Awful. A very bad tempered and cantankerous host spouting uninvited right wing nonsense. Made for an unpleasant atmosphere. The boards outside with their ridiculous conspiracy theories should have been warning enough. Avoid like the plague.

As I was meeting 2 long standing and very special friends, I wanted to meet them somewhere a bit special and they recommended the Trowel and Hammer. It did not disappoint. The quality of the food was absolutely superb, a proper sunday roast, with great portions and very well priced. The draught lager was spot on- something so often overlooked in pubs and restaurants these days. The service, like the food, was superb and the whole place- bar, restaurant, toilets- were absolutely spotlessly clean. There are of course many pubs and restaurants that can all boast great food and great service etc, but this place has a couple of tricks up its sleeve: firstly, literally at the end of the spacious beer garden you have a 'town green' and right the other side of that is the beach. Lunch and then a walk down by the sea? You can not beat that. But there was something more about this place; I have travelled much of this rock that we call 'planet Earth' and experienced all sorts of people, but rarely have I found such a welcoming and friendly group of people as those I encountered here. As a side note, there is some exceptional art work on display inside, all from a local artist. Most impressed.

Ordered the roitissery chicken it was dry burnt and cold. Was very disappointed with the food. The staff were polite. Wouldn’t go there for dinner again. We only went there because we couldn’t not get a booking at the wonderful bulls head restaurant in Turnford

Booked a table for Sunday lunch and the table we were allocated was tucked in a dark corner with poor lighting and felt like we were in a small cupboard . We did ask if we could move on to one of the many empty table but were refused as they were reserved I didn’t realise it was an option to reserved a specific table? A constant chair knock from the passing servers forced me to push our table further in to the cupboard. The disappointment didn’t stop their pate starter was served with thin hard crisp bread. The roast beef was wafer thin and served with courgette? Not a suitable vegetable for a Sunday roast in my opinion. However I did order a cauliflower cheese but more disappointed, it was tangy. I decided against eating it. The servers didn’t compensate with hospitality they were huffy and puffy and everything seemed to much trouble which in result made us feel invaluable and unwelcome. Didn’t bother with a pudding as honestly just didn’t want to spend any more money with this establishment.

My relative stayed in Room 37 for 2 nights on 23/8/2024. The room is not properly prepared. There was no shower gel, no shampoo. The shower cubicle's drain was totally blocked. It's impossible to have a shower. They have to go the nearby relative's room to have a shower! They told me till they checked out! Please make sure the room is well prepared and ready for the guest for future. Thank you.

Been here a few times and it is a very nice setting - though a bit hit and miss in terms of how busy it is, so perhaps have a backup plan in mind if you are unlucky and it is one of their busy times. A good selection of fresh cakes and hot food. Coffee is generous in quantity but I would echo some of the other reviewers in suggesting it could be stronger - however I accept this is a matter of personal taste so perhaps more a comment about me than this venue :) Staff are very diligent, efficient, pleasant and polite. As a footnote: I don't know whether the cafe is responsible for the toilets - apologies to them if they are not - but the facilites have been woeful on our last two visits. Their condition is the fault of those using them but whoever is responsible for them needs to evaluate their use and adjust their cleaning schedules to accomodate!!!!!!! My review score is for the cafe (minus the toilets).

A quaint olde inn full of character. We stayed here for one night whilst visiting our daughter nearby. The double room was clean with a comfortable bed. The shower was very good. Breakfast was well cooked and substantial. All staff were friendly and welcoming. Would definitely stay again.

Oh Dear, another Pub totally unaware of the current disability regulations. There isn't a ramp, there are even any same level flooring, upon enquiring with one of the staff regarding access to the premises, by one in a wheelchair, we were curtly reminded that this was a traditional Public House, who don#t cater for those with mobility issues! Such a shame as my friend had his legs blown off in Afghanistan, and is a hero.
