service. We wish we had a pub like the Barleycorn near us in Maidstone! Thoroughly recommended!
16/11/2018: Great food and plenty of it. Can’t fault the service. Prices reasonable. Will be going there again! Comprehensive menu. Great welcome and lovely ambience.

The Bugle Inn

Colden Common and Twyford, Winchester
14/12/2018: We had pre-booked our table for 6 and arrived by Taxi from Winchester. We were not rushed into sitting down and had a few drinks before and although the ladies had spirits we, (the blokes) had real ale (Flowerpots). We, (the blokes) had starters of wild mushroom soup, baked baby camembert and hot smoked salmon. We were all very satisfied with these dishes, which were each very tasty.
14/12/2018: So apparently the prawn, crab and avocado was amazing, I wasn’t allowed anywhere near it. the ham hock, I can attest to was great. For the main the chateaubriand was simply amazing, beef cooked to perfection, green beans, mushrooms, chunky chips, Tomato’s, watercress, horseradish and sauces defeated us with gastronomic perfection. We couldn’t eat it all and were offered a take away... Somehow after a break we managed a cheese board to share, the two hoots blue was so good we had to google where we could buy our own. Staff were pretty good too, always attentive and knowledgable. Highly recommended if you are close by.

Gurkha's Inn

St Bartholomew, Winchester
17/12/2018: Went last Friday evening with my wife on a trip to Winchester. The place was busy, but then again it is Christmas. The service was still really good and the food was top notch. I had the Gurkha's Revenge. The name was very apt I have to say! Can't wait to return.
12/12/2018: Food is very good, prices are accessible and the lunch menu is available on weekends again. Best Indian in Winchester hands down.

Piccola Roma

Bishops Waltham, Winchester
29/12/2018: It is our favourite place to start Christmas. My son and his girlfriend always insist on coming here to his 'favourite table' (secret!) when he visits from London (where he eats out A LOT! Great authentic pizzas and salads. Excellent, not overbearing service too.
14/12/2018: Visited midweek, a lovely restaurant, quite busy downstairs, so we were pleased to be seated upstairs where it was quieter. Service was great, food was lovely, out of 4 of us everyone enjoyed all of their chosen courses.

Tichborne Arms

Cheriton and Bishops Sutton, Winchester, >100£
01/01/2019: Ignore the reviews criticising the pies! We did and enjoyed really excellent game and chicken and ham pies, generously filled with tasty, rich sauces and a delicious top crust. Excellent chips and vegetables. So often you go to pubs where the pies are obviously bought in and have plenty of pastry but very little and obviously processed filling. We had a lovely family lunch for four on Saturday in this family run, cosy, unpretentious, very hospitable pub. The hamburger is also recommended and lovely choice of puddings - although we were too full to indulge. Good selection of local real ales and cider. The loos are spotless too! Thank you for a very pleasant lunch and we will return!
01/01/2019: Visited The Tichborne Arms today following a lovely walk along the Watercress Trail with our dogs.

St John and All Saints, Winchester
17/12/2018: The menu is quite limited and for vegetarians it’s a burger or a burger - Or a slice of fried halloumi in a bun with a basket (?) if chips and a small pot if coleslaw for £11.95. Unimpressed. The chicken curry special was a decent portion but not as good as Mum makes. Service for desserts was disorganised and we left after half an hour of faffing about and then told they had run out of our choice.
15/12/2018: Received a very warm welcome and some complimentary mince pies and after eights.

Cafe Meon

Wickham, Winchester, <20£
28/12/2018: After much persuasion from my wife, who ate here many months ago and has been raving about it ever since, we had lunch here today with our son and his partner. None of us are vegetarian or vegan and being a lifelong committed carnivore I was not expecting much. I have to say I was blown away by the choice on the menu and the quality of the food. It certainly opened my eyes. Service let us down a little which is why I haven’t given top marks. I would though still recommend it to anyone and especially the established meat eaters.
24/12/2018: Visited this little vegan restaurant which is set in a converted water mill with lovely views. It is nothing posh, wooden tables and chairs but the delicious food well compensates for this. All food is freshly prepared. The service was good and the bill was £83 for five of us which included drinks but only one desert.

Cote Brasserie - Winchester

St Michael, Winchester, 20-30£
15/12/2018: We didn’t book, and seem to get the last table, which was in the window. Any other people taking a chance on not booking seemed to be turned away. What can I say, great food the deal for the formule is brilliant value with a hot and cold drink. Great experience and we have now going back again. But this time we have booked.
13/12/2018: Excellent choice on the menu and great food when choices made. Very good selection of wines to go with the food and there was a very friendly and comfortable atmosphere. The staff were brilliant - very friendly, courteous and efficient. Will happily visit again.

Chesil Rectory

St John and All Saints, Winchester
17/12/2018: Great meal for 8 of us - had to pre-order food but food was of high quality and nicely served. My only quibbles were:
16/12/2018: My husband and I we lucky enough to get a booking. We were enchanted by the pure quaintness of this beautiful restaurant. The food was delicious and staff were excellent. If you like quirky, cosyness luxury this lovely restaurant is for you. We really enjoyed it.

Samuel's Rest

Shedfield, Winchester, <20£
25/11/2018: Honestly what a little gem this pub is. Real home cooked hearty food. Their salads could feed 4 people. All the food was awesome and really fairly priced. Staff were also extremely attentive and happy to make tweaks to meals.
23/11/2018: Lamb shank with mash and vegetables. Lovely taste to the meal, worth the price tag but slightly bigger shank would have been nice. The whole meal as normal very tasty and full of favour. The vegetables cooked well and mash was creamy. Having extra mint sauce was nice on the vegetables.
