18/06/2019: Food has become more consistent at zero. Tried the salmon teriyaki and tempura prawn today. Excellent all round.
21/04/2019: The best sushi and the most amazing Katsu curry. Can’t compare to anywhere else. Super fresh and delicious.

Po Che Chinese Food

Marshalswick North, St Albans
28/07/2018: Over cooked egg fried rice, gloop on mushroom chow mein, the mixed vegetable satay dish had a piece of pepper, half a can of bamboo shoots and half a can of water chestnuts. They're going on holiday for six weeks tomorrow: don't come back because I won't be.
25/07/2018: Great to be able to order online. They even phoned me to check a “special” request we made to make sure they understood what we wanted. Great service. Food was well cooked and generous portions. Would definitely recommend the salt and pepper squid.

Artisan Bakery

Wheathampstead, St Albans
22/02/2020: We stopped off here after visiting George Bernard Shaws corner. NationalTrust as there is no tea shop there.
29/07/2019: When Artisan at Marshalswick closed down I was devastated, because I'd come to rely on their delicious large seeded wholemeal. It was quite out of this world.

Wong's Fish & Chips

Ashley, St Albans
25/04/2020: We visit wongs on a weekly basis and love to try the different Chinese options. No matter what we try the food is always of a great standard and good value for money. The customer service is brilliant. Excited to get straight to wongs after lockdown !
08/03/2020: The staff are very friendly and the food is lovely . We have had Chinese food from here too. The chips, rice and curry sauce are really filling for a lunchtime meal. Not very easy to park outside but worth a walk.

The Oval Cafe

Harpenden North, St Albans
28/12/2019: Friendly atmosphere. We really enjoyed the coffee and cake, especially the chocolate and courgette cake. They serve a limited but adequate range of other drinks and food. Dogs not allowed inside, but they are outside, where there are a few tables. We walk our dog on this lovely site, annual permit available for a fee from the office.
24/10/2019: Great cafe, friendly atmosphere easy to park. Hot and cold snacks, tasty coffee, separate children's play room with tables for the parents and grandparents. Perfect place for a casual unhurried snack or lunch

Chinese Express

Clarence, St Albans
08/03/2020: Lovely Chinese food. Nice people and quick service. Love to watch the chefs cooking the food behind the counter in the open kitchen. Always a good service and the waiting area isn't always too busy because the cooking time is so fast.
10/08/2019: walked in last night to order some takeaway, food was tasty, not salty which I quite like, curry dishes are always my first choice, price is cheaper rha the one close by.

Bhaker House

St Stephen, St Albans
04/03/2018: First off, this place is closed most of the time, think its closing down, or may have closed down as been past several times now and always closed. Secondly this is like going into a tiny, tiny lounge in someone's house and the owner is not very friendly, well maybe we caught her on a bad day! It's so tiny, only holds about 6-8 people but she has a HUGE kitchen outback, which is crazy, as the restaurant only fits 6-8 people. Serves mostly Indian food, no cakes while we were there, which is what we wanted. Hasn't a clue about how to serve coffee or tea! I got my cappuccino in a teacup and my friend got her tea in a cappuccino cup! Nicely done out inside, but sadly not a place you'd want to go back to, the owner makes you feel awkward. Just a weird place as you are forced to chat to everyone there just because it's so tiny, not a place to go to if you want a quiet coffee with a friend.

The Carpenters Arms

Harpenden South, St Albans
21/12/2019: Excellent beer, but the landlord was distinctly inhospitable. Maybe the Christmas spirit hadn't got to him, the channel changing misery guts
26/10/2019: A real pub, well run with great beer and atmosphere. Will return time after time. Landlord really friendly and a Spurs fan too.

The Silver Cup

Harpenden South, St Albans
20/12/2019: Have not been there for a drink for some time. The pub itself has not changed but it is comfortable in the old style, staff are friendly and prices are reasonable. Will return for that pre dinner glass of wine. Enjoyed my short visit.
01/12/2019: The landlord here is excellent in his approach to providing a hospitable and welcoming place to stay, and at short notice.

Flame Light

St Stephen, St Albans
15/04/2020: I live in the southern part of St Albans where I have a large choice of Chinese take-aways. I've tried most of them, if not all. This is by far the best Chinese in the area. There's only one exception to the great food they offer, and that's the chicken & chips, typical English food. Somehow they just don't get the chicken right & to make it worse, they put the chips into the same tray as the chicken that has the gravy in & therefore you get very damp & soggy chips. Besides that, the chicken It's far too dry, just like it's been reheated many times. Apart from that, the rest of the items on the menu are just the best out of all the other offerings from other Chinese take aways.
06/11/2019: We found this gem after trying most Chinese Takeaways in the area. Food is always freshly cooked and the service is very quick.

Lantern House

Ashley, St Albans
08/03/2020: This a an okay Chinese takeaway. Its located in Hatfield Road so it's a bit hard to get parked. The shop has been there for many years .
17/09/2019: Ordered takeaway , crispy shredded beef , not so crispy , soup a bowl of salty washing up water , special fried rice , not so special , I actually threw it away and ordered another one from somewhere else

Farriers Arms

Verulam, St Albans
04/03/2020: Lovely little locals pub which suited us very well for the pub crawl we were doing. Had a nice atmosphere where it seemed everyone knew everyone, they also had a nice little selection of beers. The only downside was they did not accept card. Would still recommend.
29/04/2019: I used to visit this pub often in the 70s when it was the unofficial HQ of CAMRA (they were based in St Albans). It was then a flag-waving defender of real ale. We popped in the other Sunday and, thank goodness, it's still a no-nonsense, locals' pub with good beer. It has so far escaped the dreaded make-over from the teenage 'pub designer' who goes round the country wrecking pubs. We will be back.

T.K's Cafe

Harpenden West, St Albans
29/06/2019: I often pop in on my way to work (usually when in need of something a tad unhealthy and a strong coffee). I’m always welcomed with a smile and a cheery “good morning”. For a little café this place packs a punch. The menu is vast, it all looks fresh and is well presented. I often end up getting a little something extra to take out for my lunch. The bacon roll I usually get it top notch and the coffee is pretty decent too! The price is reasonable.
16/03/2019: I’ve been in here for a breakfast on one or two occasions. The prices are expensive and the portions are small but it is a cosy little cafe and sitting upstairs you can sit by a window and watch the people and cars go by, or enjoy the sunshine whilst reading a newspaper.

Yummy Mummys Cakes

Harpenden West, St Albans
02/03/2020: I called to try and book Afternoon Tea for 4 adults and 3 babies, given the name of the cake shop. I was really disappointed to be told that we couldn't bring in more than 1 or 2 prams due to health and safety. There would have been 2 prams and a buggy... It's unfortunately not practical to carry a baby all the way from where the car is parked and then have them sit on your lap the whole time. Might be best if you give the name of your cafe a re-think! Mum's do like to have a life too and we don't get much 'Yummy Mummy-ing' done sat indoors at home!
20/02/2020: Small cafe cake shop in Harpenden High Street Booked afternoon tea, everything was really delicious every sandwich tasty and great bread, cakes light and delicate Ate far too much ❤️
