Restaurant 56

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse, 60-100£
27/08/2018: Outstanding meal - but as good we’re the staff, from the moment we walked in throughout selecting drinks and our meal, warm, fun, friendly, Great evening to remember. we will be back
07/08/2018: I joined a couple of friends for dinner. They have eaten at restaurant 56 several times and always rated it highly. We weren't disappointed. We chose the 9 course tasting menu - there's a 7 course one and an a la carte one too - and were served canapes on the lawn beforehand. The wine list was good with enough variety, and very reasonably priced. All the courses were executed well, the standouts for me being the incredibly flavourful tomato salad with oregano oil and tomato consomme, beef tartare with bone marrow and the turbot with peas, broad beans and local ham. So tasty. There was a nice take on a cheese course, a couple of bitesize morsels of Tunworth and Cheddar, on biscuits with various chutneys and fruit. The ratio of cheese to the other ingredients was perfect, everything came through nicely. A nice strawberry pre dessert was followed by a three layered parfait with cherries and the best sorbet I have ever tasted. If ever I have been somewhere deserving of a star, this is it. Thanks to the excellent wait staff too, for the friendly service and conversation. Highly recommended.

The Greyhound Inn

Greendown, Vale of White Horse
17/08/2018: We stayed here on the last day of a short walking holiday on the Ridgeway. Arrived on a very very hot Monday ahead of the published opening time (we pressed on with our walk to avoid the afternoon heat) but were still welcomed in. After a refreshing shower in a high quality bathroom we enjoyed a restful afternoon. The evening meal was of excellent quality with a strong wine list, it’s not a cheap place but still good value. Breakfast was served with a smile and to order, a great start for the day. My only challenge was that the room was hot, not the fault of the pub as the the weather was exceptional but our room overlooked the garden and the having the window open meant it was noisy.
17/08/2018: At the end of a 50-mile bike ride we stopped in for a pint and a sandwich today.

Sadlers Catering

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse
27/08/2018: I have just lost my mother-in-law and decided to ask sadlers if we could hold the wake in there lovely coffee shop which they agreed to we had the whole run of the place the food was excellent with bottom less coffee and tea and 2 lovely flavoured squash's for the children and those who don't drink tea or coffee(elderberry, strawberry& raspberry) the staff were very friendly all in all a lovely send off
23/06/2018: Lovely coffee shop in the market square. Friendly staff and great coffee. Perfect selection of cakes to go with.

Grocer Chef

Hendreds, Vale of White Horse
09/07/2018: Absolutely loved this place so much so I’ve since returned with all my family for breakfast and rebooked for High Tea with my mum
11/06/2018: We visited on a Saturday morning. What a find! A beautiful small but perfectly formed eatery in a beautiful village. 2 x full English with toast and coffee for £8 each.

The Woodman Inn

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse
31/08/2018: Pleasant surroundings and friendly staff but unfortunately we found the food to be rather bland. I had the duck which although well cooked the accompanying sauce was tasteless.
26/08/2018: I went here with family and friends as a last minute booking. It has a great atmosphere with yummy food. The portion sizes generous and the staff pleasant and helpful. It also has a nice selection of locally produced beers.

Bella Napoli

Abingdon Fitzharris, Vale of White Horse
01/09/2018: Met friends for a lovely Italian meal at Bella Napoli. A full and enticing menu made it difficult to choose but three of us ordered the Bass fish dish. It was superb. Served by a lovely Polish waitress who obliged us by taking our photo with my husband’s camera. We sat and enjoyed coffee after our meal and were in no hurry to leave. We’d give this restaurant 10 out of 10 any day and would highly recommend it.
28/08/2018: Had a last minute supper at Bella Napoli a few weeks ago, and overall it was very good - it's obvioulsy been a few years since it had a "make-over" but that's all part of its charm. Very good value

The Wheatsheaf

Hendreds, Vale of White Horse, 20-30£
03/05/2018: My friend and I visited the inn on a quiet Tuesday night. This made no difference to the welcome or the food. A wonderful hostess greeted us and served a fabulously kept pint of beer. Delicious Camembert and salad with complementary warm bread was swiftly followed by the most delicious home made goats cheese and apricot nut roast. The house salad was delicious and had little nuggets of fresh apple that were light and refreshing. Absolutely gorgeous. My friend had the chicken in a light cream sauce that she told me was the best she had tasted for many years. What a fab pub. What fab food and what a lovely landlady and waitress All supplemented by a sprinkling of sporting legend photos around the room. Magic. Will be back next time I go to Oxfordshire
03/01/2018: After our monthly Didcot & District U3A Walking Groups' first walk of 2018, we made an unscheduled stop for lunch at the Wheatsheaf Public House, East Hendred, which entailed 18 walkers requesting lunch! The landlord was pleased to us all but did say the numbers could delay service; this was totally unfounded, all 18 lunches were served at the same time, which was barely 20 minutes from order!!

Star Inn Restaurant

Craven, Vale of White Horse
12/08/2018: Came here for Sunday lunch. The pork belly and accoutrements were to die for. We’ll be back! Emily C
07/08/2018: Chose the pub on reputation to lunch with friends. Nice airy bar cum dining room. Menu was fixed price 2 or 3 course at a reasonable price. We had local ham, egg and chips, beefburger and a caesar salad with chicken. A bottle of 'reasonably' inexpensive chenin blanc was our choice. Followed it up with chocolate souffle and some cheese. Service was friendly and efficient. Would we return....yes, but it's a long way from Australia!

Bay tree Pub

Grove, Vale of White Horse, >100£
04/09/2018: lovely pub always good customer service food is always good. Its a great place yo have family get togethers.
04/09/2018: Food is yummy! And comes out quickly. Drinks are always fizzy! Great hospitality and atmosphere. Highly recommend

Buscot Tea Rooms

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse
17/08/2018: We enjoyed a beautiful stop at this charming little cafe. The staff were really friendly and the food was delicious. A must if you’re in the area.
04/08/2018: Popped here for a mid Saturday afternoon cup of tea. Drove into Buscot village itself and it was chokka, and there was only one space in the tea room car park. However, it looks like most people that park here go to the nearby lock and weir.

The Packhorse - Eating Inn

Hendreds, Vale of White Horse, 20-30£
29/08/2018: I visited last week with my toddler and myself for a early evening treat.
26/08/2018: I explained that the profiteroles were icy on the inside ... the explanation provided included heavy patronisation implying I am unaware of how food should be served. Having eaten at infinitely more imptessive establishments from Hong Kong to New York, irksome is an understatement. As i live round the corner and have being going there for 4 years, they will no doubt be pleased to know. I will never enter their doors again.

The Eagle Tavern at Little Coxwell

Faringdon and The Coxwells, Vale of White Horse
19/08/2018: The family gathered in this lovely pub, around a roomy table, for great evening meal and convivial service. Excellent, menu with local produce strongly represented. We sampled the mackerel starter (not that local ! but sharp, with lovely beetroot accompaniment) and then the beef, lamb and chicken - all served beautifully, with three excellent potatoes variants. The seared mini cabbage needed slightly longer cooking. The detail they take with food presentation is impressive. The desserts sumptuous - my bread and butter pudding meringue was excellent, a new twist but old flavours still there. Beautiful berry special also. All with an excellent wine from the extensive menu, and a few pints of Gold. 6 diners, £165 - happily pay this for quality, and that is what you get here - thanks to the team at The Eagle.
18/08/2018: We visited on a Saturday lunch time and opted for the 3 course menu. Everything was excellent - from the beautifully cooked fish and lamb main courses to the puddings. At £26 for 3 courses we felt it was very comparatively priced and good value for money. Lovely waiting staff who couldn’t have been more helpful, as we didn’t have a reservation. Very efficient service too! We will definitely be returning again.

The Plough West Hanney

Hanneys, Vale of White Horse, >100£
01/08/2018: A friendly welcome in this quiet village inn. Apart from the usual drinks the bar offered 4 fine ales of which I enjoyed a pint of the golden Village Idiot at 4.1% abv.
14/07/2018: Wasn’t expecting to find such a perfect example of the quintessential English pub, off the beaten track and tucked away in a lovely corner of the village just by the church (where better than this for a pub!). Turns out it is actually owned by the villagers and run as a cooperative, so that get all their favourite beers! There were several that would get my vote and I couldn’t resist washing down some of the ham egg and chips with a great pale ale!

Kingswell Hotel and Restaurant

Harwell, Vale of White Horse, <20£
31/08/2018: Called in for a pint on passing during quiet hours (3 to 6pm) further to having to cancel a previous booking for dinner. Gorgeous setting and ambience. Staff and Mine Host,Rob, were a delight. Attentive, friendly, relaxed. Menu looks great. Dining room, Snug and bar are beautiful. Can't wait to return and have a meal. Highly recommended. A great example of a lovely country "pub"/hotel that's moved with the times but retains the best of the "old" characteristics and charm. Recently under new management so some of the older low ratings are redundant.
28/08/2018: We visited the Kingswell as a family get together to celebrate my Aunt's birthday on a Friday evening.

The Brewery Tap PH

Abingdon Ock Meadow, Vale of White Horse
01/09/2018: We have visited the BTap on 3 previous occasions and had nothing but fabulous food and good beer/Gin range. Awesome.
27/08/2018: My husband and I made a last minute booking for Sunday dinner. It was well worth braving the pouring rain for the Yorkshire puddings alone!
