The Highwayman Inn

Rhoose, The Vale of Glamorgan, 20-30£
16/12/2018: Visited on a Friday night in December- portion sizes were amazing value for money - staff were very friendly indeed and service was prompt. Whitebait was delicious as was the gammon steak . The only down side of our visit was circumstantial and difficult for me to write as I don’t want to be critical of young talent . We arrived at 8:30 and ordered our meal and as the starter arrived so started the entertainment- the young lad was super talented but the volume prevented any conversation for the rest of the evening - even waiting staff failed to hear each other or us - move table I hear you think - we could not it was a full restaurant. So we will come here again but check for entertainment and dine before 9 and then enjoy the entertainment. Good luck to the young lad - he really was talented .
16/12/2018: My wife and I took some of the family here for Sunday lunch. Wow, what a meal! My wife had an excellent roast, and I had a very substantial burger. The chips and onion rings were very tasty too. The waitress was really helpful and the bill very reasonable. For a no nonsense Sunday lunch, or pub meal, within 15 miles of Cardiff, you will struggle to do better than this!

Restaurant James Sommerin

Plymouth, The Vale of Glamorgan
27/11/2018: Wife treated me to a Birthday surprise. Never been here before and we were not previously aware of it. Went on a cold, blustery evening in November.
27/11/2018: This was our first visit to James Sommerin, and we found the food absolutely excellent. We had the 9-course taster menu, and the flavours were exquisitely balanced throughout (with the possible exception of a souffle served with parma violet ice cream - not to everyone's taste). Favourite dishes included scallops, lamb and fig pudding. We also had the optional cheese course, which meant we were truly stuffed by the end of the evening. The one issue with the menu was a slight imbalance towards desserts (which made up 3 of the 9 courses). We also felt that there could have been a better selection of pre-dinner drinks.

The Market Place

Cowbridge, The Vale of Glamorgan, >100£
06/11/2018: Visited with friends to celebrate a birthday. There is a set menu for Sunday lunch with several choices at each course. The food was beautifully cooked and presented, and the service was attentive but unobtrusive. Thoroughly recommended.
12/09/2018: Visited here on a Saturday night with the family. Food was okay, but very ordinary, portions on the small side and overall the experience was disappointing for the money. This place isn't cheap, but really needs to up it's game if it is to justify the money being charged. There are many better options around in the area, this is a place that I suspect has grown complacent and needs to wake up.

Franco's

St. Bride's Major, The Vale of Glamorgan
16/12/2018: Visited Frolics last Friday as a group of around 20 on a Christmas party. Venue is fabulous for a small party, and the food and drink was all first class. The welcome and service we received from the proprietor was excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant
14/12/2018: I can’t say a bad thing about this place. It’s very authentic Italian food which is genuinely some of the best food I’ve ever tasted, very welcoming friendly staff and the inside (especially downstairs) is a very cosy place which just adds to the vibe of the place. Me and my partner have vowed to come back for any occasion!

08/12/2018: Just the most amazing food ever. From the Scallops and Goose Ham as starters. The Lamb and the Fillet Steak, Main courses. Just couldn’t be any more perfectly cooked. Fabulous, fabulous evening
02/12/2018: My friend surprised me with afternoon tea here for my birthday and I had an amazing time. The food was great and the service was equally as amazing. The tea and coffee is refillable and you don’t have to pay extra for more, which we found great!

Arboreal

Cowbridge, The Vale of Glamorgan
12/12/2018: I have to say, tonight was fantastic. We had 2 onglet steaks (ordered rare) and they were cooked to perfection, lamb special which was described as 'beautiful' and the chicken supreme with hot and sticky rub. Sides of rosemary and salt seasoned fries, sweet potato wedges and cauliflower cheese. All of it was perfect. Made my birthday night out we also had chicken wing starters and hamhock terrine. Flipping great!! Well done guys! We're all coming back soon. Really recommend.
12/12/2018: Having had such a good experience here on evening visits we decided to try Sunday Lunch. Soup of the day and fish cakes to start, beef for mains and then Eton Mess to finish for my wife. Everything was excellent at a reasonable price, well cooked, well presented, definitely not pub grub. My wife said it was the best Eton Mess she has had. Staff are interested and helpful which sadly is not always the case these days. Food preparation is all on show which is both entertaining and honest.

The Hare & Hounds

Cowbridge, The Vale of Glamorgan
12/12/2018: Well where shall I start, lovely atmosphere when we visited for Sunday lunch. Staff were very attentive, nothing too much trouble. Able to advise on food and wine selection. The meal was divine, can't wait to revisit!
10/12/2018: Delightful range of small tasters and artesan breads included complimentary. Food well cooked and a reasonable price given the quality. Very enjoyable, simple no-nonsense atmosphere, not trying to be up-market and posh. Felt like it was someone's successful hobby they were sharing with us.

Bar 44

St. Augustine's, The Vale of Glamorgan
17/12/2018: It was the night before Christmas... well, not quite, but it was very busy in Bar 44 on Saturday night. However, this did nothing to diminish our enjoyment.
15/12/2018: Another excellent night at Bar 44. It’s a shame we don’t live nearer as we would visit more often. The food and wine were excellent and the service exemplary. I didn’t get the guys name but he is from Croatia. His service is a master class.

The Windsor Restaurant & Tea Rooms Penarth

St. Augustine's, The Vale of Glamorgan
28/10/2018: Love this homely feeling cafe...after visiting in the summer it is now our regular place to go to in Penarth, getting through the vast menu bit by bit, and everything we have chosen is good quality, piping hot. and served with a smile. The coffee/tea is good quality too.
22/10/2018: I eat here regularly. The Windsor caters for customers wanting tea and cake right through to a full 3 course meal with wine. I usually have the roast - a choice of two meats, with roast and boiled spuds, cabbage, peas and carrots with lashings of gravy - always piping hot. Sometimes I go for their excellent salads - the plate is overflowing with healthy stuff. The fish and chips is excellent, as is the Glamorgan ham with parsley sauce - plus the curry with half and half. Always a plateful of deliciousness, whether you go for a sandwich, soup or the full works. Reasonably priced and served quickly by mostly pleasant staff.

Star Inn

Llandow/Ewenny, The Vale of Glamorgan, 20-30£
23/11/2018: A good location just off the M4 and a pleasing Welsh welcome make this a useful lunch stop. The service was friendly but the food was unmemorable. My vegetable pie looked attractive but was rather bland - the same might be said for our desserts. We had an enjoyable family meal without anyone commenting on the food.
18/11/2018: We had a group of about 14 people eat here. We pre-booked the table and food and it make it much easier and they printed out peoples selections as well. This made it every easy to handle. The food was brilliant and the service was fast. It has a cosy pub atmosphere, traditional decor and the price was reasonable. Overall a great experience.
