Zari in Crawley

Where do you want me to start, the starter was just disgusting, the lamb dish was just bones and sauce no meat whatsoever, the desert looked like diarrhea. We had to wait forever for our drink that came with the meal, wait forever for the dishes and for the table to be cleared, the restaurant wasn't even close to busy. we actually asked for the bill at the same time we asked if they were going to bother clearing the mains and bring desert as people had been waiting ages for the bill and we still had to ask twice, the fruit on the desert was still frozen so couldn't be eaten. Then charged £40 for 3 drinks. It absolutely was not worth the £160 spent and feel like it was a complete waste of money when I could of cooked better at home. Then to add insult to injury I put a comment on Facebook for it to be deleted. Had a great afternoon at the Zari restaurant having a masterclass in cooking. It was another great Christmas gift from Cherry. She knew that the Zari is my favourite Indian restaurant. The owner and her staff have the class all worked out for the 6 pupils ( max 6). Following a talk about how the philosophy of the Zari we were shown how to use spices and then how to prep. We all had a station each which are numbered so at the end of the session what you cook to get to take it home along with a folder of recipes and the apron. Fully recommend this if you enjoy good Indian food.

Official Review - Glasgow Curry Club Although we are based in Glasgow, you’ll see from our reviews that we’ve managed to eat elsewhere - including European and American destinations. This visit to Crawley was a combined business and family / friends event - which transpired to become TWO NIGHTS at Zari! To be clear, we were told this place was good. Very good. That level of recommendation doesn’t come lightly and so we had to try this place. Here goes…. The location is somewhat deceiving - in a row of shops but with easy parking & easily accessible for those in wheelchairs. The shopfront is pleasant and inviting, and once you enter you’re greeted warmly by smiling and friendly staff. Once seated, drinks arrive quickly with some poppadoms and onions. The range of food here is fantastic, and the staff can explain every choice on the menu. Service was brisk and pleasant - great chat with the waiters and always keen to help. Now the food. Phenomenal chicken tikka starters and accompaniments. Great size of portion and cooked to perfection. A nice timescale to the main course, which arrived like a royal entrance with the next set of drinks. We all (two on one evening and 4 on the next) commented on the extent of spices, the range of choices and the sheer complexity of the taste. This is top quality food which is virtually unmatched - and we don’t say that lightly. The cost was very reasonable and we had coffee to finish. We rarely rate places so highly but this was sublime and the whole experience on both nights was simply phenomenal. Highly recommended - make the journey!

Having had my self catering property fall through, I was looking for somewhere to take the family for Christmas Day. As I love cooking Christmas lunch, it had to be special for me to really enjoy it, especially as we often eat at carveries. My husband spotted the menu for Zari, who were offering a banquet style meal. We all like Indian food, although I do have an intolerance to some spices. I decided to throw caution to the wind as the Brussels and roast potatoes included helped make it a bit more Christmas's. We moved from the Crawley area 10 years ago, but prior to that frequented Zari and always had a good meal, so we had every confidence in having good Indian cuisine as opposed to a mediocre roast dinner elsewhere. They did not disappoint. In fact, they exceeded all expectations and was incredible value for money. I would have paid the £55 each (on a special occasion) on any day of the year, but to have a meal of such quality and quantity on Christmas Day was amazing. With an amuse bouche, poppadoms and pickles to whet the appetite, our mixed starters (individual plates) were chicken cooked 3 ways, each piece soft, juicy and tasty, a kebab and the most incredible king prawn. Neither of my sons like prawns, so I swapped my kebab with one of them. The other decided to try his. Afterwards, he said, not only could he not believe he'd eaten a whole prawn, but that he'd really enjoyed it. The main courses were placed I'm the middle to help ourselves and we're regularly asked if we'd like any topping up. We each had a beautiful, large leg of chicken in a mild, thick sauce. There were huge chunks of tender beef in another sauce, the chilli Brussels and spiced roast potatoes, naan, peshwari naan and chapati, rice, tender, lightly battered white fish and the most beautiful makhani daal, so good, even though we were full, we managed to get through a second bowl of it. We finished with pears poached in a delicately spiced red wine and ice cream. We washed it all down with Cobra and a rather smooth Chilean Merlot Reserva, the latter only £24 fir the bottle. Again, superb value. The atmosphere was great, the staff friendly and helpful. I don't have enough superlatives for this Christmas lunch, but I'm glad we went for Zari as it is a meal that we will always remember. My only gripe? That we live too far away to come for New Year's Eve!

This was a takeaway delivery. We have had this before and it was much better. This time Tandoori King Prawn at £15.95 we feel was too expensive for just 4 prawns! Same with Tandoori King Prawn Masala. The Lamb Rogan Josh did not have the same depth of flavour as usual. In general disappointing considering our previous much better experience.

I recently ordered a takeaway delivery service from this restaurant. The food took, unbelievably, well over 2 1/2 hours to arrive. I telephoned after having waited 90 mins, could not speak to a member of staff, so left an answerphone message requesting an update. I eventually got through to someone, without any indication as to when I could expect delivery. In mitigation it was claimed delays had been caused by an excess of orders, and traffic related problems. Surely if this had been the case when orders placed, it would have been sensible to let customers know and allow them the option of cancelling. In compensation I received a complimentary popadom!! The food had obviously not been coordinated, as one dish was acceptably hot, the other cold. I have raise two email complaints, only for these both to be ignored. Clearly the restaurant considers appalling service and a lack of communication to be permissible, and justified in charging full price. I would strongly advise not to order a takeaway service from Zari Crawley.

This is the best Indian restaurant I've ever been to! The surroundings are beautiful (screens and artworks from India), the food is delicious, and the service is efficient, polite and friendly.

I have been to many curry restaurants in my time and this rates really average looks great when you walk in I had a king prawn dish the prawns was small and mushy my granddaughter had chicken tikka masala and it was rank spicy and flavour less be aware do not no where they are getting there reviews from but in my experience not accurate

Food was poor quality, the restaurant try’s to make the food fine dining without the quality or taste, ordered starters - crab and prawns, 2x small prawns for £8 and dry frozen crab with no flavour. Mains were very plain, the lamb was dry and mushy as if it had been mushed up and very over cooked and wasn’t pleasant. Chicken korma was dry and no sauce. The waiter then argued about paying service charge and would not let us leave until I paid a discretionary service charge and said it was compulsory. Very rude and unnecessary also very strange clientele in the restaurant being waited on? Seemed as if clientele were going repeatedly to the toilet to do drugs which the staff allowed. Will not return unfortunately and a local who would have enjoyed the restaurant.

We got a take away for 5 people for my son’s birthday, his choice was Zaris. We paid over £70 for a main dish each and a selection of rices and sides. I had the Koria and it was dry with the lamb being over cooked and very mushy. For the money we paid we were very dissatisfied. I’m sure eating in would be better but if you’re going to Steve take away at the same price at least make it the same quality !

It was a great dinner experience in an Indian restaurant. The service and food were truly amazing. I would love to come again to enjoy this different taste.

Came here for dinner after being recommended the place by several others, and from the moment we walked in to the restaurant the staff were at our service. Very attentive, pleasant and friendly, without ever being intrusive. The food we had was very tasty, and nicely presented. Would definitely return. Highly recommended.

I thought that the food was exceptional as was the service I experienced at the Restaurant. Each encounter my dining guest and I had with the staff from the moment we walked in... and throughout the meal until we left was not only to a high standard of service but also carried out with an attitude that complimented the meal which made the evening a memorable one.

We came here after checking in for an overnight stop-over for an early flight the next morning. It's only ten minutes from Gatwick Airport. My wife had read a few reviews that included the phrase "family run" which always draws us in. Don't let the location at the end of a strip of small shops put you off. Service was attentive, charming and knowledgeable throughout. The dips and sauces that came with the poppadoms were all home made and it was the best mango chutney that has ever passed my lips. Even the poppaoms were exceptional! I had the Chicken 65 starter, my wife had the Spiced Crab and we shared meat samosas. If anything the spiced crab was a slight disappointment but the samosas and the Chicken 65 were sensational, both boasting really subtle yet piquant spices. For the mains we had tender, richly flavoured Sussex Hill lamb chops, Chicken Chettinad, with mushroom rice and the lightest plain naan bread I've ever eaten. My wife was enjoying her meal so much I had to fight to get even a morsel to taste! We shared home made pistachio ice cream for dessert and that too was wonderful. I've eaten at highly regarded Indian restaurants in Central London and I was born and raised in East London so Brick Lane and it's array of Indian/ Pakistani restaurants was a regular haunt of mine. I have also eaten in some highly regarded restaurants that I visited in Goa. However, I can honestly say that the meal I had here at Zari was the best Indian meal I have ever eaten in the UK.

I was on a business trip and took my wife with me to this restaurant. Found this as I was looking for a good restaurant with good reviews. We could not believe the service and the food quality. they were very expensive but not worth a penny. The food potions were very small too. Just taste like tomato sauce with added salt and chili powder. Go and try if don't believe.

What has happened to this restaurant? The Zari was always my go to choice for an eat in or takeaway Indian meal. I understand the world has changed and restaurants have had to adapt, so during lockdown being kept waiting an hour for my meal was understandable as the restaurant learned to cope, the second time was an inconvenience as again we waited nearly half an hour after they said it would be ready. So third time lucky? I placed my order 5 hours before I wanted it, paid for it in advance and asked the restaurant to confirm it would be ready at that time, which they did, if they hadn’t I would have gone elsewhere. Well here I am 15 minutes after it should have been ready still waiting.

I ordered a take away for this evening, and live out of Crawley (Handcross)My first review is for the fabulous delivery man, who found our cottage with no problem ( no-one else has) - I fully expected to wait for him on the roadside, but he found us, knocked the door, and was bang on time.The food, as expected was stunning, generous portions, and extremely tasty.Congratulations to Zari, and their fab delivery man!

We ordered a take away for 2 people last night we haven't eaten in or ordered a takeaway from Zari's before. I looked at the online menu but it wasn't very comprehensive and some of the dishes lacked any detail. It was impossible to tell if a dish was spicy or mild. I telephoned the restaurant and explained I was looking to place an order but just needed to ask a few questions . The lady I spoke to was rude, abrupt and monosyllabic. I asked if a dish was hot and got a "No" answer with no further elaboration. I guess I should have known then! ok it sounded busy but really if you don't want to speak to potential customers at least put a decent description of the dishes online. I ordered a Prawn Caldine and my partner a "famous red mutton curry" My dish was watery, lacked flavour and the prawns were overcooked and rubbery, It wasn't cheap but most of it went in the bin. My partner and I couldn't quite work out why the mutton was famous. The meat was tender but served in a very thick sauce, there were no other flavours like tomato, onion or pepper. You could have just chucked a jar of heated curry paste over it. The onion salad, popadam and mint sauce along with the naan were ok but nothing outstanding and this cost nearly £40. I think I will stick to my tried and tested restaurant / takeaway in Three Bridges in future. Much better quality and far less expensive and they are very helpful if I call to ask about certain dishes.

This the second time we have ordered a take away from Zari, first time was a disaster and we thought we would give them another try this evening to support a local business.The order was placed as soon as restaurant opened and took 1.5 hrs before we received it. I have never had to wait that long for a take away!! When I called up about it I got the impression they wait for a number of delivery orders to come in before cooking and delivering them. The food was nice, not amazing, but decent enough. It’s a shame as we are local to them.

We ordered a takeaway at 7:30 for delivery. We were told our order would be with us within an hour. The hour passed and no food arrived. We phoned the restaurant to ask where the delivery was and we were told the food hadn’t even left for delivery. When we asked to cancel the order and have a refund, we were told we were being awkward as they were busy. We were told the food would arrive within another half an hour. Can’t say what the food was like as it’s now fast approaching 9 and no food has arrived yet.We have used Zari several times before. Won’t bother anymore.

We revisited after a long time away and we were pleased with our meal and service. Things are a little different at the moment due to covid but that didn’t change to delicious taste of the food and the friendly staff who looked after us. Yes it’s a bit pricey but we felt it was worth it. Recommend the Red Mutton Curry and the Lamb Tikka Masala.

We booked here for our wedding anniversary , we've had take away from here a few times . They should be award winning we had the best meal ever and my teenager was gobsmacked by the taste and tenderness of his meat first time at an Indian restaurant . Down side I called to amend my booking, didn't happen and on arrival the person didn't seem to believe me . We waited nearly an hour for our meal ... not good but we had poppadoms but after that 45 mins for food. Some of the waiters where spending alot of time talking to their regulars that's fine but made newcomers feel less important and uncomfortable .They where rushed of their feet. Bless them . When paid didn't get a receipt of breakdown waiter went off.. I will return but the only thing I hope is that the same courtesy be given to new customers because that's why they come back rather than smooshing the existing ones . X

My family and I had a wonderful experience at Zari’s. The food was incredible, the service was friendly and prompt. This was our first outing since March and they didn’t disappoint. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I visited on wednesday.i usually have my standard chicken korma but instead had an Alleppey fish curry having been there last year. The curry was delicious! Slightly spicy but it was perfect. Absolutely loved it and will come again as my partner lives round the corner.Definite recommendation

First time ordering from Zari and was very impressed. Delicious and authentic-tasting sauces, beautifully well-cooked meats (we had lamb rogan josh and chicken dopiaza) and interesting and varied veggie dishes. Naan was a little thin and dense for my taste but more than made up for by the rest of the order. Will be revisiting for certain!

Have used Zara’s a few times over the years, got a takeaway last night & was reminded of how good their food is, especially the chicken tikka pathia 😋. Staff friendly, group meal clean plates all round. Must go more often! Would highly recommend.

After reading some great reviewis thought we would give it a go and use thier delivery service. The portions were very small Had a Chicken Tikka Starter 5 small pieces, Tikka Masala and Jalfrezi both had a small amount of chicken and The Keema Nan was the thinest Nan with a sprinkle of meat no flavour at all The main meals had good flavour but we felt we would be sticking to our usuals in futureDelivery was bang on time

So good to finally get to eat out after lockdown and where better than Zari! Really good social distancing measures made me feel safe and valued.First time ordering from their new vegan menu which was brilliant, especially as the side dishes can also be used for main courses.I had the Dosa which has always been a favorite of mine. This vegan version was wonderful, a beautiful light rice pancake filled with beautifully spiced lentils and vegetables with a South Indian vegetable curry and a coconut chutney on the side. So lovely, I could eat it all over again this morning. My main was a vegetable Chettinand which I had with extra heat delicious with the perfectly steamed rice and vegan nan which is a real treat as most nan contain milk.My fellow dinners all had various fish dishes sea bass, crab and avocado, south Indian fish curry and prawns and they all loved their dishes. Such an extensive range of speciality dishes that I don't see in many restaurants really good if you are vegan, vegetarian or pescitarian but also for meat eaters.Great wine list too.Highly recommend.Thank you to Sandeep and his lovely team for making our first meal out post lockdown such a lovely one we'll be back soon!

Haven’t used Zari for a takeaway for a number of years. But after a long day decided to treat my partner and I to a meal, ordering over £40 of food. I was disappointed, if I was using the restaurant I would have sent it back! The keema naan cold and doughy, rice cold and hard, the vegetables just awful, mushroom bhajee dry and rubbery, the sag bhajee was in a world of its own, colour was grey/green and tasteless. Onion bhajee dripping with oil and the texture of an ice hockey puck. The actual curry’s were of a standard expected from one of the better restaurants in Crawley. Zari need up up their game to justify these prices.

We don’t normally get a takeaway curry but decided to as a treat for our anniversary and we have heard some good reports of your restaurant. We choose chicken saag, chicken rogan, 2x rice, samosas, naan x2 and popadums - this cake to £44 + we had to pay £4.95 service charge and £2.95 for delivery. Came to over £50. I have to say my initial thoughts when I opened it up was ‘there’s not much there’. 2 samosas which were more like dumplings, pastry was hard and not your normal filo. Hubby really enjoyed the rogan but I have to say my saag was bland although plenty of well cooked chicken. Rice was nice would of liked more flavour in the mushroom rice though. The best part for me was the onion salad.... that was delicious.For our first take away curry I have to say we were both disappointed.

We ordered the BBQ range this evening to cook at home. Perfect for a hot summers evening. Marinated chicken Lamb Tikka and Sheek Kebab all of the meat was tender and delicious all of the family voted it to be the best! such a great idea Zari we will be coming back for more. Thank You.

I have eaten in many Indian restaurants over the last 50 years. And have to say this is not what I am used to. Chicken tikka masala should be in a rich creamy Sauce. Theirs was a watery yellow bile. When I cut the chicken it was clearly a watery pink inside. It also had a different texture to cooked chicken. I returned the dish and was told by the main lady taking the orders that their chicken is pink!! And that it was cooked. There was no way I was going to risk my health on her word against what my eyes saw. I did get a full refund on the meal. I’m sure they will reply to this stating I was wrong and the chicken was cooked. But beware, I know what cooked chicken should look like and this was raw!!!Just a note, the popadoms taste of age cooking oil.

We ordered a takeaway delivery from Zari last night. We got our order after 1 hour 45 mins. It was cold so we had to re heat in the microwave. Not to mention we paid £67 and the portion sizes were tiny, barely any meat and each foil container at least half empty. My partner called up straight away because the portion size was ridiculous for what we have paid for and the women said she would call us back in 1 hour. The lady on the phone didn’t even apologise which makes it even worse. She didn’t call us after an hour so we had to call her. She was very defensive and said someone will get back to us tomorrow between 1-2 , zari never called back so my partner called them again and said they had a meeting about this complaint and that they would get the someone to call back. They did not call back and just sent an email instead saying we could get 10 percent off our next order. An absolute insult???!!! We always get our Indian from here and I have even told the lady at the front before how nice the food was before now so I’m very disappointed and won’t be going back again, as we have wasted our money! I will not be recommending this Indian anymore.

Due to current events we were unable to visit this amazing restaurant-no matter they now deliver...,,with wine. Utterly stunning as usual. Thank you. Can not recommend highly enough

Had a takeaway from here 3 weeks in a row now and every meal has been excellent and the same quality. They even deliver now. Highly recommended.

Had a great takeaway last Friday night before all dine in restaurants were required to close cos of CV19. Zari has been a feature of our lives for well over 10 years, whether for Friday night curry dining in or out (to call it a "curry" underestimates the quality of the food, the wonderful array of flavours) or for family events.No idea how anyone can give Zari's food a bad review, unless they prefer the lurid orange and yellow slop that passes for south asian cuisine in other restaurants with far lower standards.It is fair to say that sometimes if the restaurant is busy things can take a while, but it's always worth the wait..

Just dont expect to get that amount of food in your tray the portions sizes are s**t I'm told by the rude arrogent lady that answered the phone its about quality not quantity expect there was no quantity to determine the quality. £40 spent on my last takeaway and no way was there £40 worth of food supplied disgusting will not go back ever again and this is a warning to everyone so you know what to expect

We've been going to Zari ever since we have lived in Crawley, so have our neighbors. At the weekend we finally decided to try their Cookery Masterclass. I have to say I am incredibly disappointed that I haven't done it sooner! What a great experience, we were welcomed by Almara and her team at the front door and had a quick soft drink before getting kitted up to enter the kitchen. We met Ahsan and Shumol who helped Almara show us all the spices and techniques we were going to use that day. We made chicken tikka, chicken bhuna and pilau rice. The highlight for me was making naan bread, I have tried many times to make naan in the past with all different recipes, but they've never turned out well, this recipe worked perfectly!It was a fantastically fun and informative masterclass and I would recommend anyone to do it, from beginners to advanced home cooks, you'll all learn something! If you don't want to do the masterclass, eat in or take away instead! Always fabulous!

Got a takeaway chicken tikka masala chicken was awful phoned up and returned it next day never again

Great to see a proper vegan menu being offered, which makes eating out so much easier when you don't have to worry about eating the wrong things by accident.

My partner and I attended a masterclass at Zari in February 2020. It was booked as a birthday present and what a brilliant gift! The class is incredibly well organised. Everything was set out ready for us to use, and the chefs gave us great demos & instructions - and then just the right amount of support as we made the dishes to ensure that we could make our own versions successfully. Almara, Ahsan and Shumol worked as a great team and ensured we were on track throughout. They showed us how to use knives, temper spices and use a tandoori oven. We made naan bread, Bombay potato, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Boona and Pilau rice - all from scratch in 3h. We picked up some really good tips and left with recipes and the confidence to recreate them at home. We’re planning to go back to the restaurant to eat too as the food we’d created was delicious. The class would be a great gift, or team bonding activity.

Just been to zari in Ifield....will never return

Last night we visited and husband had king prawns, he said they were fab. I was surprised to find a new vegan menu. If you are vegan or want dairy free you have got to try Zaris, fresh produce and delicious!

Telephone ordered two meals was told 40mins as they were busy called after 60mins to be told it wasn’t ready..

Celebrated my husbands 60th Birthday here with family and friends.The food was excellent and the service outstanding.We had a large party with four children included and a variety of menu choices which everyone enjoyed. The staff were so attentive and nothing was too much trouble taking the stress out of trying to organise a large group.I would highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning.

As usual, Zari produced excellent food and the staff were friendly and very welcoming. The restaurant has a very pleasant unrushed atmosphere. I've used Zari before and have never felt the need to complain. I will be using this restaurant again in the future.

Looking through the menu on their website, I knew what I wanted but it was not on there, it never has been. Very hard to get in a curry house I have found.

The staff are extremely friendly, we always and only ever go to zari for our Indian. The menu is extremely clear and the food is excellent. Never have I been anywhere, where the staff are so pleasant. Would highly recommend, whilst writing this we have ordered another takeaway. Thank you to al the staff.
