Yumeijin in Wellingborough

As a takeaway, it’s great. But as a restaurant it is very poor. With the majority of their business being driven by Deliveroo, Just Eat and their own delivery service, restaurant standards have really slipped over the years we have been visiting. It lacks any soul and ambience with bright lights and no music making for an uneasy environment. The young staff, while efficient, could do with some training in enhancing their customer service. It’s not bad service but it’s awkward, again adding to an uncomfortable setting. The food was ok. Not great, not bad, just ok but sadly, the current pricing is more geared towards luxury food whereas this food is standard. The noodles we ordered were plentiful but tasted like they’d been cooked in old oil which added a certain ‘flavour’ I wasn’t expecting. I have no complaints about the other dishes in terms of portion sizing but everything was just a bit too greasy, although meat was not lacking which was good to see. Children are not catered for in the restaurant and whilst I can understand that approach, it would be nice to be able to have access to smaller portions or a small menu. That is a personal thing and hasn’t contributed to my overall rating. The ladies bathroom was really quite gross with mouldy grout, a dirty washcloth left by the sink and just being, overall a bit grim. No hot water either to wash hands with. So essentially, grab it as takeaway/delivery but don’t bother sitting inside. It lacks warmth and personality and just isn’t welcoming at all.

Myself and partner have had both take aways and dined in on a couple of occasions, neither has not disappointed. Food has been lovely and staff have been welcoming and attentive. Pleasantly surprised how big it is inside as well

Rated 5 Star for Wellingborough, food is excellent and restaurant is really nice, ideal for a date. The food is what will blow you away, it's the best in area by far, a significant difference from all other Chinese restaurants in the area.

Bland food, miserable, slow service, expensive for the quality of food, nothing to recommend it I’m afraid. They seem to focus more on takeaways than diners in the restaurant.

Nice food a little expensive but was really nice food

I have been to this restaurant several times over the past 6 or so years but I will say after reading the recent reviews I was concerned my latest visit was going to be my last. Very happy to say it won’t be! Yes there are some electric heaters about the place, but I wore a jumper (it is January after all) and I didn’t once feel cold. The staff were attentive (there were a few big groups in the restaurant) and food and drink orders were promptly delivered after ordering. The food itself was delicious, the prawn cracker starter was appreciated as was the fortune cookie to end!! Fair prices and nice service. Would definitely come again.

Beware of this! Asked about the Christmas buffet & told the difference between normal & Christmas was that it included all seafood dish’s which was no problem as one of the girls doesn’t eat seafood & the other was a vegan & they would both prefer to eat from the normal menu. I booked the table for four adults & upon arrival told the owner/manager that two would eat from the normal menu & two would do the buffet as per the offer which states it is for a minimum of two persons. He then said that everyone on the table had to eat the Christmas buffet & wouldn’t budge from that position!? There is no mention of that on any of the pages here, on their website or on the printed buffet menu on the table & he agreed it wasn’t stated anywhere on his advertising. I asked him at least three times to be sensible & he said he wouldn’t serve us unless we all ate the buffet. At that point we obviously left the restaurant & we will never return having eaten buffet there many times over the last couple of years!!!! What would happen if you took young kids, vegans, vegetarians or someone with allergies to certain dishes? Does he seriously expect everyone to pay the same £29.50 plus 10% service charge in top…totally unbelievable!!!!

Good selection on the menu and some dishes were very good. However, the amount of MSG used was way too much and caused some of my party a sleepless night. For anyone that doesn't know, MSG is used in many Chinese restaurants as a flavor enhancer. You will know if too much has been used as it will make you thirsty, overheated and will keep you awake. Basically you get a hangover. Good chefs do not use MSG!

Myself and family and friend went for my birthday dinner this evening, a meal for 7 but 2 where young men of seven years old, I was immediately told of how to order from the set meal menu as the buffet wasn’t on a Monday and that this way there would be lots of food for the children too, our two waiters where friendly and very helpful in fact the service was great, the food came out with starters which we shared then a duck course and then mains, the food was very good and very delicious, I was then treated to a bottle of wine for my birthday, I will definitely be back soon x

Was a good restaurant. The only that let it down was the constant nagging from staff asking if we are finished. Which made us feel like we had to leave in a hurry which was uncomfortable.

7 of us went for what we thought would be a nice meal. The food was average at best, the service was horrendous, the staff are all very young but clearly lack any sort of training. It’s also expensive for what it is. We went on a Saturday evening and there was only 1 other group in there, I think the lack of custom shows how this place has gone downhill

Terrible food! Rated highly on Ubereats but I imagine that’s because the app asks you to rate the delivery, not the food! Bland chewy sweet and sour HK style, the S&S balls were even worse! Over cooked batter! Terrible experience, won’t be ordering from here again!

We ordered our chinese and it came within 15 mins ..it was the worse chinese we have had ..the chicken balls was more batter and soggy than chicken the chowmeing was unedible..the squid terrible . the lamb pancakes was expensive but dont mind if its good and it wasnt good it was just full of fat no meat . The curry was unedible sorry will not reorder ever again

I couldn't post my review on uber but I'll post it here. This place had become my food for comfort during bad times. It always brings me happiness when I get my favourite food and every tike I try new things from the menu it never disappoints. I have also recommended this place to everyone I know to try the food. ❤️

Previous meals here have been good. Not the same today. Batter on prawns tasted oily and stale. Barely warm. Similar story with the chips which were soggy and undercooked. Only thing half decent was the chow mein.

Ordered takeaway. The food was delivered quickly and was hot, but it tasted very bland. I was also surprised at the cost. I paid £45+ for four dishes (inc delivery) These are London prices for less than average food. Will not purchase again.

Really nice food but wasn't happy with a service charge.

We ordered a takeaway from here after a long time and I have to say we were very disappointed. The chicken Schezuan was very very oily and no taste. The noodles were ok but had better. The sale and chilli chicken was very soggy. Overall not happy and unfortunately will not be ordering again. Moreover took over an hour for our delivery. The app just kept changing the time.

Went with mate, good service, tasty food. Chow mein tasty as hell, prawns massive. Portion size big, crispy prawns to die for. Complimentary sauce was a good touch. EDIT: 08.05.23 menu seems to have changed, prawn chow mein no longer on the menu and they dont do the crispy prawns in batter anymore (as stated by a waitor). Past experiences good but this time there seems to be a quality drop, (very oily, more of a fatty greasy taste). Possibly due to it being a bank holiday so must have been busy, but I preferred the old menu.

Took my daughter here for a birthday meal. the food was amazing as always ( we have a takeaway most weeks from here). Service was great, the young lads were very attentive always asking can they help etc. Deffo worth a visit in or by takeaway.

Lovely service from who I presume the owner/general manager was, a younger looking boy was quite blunt and stand offish but he could’ve been having a bad day. Food was delicious, fresh, quick and well priced, tons of vegan and veggie options and huge portions! Really enjoyed our meal here.

The staff were outstanding. Food was amazing with very little waiting time. If you are going to order the sea bass allow 45 minutes before serving(it does advise on menu). Recommend to anybody. So many dishes and flavours.

Pretty awful. Chicken was so over cooked as to be uneatable. Was a treat for my mother and family, and she was so disappointed. She threw away the food. I will never use them again.

We had visited this restaurant 7 years ago, and it had always been most enjoyable, but my visit on Sat 10th March was unbelievably disappointing. Although the decor is opulent, the restaurant was Freezing Cold, with little electric heaters dotted about. The disco music belting out certainly did not add to an orient ambience. Our starters were overloaded with salt, and loaded with onions. My husbands Sea Bass was satisfactory, whilst my Thai Red Curry had No Sauce at all, it was more like a gloopy stir fry. Thankfully this was removed from the bill. One waitress served us wearing a fluffy jacket, due to the cold. The staff were clearly inexperienced. Our Pinot Noir wine was good, but the small glasses didn't do it justice. The Ladies Bathroom was unhygienic. I was saddened that this restaurant failed on so many levels, the place had few diners, but it was clear they are busy as a takeaway. If you enjoy fine dining, avoid this restaurant at all cost.....or wear two coats!

I had delivery and there seems to be an issue with every single time I order to add to that the customer service received was unacceptable, we had something missing and all the food was cold and when I complained she told me she’d had many complaints today and that she can’t offer me any compensation, which is unacceptable as the food was cold and not very enjoyable! Very disappointed!! DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE !!

The service was great and most of the food was nice, some of the food was over salted. With that being said, the portions are generous and would satisfy those with a big appetite or could be shared between two. The bill was a little higher than other places but not completely unreasonable.

Fast delivery but food really disgusting

Was looking forward to an evening here and was disappointed. The staff were incredibly slow and "service with a smile" was nowhere to be seen. We waited so long between courses and no-one collected empty glasses. The food was cold and oily. Safe to say I won't be visiting again.

What a disappointing meal. We had a chicken dish and a roast pork dish. Both were so dry they were almost inedible. I think this meat had been cooked and sliced a long time ago, kept warm then reheated with whatever sauces. The pork was tough and crumbly. The chicken was tough and dry. The bean curd and veg was also dry and tough. The noodles were ok. I would not recomend Yumeijin and I advise you to look elsewhere.

Possibly the worst takeaway I’ve ever had. Pork and chicken both like old leather. Sauces fairly ok, but that’s it. Threw most of it away.

This was always our place to go for a treat, and to be made to feel special. What a disappointment. We were eating early, so the restaurant was fairly deserted. Service was quite speedy, in fact we had 3 people attending to us - but I am sorry to say they did not have that ability to make us feel as though we were being spoilt. In fact, the young waiter asked me to keep a fork I had already used for my next course - in case they ran out of cutlery when they were busy! We had the set menu meals, which were average, the duck was not shredded at the table as we would have expected, it was all very 'ordinary' - and, with an unexpected 10% service charge (which was not deserved!), expensive. Should have stayed in and had a take-away...

Ordered the salt and pepper chicken and chips, chicken was rubbery (like they were reheated), onions undercooked and the chips were cold. Such a shame, as I’ve had good food from them in the past

Absolutely beautiful well cooked food, far more than we could eat! Clean and pleasant atmosphere. Fast and friendly service too. Great value for money. Will definitely come back here.

Upon arriving, we were guided to two different tables and then back to the first. The multiple waiters/waitresses didn’t seem to want to be there. There was a bad smelly coming from the toilet. Unfortunately the food wasn’t much better. Half of it we couldn’t chew through and the noodles were burnt. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. Cost £80 (2 adults, 1 child). Probably worth around £35 in terms of service and quality. Should have went McDonald’s! Cannot seem to reply to the owners comment. The nonsense regarding the tables makes no sense. No one knew where we were meant to be and we had pre-booked. The second part about saying everything was ok, yes we may have said this to one or two of the staff to be polite (our mistake) but you need to own up to your mistakes which is poorly cooked food and bad service. The table next to us didn’t get offered fresh plates for their mains until they asked for them and then the waiter came back and asked them again, do you want new plates. Surely during the main course you get fresh plates So, I have owned up that we said things were ok when they were not, can you own up to some of the mistakes on your part?

Very, very good Chinese restaurant! Clean. We were invited here to a birthday party and I wasn't sure because I'm picky. Well, the food was simply superb! The ribs were huge and perfectly seasoned and cooked so the meat fell from the bone. The chicken fried rice could not have been cooked any better. I have tasted better curry sauce, but the rest of it was so good, I can't drop a star. Everyone loved the food and the atmosphere was amiable. My sister had Thai and that was perfect too.

This is the best Chinese stir-fry I have ever eaten in the UK. It is the closest to home I have had while studying abroad.

What a hike in prices since we ordered last year. 25% increase. Outrageous. And although the prawn crackers are apparently free ( nothing is free) they were stale. Card machine didn't work at the front door..took ages which means dinner is getting cold. Not had a takeaway in ages and was very disappointed. Maybe think twice before ordering from Yumeijin again.

Have been going here for years and years but for some strange reason the food over the past year had been disgusting..! Hadn’t had it for ages so thought I would give it a try again see if it had improved, but omg it was even worse. Shocking prices, disgusting 🤢 food.

I was let down at the last minute by a takeaway who usually serve me for informal business meetings at my home. I phoned Yumeijin at 5.15pm with an order for 9 people for 7pm delivery. It arrived on time. Packaged in clear containers (a little larger than normal) and reusable carriers. This turned out to be the best Chinese I have eaten in many years. The menu had a great selection of dishes which was a refreshing change from the usual basic offerings others give. Everyone in the group commented on the quality. I will be going back soon with my wife to use the Restaurant. Very impressed.

Walked straight in without booking at around 630pm and didn't struggle to get a table. The atmosphere was a little quiet but soon got busier. Like most chinese restaurants the menu was huge so me and my wife opted for a set meal for two as it included a selection of horderves and some duck pancakes before a nice mix of mains and a large bowl of rice. All of our food was lovely, nice and fresh and hot. Our mains included Beef in black pepper sauce which was bought to the table sizzling in an iron skillet which was a nice touch. We love king prawn dishes and are usually disappointed by the number of prawns you receive but our king prawn and cashew dish was full of huge freshly cooked prawns and full of flavour. The waiting staff were all youngsters and a little shy at times but we had no complaints about the service what so ever. Overall a good experience. Would recommend 👌🏼

Food is always first class as to is the service

chicken was dry and chewy, beef was like leather, egg fried rice was yellow in colour but couldnt see no egg, duck spring rolls where bland (super market frozen taste better) didnt get round to tasting the pawn crackers, could see brown grease and theyre ment to be white, was told one price on phone and think we where charged a higher rate (not sure though). our first and last order, in addition my first review EVER of any food, thats how bad it was.

Ordered a takeaway for delivery. Food came minus the soup. Fine, mistakes happen... called Yumeijin to inform them and they said they would look into it. 1 minute later a get a very rude guy on the phone claiming 100% the soup was in the delivery as he put in in there himself. He said I was basically trying to get further food from them. Upon at him ranting at me the delivery driver entered the restaurant and claimed she had accidently spilt the soup in the car!! No apologies what so ever from anyone. only ordered from here as my local Chinese was closed. Food luke warm and tasteless.

We had a takeaway as a birthday celebration. Food delivered promptly by very friendly lady. Food was delicious, King Prawn chow mein, lots of prawns, shredded duck and fingers of sesame toast. All was hot and delicious, everyone very pleased! Would recommend!

Having lived in the town for 46 years we have become regulars at Yumejin. We were a family of 10 dining tonight. I last posted in October 2020 when the buffet was £19.50. Tonight it was £28.50. Same menu, only addition was a cheap poor quality cracker. Staff were young males and very inexperienced. Service was poor and slow. Food was lukewarm. On arriving home I have drank copious amounts of water due to the amount of salt in the food. We will not be going back for sometime.

Superb food, served with speed and efficiency. The chef is really talented and whips up a huge variety of dishes with flair and skill. The ho fan noodles with XO sauce are recommended without reservation, but everything I had was delicious, piping hot and smelt as good as it tasted. So good I went back two nights running. I wish there were a chain of these places all round the country. If you haven’t visited, you should go at once!

The food was not very good,small portions ,we were placed with another large table ,very confined ... the waiting staff were trying to be helpful but were annoying getting the drinks order wrong,leaning over you with there hair going in your face.... the manager was very rude to my wife and my mother on the phone constantly ,while they were trying to talk to him I wish they had told me while I was there.....it tells you everything when there was nobody in the restaurant at 9.30 on a Saturday night I came here every year for my Birthday a table of 12 so did my mother ..... we will not be returning

Excellent food and drink, as ever. Does not disappoint. I was back in Wboro on a fleeting trip from abroad, and had to make the pilgrimage here!

The staff, service and food was nothing short of exceptional Also inside the restaurant it has been beautifully designed . .

We have only had takeaways from the Yumeijin and the food has always been very good. We order portions between us rather than a portion each as the portions are quite large, especially the rice, which we are never able to eat all of it. The last time we had a takeaway we had we the Duck Rolls which are very delicious. We alsi tried the Mongolian Lamb, which comes with pancakes, spring onions, cucumber and hoisin sauce. This was very nice and the portion was again quite big.

It was a weekday evening and so relatively quiet. Staff were very pleasant and attentive. Each course was quite slow but we were chatting & so we didn't mind. Food was nice although we would have been happy with a bit more flavour & spice. We had crispy beef which was quite disappointing as none of us actually found any beef just frazzled batter. Also when serving a group crispy duck to serve just one small dish of spring onion & cucumber & plum sauce is quite ridiculous. You are constantly handing round dishes, especially with no lazy Susan. A Westernised Chinese menu as most are in the UK. Overall we would go again for sure, & we enjoyed our food & evening.

Wouldn't even consider going in the door if the way they treat their fish in the grubby window tank is the way they treat their customers. There is one HUGE fish floating miserably in a tank that is far too small for it. That's no life. How cruel the owners are - that's typical of the chinese though.

I couldn't recommend this restaurant enough. If you are wanting to have a Chinese whether that's ordering for take out or sitting in for a meal you won't be disappointed. It's quality and quantity for price is outstanding. Number 1. Best Chinese restaurant in Wellingborough by a long shot.

Usually decent food, but daughter found prawns in her dish hadn't been deveined and wife's beef dish was tough. Rice seemed to have been reheated a few times.

Just ordered food from this restaurant, blown away by the quality and quantity. If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant its a must try.

Ordered this evening and the staff are very busy which shows how popular this place is... The staff were very rude on the phones and in person, not even coming off the phone to speak to customers to engage politely . The food I ordered was also very mediocre in my opinion. Will go elsewhere after this experience.

Best Chinese I've had outside of Chinatown London.

Came here tonight with a friend, food was excellent in particular the chicken with pineapple, waitress(didn’t catch her name) was friendly, funny and polite and the manager was polite and friendly too. Excellent all round and not bad value, will definitely be coming again

I have been going to Yumeijin for years and the food is amazing. Definitely not your typical greasy spoon Chinese food. Dishes are nicely presented and the service is excellent. The decor is amazing and I’d recommend the lobster or crab specials. This restaurant needs to stay open in a town with limited choices and is 100% the best Chinese in Wellingborough.
