Verulam, St Albans
15/05/2020: Our all time favourite in St Albans for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Great with or without kids. Fab but relaxed atmosphere. Liam, Grace and the team always take the best care of you. We miss you - please open for takeaway soon!
16/03/2020: Visited this lovely little place on the hill today after a v positive eye exam, for some celebratory lunch What a great find ! Fast friendly service, super food and excellent drinks

Per Tutti St Albans

Verulam, St Albans
09/05/2020: Excellent takeaway food! Order was taken in a very friendly and efficient manner, the food arrived on time and was piping hot, very good value for money. This is the second time we've used the takeaway service since lockdown and will definitely be using it again.
03/05/2020: Our meal delivered on time, piping hot and just delicious was the perfect solution to lockdown blues, will definitely be ordering again soon.

George Street Canteen

Verulam, St Albans
08/03/2020: Been here a few times, I like its unpretentious vibe, food is nice and coffee good. They're just a bit slow, and the bread for bacon sandwiches when offered as white is actually sourdough. Technically bread that is white but not white bread! I'd change it on the menu...
12/02/2020: George Street Canteen is my first choice of venue for lunch when I'm in St Albans. The food is always freshly prepared and cooked to order just how you like it. The staff are friendly and it's always spotless. If the weather is nice you can sit outside and have a view of St Albans Abbey.

The Lower Red Lion

Verulam, St Albans
04/03/2020: Only stopped in here for a drink but really enjoyed the hour or so we spent in here. Welcoming and attentive staff members also, quite a quiet warming atmosphere inside which suited us well on a rainy day. I would definitely recommend.
12/02/2020: Had another delicious curry at the Lower Red Lion. Tuesday night is curry night, but it's a well kept secret. Tapas style dishes. A great menu to choose from. We shared mackerel, venison, vegetable cakes dishes and a dal. Although it doesn't look a lot, we were more than happy when finished. Washed down with a decent rioja. Highly recommended, best to book, 01727 855669.

The Bishop's Cave

Verulam, St Albans
01/03/2020: First class experience. Limited food menu but what is served is first class. That said, its more about the atmosphere and the fabulous range of wine and beer. Get along.
22/02/2020: Extensive wine and beer list. Nice tables. Chacuterrie and cheese is fantastic, scotch eggs and the pork pies are amazing. Very clean and really pleasant staff - keen to explain and help you choose - highly recommend

Verulam, St Albans
16/03/2020: Myself and my husband have eaten here several times now and we always have a lovely meal. The menu has lots to choose from and each dish we've had so far has tasted amazing. The only issue we have now is that on our recent visit this month we thought the toilets could do with some attention. the doors going into the ladies and gents look tatty and dirty and inside, even though the facilities are clean, the cubicles, sinks etc need replacing. it's a lovely restaurant so would be nice if the toilets are also a nice place to be.
15/03/2020: Enjoyed a night out at this restaurant. Good food and the choice of music was perfect too. Would certainly recommend it!

Dylans. The Kings Arms

Verulam, St Albans, 30-45£
12/04/2020: Best place to eat in herts by a mile. Sister pub the plough is equally good, better for the summer due to beer garden. Dylan’s rarely disappoints for quality of food, drink and atmosphere. Can’t recommend it highly enough .
08/03/2020: I remember the Kings Arms when it was just a pub and it is good to see the inside hasn't really changed. The set menu gave a good choice for all courses and our party of six had no trouble choosing. the portions are big enough to enjoy the 2 courses without feeling stuffed! Nice atmosphere and good service. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is for the fact there was some clingfilm in one of the main courses. Would definitely recommend Dylans

The Waffle House

Verulam, St Albans, <20£
17/03/2020: I came to this venue soon after moving to st. Albans not only is the food unique - everything is on waffles but also the location is absolutely stunning overlooking the river Vere and on the site of an old mill. A must see if you are in the area.
10/03/2020: We have eaten here several times in the past few years and it has always been top notch food and great service Would highly recommend

Verulam, St Albans
01/03/2020: Went for my birthday after reading such rave reviews and our experience was worlds apart from what we’d read. The food was overly salty and otherwise bland, tough cuts of meat and a pudding that was part frozen. The rice looked like it was from a packet, and tasted worse than it looked. One of our party has been ill all night due the poorly cooked saddle of lamb which didn’t taste at all fresh.
29/02/2020: Had been looking forward to visiting this place pretty much since it opened, believing it to be St Albans' answer to fine-dining, and a decent contender to Darcy's. Boy was I wrong. I don't think I've been disappointed by the quality of the food since trying Jamie's Italian (turns out he's clearly not) for the first (and last) time.

The Six Bells

Verulam, St Albans
04/03/2020: Super friendly and welcoming pub. We stopped here on our pub crawl and were greeted by near enough every person in there, public and staff. They had a lovely open fire in there which made a great atmosphere especially when it was raining outside. They had a big selection of drinks too which suited us well.
20/02/2020: Chose the easy option after travelling home by train

Locanda Bagutta

Verulam, St Albans
07/03/2020: Just came back from an evening in this wonderful hidden place.
22/02/2020: I had heard that this was a great place to try. And indeed the ambiance was really nice. But the table we had was by the door opposite their pizza kitchen - so staff were in and out every few minutes. So that was a good start. We ordered spaghetti with clams, pesto and cherry tomatoes, and spaghetti carbonara, and some vegetable sides - broccoli and peas. Nothing too outlandish, nothing we hadn't had before in a dozen Italian restaurants. Both very hard to get wrong. The clams dish arrived with the largest clams I'd ever seen. It looked impressive. Then I noticed that out of the 6 or 7 clams, 3 of them weren't opened. I mentioned this to the waitress as that was half of the starring feature of my £17 dish that was inedible. She took it back into the kitchen to get it seen to. Meanwhile my other half (O.H.) started his carbonara (a dish so simple you'd struggle to mess it up). Well - it had been deconstructed into a bowl of spaghetti in a creamy sauce with a couple of rashers of crispy pancetta criss-crossed on the top. Just why? The peas were lovely. The broccoli was broccoli. My O.H. ate slowly, but had almost finished his food by the time mine returned. The same dish, but with the clams out of their shells. This made me worried. The same amount of clams out of their shells. Had someone, hopefully not the chef, opened the closed ones and put them back in my pasta? Tentatively I tried one. It was the most disgusting, gritty, most rubbery, toughest, beyond inedible clam I've ever had the misfortune to taste ( I couldn't eat it, I couldn't chew it, I'm sorry to say I had to take it out my mouth and put it on the side of my dish). I tried the pasta. That too was gritty. Very very gritty. I gave some to my O.H. to make sure it wasn't me being fussy. 'It's like eating pasta coated in sand,' he said. I tried another clam optimistically hoping that maybe I'd just had a rogue one. That too went on the side of the plate. I asked my O.H. to try cutting one. He couldn't get his knife through it. I persevered with some more pasta, lining up the 7 sad excuses for clams round the edge (I took a picture just for the memory, I won't add it here as it's not pleasant) but had to admit defeat. Mouthfuls of grit are really disgusting and I was starting to feel sick.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks

Verulam, St Albans
13/04/2020: I was delighted to find I could order Sunday roast to my St Albans home (AL4) on Easter Sunday. We had the lamb for 3 people. It arrived well packaged in foil and plastic containers ready to be plated up. The lamb was superb - served pink as the menu stated and everything else was great - a feast of gravy, mint sauce, parsnips, Yorkshire’s, roast potatoes, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, sweet potato. There were no leftovers! We ordered by email once the menu was available and paid over the phone. It really made our day. It’s my husbands birthday early in May - if we’re still in lockdown we’ll definitely do this again if we can. Stay safe, take care.
10/03/2020: everyone should go here once or twice as one of the best old pubs in england.

The Abbey Restaurant

Verulam, St Albans
03/03/2020: I had been meaning to try the Abbey for ages and decided Valentines would be a nice night. When we arrived the staff were lovely and friendly and the decor is so pretty.
25/02/2020: I booked the abbey for a private dinner recently to celebrate my wedding with family and friends. I was really impressed with the quality of the food and it tasted so good that everyone went a little quiet as we all tucked in, which is always a good sign. Our guests raved about the food. Also the staff really went above and beyond to ensure that everything went smoothly. The manager was especially good, she was incredibly organised when it came to the meals for people with allergies, nothing was too much trouble and she really made sure that we had a lovely evening. The Abbey has such a nice atmosphere and along with the great food is a lovely place to celebrate.

The Foragers at The Verulam Arms

Verulam, St Albans, 30-45£
26/07/2019: The Foragers is the most amazing place ever, severing awesome locally sourced forgaged food. We highly recommend it to everyone and have been going back time & time again over the years for the culinary delights with our family and friends. You can not beat it for interesting dishes and ingredients. A very special place to go whether it be popping in for a drink (the homemade gins are out of this world and only one of the many specially made spirits you should try), a little bite to eat, the full menu experience or Sunday lunch. The whole taste bud journey is second to none, along with the great staff, talented chefs, who are as special as the food. We wish every resturant experience was as good as the one we always have at The Forgagers. Good job everyone, such an amazing experince, one we always cherish and can't wait to come back for more xxxxx
21/07/2019: We are new to St Albans and discovered The Verulam Arms where we went for Saturday evening drinks. This turned into a great evening, with the amazingly friendly staff and locals chatting with us and making us more than welcome. We returned the following day and had an absolutely amazing Sunday roast. I cannot recommend this place enough for the hospitality, great staff and top notch Sunday roast! Definitely a place to visit. Locally sourced food and homemade spirits make this place unique.

Thai Rack

Verulam, St Albans, >100£
23/04/2020: We decided last night that for my birthday it would be a good idea to try the Thai Rack take away for lunch. Although we rang to delay our meal the food was delivered by the restaurant at the right time absolutely hot and ample delicious portions. We did enjoy our first experience and will order again soon. Also very reasonable price.
18/04/2020: What a shame, thought we would treat ourselves to a Thai meal to raise spirits in our house at this difficult time. However, we were sorely disappointed, £50 got us cold starters, uncooked chicken satay and the smallest portion of duck ever (paid for half a duck). I called to complain and was told they didn't know who the owner was and the manager Sue was busy!! Definitely do not order your takeaway from here.
