Masala Zone Islington

St Mary's, Islington, 20-30£
25/07/2020: This was our first meal out in months. It was unplanned but as we walked past the shady terrace with few tables occupied, we decided to go for it. Extremely professional welcome and adherence to safety. This is a lovely retreat in the heart of Islington serving superb Indian street food. We were happy to be back.
19/07/2020: My partner and I went to this restaurant for an evening meal having read positive review online. We were somewhat disappointed with the meal and service. Our waitress came back twice to check parts of our order (which wasn’t complex at all) rather than writing our order down. The food came too quickly so that we didn’t have a chance to enjoy the food and the atmosphere. The main course came five minutes after the starters. It felt like they wanted to serve the food and get you out of the restaurant as quick as possible. The papadum portion was not very impressive. The Chicken Saffron Korma did not look natural - it was a bright yellow colour. The lamb biriyani was average. The sides of potatoes and rice were nice but nothing special. Overall an average meal. We did use a 20% off offer from the Masala Zone website which was a positive.

Afghan Kitchen

St Peter's, Islington
05/09/2020: My daughter and I visited the Afghan Kitchen for the second time on 4 September. Once again they still only accept cash, four years on from our last visit for dinner. We duly withdrew cash from a nearby machine and ordered lunch, which was somewhat expensive for what it was, including £3.50 for a bowl of rice and £7.00 for dhall. The non-itemised bill came to £25.00 which I paid. We left feeling underwhelmed by the microwaved meal itself and then realised the bill should have only been £21.00 and not the £25.00 charged - rather a generous rounding up by the manageress, which we figured out after we left. The food itself, whilst microwaved, was tasty, but not especially Afghan. I say that as someone who has lived in the country and visited over 40 times in recent years. Sad to say, we do not expect to make a third visit,
04/08/2020: We went there with our friends to celebrate birthday party. The restaurant is small and cosy and the food is to share. Meals were extremely delicious and we ordered extras. Waitresses were helping all the time. Overall, strongly recommended.
