Clos du Marquis

Wonston and Micheldever, Winchester
21/10/2018: We have been three times to the Clos du Marquis and it never disappoints. It’s that place you go for a truly special evening. Unhurried, unfussy but quintessentially English.
08/10/2018: With a lot of excellent reviews we were very much looking forward to our visit and had high expectations. On our arrival we found live music with a 3 piece ensemble playing 1940's style music which we thought was rather intrusive but maybe other diners liked it but it was not a great start to our evening. The main problem was the food which was simply not up to our expectations, the french onion soup was adequate but not great and my partners scallops in a lemongrass and ginger sauce was spoilt by the sauce being too salty although the 4 scallops were nicely cooked but at £13.50 we expected better. The poorest dish was the 'pork fillet medallions with cider and caramelised apple' - in reality 2 pieces of mediocre pork partly filled with spinach and served with a sauce/gravy which apparently included the cider and caramelised apple but not at all what we had envisaged. The main dishes were accompanied by a selection of vegetables - cauliflower that had some green pesto and was roasted but it neither looked nor tasted great, creamed spinach as if there wasn't enough stuffed in the pork and hasselback style potatoes that were mediocre. The service was adequate the bread rolls were good and the wine was excellent but overall the evening was let down by the food which was so disappointing our only conclusion being that it must have been the chefs night off with a poorly qualified stand-in.

Pulpo Negro

The Alresfords, Winchester
08/11/2018: It's been a little while since our last visit. Everything was excellent. We had about 8 dishes with the stand outs for us the courgette fritti and the cured anchovies. Great little wine list where you can drink fine wine with a reasonable mark up which is very rare occurrence in this country. It won't be as long until our next visit.
06/11/2018: We had lunch there with some very good friend who were a bit more familiar with Tapas and therefore we left the choice to them. We started off with mantilla olives and Catalan tomato bread followed by the classic tortilla, jabon iberico, pork belly & sweet corn, gambas al ajillo, and then finished of with chocolate mousse and vanilla ice cream. Absolutely delicious.

Forte Kitchen

St Bartholomew, Winchester, <20£
03/11/2018: This is a great place for breakfast. The coffee is very good and the breakfast is delicious The staff are friendly . Great place
30/10/2018: You need to look out for Forte Kitchen because it's easy to miss. In Parchment Street up a flight of stairs we almost walked by and that would have been such a shame because it turned out to be a great place for a good lunch. We were welcomed and given a table very quickly and the rest of the service was just as good. The menu was simple but all you could want - we had the Cod Loin which was superb and reasonably priced.

Kyoto Kitchen

St Bartholomew, Winchester, 45-60£
12/11/2018: Went for this restaurant even though it was over 2 hours away from us so booked it and made a weekend of Winchester! Well worth the effort.
12/11/2018: If you want something a little different and don't want to eat one massive plate of food but would rather have several plates of really tasty food then this is the place for you. The food was amazing and the service 5 star.

The Robin Hood

Owslebury and Curdridge, Winchester
25/10/2018: Great place , grwat atmosphere, attentive staff ( even though it was busy), home cooked food ~ ( ribs to die for) the rest of the food is pretty amazing too .
03/10/2018: Booked a week in advance. Table for 4.

The Shoe Inn

Upper Meon Valley, Winchester
06/11/2018: We had a lovely evening here with friends. Everyone enjoyed their food and we had a great time with the gin menu. The only let down was the rude, patronising waitress who messed up the order for one of the mains and blamed us.
04/11/2018: The family had been many times and finally took us on a recent visit and what have we been missing! Even the glasses were chilled for the Exton fizz we ordered. Menu wasn’t extensive but plenty of choice and was all delivered perfectly. Portion control is hearty so maybe skip lunch! Staff we very accommodating, young and cheerful and very dog (well behaved ones) friendly!

Tichborne Arms

Cheriton and Bishops Sutton, Winchester, >100£
27/10/2018: On our way back home to Germany we had a really great overnight stay with our campervan at the pub. The food was excellent, the hospitality absolutely terrific. A place to recommend 100%!! We will come back!
25/10/2018: A return visit to The Tichborne Arms this October was just as special, unrushed and enjoyable. We were looked after admirably by Tasha (short for Natasha who is 100% English and not from Russia as my friend enquired!). Thank you Tasha for looking after us so well.

The Bugle Inn

Colden Common and Twyford, Winchester
12/11/2018: Lovely village pub full of locals giving this establishment a laid back atmosphere as a place to eat. So many pubs now are just eating places and you feel out of place just having a drink but not here the two marry well.
12/11/2018: A nice gastro pub off the M3 near Winchester.Nice atmosphere, very friendly staff and good service .They serve a Sunday roast of lamb, roast pork, beeef and chicken. The vegetables are fresh and well presented and not over cooked. The wine list is reasonable and not over priced .If you go by car go early as the parking is limited, about 12 places . It is a nice stop off if you are traveling to London or South to the coast.

Samuel's Rest

Shedfield, Winchester, <20£

Gurkha's Inn

St Bartholomew, Winchester
07/11/2018: We went here for a company Christmas meal. Everything was fabulous. Service was good and the food was delicious. It is a small place and it did get crowded, so I would recommend making reservations.

Cafe Meon

Wickham, Winchester, <20£
08/11/2018: Being going for coffee and cake however, we managed to get in for lunch and WOW is all I can say. Really tasty food which I could eat over and over again. Outstanding flavours and I can't wait to try some of the other dishes. Great place and a shame it is not open in the evening.
06/11/2018: Great vegan restaurant within a an interesting shop food really tasty with a good variety menu. There is also another Offbeat restaurant at Sunnyfields Jacob Gutters Lane Totton which is licensed with a good farm shop on site

St John and All Saints, Winchester
31/10/2018: I booked the pub for a Sunday lunch to celebrate my daughter's birthday: there were 6 of us in my party. I had no previous knowledge of the pub so relied on the reviews … I was not disappointed. The pub was busy - and buzzing - when we arrived but we were greeted with a smile and there was no delay in getting our pre-lunch drinks which we had in the small, but pretty garden.
23/10/2018: I have to say a huge thank you to Brid, Derek and staff for looking after us on my Dad's memorial gathering. The food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. We love the pub and will be back for a meal there hopefully very soon. Thank you for helping me get through a very emotional time. I think my Dad would have approved as he used to play bar billiards there a long time ago.

The Black Rat

St Michael, Winchester, >100£
05/11/2018: Six of us went for lunch for a friends birthday, the food was from a set menu, but there was plenty of choice, the food was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful with questions we had.

Piccola Roma

Bishops Waltham, Winchester
20/10/2018: Excellent food and service at all times. Freshly prepared authentic Italian dishes, including pizza like no other. Decor and the intimacy of the restaurant creates a very Italian atmosphere, I always feel like I’m on holiday, and friends agree. My latest visit was a celebration party for my birthday in early September. Friends are still talking about it, the wonderful food, atmosphere and service. Our evening was enhanced by Jason, the magician, who entertained and amazed us. Everyone says it was a special evening, and it certainly was a special birthday for me and I have lovely memories to keep. Day or evening Piccola Roma never disappoints
14/10/2018: Really fantastic staff, and the food was perfect - really homely with the emphasis on great flavours. I stopped by at the recommendation of my Airbnb host - here is me doing the good deed of passing it on to you all. Go book a table, you won't regret it.
