This is the second time we have stayed here and it only gets better each time, Matt and all the staff are so friendly and can't do enough for all .The food as well is excellent, we ate out at at least 4 different places in Castleton and both my husband and myself agree Ye Old Nags Head is the best quality of food and service. We will definitely be staying here again.

Stayed overnight after a walk along the Great Ridge. Loved it. local beer brewed just for the pub was perfect. Good banter with the staff (male and female servers) They are just want you want in a proper rural pub. Would love to go back in dead of winter (If Covid allows) and sit in front of that big open fire. Can recommend Steak and Ale pie. Thanks to all.

Booked on the day for Sunday dinner, absolutely gorgeous food had the but roast and it was full of flavour, loads of gravy, crunchy veg and the mash and potatoes were delicious. Excellent service, quick to order drinks and decent variety of beer, had the staropramen, came in the right glass! Highly recommend especially after a lovely walk in the local area, can't wait to come again

Nice food, big menu but I think they need a few more staff, seemed like it was a little rushed serving other guests but I must admit the staff were very friendly and kind just had a bit of a weird atmosphere. The food is nice but it was pretty standard and small portions. Little bit disappointed but it might have been that we came on a busy day!

We went here yesterday for my birthday, for a late lunch (3pm), after having visited in the summer, when we had a wonderful time - lovely atmosphere, great food and a very friendly waitress.Sadly, we were very disappointed yesterday. The waiter (a man in his late 30s/40s) was not friendly at all, plus rather incompetent. We ordered drinks and everyone's drinks came apart from my nephew's so, after 5 or minutes, my nephew went to ask the waiter where his drink was. The waiter's response? He didn't even look up from whatever he was doing (I suspect trying to sort out his orders), and said, 'I'll get it in a minute'! No apology, nothing, and no attempt to drop what he was doing and get the drink. We were still waiting several minutes later (the male waiter was still dealing with whatever he'd been doing!) when a female (very friendly) waitress passed by, so we ordered the drink from her and it came within 2 minutes. Unfortunately, it was a shandy rather than a lager, but that may have been due to the original waiter taking the order down wrong - he seemed rather confused as we ordered 1 regular lager, 1 lager with lime, and 1 lager shandy. Not that difficult.Anyway, the starters came and the menu had definitely changed since we were last there. Previously the garlic bread was, basically, a pizza base; this time, there were 2 slices (so a third of what was previously served) and they have the cheek to charge £5.99 for that. For 2 slices of garlic bread...One of the mains was delayed, and we had to chase on it. One of the mains said it was served with vegetables but instead came with some salad / greenery. We would have said something but considering the service we'd had up to then, thought better of it. I ordered the seafood platter as my main - the smoked salmon was excellent, the whitebait and squid were very good, but the sauce the prawns were in was very watery. Plus there was no smoked salmon pate on there, as advertised, and I had to ask for the aioli as, despite saying it came with the dish, it wasn't served.I do think the male waiter needs training on how to serve food as well - several times he leaned right across people instead of going to each diner. Not helped, in this pandemic, by the fact that the majority of the time he had his mask on, but it wasn't covering his nose, so it was kind of pointless. He also needs training on how to treat customers - for the majority of the time, he was brusque (and that's me being kind) - and we're not awkward customers by any stretch of the imagination. The only time I saw him smile was when he was waiting for us to pay, and was evidently expecting a tip. I never normally don't tip, but no tip was fully warrantied in this case. In fact, I wouldn't even be writing this review if it wasn't for him - I can cope with everything not being perfect, but not when it's compounded by such a rude waiter.I have to say that I'm staggered (and extremely disappointed) at the difference between our 2 visits. We will try somewhere else when next in Castleton.

We went here in the summer and had delicious, plentiful food and great service. Returned today, left hugely disappointed. The man who served us was brusque and not friendly. He wore his mask under his nose. No customer service skills at all. The food was warm and in the main, lacklustre. Charged £5.95 for two small slices of garlic bread... absolute rip off. In the summer, you got six pieces of garlic bread! Will not be returning. Hugely disappointing.

Visited for a birthday lunch with my fiancee. We were seated at a table, that hadn't been cleaned or wiped down and had to ask for it to be done. The menus were grubby, but the food sounded good. We ordered bruschetta and squid for starters and sirloin steak and a burger for main. The starters arrived with no cutlery, we tried to get the waitress/barmaids attention and she raised her finger at us, as she was busy talking to another member of staff and obviously didn't want to be interrupted. When we finally got our cutlery, one of the knives had dried food on, so I decided to use my hands instead. When our mains came, we were again offered no cutlery, when we asked for some, they came, but we had to ask for a steak knife which seemed like a chore for the gent who served us. The food was good, but we received no checkback or any other kind of acknowledgement. It was only when a lady came to ask if we had finished and how the meal had been, that we got any kind of service. I told her the food was good, but the service was appalling. She apologised and when we got the bill, she had not charged us for our two drinks, which was nice of her, but we would have preferred just decent service. Obviously in a great setting and the food was good. But the lack of service, dirty cutlery and filthy table, especially in these worrying times. Means I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody.

Visited on a Friday evening with my girlfriend. We were greeted nicely and quickly guided to our table to order drinks. I ordered the Dirty Burger with the hash browns add-on. They came separate to the burger which seemed strange. The first bite was great but because the patty hadn't been left to settle for a few minutes all the juice poured out. This also meant the burger was still cooking in the middle so became pretty dry. The pulled pork didn't have enough sauce coating it so that wasn't a messy as it could have been. The burger was tasty still though and the chips that accompanied it were terrific. My girlfriend had the lasagne which also came out piping hot. This was very tasty too though. Both meals were pretty good value too.The menu is vast so I'd love to try something different in the future should I return to the peaks!

Table staff were polite and an extensive menu. However the chef needs to know the menu or waiting staff communicated to on items that aren’t available. We ordered nachos for starter, it came with just salsa (no sour cream or guacamole). After being placed on the table we did ask where the rest of the toppings were, at that point we were then told that the 50 % missing were not available. I feel this should have been told to us prior placing this on the table. Also when the mains came out the salad was missing - admittedly it was most likely garnish - however not the point. We kept quiet on the mains but noticed a trend with both courses. Shame really as my burger was smashing!

Holy monkey nuts, my meal here was an explosion of delight! My burger and bitter garlic water was so good it was as though I was able to watch my childhood of being locked in the cellar, with the fear of being hit with a pair of slippers. My only disappointment was the choice of colour with the vase in the window and lack of piano that I could have a crack at when I'm down 6 lemonades (don't judge me, I get loopy). I have belief that with the right additions, this place will achieve success and become the true 'castle' of Castleton, but make sure not to cheat with the piano, or I'll feel like a right clown.

I must say it took great courage to finally enter this place. From a bystander's perspective it was just a young man entering a pub but to me it's the accumulation of many years of training. From a young age I've always wanted to visit this place but when I tried I was told I was a "scrawny little know it all who should be away with the lobsters and cows not in a pub drinking". But that day was just my luck, today I rose from childhood and ascended to the holder of the gun that is alcohol. I had my first ever pint in this quirky pub and though I had to battle to get it all down and had to butter up the locals to buy me it (as I haven't been paid yet this month) it was all worth it for that taste of heavenly nectar. Though people condemn alcohol and would mobilise to yank it out of the hand of anyone they see I now believe it is fantastic. though it may entangle me confound me and addle with my brain I love it. None of this would be possible without the chubby customers and my new cap which I would take with me to hell and back. Nice pub great beer.

Ye olde nags head, more like yeet olde nags head. I walked in ready to taste the converted special dish “the big nag bag”. I love eating, there’s something about it that just makes me feel full. When the food arrived it looked like a school dinner. I heard somewhere that you eat 7 spiders every night. I’d rather that than 7 school dinners every night amirite lads. It was all a big disappointment... that is until from across the bar I saw an absolute beauty. She was like a hammock in the attic. Like a deceitful mouse driving a car. Oh how I envied her. I went over to her we talked about her favourite football team, Huddersfield town. We then spent the rest of the evening having a right old gossip. I learnt she rode a motorbike and had a pet moth. My curiosity got the better of me. You can’t keep a moth as a pet, that’s a violation against its liberty. It’s ok she said, I play the flute and it charms him. Yes, she was an angel. I felt inferior to her, I was like a repulsive badger in comparison. I didn’t want to terrify her so I left. If I had to scrutinise anything about this establishment it’s that they didn’t serve popcorn. Honestly, you try to go see a movie and you end up at completely the wrong establishment.

Another fab stay. Linda house keeping and jack of all trades is an absolute star. Don't know how the place would run without her.

This is the first time we have visited this pub and will not return. We decided on a breakfast and thought this place looked nice and could see people eating in the restaurant, which I later realised was the residents having breakfasts. We were shown to a table in the pub and as there were only six other people in already eating their breakfasts didnt expect such a long wait, no other customers came in whilst we were there either. We arrived at approx 10.00 am and ordered coffees and two full english breakfasts. The coffees arrived fairly quickly but we sat and waited and waited ... eventually over half an hour passed before we got our breakfasts and obviously had finished our coffees by then. We asked a gentleman who brought our breakfasts out for another coffee and was told in a very uninterested way it would take a few minutes as he was already making drinks for other customers. So we started eating but the breakfasts were so greasy most of it was inedible, the large flat mushroom was full of grease as was the black pudding, I dont know what they had done to the tomato but it tasted revolting and was also very greasy. The menu stated that toast was included but unsurprisingly we didnt get any. We decided to try to eat what we could and get out of there, we never did get the other drinks we asked for. A very disappointing experience, and a complete waste of money. It appeared to me the staff were very disorganised, not interested in customers apart from the residents and understaffed. I would dread to think what it must be like trying to get food at a busy time, probably best not to bother.

I took some friends here for something to eat but was very disappointed with the food, 3 of us ordered roast pork with stuffing and apple sauce ciabatta and gravy. When it arrived only had pork no sign of stuffing, apple sauce or gravy. I did report this but was told they didn’t know what had happened, no refund offered for only getting half the meal. It would have made all the difference if a refund or voucher for a future visit had been offered, but they didn’t seem bothered.

We visited with some friends for a festive night out just before Christmas. The pub and restaurant was busy but we found a table with a bit of help from the staff who jiggled tables round to accommodate us. The food was lovely, we had the dirty burgers and pizzas and everyone enjoyed them. We have eaten here a few times over the years and always been happy with the standard of the food. There was also live music which gave the pub an extra festive feel. A great night!

Love this great pub and restaurant. Beautifully decorated, very festive including the other customers. Gin flight generous and delightful. We were in Castleton for weekend (as always at Christmas) and ate in the Olde Nags head. We moved to the bar after and were looking forward to the entertainer (as were many other customers) All very festive until this guy decided to stick to what I'm assuming to be his 'every time of the year' set. Not festive at all country music mostly. Under pressure from a dispirited audience he deigned to sing a few Christmas songs and then reverted to (we assume) his usual set (Summer holiday (?) Abba etc. Not festive at all. Many people left the previously crowded pub, because (they said) the singer chap was spoiling the atmosphere and it "didn't feel Christmassly". We still love this pub and will still probably visit but we'll avoid when 'Scrooge' is on.

Terrible service, will never visit again. I would highly recommend others also to avoid. Found a piece of shotgun shot in a pie, the response was "there was a warning for it" at no point were we warned and further to this the food was taken away with no offer of a replacement. A further conversation and again poor service and responses, left feeling hungry and disappointed. Save your money and go elsewhere, where staff care.

A good place to stop and get a drink after a long walk but give the greasy food and soggy bottom pizzas a miss. It has welcoming atmosphere with a large selection of 54 gins and local beers. Disappointing the log fires had been left to go out though...

Called in to the pub for drinks on Saturday 7th December & was hoping to eat aswell. Was approached by a friendly & pleasant member of staff asking how we were. We explained that we had enquired if there was any places free for a meal in the restaurant & was told it was full. The staff member said they were fully booked but would see what he could do for us. Half an hour later the staff member had got us a table in the restaurant.

Ate here on the night of the Christmas light's switch on (wouldn't recommend visiting Castleton for the switch on - jam packed and not the event it could and should be!). Stylishly decorated in the main restaurant with a cosy bar area. Two of us had the stonebaked pizza (I should have asked mine to be cooked a bit longer as it wasn't as nice as the other one) and everyone enjoyed their meals and drinks.

I had great food and beer here several evenings over three days. Different chef on each occasion which is great to know that the service and quality of food has a high standard of continuity. All too often the standard can fall when the chef changes. I would highly recommend eating or drinking here as the selection of real ale was excellent and well kept. Book early though as very busy.

What an experience we had here, we booked in very last minute for 9 of us over a busy weekend, the staff were great, and the service was too. We ordered drinks, they arrived quickly and they have a good selection of wines too. Considering how busy the place was, the turn around from order to food arriving was on point. The majority of us ordered steaks, all cooked to varied requirements and other ordered burgers. We skipped the starters in favour of a dessert and overall this was the right decision, the mains were complimented by and awesome dessert that left 9 people very happy. We certainly would return if we were ever in the vicinity again. Thank you for a great experience.

Traditional pub grub, and plenty of it. No namby pamby garnishes or fancy presentation, but just what you want after a hike in the hills. Good value. Excellant local Derbyshire ales, and certainly one knowledgeable member of staff. No beer garden.

On our first night in Castleton we chose to eat here. Food choice was good and there was a range of real ales (kept well) and extensive wine list. The food was lovely and filling. They do a sausage and mash special in a Yorkshire pudding which was very filling. The only down side was that although it wasn’t too cold there were two real fires blazing so it was way too hot. We and our dog were uncomfortable. However on the second evening after eating at the rather disappointing Castle Inn we returned to the Nags Head. It had been a mild day and they had responded by not lighting the fires and there was good entertainment on. On both occasions the staff were attentive and friendly. When we visit Castleton again this will always be our first choice for a night out.

The pub is well appointed and allows both dogs and muddy boots within its portals. But we cam to eat and found the menu a bit limited in choice and a bit predictable. Having said that there is room for the everyday fare served here.Again we were impressed about allergy inquiries and the fact that we were brought a photo on the waitress's phone of the ingredient list from the container to check. Can't be too careful in this day and age. As I say it was a welcome change from home cooking and a good sized portion for us older ones who have to cut down.
