Vita Bella

Bicknacre and East and West Hanningfield, Chelmsford, 45-60£
01/05/2019: Hands down one of the best dining experiences we have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. This restaurant takes customer focus and makes it an art form. Whilst not talking shameless luxury, the detail, attention and concern given to the customer makes this restaurant an example for many others to follow. If you want to leave with not just your stomach feeling satisfied, I would give it a try. Small touches that make people feel great for one night of their life is something rare and special. A huge thank you to all the staff that made our anniversary very special.
30/04/2019: From the moment we parked up we were made to feel so welcome. We had our12 and 14yr old who can be difficult to please but they were blown away with the duck pate and pork belly. The portions were generous so, two of us could not manage desert! The staff were so courteous and made every effort to make our visit memorable. Great value for top class food you will not be disappointed!

Windmill Motor Inn Restaurant

Broomfield and The Walthams, Chelmsford, <20£
05/05/2019: I had heard great things about the restaurant and waited a few weeks to secure a booking (saturday nights prove popular!)
05/05/2019: Our 3rd visit here with friends. Such a lovely relaxing environment, very friendly attentive ladies. The chef always adapts the menu to suit my dietary requirements. We were disappointed not to see the pea soup or the steak on the menu. I know it’s good to change the menu, otherwise you could get bored with the same food but there was no steak at all on it.

The Cuckoo

Chelmsford Rural West, Chelmsford
05/05/2019: We had a fabulous first class meal for 5 people with 4 bottles of quality wine, a bottle of house pink champagne and two gin and tonics. The food is brilliant, a good choice of meat and fish dishes, the Thai prawn red curry was very tasty. This is our favourite restaurant in Essex. Cost of the above meal £66 a head, very reasonable for that sort of quality, we will be visiting again very soon! All the staff are very good, efficient service and not too rushed.
05/05/2019: Celebrated my sisters birthday here, once again excellent throughout, our (2) cods were beautifully cooked, as was the lamb in pastry, for dessert the Bakewell tart is a must.

Zorba the Greek Taverna

Marconi, Chelmsford
04/05/2019: Four of us went to Zorba for dinner on a Saturday night and it was the best meal we've had in ages. My parents love Greek food and my dad in particular is very picky, but the whole meal from start to finish was great. The starters were piping hot, the kalamari was cooked perfectly and the tzatziki went very well with it. The Kleftiko was absolutely huge but so soft it fell of the bone. The portions were so generous the lovely waiter wrapped up my leftovers for us to take home. It's very hard to get Ouzo and good Metaxa in the UK but we had both here and the baklava and orange cake (though we hadn't much room left) were delicious. The whole meal came to under £120 including a bottle of wine so it's very good value for money.
03/05/2019: We all wanted to go toa Greek restaurant, but they are a bit thin on the ground round here. A google search found this place and I loved the decor, but wasn't too sure about the location of being under a railway. Anyway, we arrived and was greeted by the jovial owner and the night continued to get better. We all felt like we were abroad, with the Greek music playing in the background and that wonderful smell of greek food wafting through. Olives and humous for started, both lovely. 2 Kelftikos and a chicken souvlaki and an additional pitta bread later and we was stuffed. None of us wanted dessert, but our friendly host asked if we had nut allergy?? When we said no he said please try a small sample of our desserts and we were furnished with delicious baklava, orange cake and ice cream!! I'm not a dessert person normally but next time I might save some room for them! Our host thanked us for travelling to see him and offered us a free glass of raki! This was as near to greece as I've been this side of, err, greece! Seriously good, authentic, greek food, with very friendly service and reasonably priced too. This place really is a little hidden gem and we can't wait to go back! It's getting rare to be so well received in a restaurant and i liked being treated like it, and not just as another paying customer.

Olio Restaurant

Moulsham and Central, Chelmsford
05/05/2019: We’ve been really re recommended this place many times but never been and finally got round to it. Pleased to say that we were not disappointed. Lovely food, great service and nice atmosphere. Will be back.
01/05/2019: Really nice Italian restaurant. Authentic flavours and excellent, friendly service. When you’ve had enough of the chain restaurants, this is a great place to go. I will definitely return.

Everest Gurkha Bar & Restaurant

Marconi, Chelmsford
05/05/2019: We have eaten here 5 or 6 times. Lovely atmosphere, great service and really tasty food. Can't fault it and 100% recommend.
01/05/2019: My brother and his girlfriend are regulars here and took me this evening for the first time. I loved everything about it. Good food - spicy & mellow, hot but not fiery. Excellent range of dishes to choose from on the menu.

The Lion Inn

Boreham and The Leighs, Chelmsford, 30-45£
04/05/2019: My cousins and I meet Annually at The Lion Inn, they kindly accommodate approx 20 guests in the conservatory . Once again this year we were not disappointed. Our main waitress was Vicky who was on the ball, efficient and attentive to a large party. The food was good quality, plentiful and nicely presented. Buzzing and busy atmosphere. If you are a smaller party /couple you do have to go to bar area to order but don’t let that put you off as the restaurant is lovely.
04/05/2019: The food is really good but some of the staff are a bit surly. I saw quite a few people having to go up to bar to pay their bills and order desserts and as we were seated right near to what we felt were the staff quarters we had to see all the dirty plates and glasses on the side which wasnt the nicest to be honest. It’s nicer if you’re sat in the main part of the restaurant away from the staff quarters. You’re not actually served as all your dessert cutlery, glasses, etc are placed in the middle of the table for example. The bar staff are always really nice though and service is good on the bar. I go back for the food as it’s good but you are paying quite a bit for the lacklustre service.

The New London Restaurant and Lounge

Moulsham and Central, Chelmsford
05/05/2019: We always love to go to our favourite restaurant; we are never disappointed with the food, the service or the ambience. The A-la-Carte menu is changed around every 8 weeks or so to ensure fresh, seasonal and dynamic choices. As the taster evening for the current menu was 1st May (we weren't able to attend unfortunately) we decided to try it out last night. For starters, I had the shellfish ravioli, smoked haddock foam, chervil which was amazing and my husband had: roasted pigeon breast, barbecue pancetta hash which he said was lovely. To follow, we both had: fillet of beef with a steak and ale bon bon- this was to die for! This came with a small onion (which I can't comment on as I can't eat them) cooked whole with some sort of breadcrumb top; my husband said it was really tasty. We always have a side order of fat chips (this time rosemary salted) and greens which never fail to disappoint the taste budsFor our wine choice, it had to be the Argentinian Malbec- a favourite for us. As a rule, we don't usually have a sweet, but on this occasion we shared: strawberry cream cheese, shortbread, nasturtiums, elderflower ice cream....yummy! The staff who work at The New London, we consider as friends now- they are all equally professional, friendly, informative and amazing
27/04/2019: Visited The New London for the first time since just after they opened several years ago.

Zenxi

Moulsham and Central, Chelmsford, 45-60£
29/04/2019: Luke made the night extremely special... It was my gf's first night out of the hospital since a bad burn covered half of her body and after the meal she was cured!
27/04/2019: We had a really good evening and there were some nice touches, such as putting my walking stick out of the way for me and automatically directing me to the disabled toilet (the others are upstairs). Service was very good and I loved the dessert cocktails, and would recommend the Toblerone cocktail. A very good selection of wines and cocktails and the food was all well cooked and tasty. They know their menu and had no trouble directing me around my food allergy. A really good evening.

Pig and Whistle

Chelmsford Rural West, Chelmsford
03/05/2019: If more care was taken in the cooking rather than the decoration of this pub it would be wise! Uncooked squash for our starters, extremely small mains and very poor lemon meringue. The curry for my main course came with a tiny circular amount of rice and no naan. I complained about the lemon meringue as the pastry was so hard, no lemon filling and the meringue was liquid still. The waiter never returned to apologise or rectify! We would not return or recommend.
03/05/2019: I have been wanting to visit the pig and whistle for some time , i got a rare Sunday off work so did not hesitate to book a table. I was glad i did the decor is very pretty staff all friendly and attentive, the Sunday lunch was delicious . We had 3 courses and drinks and found the bill reasonable for the standard of food can not wait to visit again maybe in the evening as i can imagine its very romantic .

31/03/2019: I do enjoy going to this pub. Friendly, happy atmosphere. Good hot food, large portions, friendly and attentive service. Good selection of beers too. Love the curry. Pretty courtyard. Pub and courtyard very dog friendly. Cannot fault it
20/01/2019: We live a short walk from the pub and are always met with a warm welcome for drinks or for food - the food is fresh and the service genuinely friendly . A great example of how to run a proper local pub .

The Hare at Roxwell

Chelmsford Rural West, Chelmsford
30/04/2019: Had a lovely meal here Easter Sunday great food and excellent service from Chantel will defiantly go again
23/04/2019: Food was hearty and very good. Service also good and friendly, staff attentive and outside was a great dining experience right next to the river. Slice of cheesecake from the counter was £6.50 which I think for just a slice On a plate no garnish or ice cream was a bit overpriced. None the less a pleasant experience!

The Hoop Free House

South Hanningfield, Stock and Margaretting, Chelmsford
05/05/2019: I took my mum and nan here early March as an early mother's Day treat. We went on a Saturday and all of us enjoyed the food. The pie of the day was delicious and my sister said the fish and chips was the best she's ever had.
30/04/2019: Popped in for a quick lunch today. Had the “Pie of the Day” Absolutely fantastic, Beef with Mushroom and Ale in short crust pastry. Good selection of veg and great skinny fries. The beef in the pie was really tender, they also give you a little jug of gravy which was a lovely addition rather than asking. Short crust pasty was perfect not too thick and nice and crispy. Washed down with a crisp glass of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Difficult to beat and love all the new chairs they have put in. As always the service is really friendly and efficient.

The Fox and Goose

Chelmsford Rural West, Chelmsford, 20-30£
03/05/2019: Woman taking our booking on the phone was very rude. Told my husband "I went to school" when he offered to spell our surname for her. Waiter put our drinks on the table, spilled the beer and made no offer to wipe it up. We both had fish and chips. The fish was tasteless. The 3 times cooked chips were the size of half a potato and were also tasteless and there were far too many of them.
28/04/2019: This was a last minute booking for 20 people. We were situated in the BakeHouse which was a like having a large private room.
