Restaurant 56

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse, 60-100£
15/12/2018: We arrived at Sudbury House reception and were shown through to the restaurant drawing room for canopies and our coats were taken whilst we choose from the menu. We had rung ahead regarding our dietary requirements (gluten/nuts) and the chef was very accommodating by changing a few dishes to meet our needs. We were asked if we were there for an occasion? I said it was for my birthday.
03/12/2018: Staying in Whitney we did what we usually do and just pick the type of restaurant we think will give us what we are looking for without reference to online feedback.

The Greyhound Inn

Greendown, Vale of White Horse
14/12/2018: A beautifully decorated pub with rooms that serves delightful food in a lovely village. What’s not to like.
02/12/2018: Visited with our family including two children and a baby. We were allocated a table near the main bar and a warming fire. The Sunday lunch menu offers a choice of roasts including a nut roast. They provided small portions of the roasts for the children and also offered a children’s menu. The food was delicious- served with a selection of vegetables and Yorkshire’s. Service was friendly, efficient and unobtrusive and they were happy to serve a birthday cake we had brought at the end of the meal. Great experience and we will definitely return.

Java & Co

Abingdon Abbey and Barton, Vale of White Horse, <20£
18/12/2018: This is one of the best coffee shops in the area. The cafe itself is simply furnished but comfortable and welcoming. The owner and staff are really friendly and helpful, the coffee is excellent and there is a good range of cakes sandwiches and snacks on offer. It’s also dog friendly and in a great central location but peaceful and relaxing. Highly recommended.
16/12/2018: I spend a fair amount of time and money here... the staff are always friendly, the coffee is tasty, the almond croissants are delicious. The space inside can get busy because it's the best but there's always high chairs for the little ones, blankets for outside and plenty of tables in the square.

The Packhorse - Eating Inn

Hendreds, Vale of White Horse, 20-30£
02/01/2019: First time at this wonderfully located pub/restaurant and what a treat. We all thoroughly enjoyed our 3 courses and would definitely return very soon. Staff were very attentive both with drinks and food. The food was served very well and cooked to perfection. Sticky toffee pudding a fabulous treat.
29/12/2018: food delicious, service slow and poor. Had to remind them to being drinks, grumpy waiters and one waitress, apart from one young lady Who was very sweet. I disagree with a service charge being added to the bill when service was poor. Will not be rushing back.

The Woodman Inn

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse
16/12/2018: Was disappointed when our £28 steak was just literally just steak & chips not even a grilled tomato on the side .not worth the money . Some of our friends had the roast but had to ask for the vegetables to go with it , a little tray of vegetables arrived to stretch between the 3 of them just selerac & carrots ? . They were disappointed & and not worth the money . Puddings were on the small side . No staff at anytime ask how our food was . Overall very disappointed and overpriced. We will not be going back there .
04/12/2018: We had an amazing dinner and we were running late but the owner/landlord and chef could not have been nicer.

Star Inn Restaurant

Craven, Vale of White Horse
28/12/2018: I booked 2 rooms here and when checking my guests in learned that one had been cancelled - yep you read that correctly, just the one. I wanted to cancel both rooms and go elsewhere and they got nasty.
20/12/2018: We organised my Mums 80th Birthday lunch at the Star Inn on the 15th December 2018.

Bella Napoli

Abingdon Fitzharris, Vale of White Horse
01/01/2019: Good well cooked Italian food. Very nice authentic pizzas, fast friendly service, and delicious well priced Italian wine. Tucked away in the centre of Abingdon, well-worth searching out. Close to bus stop to Oxford.
02/12/2018: I have been here several times over the last month after my first great experience. My favourite place to eat in Abingdon. Hidden away and very yummy food. Staff could look like they are a bit happier in there.

The Brewery Tap PH

Abingdon Ock Meadow, Vale of White Horse
01/01/2019: I visited here with friends for lunch during Christmas week. We had a very good lunch. Service was slow but worth waiting for to get truly freshly made food. Keenly priced too.
28/12/2018: I've eaten at the Tap well over a dozen times, and called in for a drink a good deal more often than that, both with my wife and with a group of crusty old geezers on our regular Thursday night outing. The food is invariably excellent and not expensive, and the range of drinks, particularly the beers, is very impressive. Whatever the ingredients are for creating a warm and welcoming pub atmosphere, the Tap has the lot: friendly & efficient staff, a comfortable layout, good lighting & decor, a log fire in the winter, and a good-humoured clientele. I can't fault it.

Bay tree Pub

Grove, Vale of White Horse, >100£
02/01/2019: The Bay Tree pub in Grove, is a lovely authentic village pub run by Tracy and Stewart.
31/12/2018: Was staying locally and wanted some hearty food. Managed to find this pub through Trip Advisor and was only a few miles away. Found it easily and managed to get a table, although not a massive pub. Staff and service was friendly, prices were good and the food was very nice. I had the beef and ale pie which was a lot bigger than I expected and tasted very good.

Buscot Tea Rooms

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse
11/11/2018: Definitely the place to go for a coffee in the morning.. and then return for tea and scones in the afternoon! After a decent walk as much cream and jam as you can fit on the scone is allowed! Friendly staff and great coffee and tea
28/10/2018: Cosy little tea rooms, the tasty drinks and home cooking. I can recommend the scones for a cream tea, we also had vanilla latte and hot chocolate with all the extras. Really lovely friendly staff here and they made the visit all the more better for us. Would definitely go back if in the area.

The Chequers Inn Restaurant

Longworth, Vale of White Horse
30/12/2018: Wow where do I start to tell you about how pleased we was with our food at this delightful quaint English county pub. We had Christmas Dinner here and we was blown away by the food and staff , that went above and beyond to make us welcome !! We had amazing food and the land lady was fantastic with our children even went to the effort of buying a present for them to open with our Christmas Day meal along with treats to keep them busy.
12/12/2018: What a great little find this pub is, great beer and food, I had the sirloin steak (Rare) and it was cooked to perfection. I then washed it down with a few pints Brakespear bitter. A great early evening dinner.

Rose and Crown

Craven, Vale of White Horse
07/11/2018: ABSOLUTELY THE BEST - 7 cousins travelled from Australia to celebrate a special event in Wiltshire, and we all booked to stay in the Rose and Crown for 5 nights - I had eaten there once a few years back. Each day we ate a great breakfast there, and had super dinners the pub each night, on our last night there were 17 of us for dinner. This was a fantastic choice to spend all out time at this Pub, in fact one cousin extended her stay by 3 extra nights. I had been dealing with Sheena for this stay, nothing was a problem, same with Neil and the other 2 partners. EVERYTHING worked, the staff are friendly and great, the food was a credit to them, we all loved it, rooms were comfortable and clean. Thanks Sheena and crew - you made our trip extra special. We will be back.
27/10/2018: A well presented warm and welcoming country pub, food was outstanding and a reasonably priced menu, room was clean and very spacious with an adequate en-suite. Highly recommended for a quiet stay away in the country, will defo be back soon.

The Wheatsheaf

Hendreds, Vale of White Horse, 20-30£
07/11/2018: As a family who have a connection with the area and East Hendred in particular we are compelled to visit every now and then to soak up the picture postcard views and to bring back memories or visit our long lost ancestors in the graveyard. These visits are normally planned well in advance but today was an almost on the spot decision to put on loan to the local museum a memorial plaque for one of the WW1 soldiers listed on the memorial outside it. My aunt suddenly asked me if I would drive her down to drop it in before Remembrance Sunday, so we planned a spot of lunch and found the Plough closed but were recommended to the Wheatsheaf as being good value for money.
03/05/2018: My friend and I visited the inn on a quiet Tuesday night. This made no difference to the welcome or the food. A wonderful hostess greeted us and served a fabulously kept pint of beer. Delicious Camembert and salad with complementary warm bread was swiftly followed by the most delicious home made goats cheese and apricot nut roast. The house salad was delicious and had little nuggets of fresh apple that were light and refreshing. Absolutely gorgeous. My friend had the chicken in a light cream sauce that she told me was the best she had tasted for many years. What a fab pub. What fab food and what a lovely landlady and waitress All supplemented by a sprinkling of sporting legend photos around the room. Magic. Will be back next time I go to Oxfordshire

Grocer Chef

Hendreds, Vale of White Horse
11/12/2018: Have been visiting The Grocer Chef for years. Usually for a coffee and a cake but recently taking in their lunch menu. The one constant through all the visits is the “great” - couple this to food, coffee, service, people and atmosphere - it all works.
20/11/2018: my daughter in My Daughter in Law treated me to a lovely breakfast it the Grocer Chef. There was a good choice and well presented. We will certainly return.
