YO Bakehouse in Ryedale

Eating here was always a treat and we had always felt ourselves lucky to secure a table upstairs in the light and airy room with its lovely old tables and cabinets with pretty china. We turned up on a Saturday morning at 11.30am hoping to secure a table for lunch and were prepared to wait. However, our experience was more like David H's below. We felt we were turned away, quite rudely, being told by an unsmiling young girl that they were full and lunch service didn't start till noon anyway. We returned at 11.50, prepared to wait, and were told there was only upstairs available. Great, we preferred upstairs but sadly it's been changed. There's only 2 tables for 4 there now plus a leather armchair for one, which remained empty throughout our visit. What was a lovely room now feels more like a store room with shelves around it plus a table in the middle full of lampshades that we were next to. I went downstairs to order our food which came quite quickly and was as tasty as ever. My scrambled egg on a muffin with vine tomatoes and avocado was extremely good and my companions loved their warm cheese scone though felt the tomato and red pepper soup was a little too spicy. I appreciate that the staff have to walk a long way from the kitchen to upstairs but it's such a shame that this once lovely room has been changed. There's a lot of places serving lunch in Malton so I think next time we'll see if their staff are less stressed, more smiley and welcoming and how their food stands up to Lutt & Turner's.

Absolutely brilliant. Our 3rd time here, but first time for breakfast. We all had different things and all were excellent in quality, quantity, variety and attention to detail. All served together. We were greeted excellently and offered drinks immediately as were told there might be s slight delay in breakfast...there was not but expectations were managed. The staff, especially Jo, were amazing. Polite, funny, attentive and always seemed to know who needed help.

Had a great lunch with friends. Soup and sandwiches went down well and the coffee was excellent. Good atmosphere and very friendly staff.

Great quirky coffee shop and eatery in Malton. Staff are courteous and efficient. Food and drinks are consistently good. Downstairs is dog friendly which is good for us. Sometimes you may have to wait for a short while for a table … there is a reason why people are prepared to wait.

Arrived just after 11am for a brunch. Was rudely told cakes & drinks only until 12 noon, space upstairs, come back down and order when ready. Noted menu said breakfast served until 11.30am. When finally served our coffees were tepid and the tea cakes were dry and flavourless. During our short stay another couple left without ordering as they were spoken so rudely by the staff.

Love this place, from the service to the beautiful decor to the food, cakes and drinks.. its worth queuing to get in..

Went for tea and cake at this cosy cafe. We had not realised that we had arrived a couple of minutes before last orders but were made to feel very welcome with attentive, but not rushed service. The selection of cakes was huge - with some lovely Christmassy items - creole cake and Wensleydale- yummy. The ambience and decor made it a comfortable and really enjoyable experience. we chose to visit here after reading the reviews, and very well deserved they are. Absolutely a 5 star place. The service from the young man was simply perfect, a credit to the business, our breakfast (light english) was stunning - not greasy, excellent produce and piping hot... and the venue is fabulously decorated. Lovely cafe, we stopped for lunch, the service was excellent. I had a delicious juicy prawn sandwich and my husband the smoked chicken sandwich- plenty of food and presented with a salad and crisps-very good. We would have loved to have had cake- it looked amazing, but we were so full- definitely recommended!

Popped in for breakfast this morning. Wow! I think it's the best breakfast I have ever had. Huge portions (miners benedict for me and a full English for husband) with a big pot of breakfast tea. The service was great and the staff are all so friendly. We will be back soon!

We dashed in out of the rain to a warm welcome and great coffee. Sweet treat choices are kept interesting by having tart/frangipani/traybake etc of the day. Portions are generous and utterly delicious.

This place is just our go too for great food and drinks. The staff are super efficient and so so friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. They use great quality local produce to bring you gorgeous tasty food. Highly highly recommend you give it a try. If you have to queue, don’t worry it’s worth the wait!

We had this cafe recommended by a local as we were wandering through the town and it did not disappoint. There was a small wait as it was a busy period & we had a dog but the staff were attentive and it didn’t take long. The food was delicious (eggs royale & quiche), the hardest part was deciding what to have!

After my over sensitive wife took exception to a woman whom we took to be the owner asking "can you manage the stairs ok?" and wanted to slap her, things got much better. We had done a walk near Malton with friends and our dog and were looking for a place to lunch. We had read online that this place was dog friendly so decided to try and find it. So pleased we did. The service was friendly and efficient and the food was delicious. Two of the party had sandwiches which had plenty of filling. The other two had falafel and humous pitta which also had plenty of filling along with a salad and crisps. Lovely relaxed surroundings we didn't feel rushed at all. Would definitely recommend a visit.

This is exactly what we wanted to round off our trip to the Yorkshire Arboretum 10-minutes away…A beautiful visit to Malton and this fabulous coffee shop. The staff here are amazing. They are all in efficient communication with an unobtrusive ear-piece walki talki system. As a family of 5 we were luckily seated without any wait but what impressed me most were the lovely staff. So polite, genuine and efficient. All smiles. The speed with which orders were taken and delivered was matched by the high standard of the brunch. My only disappointment was that we couldn’t add a tip to the debit card payment system; as a further reflection of the calibre of this place was just a lovely grateful “thank you for the kind thought” from the delightful owner. I recommend this place to anyone visiting Malton!!!

What a fantastic place! We were in Malton for 5 days and this was our 'go to' for take away fat white's - they were really good and the girl serving was so lovely and treated us like regulars! We decided to treat ourselves to breakfast on our last day - it was absolutely delicious. I had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and my husband had the full English, both portions were really generous and SO tasty!! There was also a great range of breads to choose from. The lady serving us was lovely and really friendly, in fact all the staff in there were great - we left feeling very happy and full but sad that this place isn't near us at home! We'll definitely go again if (hopefully when!) we visit Malton in the future.

My son and I called in to this eatery in Malton today and loved it! The service was excellent, the decor was great and the food was brilliant. My son had quiche and he said it was delicious ( as was the coleslaw and chutney accompaniment). I had the best banoffe pie I’ve ever eaten. I’m so glad we broke our journey in Malton and will certainly be visiting again.

Visited here for lunch whilst staying nearby. My husband and I both had the homemade quiche which was really tasty and our son chose a picnic box which he really enjoyed and was good value. Very friendly staff and quick service. Would definitely recommend!

We read previous reviews of this establishment and wondered if they had been somewhat exaggerated. The answer is a simple, no. The interior’s subdued lighting, illuminated by a variety of quirky lamps was warm and inviting. It was like entering a beautiful Dickensian parlour, with a charming dark tartan carpet and antique items dotted around. The mix and match tables and chairs added to the delightful ambience. The staff were on the ball and every request was met with a need to please to enhance your somewhat brief sojourn in the cafe. The food was delicious, we enjoyed a late breakfast, an Eggs Benedict and a Smashed Avocado on Sourdough, simply superb. The coffee and tea were also a triumph and overall we were extremely pleased with our choice. Malton is a welcoming Yorkshire town with a plethora of eateries, we saw no reason to trawl around looking for a suitable one, we found it, and we will certainly return.

The quality of their cakes, tarts, breakfasts, bread is enough to make me travel from London to Yorkshire. Five stars and a must for any visitors to Malton.

Super service and very good covid measures, we felt very safe.I usually have the chicken ceaser salad which is reasonable value but on this visit I chose a jacket potato .....which worked out very expensive as we were charged for the potato the filling was extra which was not made clear. The potato cost £9.95.

Such a lovely cafe with fantastic COVID protocols since reopening! Just make sure you go early to avoid them been sold out of cakes. Unfortunately it took 6 attempts to find one on the menu which they did have left so had to settle on something we didn’t really want. With the specials been less traditional and more unique in flavour such as “aero” they’re not to everyone’s taste and less desirable! Reasonably priced and great service!

If you’re looking for a spot of lunch in Malton, this is your place! Gorgeous sandwiches were had here; beef brisket and coleslaw, and a Yorkshire version of a New Yorker. Both were brilliant. Service was outstanding. COVID rules were fab and all tables were socially distanced well. We weren’t keen on our Bakewell tart we got; it was dry and tasteless. We expected a bit more from a Bakehouse, but the main food was fantastic.

We stayed in Malton during our a trip away (my husband and I). Our hotel was only serving continental breakfast for £10 a head which did not appeal to us at all; especially as we can't have wheat. So we found this YO Bakehouse. Gluten free options!! We liked it so much we ate here two mornings in a row. It is a popular place to eat! The doors open at 9am, and by 9.08am there was no more seating space. I loved the decor, and have included some photos. I suspect the Government's 'Eat out to help out' scheme made it more busy (we were here on a Tuesday and Wednesday). You can't book, it is first come first served system. On the 2nd day, we had to line up but the staff were so kind and opened the top floor early so ourselves and the other people lining up could eat. We were happy and extremely confident with the restaurant's CV-19 procedures. The staff explained everything before we entered, and despite the space being small we felt very safe. We saw the staff cleaning the tables and the chairs etc between customers, it was a very detailed process. We wear a mask when moving around, and then remove it when seated. You need to speak to the server before leaving your table to leave or use the toilet because the space is small. It all worked fine. We couldn't be more impressed. They also have their processes on their website. Oh, and the staff are amazing. They are so friendly and helpful. If you prefer not to dine in, they are doing takeaway also. There are some benches outside and around the town centre so you could enjoy your food outside, if weather permits They make nice (large coffees), and my favourite dish was the avocado smash and feta. We would absolutely return here again, and would recommend it to others.FYI for parents: The toilet does have a change table! I didn't notice highchairs but I'm sure they have them.
