Maison Bleue Restaurant

Abbeygate, St Edmundsbury
16/08/2019: Superbe experience, l'accueil est d'une très grande qualité, le service est divin et la cuisine une explosion de saveur dans la bouche. Le rapport qualité prix est excellent.
15/08/2019: It’s about time that the Maison Bleue was awarded a Michelin star. We last ate here a couple of years ago and the standard is as good as it was then. There are two Michelin starred restaurants in Norfolk (both restaurants with rooms) and Maison Bleue is at least as good, if not better, than those.

1921 Angel Hill

Abbeygate, St Edmundsbury
15/08/2019: Couldn’t fault anything. Everything was excellent. Really good value for a splendid meal. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, food was delicious and the Malbec a good choice.
14/08/2019: This is a lovely place. The décor is lovely – old oak beams and quiet colours. We started with the 8 canapés, which divided nicely between us (I had the non-fishy ones, which were all interesting). As a starter we both had the green pea velouté, which is beautifully presented and extremely good. The bowl arrives first, with an arrangement of pea shoots, a flower and the quail egg (think a scotch egg but with crushed peas instead of sausage, lightly breaded, fried, halved). I make a good green pea velouté, but at home I tend not to bother straining it – they showed me that I probably should bother, because theirs is better. My main was perfectly presented: hake, done as it should be and on a bed of creamed, finely sliced beans, with some cubed, fried, vegetable thing (bacon and egg and sweet potato? I am unsure) and some very thin slices of crisped chorizo. So far so good. But then, there were three small artichoke hearts. I love artichokes, and I grow some so that I can also have the little ones; but these were lightly pickled. OK, I like pickled vegetables, too, but – hello? Who puts pickled vegetables next to cream sauce? Had a drink of water before and after them, and they were good, but they did not integrate at all with the rest of the meal. We skipped desert and finished with coffee and petit fours. Overall, I found the presentation and service outstanding, and the food was very, very good (I would have greatly preferred a simple fresh herb treatment for the artichokes, though).

Leaping Hare

Stanton, St Edmundsbury
11/08/2019: There’s also a restaurant but it was the cafe which provided us with such a delicious lunch today. Two of us went for the Croque Madam in which each constituent was a delight. Another of us went for a Wyken classic, the eggs Benedict, whilst the fourth in our group tried the Venison Kofta with salad and pitta. We each enjoyed our food and the laid back atmosphere amongst artworks inside the well preserved Suffolk barn.
08/08/2019: We had lunch in this wonderful restaurant after a nice walk in the forest and seeing the animals. They were very friendly and they had a lovely choice of food (also for children). We had fishcakes and eggs benedick and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We will be back. Also make sure to check out the lovely shop :)

White Horse Pub

Chedburgh, St Edmundsbury, <20£
17/08/2019: This was our second time. Just fantastic, light Yorkshire pudding, chicken and beef were cooked to perfection, perfectly cooked veg and excellent service! The kids meals were large and big enough for my ravenous 10 year old. We will be back! Service was just excellent.
07/08/2019: Went for lunch hoping for more choice other than a chick pea curry or a cheese bageutte. The food was boring grated cheese which felt like being at school. Salad was fresh but with no dressing. I get the feeling that chips come to the rescue for many people when food is concerned they certainly are not what I feel compliment every meal. Average experience, however staff very pleasant.

Casa del Mar

Eastgate, St Edmundsbury, 20-30£
07/08/2019: My husband and I had a wonderful meal along with delicious cocktails and can’t recommend it highly enough. We don’t actually live in Bury but will definitely come back - we have already recommended it to family and friends. The waitress was really helpful when recommending food on the menu and the service was excellent. The food, btw, was fantastic.
07/08/2019: Stumbled across this restaurant on the off chance and thought it looked liked a nice place to dine - we were not disappointed! Delicious food – professional, friendly service! :) A week later and I'm already going back again!

Abbeygate, St Edmundsbury
12/08/2019: It’s very rare we go for a 3 course meal as a family but if you want one or to celebrate a special occasion this is the place!
14/07/2019: Stayed in Bury St Edmonds for 2 nights and came here on our 2nd night. We hadn't booked but called in around 7pm hoping to be accommodated which they were able to do.

Baileys 2 - Coffee and Tearooms

Abbeygate, St Edmundsbury
04/08/2019: Dropped by here one Saturday lunchtime on a whim as we always seem to walk past it, so one day we stopped to look at the menu and decided to get lunch from here. So glad we did, there was a little cue so it was busy but we weren't waiting for long. The young girls running the place that lunchtime were all lovely and welcoming, it was all the best experience. I asked for additional extras (a bit of tomato and red onion in my tuna and sweetcorn toastie) and they got the proportions spot on without charging me any extra. The smoothie was so refreshing, and again the service was just exceptional. Love it here! Thank you girlies
29/07/2019: Fantastic food complimented by outstanding service. A real treat in Bury and one not to be missed! Be sure to try their amazing pancakes.

The LP

Abbeygate, St Edmundsbury
16/08/2019: Visited on a Friday for lunch. Very good location and friendly service. Looking for vegan options there was so much choice. The pizza was delicious, salads are generous sizes and food very fresh.

Cote Brasserie - Bury St Edmunds

Abbeygate, St Edmundsbury
16/08/2019: Had the 3 course daytime menu. 3 course's for £13.95. starter of zucchini frittes was almost enough on its own. Sea bass main was tasty and the iced berries with warm white chocolate sauce defeated me, but was lovely. As was my partner's chocolate pot. Definitely will be back.
08/08/2019: Good service good food and lovely building. Friday night, we hadn't booked, very busy but found us a table where we were well looked after.

The Plough Inn, Rede

Cavendish, St Edmundsbury
24/06/2019: A typical rural pub with a good atmosphere. I liked the big blackboard menu, allowing you to choose before sitting down. Staff friendly and service very good. Lovely food and good portion sizes. Not much parking, however, busy for a reason! Thanks.
05/06/2019: Nice welcome. Such a good choice of meals on their menu board. Loads of fish dishes. Various vegetarian options. Something for everyone and desserts to die for.

Haverhill East, St Edmundsbury
13/04/2019: Always lovely fish and chips. Friendly staff and efficient service. Wide range to chjoice from - various fishes, chicken, pies, sausages etc.
19/03/2019: i don’t often have fish and chips but every time I do, I wonder why I don’t have it more often! This is the best by far and the fact they deliver makes it even better. Great friendly service.

Theobalds Restaurant

Ixworth, St Edmundsbury
08/06/2019: Lovely welcome, cosy atmosphere, excellent presentation and delicious food. Service is very efficient and unobtrusive. In fact, a truely memorable and pleasurable experience. Our third visit and each one has been enjoyable. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this delightful restaurant.
06/06/2019: We stumbled across this restaurant by luck driving home to London from Norfolk. What a find! It is so rare to see such attention to detail, such a charming traditional atmosphere that is a true reflection of the owners and not some bland corporate affair. The food was delicious and very well prepared. I only had a small glass of wine but the wine list looked thoughtful and reasonably priced. We would definitely return and would happily make the detour again next time we happen to be near Bury St Edmunds.
