This was our 2nd visit within 6 months. First visit was lovely food but male waiter far too over the top with the service. Bordering on creepy. So the second visit yesterday was to eradicate the negatives on the first visit. On arrival, no booking, staff were very polite and helpful. But again....They were very over the top with service. Very creepy and to the point were it actually feels like stalking. Food was excellent but the puddings tasted a bit pinged. So if you like great food and to be over the top waited on...this is your place!

Walking along Upper Street , we were looking to find somewhere to eat early evening before a football match . We were struck by the choices on offer at Zoe and the two courses for £16 looked very reasonable . We had to wait outside with a drink as they were preparing the restaurant but once inside we were served with only a short wait ( but long enough so you know the food was freshly prepared )Food was DELICOUS ! I had scallops followed by rabbit , my OH had boudin with poached egg and then a beautiful pink duck breast .We were the only guests in therestaurant so can't say anything about the atmosphere but the young man ( owner ? Manager .. I should have asked ) who looked after us was really nice and could not have been more helpful .Now , I love good food and I can promise you the food in Zoe's is every bit as good as the other reviews on TA have said . We were hideously late thanks to my son tracking the entire length of London to get there. However the guy in charge couldn't have been more pleasant and accommodating, we sat down a full hour late and eat the most delicious food in our entire trip. The scallops I had were sublime, and all four in our party were delighted with everything in front of them. And not a huge bill either. Overall an excellent experience ( and a free slice of cheesecake just to taunt us because none of us could face a dessert)

After reading the reviews we decided to book for Sunday lunch time to celebrate our Zoee's birthday. We travelled up from Kent and were a little apprehensive when we saw the outside not what we has envisaged. Once entering the restaurant we were greeted with a very warm welcome by the owner who was very attentive during the whole of our meal. Nothing was to much trouble. There was even a bunch of red roses for Zoee and cocktails to make the day very special. The decor was outstandingly different.Beautiful hot bread and olives were brought to our table whilst we tried to select our meal. The choice was extensive and read like a dream. There were six of us in our party for starters we chose were snails (in lovely garlic butter), scallops,Mussels, black pudding with poached egg, asparagus with poached egg. We could not fault the starters at all giving 10/10. The main courses we ordered were duck, sea food, veal, fish all agreed once agin in 10/10. To end a perfect Sunday lunch time a cheesecake birthday cake arrived candles included. We all agree that if this restaurant was in our area it would be packed as the quality, service and food was excellent.Come to Kent you have already 6 regularsThank you all at Zoe' you made our Zoee' birthday one to remember.

I have eaten here twice. Both occasions have been absolutely superb. Last month I brought my friend here. We had a lovely table by the window. Staff here are so friendly and so welcoming, attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant is very pretty. The food here is out of this world, cooked to perfection. The staff are happy to recommend wine and know the menu expertly. The Brie soufflé starter is the best you will get anywhere. The food is all so fresh. On this visit I had the lamb shank and highly recommend it! My friend had a seafood pancake I think and also really enjoyed it. We shared a cheeseboard after dinner and enjoyed the recommended desert wine. We then were brought complimentary cake which went down a treat! I have promised the restaurant a "recommended on Trip Advisor" sticker for the window. As a destination expert on TA, I get these to hand out when I visit somewhere that exceeds all expectations. I have only ever given out 2 in three years. Zoe's is the perfect example of a restaurant that deserves to be recognised. I can't wait to visit again!

I was recently taken to Zoe by my daughter to celebrate my birthday. I had a wonderful time. I assume they do this for every 'birthday' customer, but I was welcomed with a lovely bunch of red roses and was offered several complimentary drinks - including port with my cheese. Luckily, the food was also delicious. I had calves liver to begin with, and although it was a little more cooked than I had asked for, it was still very full of flavour and well presented. I followed that with duck breast, which was cooked perfectly - quite rare - with plenty of vegetables, that were also just right. There were seven of us altogether and everyone said how much they enjoyed the food. Service was attentive and friendly and I would definitely go there again, for an ordinary dinner as well as a celebration.

My partner booked a table for my 20th birthday, he loves tripadvisor (as do I) and therefore booked the restaurant on reading the good reviews. We came at 3pm on a Sunday, which was ultimately a very quiet time, as it is at many restaurants, so we ended up being the only table there. The staff were lovely, the decor was slightly tacky, but it did liven up the restaurant and made it a little more unique than your off the peg plain restaurant style that is so popular in London. We ordered olive bread for a starter, which was gorgeous, and all three of us opted to try the kangaroo, as none of us had eaten it before. The meat was lovely, and the sauce it was served in was a great addition. However the chips that came with it were clearly not home made and came straight from a packet. Chips are easy to make from scratch and taste a hell of a lot better, so that was a slight let down.We all opted to share a slice of the cookie cheesecake which was lovely, and were given free almond liquor and a free chocolate moose for my birthday! All of these touches were lovely. My one issue was that the manager was a little pushy, a little full on. He needed to take more of a backseat and to stop trying to push drinks.Other than that, I loved it. I would like to return, probably in the evening when it's got more of a buzz and those colourful lights can make an impression.

Our starters were light and delicious (perfect tiger prawns and vegetable tempura!), followed by main courses which we couldn't resist sharing a little as they were so beautifully cooked and flavourful (both duck breast and rabbit casserole were adorned by sumptuous, well balanced sauces). Crepes chocolate completed a superb evening with chocolatey delight. We both want to return and try more of Zoe's tastebud tempting menu. . . perhaps next time with a mojito cocktail or two!

I think our expectations were high here bearing in mind ratings on Trip Advisor. The restaurant is quite small and either intimate or claustrophobic depending upon your point of view. Parking in Islington is awful but most will arrive by tube or taxi. The owner and staff are very friendly and helpful and also happy to engage in conversation. It is clearly a well run restaurant. Service was good and quick especially as we were in a rush. The cocktails are some of the best I have had and there is an adequate and reasonably priced wine list. The fish courses are well presented and tasty. My wrapped and stuffed chicken I thought rather ordinary and the serving was too large - unlike most french restaurants. The calamari starters were deep fried and could have been more innovative. The prices are quite reasonable and it is potentially a very enjoyable restaurant. We will certainly return in the near future.

I discovered Zoe just after it first opened through Tastecard. Being one of the few that you can use a Tastecard at on a Saturday we decided to try it. Since then we must have been 20 times. The staff are generally friendly and attentive, although we saw a new face last time who turned when we presented our Tastecard, almost as if he was disappointed he had been so nice to us! This is out of the ordinary though and isn't someone we have seen since. I have the same starter every time - the scallops. They are incredible, probably the best I have had. They are so good I often recreate the flavours at home (or at least try to). The various mains I have had are generally very good, although there are the odd problems. Lamb here tends to often be over cooked or fatty. The steaks are always cooked to perfection but I don't like the sauce they give you with it. As a young business I think they are still trying to establish the direction they should take as the menu is a bit odd, although great choice. It certainly isn't french, more an amalgamation (nothing french about Kangaroo fillet!) Great for a Saturday night if you don't want to spend too much

Ok, so the service is a little sloppy and the place a little claustrophobic, but that's all part of the charm. I actually cut my fillet steak with a fork. So tender and beautifully cooked. My hubby's kangaroo was equally excellent. I pride myself on being a steak tartare expert and my starter-sized portion was the best I've had outside of Paris. Diners are spoilt for choice in Islington, but really great places are hard to find. This one just joined that short list. Not an obvious choice for a business meeting but it turned out to be a good one. Great cocktails and a varied menu. A few minor presentational issues, the menu is in a plastic binder, rather more suited to a cheap cafe and french fries were quite obviously of the oven variety, but did not take away from the overall experience. Really good service, live but unintrusive music this place deserves to succeed. If you can accept it's a little rough around the edges, overall an excellent addition to the area.

Following the previous night's disaster (also reviewed here, if you want to avoid making the same mistake) I was in need of a good meal out and Zoe had been on the to-do list for a while. It's a nice place to be - neither over lit nor dingy. The background soundtrack was a nice level - in fact we were the only people in there. This usually doesn't bode well, but even given that people are tightening their wallets just after Xmas, in the event I have no idea why this was the case. So there was no excuse for anything other than great service, which it was - attentive without being intrusive,Our starters were a steak tartare and frogs legs, which were both delicious. My kangaroo fillet was different and decent and Mrs spursforlife hit the jackpot with the beef fillet tournedo - you don't expect such a depth of flavour for this level of money. The desserts were fine - if anything they didn't quite live up to the standard that had been set previously but there really was no cause for complaint.Portions were very generous - even greedy so and so's that we are were struggling to finish, and the amount of alcohol in the cocktails was evidently at the level you'd pour yourself. Spirits on the house were then a nice touch to finish off with.In summary, it was (excluding tip) £80 for two times three courses, plus bread/olives, wine and cocktails. On this evidence it represents pretty unbeatable value for money which is why I'm happy to give Zoe a solid 5 out of 5.

We first went to Zoes about 6 weeks ago and we were the couple that walked out after our starters, (mentioned a few reviews below). To be brief, the night was pretty bad, from waiting an age to be sat down, to our starters arriving 20 minutes apart. After that, we decided to pay for our drinks and leave, and they charged us nothing for the bill. The staff couldn’t be more apologetic and explained that, they had a party of 20 people who had arrived late, and ordered their food nearly 90 minutes late, which then impacted everything else, as well as their head chef being away. We paid for our wine, and left adter our startersI received a call the next day from the manager of the restaurant , apologising about the evening, and asked us to return, for a 2 course menu each, on the house. Purely because of the fact that he went out of his way to phone me and apologise, made me want to return and give it another try so two weeks later we visited again, and I am so glad we did. First of all, the service was great, the manager greeted us, showed us to our table and then we were served drinks straight away. The cocktails were a nice touch, I had a strawberry champagne cocktail to start with which was divine, and we finished our dinner with Espresso Martinis, The food itself, cheese soufflé was lovely , it was delicious. I had the pork belly for mains and the bf had the lamb shanks, again, cooked perfectly, delicious, tasty, and hearty food. We couldn’t believe the difference in everything from the food, atmosphere and service. The manager again apologised for the night we had previously, sent us over free cocktails and generally went out of his way to ensure we had a fantastic night, and we most definitely did!We returned last weekend for a third time, and again, the food and service was brilliant. The waitress remembered us, remembered our order from last time, and we just had another great meal and another great evening out. Really nice, friendly attentive staff, and good food. This place is a gem, and with or without a tastecard – is well worth a visit.

We visited this lovely little restaurant in Islington last Sunday lunchtime taking advantage of a special last minute deal (£16.50 for two courses) for our party of 5. From the moment we stepped in the staff were so friendly and helpful. They asked us if we were there for a special occasion (and in fact it was part of a birthday treat followed by a game at Arsenal FC) and then surprised him with a chocolate creme brulee with a large sparkler candle in it, and the waiter led the singing of Happy Birthday to him! On arriving I asked for a Bellini cocktail - when it later transpired that everyone else was going to have a bottle of Prosecco, he offered to bring the Bellini peach liquer to the table for me in a little shot glass. This was not added to the bill. The food was delicious (I couldn't resist the Crepe Suzette for afters - haven't had the pleasure of seeing this on the menu for a very long time - and it didn't disappoint) - clean plates all round! We shall certainly return when we are next in this area and look forward to another great eating experience. The wonderful service really added to our enjoyment.

It took an hour for our starters to arrive, one of which was "calamari with homemade tartare sauce". The calamari was dry and out of a freezer bag and the tartare sauce was certainly not homemade. The main course took another 45 minutes to arrive, by which point the couple opposite us had eaten their starter, given up and left. Table next to us sent all their mains back. We visited after reading all the tripadvisor reviews and genuinely wonder if we were at the same restaurant!! We were. All in all, dire - disappointing. I had mentioned in my booking that we were coming for my boyfriend's birthday, and it was really nice that they went all out - made him a birthday drink, gave us some ameretto each, and a birthday dessert all on the house. All the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and it's a really nice and intimate atmosphere. This is such a great little find, and definitely one of my favourite restaurants in London! What's more, even without a taste card booking the prices are really fair for the excellent quality food you get - can't recommend it highly enough.

I have been to Zoe twice in the past 6 weeks and on both occasions we were given a warm welcome and received excellent service. The menu is varied and there are good options for vegetarians - I especially loved the asparagus tart I had for a starter the first time. The main food was piping hot which was great (the side orders weren't so much though) and the desserts were delicious.Zoe is a lovely place with pleasant decor and music that isn't intrusive and I would recommend it for couples. I will definitely eat there again.

Don't quite know how I came across Zoe Restaurant originally but ever since my first time there, it has been one of my faves. The food, all three times, has been wonderful. I have had the pork belly every time I have gone there and it never disappoints. The desserts are also very good. The service is fantastic. The two guys that run the restaurant are lovely. This place really is worth a visit. Especially for a romantic meal for two.

From the outside this restaurant doesn't look anything special however was a nice mid week night out with my boyfriend. There was a live pianist which created a calming atmosphere. Starters were nice but quite small portions. Main courses we chose were lamb and duck which were very tasty! Wine wasn't the best but cocktails are better. Recommend the honeycomb cheesecake for dessert was very nice. Overall this restaurant was a nice find and would definitely go back sometime.

I went here for my sister's birthday and we had a great time. Upon arrival she was given complimentary flowers and a complimentary cocktail by the manager who is very friendly and helpful. Ate at this restaurant last night and had a wonderful time. Charming staff, including the owner (Zoe's Dad), pleasant buzzy atmosphere, delicious food and all for £35 per head for starters, mains, extra vegetables, deserts and drinks. The place itself is lovely has nice decor and a great atmosphere and was perfect for our occasion. Our waiter even flagged down a black cab for us at the end. Full marks for concept. Put a modern French restaurant on a busy strip, interesting art deco lighting, an ambitious menu, and they will come. This must have been the theory behind 'Zoe', and it's a good plan. Unfortunately, there appears to be 'Zero Operational Expertise' in actually running the thing, and pretty much every part of it is done badly. The Decor looks bright and innovative in the photos, but it's tired and tacky up close. The peculiar pink lights hang low above the tables and distract rather than add to the environment. Look too close at the fixtures and fittings and you'll wish you hadn't. The Menus seem to be written for 6-9 year olds, huge fonts and naff formatting. The food is not strong. It's not expensive but you pay for what you get. A cheese souffle turned out to be a wobbly, aerated-quiche style concoction balancing precariously on an overdressed salad. Steak tartare was so over seasoned it could have been made of chinese newspapers for all we could taste. Pork belly was dry but swimming in packet style sauce, creamed spinach was straight out of an iceland freezer bag, and the unfortunate sea creatures in the bouillabaisse had not seen the ocean in some time. It's exactly what you'd expect if someone who had no idea how to run a French restaurant read the Wikihow on french restaurants and just dived in.And finally, service. I hate to criticise service beause it's tough being in any customer facing role, but it really was clueless. Firstly, with me and my companion clearly looking for a nice, quiet dinner, it's tedious to be interrupted by three separate staff asking if we'd ordered. Secondly, the sales patter is not appreciated. Sure, show off the specials, but after that you've already given us all the sales and marketing we need in the form of the menu, which whilst it may be written to suit 8 year old reading levels, should not mean you assume that's the reading level of your customers. Oh, and at the end of the meal our thankfully empty wine bottle was casually smashed on the floor by the waitress, which is gutting, and not the reason for this scathing review, I only mention it because it was such a tragic but strangely appropriate end to the meal. There are a hell of a lot of good places on upper street, go try them, give this off the shelf, hastily slapped together effort a miss.

Good choice on our offered menu and then given additional options, maybe an indication of stock held but the restaurant was well patronised. Sensibly gave us a nominated person as key contact and all staff involved kept up attention levels. Virtually all group enjoyed every course and many emptied plates which were well presented reasonable portions. Only thing I would change for a group dynamic was ordering dessert in advance, a minor logistic. Chef and team produced well with attention and feedback.Although limited by space, place could do with brightening or inserting extra capacity bathroom as queuing oft occurred. Sure many of our group will return in smaller units and the staff were welcoming throughout

We had dinner twice at Zoe, a French restaurant without the French. This place is a find. We’d go back in a heartbeat when in London again. (We were in London only 2 nights, and after dining there our first night booked for the following night as well.) The food is superbly prepared, the atmosphere pleasantly casual, and the service outstanding. The restaurant looks rather non-descript from the street, but inside is charming and cozy with painted scenes on the wall. The manager / owner knocks himself out to see that you find the dining experience enjoyable. Value is superb.

On arrival they gave us a lovely table, nothing but polite and friendly staff all evening. The food was really delicious, especially the duck. As it was my boyfriend's birthday, they made the effort of asking his favourite drink and then bringing it over for him along with a birthday cheesecake!! They then continued to ply us with drinks on the house! An amazing experience and thoroughly recommended. We got cocktails, wine, mains and dessert and the bill for two was £66 - very reasonable! When we arrived at Zoe's and saw the exterior I was concerned that we had not chosen wisely for an evening of fine dining - as others have said it is not very impressive and from a marketing point of view does not suggest quality food. However, we were greeted warmly and once inside the ambience definitely improved. Nevertheless when I saw the extensive menu I again had concerns as experience has taught me that often the larger the menu the lower the quality. How wrong could I be! By the end of the evening I and my companions were singing the praises of Zoe's both in terms of the quality of the food and the excellent service. To give just one example I chose the beef fillet tournedo for my mains - and full marks to Zoe's for quite rightly eschewing the over-used and unnecessary "steak knife". The steak itself was cooked exactly as I requested, was beautifully tender, and came with a divine truffle sauce. My companions were equally delighted with their meals. The only major concern I have is that from the comments of other reviews and observations on the night it would appear that the restaurant runs timings very tightly in their desire to maximise covers. To be fair the staff deal extremely well with customers who arrive to find their table not ready but it is an area to which they should pay attention if they wish to avoid disgruntled customers. Equally it is worth noting that there were a large number of regular customers and this would suggest that they are doing a good job. Finally I would say that value for money is outstanding - the four of us paid £32 a head for a meal which consisted of pre - dinner drinks, starter, main meal, bottle of wine (£25) and coffee. As always the bottom line is would we go back again - actually I can't wait!

The staff could not have been lovelier, the food was tasty and the decor was very pleasant. I took my girlfriend here for a romantic birthday and it did well to offer up a little piece of French flare to our evening. On first thought, the restaurant doesn't look like much, a small entrance on an otherwise busy high street. This changed on entry, the atmosphere was intimate and romantic, the hanging lights over each table being my own personal highlight. The service was prompt and friendly throughout, complimentary and attentive to our needs. The food was very good, especially the mains. I had a duo of Guinea Foal and Duck Breast which was absolutely lovely and full of flavour. My girlfriend had the Beef Bourguignon, which was also extremely tasty. The staff also helped celebrate my partners special day, treating us to a complementary desert and singing happy birthday. I just wish they had done it before we had already ordered and eaten our deserts. We had cocktails throughout the evening which were tasty, strong and very good value. All together we spent £75 for a 3 course meal and drinks which was extremely good value for money, especially with how nice the food was. My only criticism is I just don't think it is that great as a special occasion destination . It is a nice little restaurant but you wouldn't take anyone there to impress them or show off. It is somewhere you want to visit once in a while for a nice meal, not for anything special. Nevertheless, a great little restaurant that I would definitely go back to, but maybe just for a treat.

I recently visited Zoe's Restaurant in Upper Street Islington using a Tastecard. I was greeted by the owner (Ronnie) who was friendly and welcoming. The restaurant itself was well lit and decorated in a kitsch way which wasn't pretentious or uncomfortable. I was quickly shown the menu and asked if drinks were required. The menu was varied and well laid out. I had the scallops to start with (5.95) which were cooked perfectly and that was followed by the beef bourguignon in red wine (10.95) which was soft and full of flavour. This came was accompanied with mash. I also had a side order of cauliflower cheese and creamy spinach (2.95). The food overall was delicious and is definitely a place that I will revisit again. The service was attentive and the prices extremely good considering what we had and where the restaurant is located. Service was excellent and in no way overbearing. Highly recommended especially as the tastecard made it even better value. I will definitely be returning.

Notionally this is described as a French restaurant but in truth you'd be hard pressed to notice it from first impressions. It's very discreetly tucked away on Upper Street amongst more outlandish restaurants. Once inside the décor is ambiguously modern and not particularly French. To add to the confusion we had a (very friendly and helpful) Indian waiter and the menu is an amalgam of dishes from Italy, France and elsewhere. The food on the menu sits uncomfortably between pub food and high end restaurant offerings but the quality veers far more towards the latter. For starter we had nice warm bread, a Carpaccio and some battered shrimp. The Carpaccio was slightly better than average with very thinly cut meat but not the necessary accoutrements to the dish to make it stand out, especially with a total lack of salad. The battered shrimp was average fair and could have been served up in a gastro pub.A fairly ominous start was followed by some superb main courses. The salmon was freshly steamed and immaculately tasty, and the side dish of mashed potato was fluffy and well herbed. The pork belly was succulent and incredibly tender, full of flavour and was a very generous portion. It came with a really nice mustard sauce and mash potato. The side vegetables were very tasty as well. The portions were so good that we had to forgo desert and the bill came in at a reasonable price. A strange but pleasant enough eating experience.

I used to live in this area when Zoe opened up last year and it's my favorite restaurant to go on Upper Street. The service is easily the best of any of the options in the area, and the owner - Ronnie - is always around to welcome customers. We wondered why this place was so quiet when every other restaurant in Upper Street seemed busy. Perhaps because none of the food was any good. The menu is very extensive and it seems they are trying to do too many different dishes particularly when the place is not busy. I thought some of it might be frozen food defrosted/cooked at the last minute. It was like very poor bar food. Staff members were trying hard but were too intrusive. In my opinion this is not a serious ("French?") restaurant and I cannot understand how it is so highly rated on Tripadvisor. The Tripadvisor rating was the reason we went.

Fabulous little cafe. I had to wait for a seat to become free but I spent the time looking at their interesting range of mainly French foodstuffs. The coffee is excellent. They source it from Monmouth in London so you just know it’s going to be first class. They only do the one size latte though, so I had to have a second one! The pain au chocolat I had with it was as good as it gets. If I lived in Stortford I wouldn’t other going anywhere else.
